Some Things Never Change
Ryan had to say this dimension almost that future place seem less crazy but that one still took the prize in his book. Still there was one thing he knew had to be the same in this verse just like in any of the others he had been too. Criminals still sometimes needed to be beaten up and Ryan did have to admit there was nothing like beating up a criminal to get your mind off things and have some fun.

After spending most of the day pouring through the history of this world which he now felt he was fairly knowledgeable about he really wanted to do that. After talking to some of the locals to the world he found out a few places that he could go to to do just that. After a little bit of looking over the suggestions he used a teleporter to head over to Keystone City. It sounded like a nice place for someone new to this dimension to go and do just that.

After arriving there he did some running along the roof to get to know the city a little more personally before he started looking around to see if there was anything he could do to help people out that evening.

This whole thing went differently in Mitzi's mind.

When she stepped into the alley and told the mugger to let the woman go, he didn't have a knife. And if he did have a knife, then he just dropped it and ran while Mitzi ran the opposite direction. Keystone City muggers were a different breed of criminal. They got weird when the wind picked up, because chances were that it wasn't a storm; it was the Flash, or Kid Flash or Impulse coming kick your face in.

These days, the Flash had his work cut out for him. Kid Flash was gone and Mitzi hadn't seen Iris since the news came in a couple of days ago. Mitzi went on a mission with her new teammates in the new Titans East group, but she was still the weakest link on the team. Even Pippi had real powers, somewhat.

So, Mitzi was trying to get her "street cred" up, so to speak. She didn't want the whole team having to watch her back all the time.

So, she'd come across the mugger (she was good at catch criminals in the act, which was weird in itself) and told him, a little more forcefully than she'd intended to stop.

"Run along little girlie. Adults are talkin' here." the mugger said, and turned back to his victim.

So Mitzi picked up the nearest beer bottle and tossed it, scoring a direct hit on the back of the man's head. The bottle shatters and he roars in pain, giving the woman a chance to break his grasp and run out of the alley with a quick "thanks" to Mitzi.

When the mugger rushed at her and dragged her into the alley, she realizes she should have run, too.

"You're gonna pay for that, you little bitch." the man says, brandishing his knife, his breath stinking stale beer and god only knew what else.

Right about now, she wished Pippi or Iris was here.

Ryan found the scene not long after that.

“Hey asshole,” Ryan said from a fire escape a few stories above the ground, “Why don’t you leave the pretty blonde alone before I make you.”

He had fought his kind a bunch of times before and already knew exactly how this fight would play out in his head if it happened and he had to say he rather liked his odds here especially since he had the high ground.

He kind of hoped the guy would be stupid enough not to run since that meant he got to beat him up. Something nice and simple that reminded him of home a bit even if it would be nice never to run into this type of thing.

The mugger turns Mitzi around, holding the knife to her throat. If she wasn't so terrified, she'd be crimson with embarrassment right now. Not only had she messed up this bust, but now someone was going to end up saving her ass and holding it over head later.

"You'd be listen to him, jackass. Or he's gonna wreck your world." Mitzi says.

She hopes that's the case anyway.

"Shut up, girlie." the mugger says, looking up to where Ryan is.

"You come any closer and I'm gonna carve this little blonde a new mouth scream with. You wanna be responsible for that?" he asks.

“Fine I won’t move from this spot,” Ryan said.

He had a plan to deal with that but he just had to make sure he could keep attention on him and not what his hands were doing.

“But you have got to know that this can only end badly for you now,” Ryan said reaching behind him to grab a few crescent darts he had on the back of his belt. While he was doing that he was lining up a bit of a tricky throw.

“I mean come on you look like you’ve been at this long enough to know that and smell it too,” He said while trying to as stealthfully as he could throw the crescent darts he had away from the guy out of his line of sight on him but would bounce back and hit him in the back and hopeful knock him out or at least shock him with pain from no where.

Mitzi had no idea who this guy was or what he was planning, but she hoped it would happen soon, otherwise Crazy Mugger Guy might make good on his threat to carve her a new face.

Mitzi barely sees Ryan's hand move, but she realizes something's happened when Crazy Mugger Guy shrieks in pain and drops the knife, his hands going to the back of his head to cover the spot that the crescent darts strike. Mitzi shrugs free from his grasp, then turns around kicks the guy in the groin as hard she can manage with her Nikes.

Now, the man doubles over clutching himself and Mitzi gets out of the way, hoping that Shadow Man has something planned.

"Um, he's all yours!" she says, moving as far from the guy as she can.

Ryan was already getting himself on top of the railing of the fire escape when he saw that Mitzi was about to use his attack to escape and get a rather nice hit in there herself.

He then jump off the railing doing a forward somersault in the air before bringing his outstretched booted foot down on the huddled over muggers head slamming it hard face first into the ground.

Ryan’s own landing was a little bit rough but nothing he couldn’t handle. While he wasn’t sure yet he had a fairly reasonable guess that the mugger was now down for the count but for now he was going to air on the side of caution.

“You ok,” Ryan called over to Mitzi.

Mitzi couldn't believe her eyes. Not only could this guy fight as well, or maybe better, than anyone she'd seen doing it...but he was smoking hot, too.

It took her a minute to find her voice as she stared at Ryan.

"Um, yeah. I'm good. Are you okay?" she asks, pushing her hair out of her face.

Stupid, of /course/ he's okay. He just saved /you/ from getting killed without breaking a sweat.

"Thank you for the save." she says.

"I thought I was pretty familiar with everyone on the beat around here. Did I miss when you showed up?" she asks, trying to figure out who this guy is. Maybe Iris knows him, or one of the other girls.

“That’s good to hear. I’m fine too, thanks for asking,” Ryan said.

Most people seem to think that if you do the hero thing you can jump down a couple stories or get punched through a few brick walls and be perfectly fine or at least able to just walk it off. Granted he probably could walk those off or at least pretend to and just ignore it but it did still hurt.

“It was no trouble at all,” Ryan said, “Always like giving people a hand who seem to have gotten themselves in a bit over their heads if I can, especially when they were doing that to help someone else out and are very pretty.”

He could certainly think of a few times off the top of his heads where he would have liked some help like that. Normally hit on people he saved even if it was only mildly so but he probably wasn’t going to be around here too long and she was damn good looking.

“Didn’t really miss much, not really from around here so if you actually had heard of me it would be pretty weird. I was in the area and figured I might as well do a patrol, guess that was a good thing.”

Did he just say I was pretty?

"Well, it's good you came along when you did. You were amazing. I'm still not sure if what I saw was magic or just plain awesome." she gushes.

"Can I ask the name of the guy who saved me? You can call me..."

Uh-oh. What should she call herself? She couldn't just tell him her real name.

At that moment, she remembers something Annie said to her years ago.

I swear, Mitzi, you can be a walking calamity at times.

"I'm Calamity." Mitzi says.

“Just plain awesome,” Ryan says, “I don’t have any powers or anything so it’s all skill.”

Ryan had never really used a superhero name. He probably should spend some time brainstorming to think one up at some point.

“You can call me Ryan,” He says figuring he was from another dimension and probably wouldn’t be staying here long anyways so what could it hurt if he told one person his first name. It wasn’t like it was too uncommon or anything.

“It’s nice to meet Calamity,” He said.

"Okay, call me Mitzi. It's nice to meet you, too, Ryan." she says, smiling at him.

"That's amazing that you can do all of that with no powers. I wish I could do the same, but if I could, I wouldn't have run into you. Could I maybe, buy you a burger to say thank you?" she asks.

“Mitzi that’s a pretty name,” Ryan said returning the smile.

“A burger sounds great,” he says, “But you don’t have to do anything to thank me, if you don’t want too.”

He didn’t want to have dinner with a pretty girl over her feeling obligated because he had saved her.

“You know I probably could teach you a couple simple things that might help you get out of those types of jams in the future.”

Thirty Minutes Later...

Somewhere across town, Mitzi leads Ryan to a secluded rooftop overlooking downtown Keystone City.

"So, I think this will do for the purposes of our ideas." she says.

"What do I learn first? Punching, kicking or throwing small objects for maximum effect?" she asks.

Mitzi assumes, what she believes, is a fighting stance. She's leading with the left leg, and she puts up her fists much like a boxer's, also leading with the left.

“No,” Ryan says, “I’ve seen muggers with much worse stances who completely thought they were going to win.”

Ryan kind of felt a bit bad about doing this but if he told her what he was going to do then it wouldn’t work so well.

Ryan gives her a bit of a push to unbalance Mitzi so that she would have to step out with one foot to regain it.

“The foot you just stepped out with is you dominant one.”
