I'm always pretty happy when I'm just kicking back with you.
WHO, Olive Hornby and Alfred Potter.
WHAT, Olive’s making dinner and Alfred has to eat it.
WHEN, End of August, a few weeks before school.
WHERE, Olive’s house.
STATUS, Incomplete.

Olive Hornby was not a cook. Despite the fact that it was the forties and most girls knew how to cook a hearty meal at the age of twelve, Olive was an exception. Her mother was a working journalist with a sick son and had little time to teach the lessons of being a lady to her daughter, especially when she herself didn’t even know how to cook. In fact, the best cook in the house was her father. So Olive learned on her own, and though she wasn’t great, she wasn’t THAT bad, not matter what Alfred Potter said.

“Liam,” She called to her brother from the kitchen, covering her face from the steam rising from the boiling water, “look out for Alfredo, okay? He should be flooing over here soon.” She heard her triplet mumble in acknowledgement and satisfied, went back to her cooking. Already she had been belittled twice; once from her other triplet, Sebastian who claimed that who ever was eating that would end up dead the next morning, and the second from her father, who had taken one look at his boyish daughter wearing a frilly pink apron and trying to cook and laughed.

“I can cook!” She demanded both times, and it had become her mantra as she poured the pasta into the hot water, and began mixing the sauce and prepping the salad. Her brow was furrowed in deep concentration, and she was in the zone.

Alfred had been getting ready for hours. No, actually that was a lie. He just whipped a sweater over his head and dove into the fire, without checking to see if it was out. It wasn't. He ended up burning his clothes, and had to rush back upstairs to change. So he put on the sweater that Olive had given him from France, and dove back into the fireplace, this time shouting the address out and throwing the floo powder in before he actually tried walking through fire. He hated travelling by floo. He whirled around mid-air, glad that he hadn't eaten before this. He would certainly have lost it.

And then he landed. Straight in the middle of her fireplace. He fell out of it onto his nose, barely missing breaking his glasses. He was full of ash. He HATED this mode of transportation and could not wait to learn to apparate this year. Alfred grinned up at Liam, who was the only one in the room.Luckily, the boy didn't burst out laughing. Instead, he just motioned to the kitchen, which is where Alfred went next.

He laughed under his breath. Olive was wearing a pink apron. And cooking. And merlin, it was funny. He bit his tongue, trying not to laugh aloud. Instead, he stalked up quietly behind her, laying a hand on her shoulder. Any lower, and her father would probably have his neck, and he didn't want that tonight.

"Don't forget the Olives, Olive." He smirked.

Olive nearly jumped out of skin, and with a yelp, she whirled around, the hot water form the stirring spoon in her hand flying everywhere, including her face.

“Merlin, Al, you idiot!” She said as she dropped the spoon and rubbed at her face, trying to wipe away the scalding droplets of water. She scowled at him, and bent to pick up her spoon, knocking him in the shin with it as she rose. She did a twirl to show off her apron, and added a curtsy to finish.

“I never forget the olives, my clever boy. It’s the best part,” As she said this, she picked up the olives she had set aside, and dropped them one by one into the salad. As she moved on to the alfredo sauce she was mixing, she gave him a little smirk. “Much better than the sauce, of course.” One of Olive’s favorite things was picking on Alfred. He was cute when he was flustered.

It was weird seeing him. She hadn’t seen him all summer and honestly, she missed him, though she’d never say it aloud without making a joke out of it.

He was caught between giggling at her thrown spoon and frowning because he wasn't at all sure she was all right. He grabbed a washcloth, ran it under cold water, and pressed it to her face, dutifully ignoring the kicks to the shin. He bopped her (lovingly) on the head, but couldn't help laughing when she spun around like some housewife on display. Maybe that would be what she looked like in about five years. Although, it was Olive, so he highly doubted that. He stuck her tongue out at her very rudely.

"That HURT."

He frowned, rubbing his shin. That hurt. He took one of her olives as retribution and popped it into his mouth.

"The olives would not be the same without the sauce, Ollie."

He grinned. In fact, he couldn't stop grinning. It was good to see her. He hadn't since the last day of school last year. If they'd been alone, he probably would have picked her up and whirled her around just for the fun of it, but her father was in the next room, and again that would have not ended well. Instead he smirked softly.

"You've grown. You look more like a skinny weed than ever."

And by 'skinny weed' he of course meant 'pretty.'

She gave him a cheeky grin as he pressed the washcloth to her face, and pointed to her cheek. “Now you have to kiss it and make it better,” She teased, and when he complained about being hit in the shins, she bumped his hip with her hip.
“Man up, Fredo. Girls don’t like whiners.”

Olive slapped him on the hand when he stole one of her olives, and gave him a look as she stirred the noodles. “But the olives bring out the overall deliciousness, where the sauce just sort of adds a sort of flavor.” That was a lie. Olive always did like the sauce better than the olives, but she’d never tell Alfred that. He wouldn’t let her hear the end of it.

“Oh why thank you darling. Did you get thicker glasses? You look like even more of a nerd!”

Because he was an impertinent git, he did lean down and kiss her cheek, after making sure no one was looking. He winked at her, smirking. "There you go. Cured. That's all you get though. Propriety, Olive, is still very important, even though I know it's very hard to resist me."

He frowned at her next statement, however, and swatted her away. "I AM a man. And I'm not whining."

Lies. He was absolutely whining. To make matters worse, he leaned over to sample the sauce with a spoon as well. He liked making her mad. It was very funny to see her all slappy and frowning. Even though, of course, when she got VERY violent, it was all aimed at him, which was not good.

"I did not, actually. These are the same glasses as you saw me in last time. Except not, because I broke that pair. Same design, though."

He honestly thought his parents had a chest full of these same glasses, he went through him so very quickly.

When he kissed her, Olive tried to ignore the fluttery feeling in her stomach. She smiled, and put one hand on her hips and let the other go to his face, letting her finger trace his jaw line tauntingly. Boy, was she glad her father wasn’t around, or he would have thrown a fit.

“You’re right, it’s just so hard to resist you and your nerdy face.” She turned away from him, but when he made to sample the sauce, she whopped him in the face with her spoon.

“Back off, saucy boy, or you’ll end up looking like your namesake.”

She shifted to the noodles, making sure they didn’t burn like last time. The only reason she couldn’t cook was because he was always distracting her. So really, it was HIS fault she wasn’t that great.

“I think you have way too many pairs of the same kind, Alfredo.”

He bit his lip when her hand went to his face, he couldn't help it. She was a best friend, yes, but a very very PRETTY best friend, and it wasn't fair that she was pretty. Oh well. He had learned a long time ago that she was much more mean than she was pretty, and she proved that when she whacked him with a spoon. He frowned, and retaliated by stealing the spoon and waving it at her threateningly. Not, of course, that he'd EVER hit her. He couldn't. He didn't hit girls. And despite all thoughts to the contrary, she was still a girl. He sighed at her.

"I will never look like alfredo sauce, as I'm not pale and thick. Just pale. And besides, it's not that my parents named me after that. Silly."

He ruffled her hair, smirking.

"And I like these glasses. They make me look fetching."

Olive gave him a little smirk when he bit his lip. Despite the fact that they were best friends, a small part of her kept wondering if they could be something more, ever since the party after O.W.L.s last year where they'd gotten drunk and she kissed him. It was a quick kiss but a kiss nonetheless, and she would be lying if she said she didn't feel anything. They never talked about it; she hated being awkward and serious, and so she acted as though nothing happened. But she didn't want anything to happen. She liked being his best friend. Anything more would be...weird. She thinks.

"You are definitely as pale as alfredo sauce, darling, but it's alright. You're parents did too name you after it. Why do think I started your nickname? I had a nice chat with them a few years back and tada! Alfredo."

She made a face when he ruffled her hair, and pushed his hand away and back into his face.

"Yes, darling they make you look like a dashing little geek."

This wasn't fair, this wasn't fair. He remembered the kiss really, really well. It had been completely accidental. It was after OWL's, they were talking, laughing, she was scooted in close to him...so close that people were beginning to question it, in fact...and then when no one else was looking they'd kissed. It was nothing. A peck. But it was the most glorious peck he'd ever experienced, and that bothered the hell out of him. So of course, the next day, he'd gone and flirted with that little blonde in his Transfiguration class to make him feel better. And it didn't work. He didn't feel better. In fact, he was very sure that nothing less than Minnie in underpants could make him feel better. He'd suggest that sometime, just to see, but he would just get a glare and a slap. Bugger. He frowned at Olive.

"You're paler. I'm hungry. Are you done yet? When's dinner?"

This is what he did when he got uncomfortable. He became three years old again and began asking a string of questions that never ended until she shut him up.

Olive could tell he was uncomfortable, mostly because of the short sentences and endless questions. She hated it, hated being uncomfortable and awkward, so she laughed and poked him rather hard in the stomach with her spoon. When in doubt, Olive was abusive.

“You’re white as a sheet, idiot. And there’s no way I can get this done if you’re here asking me every five minutes and distracting me with your dork glasses.”

She went back to work, straining the noodles and putting the pasta back in the pot and pouring the sauce in with it. She felt like a housewife, and it was a really strange feeling. Olive didn't like the idea of being a housewife, and whoever Olive married in the future, if she even got married, better be able to handle that. As she began to mix, she looked over her shoulder at him, nodding her head towards the salad.

“Make yourself useful and finish the salad,” She demanded.

"I'm distracting you with my incredibly charming glasses, you mean."

He corrected, grabbing the spoon away from her and tapping her on the head with it. He wasn't going to hurt her, of course, but it was okay to threaten, right? He made up for it by sitting on the counter and smiling at her disarmingly, in what he thought was a very dashing manner indeed. He liked her like this, all domestic, but it wasn't exactly normal and he was weirded out by it a little. He was happy to hop down from the counter and mixing the salad. He was rather good at that sort of thing from home.

"Yes, dear."

He smirked, leaning over and kissing her forehead because he wanted to make her feel strange now. Well he thought that would work.

She snorted, and said, "hardly," as she began spooning the finished pasta onto two little ceramic plates with flowers on them. Her grandmum gave them to her on her 16th birthday for some reason, and Olive always thought it was appropriate to use them whenever she made dinner for Alfred. She didn't look at him as he was fixing up the salad, focusing on her delicious (atleast she hoped it was delicious) meal, but her focus was shot as soon ash e leaned over and kissed her on the forehead. It was a simple kiss, much like the one she had asked for earlier, but it was different. Domestic. Sort of like they were married. Which freaked the hell out of her.

Olive laughed maybe a little too loudly, and tried to shrug off her confusion. Alfred was her FRIEND. One of her bests. And that was all.

"Look at that, I've got you tamed. Olive Hornby, taming boys since 1942. I could make it my career, taming husbands for their wives and whatnot." She was babbling, and she hoped he wouldn't notice.

It DID make her flustered, it DID! He knew that by the fact that she began babbling, and it was hilarious. He tried not to smirk too hard as she dished food onto their plates. It actually smelled wonderful, but he wasn't going to tell HIM that. He sat down at the table and put the salad down, waiting for her to dish out food, because she was the girl, and because he was a brat. He played with his fork and aimed it up at her arm, poking it a little.

"You will never tame me, Olive Hornby. I'm too much for you. Too wild. Too free. I'm like a wild animal, and you'll never cage me."

If she wanted to babble, he could do it right back.

Olive made a face at him, indicating that she did not approve of this obvious housewife chore of hers. He could get his dinner perfectly fine, he was just being annoying. But she went along with it anyway, and made a show of setting everything out on the table, a big, slightly creepy housewife smile on her face the whole time. When she finished, she finally sat down across from him, kicking him in the shins in the process, because she was feeling particularly abusive.

"Lies, Fredo. You are like a house cat, blindly following me around and asking for pets and belly rubs, and I, as your loving master, oblige, most of the time. Unless you're being annoying, like most cats." Olive hated cats. They creeped her out. That, and she knew Alfred loved them, so it was fun to say she hated them.

Alfred was very sorry he'd refused to dish out the food, because she began looking VERY scary immediately while doing it. Like an Olive-robot. A smiley Olive-robot. Is this what she would be like as a wife someday? Not that she was going to be HIS wife someday. In fact, that thought was just odd and strange. He refused to allow it. But in any case, he was rather happy when she kicked him in the shins. It felt more home-like. He stabbed a piece of lettuce with his fork and stuck his tongue out at her, smirking.

"I am NOT a house-pet, Ol-love. You have never and will never pet me, because if you do, I'll bite you."

Belatedly, he frowned at her and added, "And there's nothing wrong with cats. Take it back now."

Olive was pleased with how quickly the awkwardness left, and immediately forgot about the whole ordeal. That was how she was, and she was grateful for that particular trait. She grinned, and reached out to pet his hair much she would pet a cat, (if she ever were to pet one of those mean creatures), and made a show of it.

“You’d never bite me. You see, you are too tame to bite your MASTER.”

When he began to defend cats, she laughed, and made a face at him. “Everything is wrong with cats. They’re mean. They’re like, a dark wizard’s—no, a NAZI’s, favorite animal, no joke.”

He wrinkled his nose and snapped his teeth at her when she tried to "pet" him, much like a cat would do. Hey. If she said he was, he may as well try to be. Instead of actually biting her, though, he shooed her away with a shake of his head.

"I WILL bite you, Olive Hornby. It'll be hard and it will hurt. You just try to pet me again. And you aren't my master. I could sit on you and crush you and kill you, you definitely aren't my master."

He reached over and wrinkled her hair after that, just to show her.

"I'm NOT Hitler!"

She jumped when he made like he was biting her, and gave him a look when he didn't. Olive laughed at his pseudo threat, and reached out to pet him again.

"You'd never. I'm far too strong for you anyways, and you could therefore not crush me and kill me. Even if you could, you wouldn't, because you looove me." She gave him a little smile, and dug into her pasta.

"I never said you were, but your love of cats is definitely questionable."
