The Green and the Blue
Rose hummed to herself as she wrapped presents. She sat at a long table, at the youth center that she volunteered at in downtown Metropolis. Today was the center's annual holiday party, and there were only a couple of hours left before the kids would arrive, and there was still a lot to be done.

Which was why she had invited Dex to help her. She wasn't entirely sure if he would show up, but she thought that it would be a good way for them to get to know each other outside of the Lantern business. Also, as Dex wasn't really familiar with Christmas, it would be a good way for him to get to know the holiday a little better.

And she also told him that there would be free food. Lots of it.

Dex didn't quite understand Christmas.

He did know that gift were exchanged, which meant he had to get Maura and Rose gifts, and there was something about decorating a tree. There was also something about a fat man in red in a sleigh pulled by some sort of animal with antlers and slid down chimneys or something. Somehow cookies and milk figured into it as well.

Humans on Earth were weird.

However, Rose did mention something about helping children and Dex didn't have anything against children and had agreed to help. He found them rather fascinating and it amused him how they generally said what they were thinking, no matter what it was.

He arrived at the location Hope had provided and stopped in the doorway. He looked around for Rose.

Spotting Dex, Rose waved. "Hi, Dex!"

She got up from the table, ushering him in.

"So...I know you're not really familiar with Christmas, but I thought that this would be fun. The kids always like seeing new faces, and the cookies made by some of the staff members are always really good, and we can decorate the tree, and you can learn some carols..." Her voice trailed off.

"Sorry...am I confusing you?"

"Hey Rose. Quite honestly, this whole thing is confusing," he admitted. "All I know is that there's gifts, a tree, a fat man in a red suit in a sleigh with deer and cookies."

She smiled. "Well, that's only part of it. It's actually a Christian holiday, believe it or not. It's all related to the birth of Jesus Christ. The gifts, tree, and Santa Clause came along later. Santa is actually actually modeled after Saint Nicholas.

While Christmas might not be so religious nowadays, it's a time where we can be with family and friends, and offer goodwill to those that need it the most. Opening presents on Christmas morning and baking cookies, but it's really all about giving and just being with those that we care about."

Oh good grief. She was launching it what her younger brother Jimmy called "Rose's Spirit of Christmas Speech".

"I'm...probably just confusing you even more."

Dex just shrugged. "A little. I'll be fine and will get through it. Just tell me what I need to do here."

It was easier to go with the flow of things instead of trying to figure them out. Dex wasn't exactly smart. He was more of a hit 'em and beat 'em up guy.

"If you want to, you could come to church with Grandma, Jimmy, and me on Christmas Eve. The children's mass is lovely. And you could come over on Christmas for dinner, too. Oh, and you could bring Maura, if you wanted to."

She smiled, walking over to the tree. "We have to put on the ornaments. Pretty simple. You just hang them on the branches. Someone already put up the lights. Which is good, because untangling them is never fun."

Dex blinked. "Uh, sure," he said, not sure exactly what he was agreeing to. He did make an effort to fit in and get along despite his rough exterior. "Do I need to bring anything?"

"Okay. Is there a special way to do it?"

"If you want to bring something for dinner, like a side dish or a dessert or something, you can, but you don't have to. We'll probably have already exchanged gifts in the morning." Though she would have to get something for Dex, and Maura too. She never had a lot of money, but she always watched her pennies very tightly at Christmas to make sure that she could get something for everyone.

"Not really," she said. "You just hang them like this." She hung a Frosty the Snowman ornament off of a branch. "Oh, and try to spread them out evenly, and not put too many on one branch, or a bunch on one side."

"Would apple pie be good? I've discovered that I really like it and want to make sure it's okay to bring. There's a bakery near where I live...."

Pie was okay to bring, right? He'll never get the hang of these Earth customs.

"Okay." Dex concentrated on the tree and looked for a spot that would fit the requirements.

"Pie is perfect," Rose said, "I'll tell Grandma, so she has one less thing she has to cook. Her cooking is to die for, by the way."

Rose went about hanging the ornaments on the tree, amused with how much Dex was concentrating. It was cute, in a way.

"Okay. I'll bring apple pie," he said.

He found a spot and carefully put the delicate ornament on the branch. "That okay? Should it go somewhere else?"

"Cool. That wasn't too hard," he said and was smiling. Dex knew he wasn't really any good at anything except beating things up, so he'd take the little successes when he could.

"It's simple, really," Rose said. She reached over to the box of ornaments and pulled out the star. "Would you like to put it on top?" She pointed to the tip of the tree. "You just put it right there."

"Okay," Dex said as he looked at the top of the tree. Well there was only one way to do this. He changed into his uniform and flew up to the top of the tree.

Very carefully he placed the star on the top.

"Nicely done," Rose said, smiling.

By then, a couple of the kids had wandered in, and seen the "real live superhero." A small crowd of them gathered around the tree, just staring at Dex in awe.

The kids all circled around Dex, asking him a tirade of questions. Was it fun being a superhero? Did he know Superman? Had he ever met Santa? Could they take their picture with him?

Rose smiled. "One at a time, guys."

Dex looked at Rose for a moment and then chuckled. He patiently answered every question that was thrown out at him. The kids were cool. Dex didn't mind kids, it was mostly adults he had issues with.

"I think my friend Rose mentioned something about cookies. Maybe we should see if there are some?" he said to the kids after awhile.

The kids all nodded eagerly in agreement, running towards the cookie table, leaving Rose standing alone with Dex.

"The kids really seem to like you," she said, smiling.

"You to them," she said, "That's all that matters. And technically, superheroes do beat things up."

"Not much else. We just help Santa hand out the presents to the kids."

"Cool," he said. "So do you live around here?" he asked. He didn't have the chance to get to know Rose as well as he got to know Maura. He knew she was on Earth and had helped him a few times in fights, but they hadn't spend any social time together.
