Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
I managed to get a day ahead on making my cake for Cake Decor and Sugar Cookery. The cake has been baked, filled with coffee-flavored icing, stacked, imperfections repaired, crumb-coated, I made new/fresh icing, and iced the cake. So it just has to wait until I can decorate it. I'll be working on more icing roses until Tuesday when I have to decorate it in class. I'll make sure to take pictures, but until then...

Those are the 9 roses that I've decided I like enough to use. :3 I still have a few that i need to make... but I decided to do varying simplicities and colors so that it looks more realistic on the cake. :D Hopefully I'll get a good grade for it.

...I'm wondering though, since a large portion of our grade is based upon improvement, if I should stop trying to get better at each thing before it's due. >__>; I've been practicing by making tons of these with the intent of getting better, but now I'm thinking it might not have been such a good idea since our teacher is kind of old fashioned. She might not... really... understand that some people spend a lot of time practicing so they can improve over the course of a week. And believe me, those are improvements from my first ones. Which she didn't see because she was busy talking to her friends from the retirement home that had come to hang with her during class. -facepalm-

...I hope I didn't just fuck my grade over by being a good student.

Those are totally gorgeous!! And did you say coffee flavored icing? I think I'm in love! ♥

I hope your teacher stops being a douchnozzle and sees your obvious legit skill there.

Thanks! And it's very easy to make a cheater version if you don't want to hand-make your icing. Buy canned vanilla icing and melt it down in a double-boiler (a metal bowl over a pot of boiling water), then mix in instant coffee until the coffee is infused with it, then stick it in the fridge until it regains its stiffness. Obviously there are other ways to make it if you hand-make your frosting, but that's the simplest and quickest. XD (If you want some recipes for real good icing I can give one to ya. :D)

Hopefully. She's really nice, but she kind of... mmkay, let's just say if we don't show any visible improvement over the course of the class, we can go straight from an A to a D. It's like 40% of the grade. I've never done this before, but that doesn't really work for someone who LIKES to practice stuff like this. x__X

That's a really handy tip! I'm like...a horrible mess when it comes to baking. I'm good at most everything else but baking and pastries and all that...yeah it's not pretty.

It's so cool to read about your school adventures. I'd like to be a chef myself (which worries me because I hope I don't have to take pastry
classes because I will fail that with flying colors) one day so I think entries like this are really exciting!

You might be surprised about pastries. I used to actually believe I was absolutely horrible at making desserts and was only good at meals and such, but after you learn a few key things about how to cook certain things (how to melt/cool chocolate properly, properly sifting your sugar, the different kinds of flour and why All Purpose Flour is good for "everything" and absolutely nothing at all, and a few other little things.)

I think... you might have to take a pastry class or two, but I wouldn't really worry about it. I'm aiming to be in pastries and cakes, so mine's more concentrated on those things... but there are a lot of classes that aren't, I'm sure you'll be fine. :3 But, I'll hopefully be able to continue chronicling my adventures in pastry land! We're decorating the cakes on Tuesday, so hopefully mine will turn out alright. My first decorated cake, I'm excited. X3

Those roses look amazingggg and tasty and they're so pretty I don't know if I'd want to eat their prettiness or not!

adnfdfgdj your teacher needs a punch in the face or two if being a good student makes things more difficult for you. >:|

Thank you! :3 I worked hard to get to that point. You should've seen my first ones... XD They looked pretty sad.

I really hope it doesn't. D: I do that with my cakes and icing too... my grandma keeps asking why I take so long with it and I'm like "=_= BECAUSE THERE IS A NEED TO UNDERSTAND EXACTLY HOW TO GET IT RIGHT." At least it's only a few classes so far but... If I do somehow land with a poor grade, I guess I can always challenge my grade.

Wikipedia makes everything so much easier to understand. >__> And it amuses the hell out of me how all teachers insist it's so "wrong" all the time.

Yeah but not enough that you can't do a quick google search of information that you use to see if you can find it elsewhere to see if it's correct.
