Reflections (open)
The visit Starbridge had insisted upon had been quiet so far. Time with his father, readjustment to the general Terran and specific Xavier's environment. Trying not to impose in any way on Rachel at what must be a difficult time.

He'd just been playing chess with Moira Hrimharisdottir in the library, and when they were done -- one game each, and one stalemate -- and she said goodbye, he lingered, staring at the board, at his safe-but-trapped king.

"Lovely metaphor," he muttered to himself.

"Metaphor for what, Feathers?" Rose asked as she came into the library. She couldn't help but hear, what with her enhanced hearing and all.

"Oh. Hello. Rose, right? I was just thinking aloud, do excuse me. But the king is an excessively useless piece in this game. His only responsibility is to not get hurt, and he is not good for much else."

"Got it in one, Feathers," Rose told him.

She looked over the chessboard. "Yeah, I can see why that particular metaphor'd appeal to ya. Never much cared for chess. The whole pawn metaphor ain't a nice one."

Starbridge nods a little. "Father had a friend when I was younger who used to say that if the pawns all joined forces, and possibly had a long talk with the rooks, they could make the whole board a republic in eight moves. It was funny."

He looks at her more straightly. "Were you looking for something, Rose?"

"Looking for a book on zen Buddhism," Rose said. "Yer dad said there were a couple old volumes in her somewhere."

"It would be over here." He gets up to show her -- some things haven't changed in three years. "Would it be presumptuous to ask why you wanted it?"

"Nah, 's fine," she assured him. "Looking mostly for meditation exercises and the like. Findin' my center better."

Starbridge listens and nods. "Concentration and focus are always a..challenging process."

"Yer telling me," Rose agreed. "Wouldn't think some princey type like you'd have that problem."

"Matters of astral projection are not helped by losing focus," Starbridge explains with a slight shrug. "Neither are the visions."

"Huh," Rose said, with a nod. "Guess yer right."

She arched an eyebrow. "You one of them precogs, Feathers?"

Starbridge nods. "I am not very good at it. The visions are...difficult to understand." A pause. "You do know that I have hair, yes?"

She shrugged, "Yeah, well, you smell kinda like feathers. Shi'ary, anyway," Rose said.

He nods. "Yes, I'm sure I do, it is just...funny. At home, I do not have enough feathers."

"Kinda surprised, honestly," Rose began, "of your people bein' all that acceptin' of you, even with your mom bein' in charge. Shi'ar never struck me as the most acceptin' folk."

"They don't have another option. My parents' marriage, even long-distance, has never been approved of at court, and being a throwback --" Starbridge lifted his hand to show the clawed fingernails. "--does not help, but my Imperial full-blood cousins have been disqualified by legal technicality, and trying to ignore that technicality is unwise due to their mental illness. That leaves only the two half-humans, and I am the lesser of the two evils there. The polite acceptance of the court is reinforced, also, under the doctrine of --" And Starbridge intones a phrase in archaic High Shi'ar.

"My late uncle, Majestor D'Ken, did many utterly despicable things. One of these resulted in my much older cousin, Adam. He, too, is half-human. He understandably wants nothing to do with the Shi'ar government."

Huh. The name struck a faint bell, but nothing Rose could put to anything, and she didn't count on the universe's being the same anyway.

"Yeah, I can see that," she said.

Starbridge nods simply. "They were better at covering things up in those days; he was shipped to Ch’reesharaa to be raised by the Jath'che." The names, of course, fall off Starbridge's tongue much easier than they would from a native English speaker's. "At any rate, I am, as I said, the preferable option."
