Okay. I expected that feeding a dog as big as this one was going to cost me money. I expected to have to walk him and play with him and all that stuff. I didn't mind that. I still don't mind that.

He's cute. In a big, completely oblivious manner.

What I wasn't expecting -- although I really should have now that I think about it -- was for him to be barking at night and keeping me up. He's so docile during the day so I wasn't really expecting him to bark at night. I'm hoping it's just him adjusting to a new house. Because really, I appreciate my sleep too much. If he wants to bark I'd prefer he do it in the day.

Maybe he's scared of the dark? Can dogs even be scared of the dark?

Oh and I named him Nietzsche. Niet for short.

Animals dislike change and are vocal about it. You can invoke some sense of familiarity by bringing in something from their original environment. In this case, add this item to where they sleep.

What if I don't know what its original environment was? Any advice in that scenario?

As you appear to be the primary caretaker, you would be the only other thing familiar to him. Leave an article of clothing with him at night and it should suffice. Though I would recommend it not be something you would want to wear again.

Maybe he's scared of being eaten.

Is that supposed to be a joke?

Did you laugh?

No. It wasn't funny.

Then it wasn't a joke.

That's not something Niet would be afraid of.

What. That's...That's actually cute. But, I'm not sure if it's that with Niet. He seems kind of...childish.

I don't have experience with animals to know much, but maybe if he's gone through some past trauma he might be afraid of the dark, or sounds he hears at night.

I want to meet him! I thought I heard a dog barking the other night.

Maybe if you take him for a long walk or let him play with other dogs it'll tire him out and he'll sleep better.

I'm sure you'll like him. He's really happy. He likes everything so I'm sure he'll take to you quite well.
