Heroes Are Not Born...
Dolemeck Night was fortunate, the first job he applied to accepted his application, and now he worked in a used bookstore in lower Manhattan. He tried to not abuse his shadow powers too much at work, or where others could see if he did. His fellow co-workers were a bit "snobby" to him at times, and if Derek saw them he would label them all as "hipsters" or spoiled rich kids.

Tonight, the other two employees who were on duty decided to leave early. When Dolemeck asked why, he was told someone of his "class" could not understand, and that it would be his duty to close shop, tonight. While most would argue or cringe, he smiled. It was a big responsibility to close up the shop, and it could prove to his new boss that he was willing to work hard. Well, not just his boss, but his parents, Mac, and Derek as well.

It was now ten o'clock at night and time to close shop. He shadow ported with today's earnings to the back of the store, placing it in a safe that was in the ground floor of the building. Once the money was secure, he shadow ported to the front of the store, going to change the store's sign from "open" to "closed". It had been a long day, but so far, it was a good one.

They had been casing this place out for weeks. This place had a good deal of cash in it, more than one would expect for a dinky little shop to have. Even better, the new person in charge of the night shift was the snivelly little bookworm he ran into in Central park last week.

Of course, he was there for a reason...

And now tonight was the night. The ski mask is on. The gun was in and loaded. All that was left was...

CRASH!

"EVERYONE DOWN ON THE GROUND! NOW!"

So much for a quiet night. Dolemeck nearly got hit by the brick and mowed down at the door by one of the goons. He stood there looking confused at the masks they wore, and the demands for everyone to get down. There was no one left in the store but himself... and... everything was just happening so fast. he said the first thing that came to mind.

"I am sorry, but we are closed for the night, and you will have to leave. All of you. And before you do so, you must pay for the window you broke. That was quite wrong of you to do."

"I SAID DOWN!"

The pistol is swung at Dolemecks face by the ringleader, while the others scatter to the various places to find things of value. This means the register, the "rare books", and...

"Damn! Boss! It's onea them timer lockdown safes!"

There will be general ransacking of the store while they were at it.

Being pistol whipped was something new... and it hurt. Dolemeck fell down to his knees, spitting up blood on his shirt. The first time he decided to actually wear white, and now he ruined his nice new dress shirt. His long black hair covered his face as he looked about, watching the thugs rob the store he was working in.

"Those do not belong to you, put them back this minute!" He barked at the robbers, though his words fell on deaf ears. The store was becoming a total mess, and it was going to be troublesome to clean. "Leave that stuff alone!"

"Shut the hell up, freak! Stay right there or I swear to god I'm gonna put a bullet in your head!"

As if to emphasize this, the hammer is pulled back.

"You idiots! Just grab the damn thing! We can get the damn thing opened later!"

"I... am not a freak. And you are a complete fool if you think you and your men can get that safe OUT of the concrete floor. Especially since you have no tools for such a task. Besides... it does not belong to you and you are not allowed to take it!"

He was still talking, still not backing down. Dolemeck was naïve when it came to weapons, when it came to robberies. His green eyes just narrowed at the man who held him at gunpoint. His voice... sounded familiar to him for some reason.

"No, you're not a freak."

There is a gunshot. It's aimed specifically for a place that won't kill the loudmouth. The shoulder seems a good place.

"You're a smart-ass bleeding on the floor. Take what you can, boys. We'll get something out of this."

Dolemeck cried out as that object shot something into his shoulder. Something that came out the other side and started to cause him to bleed quite a bit. He was taught that blood is what kept the heart in his chest pumping and keeping his soul alive. This man... was making him lose blood. He wanted his heart to stop. He wanted his soul to die.

His green eyes narrowed, almost turning red as Dolemeck quickly shadow ported in front of the man who shot him, and then ended up behind one of his goons, punching him as hard as he could in the back of the head with his good arm (as his left arm was out of commission from the bullet wound).

Before any of them could act, Dolemeck shadow ported once more. This time he ended up in front of the second goon who was just in shock at this point. He landed a good punch to his stomach, hard enough that the man would throw up a large amount of saliva from the hit.

Finally, Dolemeck shadow ported back in front of the man who had shot him, grabbing him by the throat and lifting him up off his feet. Dolemeck was completely enraged at this point. His body hurt, he hurt, and these people... they wanted to take what was not theirs. They wanted to kill him. They wanted to take his soul. NO one would take his soul from him. NO one.

The mans eyes widen as the person he had just shot was...no longer there.

"What the-"

One of his guys goes down hard.

"Huck!"

Another of his does.

"Oh my-aaaack!"

And now there is a vicegrip on his neck. The gun is dropped and all he could do is gasp and struggle at the hand that had popped out of nowhere to grab him.

"I... could so easily send you and your "friends" to Limbo if I so chose to." Dolemeck snarled. He was really hurting now, his shirt felt soaked on one side from the blood he had lost. "But unlike some demons, I am merciful. Put back EVERYTHING in it's rightful place, pay for what you broke, and never return or do such acts again. Choose otherwise, and you will wish I had ended your miserable life, myself."

Dolemeck dropped the man he was holding and went to hold his shoulder. he staggered a bit as he moved back to where his register was and waited to see what they were going to do next. If they failed to comply, he was willing to risk his own moral code to ensure these beings did not harm others again.

"I am waiting..."

There are three very different reactions from the three men.

The one who had the gun had dropped to his knees, crossing himself and rushing through verses of "Hail Mary", the one how had been punched jerkily moves to put back what was messed up, and the third begins to cry.

"Don' hurt me, man! please! I-I-I'm sorry! I don't gotta whole lot of extra money and I was talked into this! Please don't hurt me!"

Dolemeck groaned, , leaning more up against the wall and getting his blood on it. This was bad. It was not stopping. Once the books were put away he yelled at the would be robbers to get out and never return. His voice even sounded slightly demonic, enough to scare them into never returning.

Once the goons were gone, he tried to close up shop as best he could. He had to stop several times because of the pain he was in and how light headed he had started to feel. He even managed to leave a note for his boss to document what happened and apologize for the mess he made with his blood.

By the time Dolemeck got outside, he was staggering like some zombie. He knew there was no way he could make it back to his own apartment in such shape. Even with shadow porting it would be risky. If he passed out while shadow porting, there was the possibility he could become stuck in the shadow world until he woke up or worse, in limbo. Neither idea was a good one.

"Derek..." He remembered that Derek was closer to this area and his cousin could help him stop the bleeding or perhaps put the blood back in his body he had lost. He could shadow port to his home faster than his own, but it was still a gamble. One he had no choice but to take.

Dolemeck shadow ported all the way to Derek's apartment, forming right outside the door to his place. he remember that he was not allowed to just port in anymore. It was rude and Derek said he wanted privacy if he was in a room with a closed door. His bloodied hand started to knock on the door, leaving marks upon it, before Dolemeck's legs finally gave out, and he collapsed on the floor.

Derek was simply enjoying the last of his day, snacking on some potato chips when there was knock on the door. He got up form his position in front of his computer and walked to the door, putting down the bag of chips on the counter before he looked out of the doors peephole.

And saw a mass on the ground. The door is opened, and once it's clear who the mass is...plus the material staining the door, Derek moves immediately.

"Hold on, Dole, I'll help you out."

The next few moments are a blur of movement and speed, trying to keep his hands steady as he inspects the wound, makes sure its clean, making sure there's nothing bad, ensuring the wound is covered...lots of things to keep in mind.

All the while with the worry for Dolemecks life.

"Derek..." He fought to speak at times. Everything happened so fast, and by the time things had slow, Dolemeck found himself sitting on the floor of Derek's bathroom with his shirt off and peroxide being applied to his wounds. He gave out a cry of pain as his cousin began to clean his wounds. His legs kicked about weakly over how much this process hurt him.

"Derek... there are... there are bad people in this world. They wanted... they wanted to... to kill my soul." He stammered, shaking like a leaf as Derek did everything he could to try and stop the bleeding. "They wanted to... they wanted to see my soul die. And for what? Paper currency? Derek... we need to do something. People like this... they need to be stopped. We need.... we need to stop them..."

His bright green eyes started to close, as he rested his head on Derek's shoulder. He felt so tired, now. Either from the trauma of nearly getting killed, or the fact he almost lost control of himself. It could be from the blood loss as well.

"Yes. Sadly, there are bad people. I have had to interact with some of their sleaziness before. They are in it for the paper currency, because it represents power. Over themselves. Over others. Over everything. They put more emphasis on control than cooperation."

There is some more bandaging, but it looks like it's taken care of.

"I'm going to put you on the couch while I clean stuff up. Is that okay?"

Dolemeck nodded his head, allowing Derek to help him on to his feet and guide him back over to the couch. He was worried he would worry the furniture by getting it bloody if his bandages started to get wet or the blood that had run now his now missing shirt were on his pants.

"I... I apologize in advance if I ruin your couch, Derek. I promise... I will buy you a new one." He gave his cousin a weak smile as he laid back on the couch with a pained groan. His eyes soon closed as he tried to combat the pain he was in. Never had he hurt so much.

"I promise... I'll get you a new one, and even... even clean up the mess I made. Just like... at work..."

"No need to promise me anything. It's not important right now, because I need to get you all healed up," Derek said as he finished the last bits of preparing. It looked okay now, but it must have been traumatic.

Once Derek gently places Dolemeck on the couch, he quickly grabs a mop and opens the door, quickly mopping up the area that Dolemeck had collapsed on. Luckily, most of the blood was absorbed by Doles shirt, but still...Derek just hoped no neighbors would come out to see Derek frantically cleaning bits of blood off of his door.

"How long does it take... to heal. And do we have to put all the blood I lost back in me?" Dolemeck looked a little confused, if not more pale than normal. Derek could tell by his somewhat calm reaction that he had never been injured before. If he had been, he would have known to take his scrawny tush to the hospital instead of his cousin's home!

This whole thing would be funny if it were not so sad. What Derek's Aunt Venus told him about Dolemeck was true. He had an innocent soul, despite his past as a demon. He was naïve, too trusting, and wanting to believe the world he loved had good people like in the books he read. But tonight, that image was shattered.

"It depends of on the wound, Dole. But it should be okay. what you should do is head back and call the police. Let hem know what happened. And take me, so that there's explanation as to why you're patched up."

Derek knows just how naive his cousin is. This is sad for Derek to see his cousin this way.

"As for the blood...It regenerates in your body. you can't just put it back in."

"This... explains as to how I could not put it back in it's place." He hissed, trying to stand up, only to feel his legs give way and cause him to fall back down on the couch. "I... not yet. If I try to shadow port in this shape and pass out, I may get stuck in the shadow world. or worse... fall through to limbo. I am also in no condition to walk about, nor will I be a burden for you to carry... literally."

Dolemeck clutched his shoulder, hoping his body was going to regenerate more blood, so he could be of use to his cousin. he never wanted to trouble anyone. Especially Mac or Derek. He shook his head, his long hair getting in his face as he forced himself to his feet and began to follow Derek out the door.

"Alright, let's go to the police. I think... I think I am well enough to walk. I do not... wish to trouble you more."

"No need to push yourself too hard, Dole. No need to do that at all. Just keep it easy and you'll be okay," Derek says, trying to be as reassuring as possible.

The walk to the bookstore is slow and cautious, with Derek ready to jump and grab his cousin a few times. Sure, he may have been overly cautious on this, but this was a big deal.

Dolemeck had closed the shop up, and even gone as far as to try and clean his own blood up from places inside of the store. Oddly enough, the police were already there. The goons that tried to attack Dolemeck were being rounded up in the patty wagon, and the owner of the shop was talking with the policemen.

By the time he and Derek go over to the scene, the shop owner rushed over to Dolemeck, asking if he was alright. He appeared to be truly worried for the young man and explained he had saw everything on the surveillance camera. He also began to mutter about firing the other employees who had left Dolemeck alone and failed to help him close the store.

When a police officer walked over to them, he began to ask Dolemeck questions. Questions on what happened, if he need an ambulance, and why he did not call 911 after the robbery. With the answers Dolemeck gave him, the officer turned to Derek, wanting to ask him something.

"Is... your friend a special needs kind of person? Because he talks kinda well, odd. If so, maybe you should not let him work anymore and you know... place him somewhere safe like a halfway house or something. The world's a dangerous place for... his kind."

"He's my cousin, and I would recommend you speak in a much more professional manner when talking about him. Especially when he is within hearing distance. Now, you take them in, I will make sure he files a police report, and just do your job without insulting members of my family."

This is said with cold fury. His cousin was hurt, there was an obvious problem, and yet this cop has the gall to to ask if Dolemeck belongs in a halfway house?

It takes Derek quite a bit to keep him from completely chewing this idiot out.

"Hey, hey! I am just worried about him, you know. A guy like your cousin should not be supervised if he is that slow." The police officer gave up and walked away from Derek before the shop's owner walked over to him and Dolemeck.

"I am sorry this happened to your cousin, Sir." He apologized to Derek, before looking over at Dolemeck. "Dolemeck, you should have given those crooks the money. If you did, you would not have gotten as hurt as you did, and you would not have made such a mess in the store. Look, I know you are a good kid, and those rich bums left you alone to work, but you did the wrong thing. I want you to take two weeks off to heal up, and when you come back in, we'll talk, okay?"

"It is quite alright. I understand and shall return in two weeks time." Dolemeck lowered his head as he was scolded for his actions and the mess he caused (while unintentional). His green eyes remained lowered as his boss walked away from him and went back towards the bookstore to close it up once more.

Dolemeck turned back to his "brother" Derek, looking confused now. "Why... did that officer wish me to live in a hallway house? I like my apartment. Why would I wish to live in half a house?"

"It's a term for housing for those less fortunate. Financially and mentally. He...thinks by your actions that you are a off mentally. He's an idiot for thinking so."

Derek doesn't even hide the venom in his words as he watches the cop pull away. Idiot. Moron. Asshole. So many words he wanted to yell.

"I'm sorry you had to deal with this, Dole."

"Am I off, mentally?" He looked confused at this, before shaking his head. "Please, I do not want you to be sorry for me. My boss is right. I should have complied with the goons demands. But that money was not theirs to take! I wanted... I wanted to be like Uncle Jimmy and my Father. I wanted to do the right things like they do!"

His eyes darted from the store, back to Derek. "Derek... why do we not have an Agents of Atlas here to stop such things?"

"Because the Agents have to work in the background, Dole. After all, it took Pops how long to get Atlas in line with the new ideology? That's just on the back end, too. It's why Atlas is doing beneficial biotech research now."

Derek sighs.

"And frankly, to be 'off' mentally is to be a member of this family. It's not every family that is made up of a secret agent, a mermaid, a siren, a space man, a gorilla, and a killer robot."

That last bit has a smile sent Doles way.

"But... why can't we be the heroes they once were? Biotechnology takes years to make, and while they are all working on that, who will stop the bad people who run about this city? Not every super hero group can be everywhere at once! We should do something... we should help!" Dolemeck spoke passionately about this to Derek. He really wanted to make a difference, now.

Tonight, his soul almost died. People wanted to hurt him for paper currency, bad people. And there were three of them and one of him. It made him realize that there needed to be more heroes in this world. Especially since no one came to aid him. And if this had not been him, but his co-workers... they could have died.

"We do not have to work in the background, Derek! We can make a difference, can we not?" There was suddenly a groan as Dolemeck grasped his shoulder. It was hurting once more, and the bandage was starting to turn red.

"We will, Dole. I've been seriously considering going on a team. But for agents, we're just two. if we could get more, we would. But Mac is an Avenger, Nim I don't know well enough about and she's on a team anyways...and even then the slow growth is the better long term means to facilitate change."

As much as Derek hates saying that, he knows it's true. This was a lesson his father beat into his head growing up.

"But we'll think of something. And we will. Now, lets get you to a hospital."

"I want to be on a team with you, Derek... if you join one, that is." Dolemeck hissed as Derek helped him to walk. He wanted to ask what a hospital was, as it was another thing he did not know.

"Growing up" with the Agents of Atlas, they had everything they could ever need or want. The real world was so different, and from what Dolemeck saw tonight, it was dangerous as well. Not everyone was like his Uncle Jimmy, Aunt Namora, Uncle Ken, or even his parents.

Dolemeck learned an important lesson tonight, one that he knew he would never forget. One that would drive him to hopefully become a better "human". Heroes are not born into this world, they are made.
