Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
what a year for a new year
Even the magnificent hall that glittered with floating balls of light and dancing ribbons of black and silver could not distract Rose Weasley from how uncomfortably itchy her robes were around her neck. The rippled cloth was buttoned up to her neck in what her mother insisted was a very fashionable way of staying modest, and what her father described as perfectly appropriate for a girl of her age attending a ball of such importance, but Rose only saw it as a nuisance.

She had to admit, however, that the maroon looked fairly nice on her. Much better than that green from Christmas that made her hair pop out too much. How embarrassing that had been.

After entering the ball with her father (dressed in the nicest dress robes available: never again would he be caught wearing ancient robes of lace) and her mother (in quite a dazzling blue number that even her own daughter had to admit looked stunning), Rose's eyes immediately searched for her savior of the night: Basil Bristow. Surely the Minister of Magic's son was already in attendance? She bobbed up and down on her heels of moderate height to the annoyance of her father, but it didn't matter. He had already been approached by Uncle Harry, and the two were complaining about their robes. Excellent, Aunt Ginny! Now her mum was distracted.

Off Rose bolted, looking for a familiar tall figure who would most certainly make this night much more enjoyable than possible with anyone else.

On the other end of the ballroom, converted from the Ministry lobby specifically for the event, Basil was doing much of the same. He'd been one of the first to arrive, along with his mother and father, to greet the guests as they arrived, but the Ministry New Year's ball was the event of the season, and soon people were flooding in too fast to say hello to all of them, and Basil managed to wander off from his parents, darting through the crowds of people in search of his best friend.

Basil was tugging uncomfortably at his tie, standing in line for punch, when he finally spotted her. He stepped out of line immediately, heading over towards Rose. "Hey," he said elloquently, finally loosening the tie enough to be comfortable. Basil gave Rose a look over, decided she looked nice, but didn't say anything about it. "Took long enough to get here, didn't you? I've been dying without you, love."

Rose grinned as Basil approached him, and while normally she'd hide her relief to see him just to be annoying, she didn't feel like it was worth it during the holidays. "Lo," she greeted back, watching him loosen his tie and finding herself a bit surprised with how handsomely he could spruce up. "Don't blame me, blame my father. Takes ages to get ready, he's such a girl."

She gestured to the room in general and rolled her eyes. "This is ridiculous. There can't really be this many people working at the Ministry, can there?"

"Oh, yeah," Basil said, seeming to notice the crowd around them for the first time. He'd grown up attending functions just like these, they were just a fact of his life. "Well, all the Ministry employees are invited, 'course, and so are their family, and Minister himself can invite whoever he likes. Dad likes to invite ambassadors and other Ministers and stuff, good for staying on good terms I gue -- oh bloody hell."

The tail end of his sentence was cut off as Basil cursed and turned quickly, snatching at Rose's arm and forcing her to turn around with him so they were each facing the other way. The minute they were, however, he tried to act cool. "So, yeah, no, it's more than just the Ministry." Basil coughed and cleared his throat.

As he answered, Rose's eyes spanned across the group, trying to see if she could spot the difference between the regular Ministry workers and the ambassadors. And then she was suddenly turned, and Basil was acting funny and she had to wonder what it was all about.

"What was that all about?"

"What was what all about?" Basil asked, feigning ignorance. "So how long you think we'll have to stick around? Dad's going to want to stay until at least midnight, but he's going to want to introduce me around. I tried to say he's got Olive for that, but apparently that's not good enough."

Rather than persuing the issue further, Rose took it upon herself to get annoyed at the Minister. "Why in Merlin's name would he want to introduce you to anyone? You'd think he'd be denying you two were even related." She pulled a face and resumed searching through the crowd. "That couple over there, in the kimonos, are they ambassadors or just idiots?"

"Ambassadors," Basil said resignedly, without even looking. "From Japan. We got introduced earlier. Why, you wanna meet them? Sure they'd love to meet a daughter of one of the war heroes, c'mon!" Grinning, Basil reached for Rose's arm again, to lead her in the Japanese ambassador's direction.

"What?!" This was not what she had planned. "No! Basil, no!" She tugged herself back and refused to go any fruther. "Knock it off, you're being a bloody ponce. And embarrassing me."

"Well don't cause a scene," Basil said good naturedly, letting her go. "You see what I have to put up with? So how long do you think before we can sneak out, because I really don't want to be here."

"We can leave immediately," Rose offered, and she took his hand. "Right after you tell me why that blonde is staring at the back of your head so intently. Honestly, if you feel something burning, its her glare smoldering a hole in your hair."

Basil's expression grew pained. "Don't make eye contact," he said, shaking his head. "Please just don't make eye contact. If we don't acknowledge her, she'll go away."

Excellent. Rose leaned to the side of the Basil and waved. "Who is she?" Rose asked mid-wave. "She seems nice enough. Looks familiar. Is she one of the Ministry worker's daughters who has secretly pined after you for years? Basil, go for it, she's cute. Seems a bit slutty, too, what with that icky yellow hair and all. Give her a New Years kiss, mate," Rose teased.

Adamantly, Basil still refused to turn around, although his posture did stiffen for a moment. "That's Simone, the, uh, French Ambassador's daughter," he said, voice miserable, before Basil gave Rose a nudge and started leading her away, a hand on the small of Rose's back. "C'mon let's...not be here."

Oh. Her.

rose pursed her lips and followed where Basil led her, although she was all sorts of annoyed at this point. "What's she doing here?" Rose asked snobbishly, as if the party was exclusive to only the people of whom she approved. "She doesn't even live in this country. I'll go tell her to bugger off, the little tart."

"Told you, Dad invites a bunch of the ambassadors, because he doesn't care a bit about my emotional well being. And you're not helping matters, waving at her," Basil said with a glare. "Look, c'mere, now you have to dance with me or she'll come over here and talk. Look like you like me, would you?"

Rose scoffed. "Absolutely not. You got yourself into the mess of having too many girls to avoid, so you get yourself out. If you think I'm going to help you with her, you have got another thing coming." Rose stood there with crossed arms and annoyed face. "And I don't like you, so why pretend?"

"I wouldn't be in this mess if you hadn't gotten her attention!" Basil said, a little insulted. "C'mon, Rosie, you at least like me a little, don't you? Look, dance with me, it's the least you could do. I'd do it for you," he wheedled.

"Yes, but you don't have to do it for me, because I don't get myself into these sort of messes because you're a ponce and I'm perfect and you're dumb and I'm smart and you're an idiot and I'm brilliant at everything." She looked him up and down and sighed. "Fine." Rose took his hand. "But one dance, no kisses, and if she comes over here, I'm not sticking around."

Basil rolled his eyes, only putting up with her taunts because he knew she was at least sort of right -- Rose didn't get herself into these sort of messes. And on some level, Basil was glad for that. "Merlin you're vain," he grumbled nonetheless, just so Rose wouldn't know she was right, "Why would I want to kiss you? If she asks, though, it's because you fancy me so terribly I don't want to break your heart. Fair?"

He didn't wait for an answer, just shuffled forward, almost shyly, and slid an arm around Rose's waist, the other hand finding hers. "You do know how to dance, right?"

Rose glared. "I do not fancy you and I would never tell anyone I did for any reason in the world, so good luck with that."

Feeling his arm around her waist felt...funny. Not necessarily in a bad way, or even in a good way, just a funny sort of way that made Roses's heart pound once, very hard, in her chest. "I know how to dance, you git," she mumbled back, too busy trying to remember everything her grandfather taught her to get too annoyed.

"Shhh, just let it happen," Basil teases, letting go of Rose's hand quickly to give a piece of her hair a good, satisfying tug. But then he's beginning to lead them in time to the music, because if there's one lesson that Basil actually learned from his parents, it's how to dance. "Is she looking?" Basil can't help but ask, as they dance.

He tugged her hair again, glad that Rose had left it down for the occasion. "Hey, come on," Basil said again, shaking his head, "I'm trying to be nice and dance with you, and this is how you treat me? You're terrible. Why are we friends?"

"Because your parents pay me enough," she smirked, but returned to a normal dancing position anyway. "And don't deny it, you adore me. You love being with me and everything we do together brightens your day. You'd be lost without me and couldn't imagine spending New Years with anyone but me and a thousand of your closest friends."

Basil listened to her little speech, then raised an eyebrow and shook his head with a sigh. "You're lucky it's the hols, love," he told her amusedly, "Or I'd have to disagree. Is she really not looking? Not even kind of?" It was a blow to his ego, little as Basil would have liked to admit it.

"Do you want her to look? For the love of Merlin's bollocks..." Rose sighed and then flicked her hair over her shoulder with a quick head toss and then laughed--or rather, giggled--loudly. "Oh, Basil!" she cooed in a much different voice than she'd ever used around her best friend before. "You're too funny. Oh, and do watch your hand, darling, don't want the photographers to catch you being a flirt, now do you?"

Her brown eyes flicked passed him and with her normal voice she said, "Now she's looking. Feel better?"

Basil's grin was unabashed, and he was pleased enough to give Rose a twirl outward before pulling her back to continue the steps of their dance. "You're fantastic," he said happily, "When you want to be. Do all the blokes know how good you are at faking? I know I'm charming, really love, but you can't fool me. No wonder they can't get over you."

"You wouldn't," Basil said, almost a gasp. "I mean I'm just saying, Rose, it's happened before that you know, I hear things from other blokes, and I take it on good faith you didn't do anything to make them...moon over you, but I can see why now."

Rose rolled her eyes. "Merlin's pants, you're falling in love with me. Basil, knock it off. Would it help if I kicked you in the bollocks? Or if I let Frenchie cut in? Because I cannot have you falling in love with me, Basil, it would spoil everything ever."

Rose reached up and fondled the ends of his hair. "You still need a haircut," she lectured, although she was sure that if he ever got one, she'd kill him. "And I'm not vain, I'm truthful." Although he hadn't told her how lovely she looked. Maybe she didn't look lovely at all. Maybe she looked horribly ugly and the only reason Frenchie had dared look at them at all was because she couldn't believe that someone as dashing as Basil would ever be caught dead withs someone like Rose and--

Dashing? Merlin, Rose was losing it.
