Kristoff Vernard, aka Kristoff Von Doom ([info]discardedheir) wrote,

Flashback: Just a little more than eight years ago.
Kristoff would, when asked by certain parties about how well he thought the past three months had gone, say that at least the mechanically and magically locked-down padded cell in the basement hadn't been necessary.

In truth? He'd come to absolutely adore his high-handed, defiant little brother. It still wasn't clear if Vincent had come to accept the term, but Kristoff didn't -- well, he cared, but he could live with even being considered some sort of castoff servant with weird issues for the time being, if that was what was going on in the much-younger boy's mind. Kristoff would still be his brother.

It was a quiet afternoon. The Richardses had taken their children on a family outing for the day. Grimm was settling into the home he had recently acquired for his 'retirement'. Storm had a date. Quiet indeed.

But then something was happening in the lobby. He pulled up the appropriate screens and, just for a moment, froze.

Then Kristoff headed straight down there.

Doom stood outside the entrance to the building. Despite being on his most hated enemy's ground, he was not here with the goal of starting a war. Something that belonged to him had fallen from his grasp. The situation required correction.

Kristoff started activating a few things on his way down, slipping his mask down as well, and said, through the communication system, "Vincent. Under no circumstances are you to leave the building or even come to the lobby. Please."

When Kristoff gets there, he opens the front door. "Sir."

Vincent, for his part, had already sealed himself in the sub-basement.

Doom had no regard for the formality of the exile. "I have come to collect my son. He will be brought to me at once."

"I am afraid you are too late, Sir. It has been decided that Vincent is staying here."

The eyes behind the mask narrow. "I have said that I have come for my son. It would be unwise for all parties to impede this." The hands moved from folded at the small of his back to across his chest.

Figuratively speaking, there is a homesick child who wants absolutely nothing but to beg Doom's forgiveness carefully hogtied in the back of Kristoff's mind.

All he says is, "Yes, Sir, I know. You may come inside if you wish to discuss it further."

At that, there was a step forward. His armor picked up the Kristoff was releasing some sort of vapor, but his filters disposed of it easily enough.

"There is nothing to discuss. The boy is my son, and as his father, international law demands he be returned to me."

Kristoff continued to stand steadily between the open front doors. "The paperwork for asylum has already been filed, Sir." Certainly extremely uncommon for a Latverian citizen, but it had been done before. Once. He continues calmly, hiding the terror and the guilt very well. "I can assure you I will look after him, Sir." Just needed one moment more.

"It really isn't worth the trouble for you right now, Sir. Especially not with an aromatic polyamid permeating your armor's systems."

...That was unexpected. The whelp has clearly been preparing for this.

"Doom requires no armor to deal with traitors and fools. I will be taking my son, NOW. This nation will not risk a war for one child." Eldritch energy crackles around him.

"Kristoff..." He plays upon how much hearing his name in his voice is bound to affect him. "..do you wish to disappoint me again?"

He mentally runs over a few defenses -- inelegant and untalented though they are -- in his mind, fairly certain he could survive the first thing Doom might do magically. The prospect of dying at the second thing isn't nearly as intimidating as the conversation, though.

That Kristoff stops at tensing at the last part, a strange hitch in his breath replacing the stifled whimper that almost escaped him, takes incredible effort. "Some things...cannot be helped, Sir. And I do not entirely care what this country will risk. Vincent is My Concern now, Sir, until such point as he chooses to go back himself. Your current inconvenience will prevent your getting to Vincent before you are inconvenienced further by others," He'd alerted the Richardses and the Torch and they were en route, of course, but he doesn't say the names; it wouldn't help. "And Dr. Strange does not live far away, Sir."

There is a glare from behind the mask, and with a gesture, green energy surges through Kristoff's body. Doom turns, his cloak flapping lightly.

"I will be watching. CLOSELY. Until such a time as my needs dictate him at my side, I will hold you accountable for his welfare. Tread carefully, Vernard."

And at that, he is gone.

Kristoff's a little too busy being wracked with pain to answer, of course. He stumbles back inside before collapsing. The tears as the mask comes off are less from the pain than from...other things. But soon they're dried, for the moment, and he drags himself back up to go down and find Vincent.

Vincent is still layering wards over the door to the room he sealed himself in, having pushed every bit of available furniture up against it as well.

"Vincent?" Kristoff says, leaning heavily against the wall adjacent to the door, voice a little strained but trying to speak with his usual clarity and precision. "He is gone."

Vincent moves adjacent to the pile, responding hesitantly. "Are... are you sure?"

"Entirely sure. He would not make such a departure only to return immediately. Even if I were mistaken in that, he has sabotaged armor to attend to. But I am fairly certain it will be a long time before he ever tries to come here again."

Vincent broke the wards and teleported from the room, arriving next to Kristoff outside of it. "..why did you help me? He could have killed you?"

Kristoff slipped down to one knee -- entirely for reasons of eye level and not because he's still hurting. That was his story and he was sticking to it, if asked.

"His killing me was not the likeliest outcome, all things considered; although admittedly far from impossible," he said quietly and earnestly. "And I told you I had made my decision, Vincent. This is what elder brothers do."

Vincent looked at Kristoff unsurely. He still couldn't quite understand why the older boy had decided to save take responsibility for him. His eyes shifted from side to side uneasily.

"I can go back upstairs now?"

"Yes," Kristoff said, not getting up just yet. "It is safe. Although if you do not clean up the other side of the door now, we will have to attend to it later today."

Vincent sighed heavily. He gave his guardian a look. A look that was intended to make it very clear that it was SO troublesome to undo that hard work, and he was only doing it especially as a favor to him, and he'd better not forget it.

He snapped his fingers, and he was back on the other side of the door. He set to work dragging items out of the way.

Kristoff couldn't help but chuckle very quietly for a moment after that look and Vincent' teleportation. Then, slowly and carefully getting himself back up again, he said, clearly and politely but more warmly than his usual manner of speaking. "Thank you, Vincent."

Vincent emerges soon after, opening the door and walking past Kristoff in a hurry, mumbling in Romany. "Thank you, brother."

Kristoff's face practically lit up, but all he said was a calm, quiet, "You're welcome, brother."

And that was that.
