Some People Call Me Maurice
For the members of X-Force, the previous night had been extremely successful.  Each, in their own way, had gathered pieces of information which helped to make the larger puzzle a little more clear.

1) Rose had determined through a conversation with one of the lead scientists that not only did the X-Gene therapy work, but that it was largely being purposed as a means of suppressing the x-gene in others, with the possibility of adding powers to an individual being more of a side project.  She had also wrangled herself an invitation to see the lab up close and personal.

2) Tina and Joey had, in what even Rose would admit was a spectacular piece of subterfuge, learned that not only was there workings in place to get the therapy to the outside world, but Tina had secured herself a job within the lab on the promise of a favorable negotiation with regards to this deal.

3) Anastasia had managed to secure a security badge for the lab.  It would be some time before this was missed.  With Tina having gained access and her skills, this might have turned out to be redundant, but as each had been operating individually, some duplication was to be understandable.

4) And Chris...  had listened to rumors and confirmed that there was interest among the population in the therapy.  She also had a much more pleasant evening than any of the others had in their interactions with the natives.

In ones and twos, the group had passed the bits of information on to each other and begun to hatch a plan.  Rose and Tina would both be able to be in the lab at the same time easily enough.  Between Tina's technopathic abilities and experience, and Rose's own skillset, they could decide how to proceed from there.  The others would hold back on stand-by, ready to come with a moment's call and gain access either through Tina or through the stolen card.

It was a solid plan.  It was supposed to just be about gathering info.  What could go wrong?

Rose's "Date"

Rose checked herself over in the mirror. Make-up again (thanks for the help, Tina), heels again, nails painted, and, God save her, she was wearing a dress. Casual enough for a date, just risque enough to be daring and manipulative.

She looked in the mirror again and practiced her best non-predatory seductive looks. Her "date" would be there soon.

Bradley Simmons may or may not have danced his way from his place, down the streets of Providence, to Elizabeth's apartment. He is feeling it tonight, folks. He knows he's going to win Elizabeth over and begin the first meaningful relationship he's ever had tonight.

Someday, they'll tell their grandkids about tonight, but first thing is first: getting her out of the door.

He sprays a bit more breath-spray (cinnamon, for the ladies), checks his hair, an hopes he didn't put on too much cologne. He knocks on the door, then adopts a casual (he hopes) lean against the frame, waiting for Elizabeth to answer.

Think non-stabby thoughts, think non-stabby thoughts. Think non-stabby thoughts.

She could smell the cologne from inside. It was a dang good thing she'd had so much practice filtering smells out because it made her want to gag.

Rose put a smile on her face and opened the door. "Right on time," she said.

"Hey, Liz." Brad grins. Her smile must mean she loves the cologne. His voice is two octaves deeper than it was during coffee, as he's trying to draw her in with his animal magnetism.

He even tries to give her a bit of the "bedroom eyes" treatment, and thinks it's working. Ironically, it looks as if he staring at her, or there's something wrong with eyes.

"So, I figure we can see the lab, then get dinner. Now's a good time just because there won't be anyone there to get in our way during the tour." Brad says.

The Urge to Stab was rising. But she had to remember the mission. She got herself to continue smiling by imagining slamming Summers' head into his desk repeatedly.

"So we'd be all... alone?" she asked, trying to sound intrigued and excited by the prospect.

"Yes, we would." Brad says, his voice going back to normal. He can't do the deep voice thing very long.

"I'd like the chance to be alone with you, Elizabeth. I was really looking forward to tonight all day. I've complied a lot of stuff to show you." he says.

He takes the hand and leads her out of the apartment.

"We shall." he grins, leading her out of her complex.

"The lab isn't far, so I thought we could walk. It would give us more time to enjoy the sunset and the sights." Brad says walking with her slowly.

"So, Liz, do you have any siblings? Are they thinking of coming here?" he asks.

Trying to explain all of Rose's different siblings (including the fact that, technically, the guy running the island was her brother) was a pretty impossible task even to people in the know. And Brad was definitely not in the know.

Still, she shaded the lie with a little bit of the truth. "I have a couple of brothers," she told him. "My younger brother still lives at home and my older brother kind of does his own thing. So they probably won't be coming here."

"That's too bad. Providence is going to become a major player on the world scene in the next few years, in my opinion. I daresay it will even be more of a haven for mutants than Genosha currently is." Brad tells her, leading her to the lab.

They arrive and Brad swipes them in, nodding a few males as he gets inside. They all look at him with barely veiled expressions of admiration; Elizabeth is quite the catch for a guy like Brad, for any guy, really.

"Do you get along with your parents?" he asks.

Rose is quite aware of the attention she's receiving. She can't remember the last time she'd had this many guys paying attention to her. At least, not in this way.

"I get along really well with my dad," Rose admitted. "Things are a little awkward with Mom sometimes. We're pretty different."

"Ironically, things are the exact opposite with my parents. I get along better with my mother because we both like science. My dad would have preferred I take up a more 'manly' occupation, like police work. He's a third-generation policeman, and both of my older brothers joined the force as soon as they could." Brad says.

"I didn't feel the same, and now, Dad and I only speak on holidays. Mom and I talk all the time." he says, leading her down a short hallway and to the right, where there were offices on the left and a wall of motivation pictures on the right. Brad stops before one office and beams.

"This is my office." he says, showing Rose a nicely furnished, spacious room with a very high-tech computer on an oak desk. There's a TV in one corner and a small cot across from it.

"Sometimes I end up working overnights, or coming in early and catching a nap before I start." he says.

"My dad's kind of a health nut," Rose said. "Outdoorsy, live off the land type. So I take after that a bit. Mom's great, but she and Dad weren't together long, and I spent more time with him, really."

"Is that so?" she asked him. "Must get awful lonely sometimes."

"My dad is big on hunting and such. Loves to do it. I can't stand it, personally." Brad says.

"Yeah, it does, but until I find a reason to stop doing it, it's what I've got." he says, heading back out into the hall.

"You can see the lab next. Where the 'magic' happens." he grins.

Rose bets Brad's dad has never been her kind of hunting. Just you and the animal, tracking through your own talent... It wasn't even about the killing--in fact, her brand of hunting usually avoided that. It was about seeing how close to the animal you could get without it noticing.

She smiled. "Let's see some magic."

The pair arrive at the lab, which is spotless, just as a female research assistant is leaving. She greets Brad with demure smile and nods at Elizabeth professionally.

Once she's gone, Brad points to a set of monitors on the wall.

"We've mapped the X-Gene completely, but there are still several things we're learning. Did you know that there's a school of thought that says mutants aren't coded for a specific set of powers, but develop whatever is needed on the spot? Think of what someone could accomplish if they continually recreate situations where they needed to manifest a particular ability." Brad says.

Rose may or may not have heard of this particular theory; the few people who'd espoused it aren't considered very credible.

"We're also starting to learn that mutants may be the dominant species on the planet inside of thirty years. With the rapid rise of the population, humanity may in fact be the minority soon. There are a lot scenarios for how things could go from there, but I think it will be a fascinating time for all involved." Brad says.

Doctor McCoy--her universe's anyway, had bounced the theory around once or twice, she recalled, though she didn't believe he'd ever gotten particularly far with it.

"Aren't you worried this is all a little... big?" she asked. "I mean, you could make an army with this. Or take away every mutant's power...?"

"I understand it could be seen that way, Elizabeth." Brad says, stepping a little closer to her now. "But all we really want to do here is help all mutants."

"I trust in Cable's plans and ideas. He's the only person out there with a real idea while everyone spends time squabbling. We can stop more places from ending up like Fargo, Liz. I want that more than anything." he says.

She led Tina out to the central portion of the lab, part of which was dominated by a large glass-faced, temperature controlled refrigerator.

"We keep everything in here, carefully separated by type and degree of completion. The most basic formulas are on the left, getting more complex as you go down and to the right."

Tina walked over and looked at the refrigerator, carefully committing as much as she could to memory about what they had accomplished and what they were working on. It dawned on her that they had come in at probably the last possible opportunity before this whole mess blew wide open.

Tina arched a brow at the idea. And that they had a counter-agent already in place. This was a golden opportunity, to gain first-hand evidence that what was going on here was real and worked. There was no time to get an opinion and this was Tina's mission...

She rolled up a sleeve.

"Alright. You said the TK is the most stable? Let's do it."

The tech nodded and prepared an injector from the sterilized equipment. Fitting the sample in place, she injected it into Tina's bloodstream.

Tina didn't blink when the needle pricked her skin. She barely felt that, though a few moments later she felt the burn of the compound trace through her body. Every place the compound went stung and she felt like cells were being torn. It was painful, but she stayed calm. She'd felt worse pain.

"Interesting."

Tina nodded her head and continued letting her body feel out the changes. After about five minutes post-injection everything abruptly stopped. She could feel an actual shift in how her body chemistry worked and how her mind was wired. There was something else there, right alongside her telepathy. It was a curious sensation.

And one worth testing.

"I wonder..."

Tina snapped her fingers and when she did, the clipboard on the lab table on the far side of the room flew into her hand.

The real reason, Tina was sure, was her existing mutations. And if this took this fast with her...this was bad news. This whole project was very bad news for mutants everywhere.
