Kevin Masterson Hates You, Hates Your City, and Hates Your Heroes
"Kevin! Come back here, we need to talk about this!" Marcy Steele called after her son. Along with her husband, Bobby Steele, she'd just managed to smooth over things with the principal at the Maria Stark Academy after the fight Kevin had been in.

"I'll be home later!" Kevin snapped, stalking off with his hands in his pockets.

"Marcy, just let him go... it's a guy thing. He needs some time." Bobby reassured her, watching his step-son storm off. He'd overheard enough while waiting to speak to the principal that the fight had been something to do with comments about Eric.

~~~
"Why the hell did Mom and Dad have to move back here anyway? Not like Bobby couldn't have stuck with his almost the same stupid sports-talk job back home..." Kevin muttered to himself as he went down the street. Now he was living in hero central. All he ever risked running into out west was Wonder Man, and he doesn't count. Now it seems like every other day there's the Fantastic Four or Spider-Man or whoever doing their thing in Times Square and the media going nuts for it. All of them who've gotten to come back so many times.
So why not his dad?
And did any of them even ever apologize for what they dragged him into? Hell no. Sure, he got the occasional check-in from Herc, since he was one of Dad's buddies (nice guy, but dude needs to shower more often), but do you think him or his mom had the Avengers on their speed-dial? Fat chance.
Bunch of stupid costumed glory hounds...
Sif walked next to Thor as they walked down the sidewalk. Migard was so crowded and noisy. It made her miss Asgard, but she had agreed to stay at her beloved's side. Today they were exploring the city a little and there was a promise of ice cream and chocolate.
Thor moves along with his beloved, mostly quiet. He's always enjoyed watching the mortals, but has usually done so from afar, at least in recent times.
Kevin is still walking along grumbling, when he bumps into a blonde mountain, getting knocked down.
"Oof!" He lands on his rear, then half-heartedly glares up at whoever he had the accident with.
When he recognizes the face, his expression turns apathetic and his jaw clenches. "Oh. Gods." A very important difference in tone from 'Oh gods...' He says 'gods', in much the same way someone might say 'Oh. Foot fungus.'
If he picks up on the tone or the glare, it doesn't change Thor's expression any. He just offers the young man a hand.
Kevin gets up on his own, and stares Thor down. (Whilst looking up.)
"So I gotta hear it from you now, too?"
Being seventeen, the world revolved around Kevin, so if he was running into Thor after having a fight at school and a fight with his Mom, it had to be on purpose.
That draws a slight tilt of his head, a slight change of curiosity in his expression. "Kevin?"
"Well met, Kevin," Sif said. "What wert thou expecting to hear from Thor?"
Kevin is a very generous ill-tempered young man. He has enough indifferent gaze to share with everyone. He brushes himself off and looks between the two of them.
"Yeah... Kevin Masterson. Y'know... used to be about yay high--" He gestures to about his navel. "--, used to think Captain America and the Avengers were so cool, son of the guy you dragged into your high and mighty stuff."
Thor nods. "Thy father wast a great man. His loss wast a tragedy, and the world lost a hero. Tis good to see thee again, whate'er thy tone, and whether thou believeth me or no."
"And we miss him dearly," Sif added. "How fares thee Kevin?"
Kevin tilts his head slightly, looking at Thor with a bit of curiosity now.
"...so you're not here because of the fight?"
"I wast not aware of any fight. I wast simply showing Sif about the city."
"It ist his attempt to endear Migard to me," Sif said. "How fares thine mother?"
Kevin huffs. "I had to set straight some creep at school when he started talking shit about the fact that Mom remarried." Mostly the case, anyway.
He looks to Sif. "She dragged me across the country to live here again, for starters."
"Mayhap, but why thou wert fighting ist thine own concern, and hers. Knowing thine mother, howe'er, methinks she ist just doing as she thinks best for thee."
Kevin frowns. "If she really wanted to do what was best for me, she could have stayed with Dad, and not had things wind up with him running off to play hero and getting killed for all his hard work."
"Thine father didst not play hero. He saved the world entire, and much else besides. And when given chance to step away - he chose to continue to follow the hero's path. Whilst tragic, thy father's sacrifice ist a thing to be honored."
"Last I checked..." Kevin seems rather sullen.
"Most of you heroes get to come back, over and over. He didn't." He turns to walk away.
Thor's expression goes stern. His eyes narrow.
"Some." he agreed. "But in millennia of life, I hath seen thousands of the heroes of Asgard die, and be claimed by Hela. A few each generation escape death's clutches, but ne'er enough... whilst many villains return time and again, cheating Hel's grip. And I wouldst trade them all for thine father... or any number of others just as brave."
When he speaks again, it is with all the weight of godly presence behind it.
"And as long as thou'rt so focused on that he died, and not on what he died for... and what he lived for... thou wilt understand naught of heroism."
"Yeah... sure; just like Reed Richards and his buddies have cured cancer and stopped world hunger."
His anger somewhat deflated into annoyance and mild depression, Kevin walks off.
Thor shakes his head, but lets him go. "A shame." he offers simply, and quietly, to Sif.
"Aye," Sif agreed. "He couldst do much good with his father's mace if he wert worthy of it."
