Battle of Hogwarts! May 2nd, 1998

He and Odette had split up, and as Noah watched the Astronomy Tower of Hogwarts begin to crumble, it sank deeper into his gut that it might've been the last time he'd seen his wife. He might not even see his son, or daughter by the end of this night, and Noah took a deep breath before following the crowd of what seemed like the good guys down a corridor.

Devastation. It was all he could see. There were portraits still burning on the walls, Peeves was dropping pieces of rubble on the attackers, screaming, shouting, spells and jinxes and----children, children lying dead on the floor. Noah wasn't sure how he was able to move as fast as he was, but---but the worry that Terry was one of those lifeless bodies on the floor----Anna shouldn't be here, she should've left, it----

He neared the Great Hall and stopped dead in his tracks, the sight of the real raging battle exploding, nearly literally, in front of him.

"---holy shit."

Marissa felt dizzy. She was sure that the only reason she could still even move was because of that damned golden hand of hers. She pulled herself forcibly around the stony corner, wand raised shakily. A stinging hex hit her shoulder and she let out a heavy gasp, falling back against the wall.

She grunted, biting on her lip while she tried to stop the room from spinning in front of her. She'd caught some bad spells from a Death Eater who'd been too fast and too reckless to be good news - she was losing a lot of blood and she was aware of it. It wasn't the first time she'd been cut up, after all.

"Shit," she rasped, dropping down hard on her knees and immediately trying to scramble behind a pile of rubble so she could hide from the barrage of spells getting thrown her way.

She was getting too damn old for this.

He was waiting for a spell to strike him in the back and finish him off. For the past year he'd been the Auror designated to protect Minister Thicknesse and had managed to turn off any sort emotion he may have once had. Feelings couldn't be put in the way of duty. This---duty that had taken over his life in every aspect. But, really, what life? He was alone, his family refused to speak to him, his wife had----

Will struck out his arm and wordlessly sent a man in a red cloak flying through one of the wooden doors of the corridor. As much as he wanted to get hit with a spell and end it all right now, his defensive instincts could not be detered. It almost felt like he was under Imperius, the way he moved through the corridor as if on a mission. A mission, he had a goal. Get the Order, kill the rest of the remaining Order to keep down the Hogwarts' defenses. But it seemed like everyone in the wizarding world had come to fight, and it was hard to figure out who was who.

He turned a corner, his long dark robes floating behind him as the spells shot past. Will scanned the area, not fazed by the violence going on around him. He'd seen enough for one life time that it didn't matter to him anymore. His eyes caught sight of a couple of death eaters, cloaked, masked ones even in this last and hopefully final battle, charge toward one corner, and---there was a woman. Will stood and watched, his mouth pressed into a thin line.

"Ah, fuck. Protego! Sectumsempra!" She shouted the latter spell with all the pent-up frustration she'd had these last few months, almost a year now -- these stupid bloody Death Eaters who'd taken her hand, who'd taken her sister's hand -- it exploded out of her wand with more force than she'd been expecting, enough to make her fall back against the wall again with a hard thud.

Her head cracked back against the plaster and brick and she groaned. Oh, her head was spinning even worse now. She wasn't going to last much longer at this rate. She tried to focus, attempting to pull herself up while her shielding spell flickered around her. She looked over to the approaching death eaters again, spotting an upturned bookcase.

"Reducto!" The case exploded into sharp shards of wood, sending one of the masked men flying but leaving the second to continue stalking toward her.

He recognized her face but he couldn't place from where. Why would he recognize her? She must either be from the Ministry or the Order. He had not reconnected with anyone from his younger days in England, and his French colleagues had made the right decision in staying away from this war zone. So who was she? Her red hair was what was causing his mind to search through his memories, and when she shouted her last spell his was hit with a vivid image of a dragon.

Will blinked, the shards of wood spreading around him as his quick shield spell kept him unharmed. MacFusty, it was Marissa MacFusty that the death eaters were about to kill. It took him a moment to realize that he spoke of her attackers as a separate entity than himself, and Will knew that this had been the case for a very long time. He was an auror who did the Dark Lord's bidding, he hadn't been a death eater in a very long time. He hadn't seen or spoken to Marissa in a very long time, so it was confusing as to why he suddenly felt angry that they were attacking her unfairly.

She reminded him of Hogwarts, before he had been recruited by Anthony Mulciber to avenge his brother's death. Marissa had been someone who understood his fascination with animals, and had offered him the opportunity to work with dragons when he left school---but he had to decline because the Dark Lord had other plans. The Dark Lord had seen potential in him and had managed to get him into the auror program and affect his life forever.

The Dark Lord had left him locked away in Azkaban for a year until the Ministry had fallen, and the Dark Lord was nowhere near the castle right now as he once again fought in a war he had never wanted any part of. His hands began to shake in anger as all that he'd lost over the past twenty years began to flash through him at an alarming speed and intensity. Will struck out his arm and sent a deadly curse straight into the oncoming death eater's back.

She'd been very certain in that moment that even with only one death eater heading in her direction she wasn't going to make it, not after her last-ditch effort failed completely to stop the hulking man. Marissa blinked, and suddenly the man was face-first only feet away from her. She pushed back off against the wall with one her prosthetic hand, biting her lip and trying to focus her gaze on whoever was behind the body.

It took her more than a few moments to place him while she stood there swaying -- dark hair, not curly but not straight --

"-- Jugson?" She spit blood out onto the floor of the room and focused on not feeling queasy. As far as Marissa had been concerned, she hadn't believed all the bullshit running through the ministry about him once she'd read about his arrest. She hadn't wanted to believe it, but some of it -- made sense. He'd helped her find her little sister when nobody but the death eaters had known the location of the children ... but the point was that he'd helped her. She knew what it was like to get caught up in the war, what did it matter what side they were on? It was all the same now, and he'd helped her again.

She couldn't believe he was some horrible person.

"Will." She took a few staggering steps toward him, trying to scan the room behind him for enemies so that she could fire off at them if it came to that. "I knew -- they were wrong about you."

"They weren't," he grunted, putting his arm out to push Marissa behind him as a new assault of death eaters came from around the corner. At first they stared, unsure why he was poised to strike against them, and it only took them another second before they decided that it didn't matter; they were going to take down anything in their way. But, had they ever faced an auror who'd been militant in his training for the past twenty years? One that had mastered hexes of the dark arts before he'd finished his first year of the program?

Had they ever dealt with a man who had absolutely nothing to lose except this last blast of honor that had coursed through him? It didn't matter that it was Marissa behind him, he hadn't spoken to the woman in over a decade, but the flicker of an image she'd brought him of his life before his dark mark, before his brother had been killed, before----Will would give up everything for a time turner, but he had nothing left to give so it didn't matter----

Three powerful red spells shot like lightening out of his wand, squarely hitting three of the assailants straight in the chest.

"Get out of here!" he shouted at Marissa without looking over his shoulder. It was her only chance. He suddenly decided to stop whatever horde of death eaters were coming toward him and effectively, toward the Great Hall where he knew most of Voldemort's opponents weer still battling. Will did not want to give the Dark Lord one more second of his help, of his supposed loyalty because look what it had gotten him. He was a bloody ambitious Slytherin that had let other people control his life for---his entire life, and making this decision was probably going to cost him the little he had left.

"GO!"

She let herself be pushed if only because she couldn't really find the strength to try and dodge it -- besides, it looked very much as if Will was trying to protect her and not making another last-minute-decision to rejoin the Dark Lord. She managed to smirk, though, and shout over his shoulder, "You're here now, so they were obviously wrong."

It had just taken him a little longer than most to figure out that he was a prat. At least he'd figured it out before it was really too late. Then Will seemed to be preoccupied single-handedly duelling a trio of Death Eaters, and as much as she wanted to argue with Will, she knew that he was right. She nodded once, firmly, and closed her eyes to apparate.

Merlin, she hoped that St. Mungo's wasn't still under the control of the Death Eaters or she was going to be in serious trouble in a few seconds.

Well, more serious the problems she'd be having from apparating in the state she was in.
