Who: Eliza Alderton and Dedalus Diggle
What: He's decides to extend their Hogsmeade visit
Where: Hogsmeade XD
Valentine's day had never been more to Eliza than a reason to eat a lot of red candy. Which was a very good thing, of course, but she'd never been bothered by not having a boyfriend, or sat in the common room depressed; she liked seeing people happy and in love, she liked going into Hogsmeade and taking in the rather extravagant decorations. It was just, well, it was a time for fun and love, right? What was wrong with that?
But she'd have to admit, having a boyfriend did make the holiday that much more special. Eliza even managed to put her worries about Dedalus away and enjoy the time. She liked just walking down the streets of Hogsmeade holding his hand, especially since she hadn't seen the place since the dementors attack. It was good to see that the town could survive something as horrific as that.
"I can't believe it's almost three already," Eliza said with a slight pout, swinging Dedalus' hand high between them. The restrictions were necessary, but it made doing all you wanted (or spending as much time out of the castle as possible) hard to do.
Dedalus really hoped that Eliza didn't notice how he had been keeping her in one area of Hogsmeade. Normally, they'd just walk around, but today was kind of special. So, yeah, okay Valentine's day wasn't that particular day, but he was still treating it like he was. And after everything that had happened with them, between fighting and avoiding the fact that he had lied to her and she had found out and things just being...difficult, he really owed her something nice. Something special.
"I know, time kind of...flies." He looked over to her, giving her hand a gentle squeeze as he smirked at her, turning to look ahead of him. Glancing down at his watch, he noticed what time it actually was before he cleared his throat and brushed his hair back. "So, uh..." he paused for a moment and then looked over to her again. "I sort of had something I wanted to show you? I mean, before we needed to leave, I sort of...wanted to show you something."
Maybe this wasn't such a good idea...he wasn't supposed to tell anyone about what he was supposed to show her, but he needed to tell her something. He couldn't keep lying to her all the time, and he really did want to do something special for her. It took care of both things. So. Yeah.
He lead her over to a very quiet and empty area, looking around a million times before he looked back to her. "Okay, um...okay, you can't say anything about this. To anyone. Ever. Okay? You just, you can't. It'll just be really bad. I mean, not that it's a bad thing, but if people knew about it, it'd be a bad thing, and...no one can know about this, okay? No one." He raised his brows to make sure she understood.
She had to admit she grew a bit excited at this last minute thing. Their date really wasn't over, and Eliza listened intently, only to have her expression falter as Dedalus began to explain the situations. She wasn't allowed to tell. Her eyebrows rose high and Eliza bit her tongue, unsure of what to make of all that. Well--he had said that it wasn't a bad thing, but if it wasn't a bad thing, why couldn't she tell anyone? It didn't make much sense, but she nodded.
"All right," she said, her own eyes scanning the area to make sure no one was in hearing range. It seemed like most of the students were heading back to Hogwarts; whatever Dedalus needed to tell her, it was important, but apparently could tell her in the short amount of time they had? This was really losing all kind of sense, but Eliza simply nodded again, her grip on his hand tightening, "I promise."
"Okay. Good. Alright."
He cleared his throat and removed his hand from her own, unzippering a pocket that was located on the inside of his jacket.
"Remember, you can't say anything..." It was then that he let out a long sigh before he pulled a long chain from the hidden compartment of his coat. He held onto the chain with one hand, as the contraption itself was held in the other. "So...okay, I know that there's been a lot of questions lately because I say I'm one place and sometimes I'm...not exactly at the place I say I'm going to be." He swallowed again and then looked down at what he was holding. "But...well, this kind of helps explain things." He opened his palm to expose what he had kept hidden for so long. "
It's a time turner. I mean, you probably already knew that, but...Dumbledore gave it to me at the beginning of the year because my schedule is...well, it's insane to be honest, but he gave it to me, and there have been things I've needed to do and I've needed to use it, and because sometimes I'm in two places at once...quite literally, but, yeah, um, sometimes I don't really remember that I was supposed to be somewhere else, and then things are just. Bad. As you know." Okay, so he was sort of lying again, but he wasn't because that was sort of the truth he just left out the fact that he was sneaking out of the castle fighting off Death Eaters. That part? Yeah, she didn't need to know about that...yet.
"But, I wanted to show this to you, because...well, I mean, I owe you something really nice, and I know that Hogsmeade isn't really...well, special, but I just wanted to do something...good. I mean, well, I just figured I'd tell you. And now things might make sense when I'm not where I say I am when I say I'm going to be there...sort of." Okay, he really couldn't say what he wanted to say, but he really was trying. Awkward was sort of his default setting.
She knew he didn't mean it, but Dedalus was quite good at the theatrics. Eliza was literally on her toes in anticipation, and even though he'd warned her many times that it was something she should not be telling, it took a lot of self-restraint to not shout, 'You've got a time-turner?!' Because! Because that was a time-turner, Dedalus was---he was going back in time and---Eliza blinked furiously, looking almost dizzy as she tried to wrap her mind around the concept. She could barely follow normal class schedules let alone attempt to take two at once. How hadn't she noticed? Her boyfriend was in two places at once and she hadn't any idea!
Of course she knew he was stressed, but she'd blamed that on the schoolwork, anyone would be with his schedule, but the thought had never occurred to her...
"Arithmancy and Ancient Runes are at the same time," she murmured, putting a hand to her head. Her eyes went back to the time turner before looking up at Dedalus, "They're at the---you're in both places at the---so--"
Eliza let out a confused laugh, straightening up and blinking a few times again, "That's remarkable."
He couldn't help but smirk just a little bit at her reaction, but he had a feeling it was just nerves. He wasn't sure if she would be angry at him for not telling her, or what she would be feeling when he told her, but the fact that she wasn't yelling at him was a good sign. It was a very good sign, from his perspective.
"Yeah. I mean, I know it's kind of freaky, and weird, but it's just how I've managed to not go completely nutters this year, but...well, since it's Valentines, and I haven't exactly been the best boyfriend as of late, I wanted to give us a few more hours so we could actually do something besides just...walk around, which was great, but it wasn't what I had...well, thought we would be doing on Valentines weekend, because we just kind of walk around all the time...but I've never had a date on Valentines before, so I'm kind of new at this and have no idea what I'm supposed to be doing..." He began to play with the chain of the time-turner, starting to feel like a complete moron for just rambling on. It had been quite some time since he had gone on one of his run-on-sentence-speeches that usually didn't make much sense.
"You want to take me---!" she started excitedly, but then covered her mouth in case her voice had gotten too loud. Eliza lowered it to an exaggerated whisper, stepping closer to Dedalus, "You want to time travel? With me?"
She couldn't hide her excitement even with her words barely audible. All thoughts of Dedalus doing something bad were washed away, and oh. He wanted to use the time-turner to spend some more time with her. On Valentine's Day. Oh, forget everything she said about not really getting into Valentine's, it was absolutely the best holiday ever invented and Eliza bounced on her tip toes again, looking up at Dedalus with a keen expression.
"How do you do it? Oh, are you sure? We should go back at least an hour. Could we get caught? Ooh maybe we can get into Honeydukes before all of the cherry hearts are sold out--" Eliza clearly couldn't decide whether or not she was terrified or excited about this, and she leaned into Dedalus' chest, looking down at the time-turner with great interest.
Once again he found himself smiling, nodding his head as he turned his eyes back down to the contraption. "Yeah, it's...it's fine, really, we just need to make sure we're not where we were before, because that's...that's not good, and we really just can't be seen. So..." He fiddled with the chain again before he carefully placed it around her neck and his own. "So, okay, um...you see this little..thing? You just kind of turn it a certain amount and then you go back." He lifted his hand and placed it on the 'little thing' he was talking about, looking down at her one more time. "You ready?"
Once he was sure, he turned it for about an hour or so, watching everything around them shift as time moved backwards. After he was sure that everything was set, he removed the time-turner and placed it into the inside pocket of his jacket before he checked his clock. "Okay, it's 1:55...so we have another hour and 5 minutes." Looking to her, he grinned and moved his hand to take hers, lacing their fingers together. "So...do you really wanna go to Honeydukes?"
At some point she'd grabbed onto Dedalus, and Eliza was sure that if she hadn't she would've collapsed from shock. She didn't feel anything, but watching the clouds move so quickly over the hills, the people walking backwards, the birds flapping back onto the branch they were resting on---Eliza let go of him the moment everything started moving normally again, and was grateful that he took her hand because she was about ready to start hyperventilating.
"I--yes. Wow. Oh, wow," from their secluded spot she spotted a clock post and covered her mouth as the time read 1:55. "Holy shit."
Eliza very rarely cursed, but it fell out of her mouth so easily this time. If there were few times to deserve a good curse, this was one of them. Absolutely amazing. She turned to Dedalus, eyes still wide, and kissed him hard, arms going tightly around his neck. No real reason other than to make sure they were all in one piece, but it was nice to kiss him like this all the same.
"You're incredible," she mumbled into his mouth. No matter if she wasn't allowed to tell her friends what her boyfriend had done for her; she knew that he'd literally made more time to spend with her.
