Waking Up meme.
Last night had been lousy. Sure, they'd gotten the job done, but Jack's having to use the healing trick was always a bad sign, in his opinion. It shouldn't come to that, right in the field. Jack vaguely remembered a few other problems as well, though he couldn't pinpoint them right now. And now, he was waking up ... in one of the science labs. He shifted around trying to ascertain why, when he realized what he was wearing.
Jack did not often get back into his black-and-white-semi-checked Counterweight costume. Heck, it was weird just seeing it on himself as a grown man. But he had been doing a lot of sorcery last night, and some things just fell into place.

Well, time to change back into his fieldgear until he could get to his own room and change. "Costume off," he said quietly to himself. But nothing happened.

The science labs, for good or ill, are a pretty normal place for Aleks to be sleeping, when he's on those nights he's confined to the rad chamber.

Hearing a voice, he pulls himself up and out of the chamber to go have a look, dressed in his usual sweats for sleeping at the lab.

"Problems?"

"Y'know, I've sometimes wondered if it was really a good plan to teach a bunch of elementary schoolers to use dimensional sorcery to handle their laundry. One of many, many reasons I don't tend to wear this thing... I think it's stuck."

"Yeah, I think I remember something about that costume from way back when, but haven't ever seen you use it in the field. If it were radiation based, that might be one thing. Sorcery, I'd be no help with, sorry."

"Yeah, there's a science to it, but it translates the way it does for a reason. I'll probably figure out what's wrong with a little time, or the lab types might think of something. Embarrassing, though. You doing all right? Just overclocked or whatever?"

Aleks shrugs. "One out of every three nights in here now, just to stay on level. I don't know if it was something to due with the missile incident, the fight, or something that was happening anyway - but ever since, gamma levels have been rising faster. Which means fewer extended field missions."

"Huh. Sorry to hear that; pretty concerning." And, well, this was SHIELD. Concerning things, especially this kind of concerning thing, caused concerns. Hence, yeah, would really put a damper on the job.

"I think Lena has a fair handle on it, anyway. Levels have steadied out - just have to come in for testing and more gamma drain than before. Its not escalating, far as we can tell. Just above the levels it used to be."

"She's the lead researcher on my project, so if she's short any updates, its her own fault."

"Well, she must be glad to set her own pace there, though from what I know of her, might over do it. I don't know her as well as you do, of course, and I'm not in much position to talk in any case." Jack sat and fidgeted with his not-very-fidgetable sleeve, still ready to stay in place through all conditions -- including Jack's wanting it off.

Aleks nods. "I suppose so. Still, I'd trade some time in the lab for a week on field assignment." A glance at the outfit. "So, how does all this sorcery stuff work, as far as the science of it, go anyway?"

"Understandable; hope things get back to the point where that's feasible eventually."
Jack smiles

"Fundamental manipulation of physics, is a natural physiological trait for Kymellians, just like with occasional mutants here, though whether sorcery is closer to elementalists like Magneto or to psionic reality-distortion mutations like Frank's is still up for debate. Sorcerers end up sorcerers by honing it, once one manages to get an intuitive grasp on any of the fields or energy transfers involved. Whitey gave us ... well, they've occasionally tried to classify it as a physio-psionic blood transfusion." They were legally on the rolls as blood-cousins to the family, for that matter. "It can be done for cancellation, too, leave someone unable to do it right anymore, but anyway, Whitey got us on the right tracks for the 'hard physics' stuff: mass, energy, acceleration, gravitation -- obviously, I ended up pursuing the last one long-term -- but there's also some biofeedback stuff, the healing trick, and, well, a spatial distortion/dimensional rift trick that some sorcerers pursue for teleportation, but, well, it was our first trick. We could use it to change clothes, and we stuck with it."

A bit of thought at that.

"Huh, quite a range of tricks, definitely putting it more scientifically than I've usually heard about from the magic-using things we've kept track of."

Jack smiles a little. "Yeah, well, I couldn't begin to guess what it is Dr. Strange does. Which is good; if I was in that line, I'd be even more of a headache around here."

"Nah, you're not a headache. All the guns and tactics are nice, but its kind of nice to know SHIELD has some powered operatives too."

"Exactly. And gives us a wider pool of options to draw on for threat response. Versatility is good."
