"And in a startling turnaround of events today there was a mistrial declared in the case of Carter Deems, alleged killer of Milla Donovan, wife of lawyer Matt Murdock. The judge cited that Deems wasn't apprehended properly and has taken a stand against vigilante justice in wake of recent severe activity by Daredevil."

Natasha hadn't really been listening to the news until she heard Deems' name. That it got her full attention. She listened intently and when the report was over a put formed in her stomach. Matthew. Natasha knew Matt and she knew how he was going to take this. Badly.

Natasha slipped on her uniform, attached her Widow's Bite and headed out into the concrete jungle that was New York. She had to find Matt before he did something stupid.

Matt is already racing across rooftops in the direction of Carter Deems' home, ready to find the man and see that he doesn't escape justice again.

Then he's going to find that judge and show him what severe /really/ is.

Thirty minutes later, he's outside of Deems' house, watching the man sit inside with several people, toasting his release.

The Widow found the Devil and didn't bother trying to be quiet or stealthy. She was not going to let Matt do this. Unfortunately there were times when the bad guys got away with murder.

"Don't do this," she said as she approached him. "You /know/ it's not right."

"Go home, Widow. This doesn't concern you." Matt rasps, not looking at her.

"What's not right is that this scum is free and breathing. The system failed, Tasha. I'm going to fix it."

"You're wrong, Daredevil. It does concern me because it's you. I won't let you do this to yourself. Yes, the system failed and it sucks, but there are other ways of making sure Deems gets what is coming to him. /You/ caused this, Daredevil. YOUR heavy handed and savage actions has led to this case being thrown out. Now their looking at other cases that Daredevil had a hand in because of your actions."

Natasha pressed the button to charge her Widow's Bite.

"I'm not going to let you do this."

"You're absolutely right, Natasha." Matt says quietly.

"You don't /let/ me do /anything/." he says.

"Just walk away, because I'd rather not fight you on this. But Carter Deems is going to pay for what he's done, even if it means more hospital time."

"I'm not going to walk away," she told him firmly. "There are other ways of dealing with this and you are not going to do something you will regret. Maybe not today, but one day you will regret it."

"I've already done something I regret, Widow. I /regret/ respect Milla's wish to leave her alone. I /regret/ not being there the night she died to stop that psycho from killing her.

I /regret/ not killing Carter Deems at the Eighth Street Bar that night. I'm fresh out of regret, Natasha. I've got a backlog of justice to dish out, though." Matt says, turning to go.

"I'm going in there after him. You can leave or you can stay, but don't try to stop me."

Natasha sighed. She didn't want to do this. Damn him for making her do it.

She brought up her right arm and unleashed a blast from her Widow's Bite. Sure it wasn't honorable to shoot someone when their back was turned, but honor didn't apply to spies and to friends trying to stop other friends from doing something stupid.

Of course, Matt expected the shot when his back was turned. He heard her raise her arm, the faint creak of leather upon leather. He'd heard her load the Widow's Bite early in the conversation, and then the faint skip of her heartbeat as she readied herself for action.

So he was already diving over the lip of the roof to the street, extending an arm to fire a cable and swing down. It won't take her long to reload or aim again, but he can still hear her from up there at the moment.

He runs at top speed for Deems' front door, ready to charge right through it and lay into the man who'd killed his ex-wife.

Natasha was a step behind him. She dived off the roof and fired her Widow's Line. The Widow sailed through the night air and tried to aim her landing so she would come down on top of him.

/That/ makes him angry. Even as she lands on him, he turns his fall into an awkward roll that allows him to throw her off and away from him as he comes back to his feet.

She was really going to push this, wasn't she?

"What the /hell/ is your problem?!" he snarls.

"You," she said not phased by the snarl. She'd expected it. "Don't do this."

Natasha was always carrying gadgets and whatnot due to her work as a spy and when she knew her opponent like she knew Matt, she knew what to use against him. She removed a small device from a compartment on her belt.

A light press to the device and it started to emit an ultra-high frequency noise. Natasha herself couldn't hear it, but she knew it would overload his hearing.

The moment the doors starts, Matt tries to shake it off, to cover his ears. To do something, anything that will make it stop. But the blessing of superhuman hearing is also the curse.

Natasha probably can't hear what she's doing to him, but Matt feels like the noise is carving its way into his brain and the rest of his body.

He collapses to the ground, trying to crawl away, before the pain finally becomes too intense for even that to be useful.

Shortly after, he's unconscious and the world is blessedly silent.

There was no time to dwell on the guilt that she now felt and the Black Widow never regretted her actions, but the part that was Natasha did regret what she just did to Matthew. She picked Daredevil up and hoisted him over a shoulder. She did not turn off the device. Daredevil waking up anytime soon was not an option.

A half hour later and after some strange looks by the cabbie, Natasha dropped Matt on the couch in her penthouse and turned off the device. She bound his hands and feet, trying not to think of the times she did this for fun, and sat down in a chair and waited for him to wake up.

He comes to and finds himself bound. That's disheartening, considering how close he and Tasha tend to be. His head is ringing from the use of the device, another thing that upsets him.

He can't believe she did that to him on purpose.

"Untie me, Natasha. Despite my ability to do so, I didn't hurt or attack you. I defended myself while you tried to beat the hell out of me." Matt says.

"I want your word, Matthew, that you will stay away from Deems," she said. She knew he would keep his word if he gave it. The hard part was getting him to give it.

"I did not beat the hell out of you, as you put it. I incapacitated you as efficiently as possible. I do apologize for it, but it was for your own good."

She made no move to untie him just yet.

"You attacked me, Natasha, and you interfered in something that wasn't your fight." Matt says.

"Deems is garbage. If I don't get to him, someone else will. I'm standing up for Milla! Why can't you see that?" he asks.

"No, Matt. You're trying to be judge, jury and executioner. That's not standing up for Milla and that's not what you believe in."

Natasha sat back in the chair. It was going to be a long night. Matthew could be stubborn.

"The judge and jury failed, Tasha. Deems should have gotten the Death Penalty, but that judge was paid off! He's in someone's pocket and Deems goes home while Milla lies cold in the dirt." Matt says.

"If it was you who'd died, Tasha, I'd be doing the same thing." he says.

She looked at him and felt sad. He wasn't the man she knew and loved. He was changing and it was definitely not for the better.

"It doesn't make it any more right if you would do it for me, Matthew."

"What is happening to you? Where is the man who believes in the law and justice and not personal revenge? Where is the man I love?"

"I've been watching law and justice fail for years, Natasha. I've been working both sides of the system, trying to make sure that some kid never had to grow up without losing his father or mother or someone close to them.

That some guy doesn't watch the woman he loves get murdered by a psychopath. Or the /same/ psychopath repeatedly.

And every time I put one of these sons of bitches in jail, I watch people like Wilson Fisk work the same law I live to uphold to get them off with little more than a slap on the wrist. Then they get out and kill someone else and we do this same dance over and over again!" Matt yells.

"When does it stop, Tasha? How many more people have to die before we do something more than watch the legal system get worked?" Matt asks. Yes, he breaks the law as Daredevil, but he's doing it to make sure that people don't suffer the way he has. He uses the law to punish the guilty, only going after them when the law is circumvented.

It's not the same thing, in his mind.

Natasha shook her head. "The system /is/ flawed, Matthew, and it's never gong to be perfect, but you have to work within it. Doing this...what you want to do...doesn't make you any better than them. You're going down to their level and it's not right. It's not /you/."

"You can justify it all you want, but it's nothing more than personal revenge and you becoming the same as them. There's a darkness in your soul, Matthew Murdock, and I'm concerned for you."

"Tying me up is really not helping me believe in that whole 'concern' you have for me, Tasha. But if you really need it, fine.

I won't go after Carter Deems for the rest of the night if you untie me. I've got other fish to fry anyway, starting with the appeal and investigation I'm going to launch on Judge Parker for this travesty." he says.

"You used to like it when I tied you up." Natasha shook her head. This wasn't the time for jokes. "No, Matthew. I want your word that you won't go after Deems at all. Don't go near him until we can do this the proper way."

Damn her.

Damn her for making him want her, even with his current anger at her.

"You shouldn't, Tasha. I'm still alive, after all." he says quietly.

"I need to go to the church tonight. I'm not fit for anyone's company." he says, moving away from her.
