Who: Seth Wadcock and Mira Jasper
What: Seth tries to redeem himself!
Where: Diagon Alley
When: Before Seth and Henry! Fluid time ftw!
It had been almost a week since Seth took a night off and went out for drinks, a rather short lived night after being turned down and mood ruined. He still couldn’t believe it. The girl had honestly no idea who he was at all. Of course he would look like a creep with no context to go along with his actions.
His chance at talking to someone who didn’t just see him for his fame and he went and botched it. He shook the thought out of his head as he headed into the cafe to get a cup of coffee. He leaned on the counter as he waited for his coffee, lazily looking around at the other patrons. Then froze, because there she was. The girl from the bar just sitting there. Well what were the chances of that. The barista calling his name for his drink brought his attention away from her.
He wanted to go over and say something, but what? What could he possibly say that wouldn’t make him look like even more of an ass. Well maybe-- but no-- she probably wouldn’t even think he was sincere, but at this point did it even matter? He doubted he could do any worse than the other night. He was at least sober now.
So he made his way over to her table, and stood behind the chair across from her. “I think I ran into you at the bar the other week.” he said simply. “And I’m pretty sure I was an ass, so just thought I’d take this opportunity to apologize.”
Mira only got one hour off for lunch during the day, and it usually had to be in the late morning. Ollivander always either had business lunches or simply liked eating at a normal time, leaving her to have to attend the shop when he was gone. She had minded it in the beginning (something Emmet had surprisingly left out in the job description), but now she liked it. It gave her the chance to relax from customers, drink a coffee, eat something unhealthy or read.
This tuesday she had brought a book, but not one that was proving to be particularly interesting. It took a couple of seconds for her to register that someone was speaking to her in this somewhat-crowded shop, but once Mira did, she looked up.
“You!” she replied in shock, more surprised than anything that she and the man from the bar two weeks ago were in the same place and the same time again. That was--- strange. Mira remembered him, of course; it wasn’t hard to forget strange conversations with strange men. She shook her head, biting back her tongue. He was apologizing. And as much as she had ranted to Bianca about him in her semi-drunken state, he wasn’t leaving her many options.
“I accept your apology,” Mira spoke calmly, blinking for a few moments at him before returning to her book. Just because he was sucking up didn’t mean she had to roll over.
“Well alright then.” he said as she looked back down to her book, clearly indicating that this particular conversation was over. He nodded his head, and then turned to leave, but stopped two steps out. He really should just leave well enough alone, but that clearly wasn’t going to get him what he wanted. So he turned back to the table, this time setting his cup down on it.
“I’m sorry, I realize this will probably get me right back to square one but, can I buy you a cup of coffee?” He asked in his most sincere tone, trying to leave out all hints of ‘I’m-just-flirting-to-get-laid’ out. “You know, to make up for the other night.”
He was trying, she would give him that. And he was extremely easy to look at. She supposed she could give him a shot. Why the hell not? It wasn’t like she had much to lose, not to mention had the perfect exit if things went sour. Break truly did end in twenty minutes for her, nothing either of them could do about that. So.
Mira looked up from her book again, this time taking note to get a good look at him. She still had no bloody idea who this guy was, remembering that they hadn’t exactly exchanged any form of information about themselves, let alone their names. But he obviously had a plan about what he wanted from her, so maybe she would let him go along with it.
Or not. That was no fun at all.
“And why should I let you do that?” she replied steadily, closing the book on the table to show he had her full attention. Her tone wasn’t malicious or condescending, just--- wondering. However her face displayed a much more mischievous side, the ends of her mouth twitching upwards toward a smirk.
Because I’m incredibly charming.’ ‘Because, who doesn’t want coffee from Seth Wadcock.’ . He thought, but stopped himself from actually saying either. That sort of thing wasn’t going to work. He had to be real. Like any other guy on the street. Merlin, no one told him it was this difficult. He rack his brain for a reason that any girl should accept anything from just another guy, which he wasn’t, he was just pretending.
“Because its free coffee.” He said finally, after thinking it over for a minute. “And once you have it, you really don’t have any obligation to stay. I mean, you could just take it and run, which would be a bit mean but not necessarily uncalled for.” he shrugged his shoulders lightly. “I wouldn’t blame you really, you should at least use me for the coffee.”
He smiled easily. “But personally I think I am worth a decent five minute conversation at the very least.”
Mira’s lips pursed together in an amused way, finding his response worthwhile. Many times men had tried to buy her things, or get her to do things, and they always respond with such fake or unruly answers to her ‘why’ question. He was being honest. She liked honesty. It was on her list of absolutely necessary qualities to look for in a man. A recent addition, yes, but nonetheless still very important.
“I see,” she responded, placing her elbows on the table to lean forward more slightly. Maybe he would redeem himself just yet. And--- alright people get drunk all the time, pretend to be things they’re not or try to bury down certain... emotions. She supposed she could let this go and give him his conversation.
“I’ll take your suggestion into mind,” Mira stated, leaning back fully to sit up straight in her chair. She indicated the empty seat in front of her across the table with her open palm.
Seth gave her a wide grin. Ha, being honest actually worked, go figure.. He flagged over a waitress, before taking the seat across from her. ’you won’t regret--’ No, no. Keep it on the right track. At least he was getting better at not saying those cheesy aloud. “That’s all I ask really. I figure, I’ve already gained the amount of time it takes for you to get your coffee and that’s a hundred times better than I was doing before.”
He took a sip of his own coffee, trying to think of a safe topic for conversation. He really hadn’t thought that far ahead and well, talking wasn’t something he was really good at. After a few moments he just gave up.
“Okay so I lied. I’m probably not worth even three minutes of conversation. I’m hopeless at it. I’m sitting here and all I can think of is, ‘My name is Seth’ followed by obnoxious lines that are probably even worse than the ones I used in the bar.” He shrugged a bit helplessly. “But I want to give this whole talking thing a go, so.” He caught glance of the book that she put back down on the table. “What’s that your reading? Anything good?”
“Not really,” Mira sighed, not even taking the time to look down at it. Instead she was keenly studying his face, making mental notes. “A complete bore, but unfortunately that won’t change it being here.”
Well, this was kind of a let down. Mira had been expecting something, even the tiniest attempt to dazzle her with whatever he thought would swoon her. That’s all flirting was really, a science; a bunch of elements that came together perfectly to achieve mutual attraction. Actually, she wasn’t even sure what he was doing. You didn’t achieve one-night stands in the middle of a shop before noon, nor long-term relationships either so.....
“So tell me Seth,” Mira started, her legs crossing under the table as she spoke. If anything, asking never hurt. And there was no reason why she couldn’t play with him for a little. It was one of the few things she still enjoyed doing. Besides, he had volunteered himself the moment he sat down in that chair. “Why are you talking to me? It’s not like I’m famous or anything.”
“Yes, well. Famous people tend to be highly over-rated.” He said with a tone of mock seriousness, wishing he could let her in on the irony. “Massive egos, tend to think they can get whatever they want. Probably far more trouble than its worth.” He smile played on his lips because he couldn’t keep a straight face.
“As for why I’m talking to you,” he leaned back in his chair and sipped on his coffee trying to think about how to best phrase it. “Honestly? Because you turned me down. I mean you didn’t even give me a second glance, and my lines obviously just pissed you off. As obnoxious as it sounds, that hasn’t happened to me before. It caught my attention.”
He peered over his coffee cup trying to gauge her reaction, hoping that it didn’t offend her, or make him look like some stalker creep because the reason he wanted to talk her was because she didn’t want to talk to him. “So, when I saw you sitting here, I figured that not much worse could happen, so I should at least try to get to know you, cause there’s bound to be something special about you.”
Hm. That was interesting. Mira thought for a moment, keeping perfectly motionless with a small smile still in place on her lips. So maybe she actually wanted to continue this conversation. But she couldn’t do that. That wasn’t what was necessary; what was important was keeping him interested. And you surely didn’t do that by spilling your guts out. You did that with some seductive mystery.
“That’s sweet,” Mira started, noticing that the waitress was walking over to the table. “But---” She calmly took the book and slipped it into her bag along with her other things. Standing up to meet the waitress, she thanked her for the drink, turning her back to Seth in the process. Turning back, she brushed her empty hand on the front of his chest before speaking again.
“I unfortunately have a reputation to uphold now. So---” she spoke as if she wasn’t just up and leaving him. Mira patted his chest lightly, and as she turned to walk away let her hand run across it.
Wait--what-- she was actually leaving? Again. Without thinking, he reached up to grab the hand she trailed across his chest, and stood. “Wait. Look I know I said that you could go once you had your coffee, and you can but--” A small look of desperation flickered across his face as he tried to think of what he could say to get her to stay, or at least meet him again.
“Let me take you out, one date. Give me a chance to prove I’m worth throwing away a reputation.” he said with a pleading just a bit. And he meant it, it wasn’t just a line. For some reason, he wanted to show her he was more than what his reputation said he was, even if she didn’t know what that was. “Look, it doesn’t even have to be a date. Let me buy you another cup of coffee sometime, at the very least it will save you from your complete bore of a book.”
He waited for a moment, and when he didn’t get an immediate response, he continued, unable to just shut up like a normal person would have. “Can you at least tell me your name? Please?”
Mira pressed her lips together to form a small smile. He was cute, even cuter when he wasn’t getting what he wanted. Maybe this would work out after all. While she did enjoy honesty, being a little pushy never hurt. She let out a sigh, letting her hand rest in his grasp for a few moments longer before retreating it.
“Well,” she started, tilting her head to the side as she looked at him. She really should only give him one of the things he asked for. Make him work for it a little bit more But--- she couldn’t help herself. Plus there was a fine line between playing hard to get and being a bitch.
“My name is Mira,” she spoke. “I work at Ollivander’s. If you stop by then maybe we can talk about this date then.” There. That should be enough to satisfy him. And if he never showed up.... well, she would deal with that then. Giving him a quick pat on the side of his face, Mira continued to walk away and out the door. Mission accomplished.
