Once the whole mess was finally, completely over, there was time to talk.  There were a lot of things Ruth was feeling uncertain about.

Uncertainty wasn't normally her thing, really.

"Let's find somewhere we can talk?" She asked Jay.

Jay is just glad right now that the reaction isn't the one he mostly expected - a slap in the face and an angry shove off. He wouldn't blame her, mind control or no. Even if this is a break up, its still better than it could have been.

"Sure. How about the food court? The place has been mostly cleared, so we ought to be able to find some privacy to talk quietly."

He's quiet the rest of the way to the food court, then pulls a seat out for her, and goes to one of the few stands left open.

He gets her a jumbo cherry-vanilla milkshake, grabs a large coke for himself, and then a large cheese fries to split. It became their standard order here, since its all cheap but plentiful.

He settles in across from her, setting her drink in front of her and giving her first grab of the fries while he settles in.

"I'm so, so sorry."

"Thanks," she says as she takes it.

"I know. And I... I just kind of need to establish that if that had all happened entirely under your own will, I would never speak to you for a very long time."

"That's their responsibility, not yours." Pause. "Although -- and I realize we've only been superheroes for a figurative five minutes, so it's not like you had a better one -- there are obviously some serious flaws in your 'getting all up and flirty when dealing with criminals' technique."

"But anyway, this is not one of those ridiculous cases of blaming the girls who seduced the helpless boy, they did something to you. They did something to me too; I was so angry... except..." Ruth pauses, takes a breath. "Everything I was angry about were things I would probably have been bothered about it anyway; it just got harder to control. Now, what they did to you looked considerably different, but.... but I need to ask. Before all this happened, were you happy with our relationship?"

He sighs. "Obviously that was flawed, yes. I don't know what came over me, just... seemed like the right thing to do. But ok, let's put that aside and answer the question... its complicated. Why do you do all the extra studying? Put in the time reading and preparing for a demanding job that doesn't pay much, and has a lot of difficulties, like attending funerals, comforting people on death's door, helping counsel families through difficulties? You could be happier, right now, going to the mall, partying, going out with friends. And its something I've struggled with, because I always thought fast dates, hanging with the girls in short skirts, driving fast cars and drinking myself stupid made me happy... and they do. Its quick, its easy, it doesn't require anything of me... and I'm good at that. I fall back on easy like a champion. But there's no fulfillment, it'll just lead to more of the same until I do something even dumber than usual and, if I'm lucky, spend my life in prison or kill myself. You're the only person who ever really believed there was any other options for me. Most of the time, I don't believe it, and I love you more than I have words for. You're everything I really, truly want, and I want so badly to be the guy who deserves you - but I have a tough time seeing that guy in me, and I'm not very good at doing the right thing when its hard. You're a lot stronger than I am."

She listens, and bites her lip hard to prevent a snapped 'Don't Talk Like That!' about getting himself killed.

"Jay, it's not... you're not weak. It's just... I mean, how could I go around partying all the time when I've got Gail and Jane and Clara at home needing a good example? There'd be nothing easy about it. I have backup, that's all; and I really think that's all you need when you get right down to it. If you really were Mr. Path of Least Resistance, you wouldn't have tried to man up just now about screwing up; you'd be whining about everything that happened today ruining your life. But that's not you."

She set her hands on his. "I love you, Jay."

He nods. "The only thing I'll say about that, ever, then, is that nothing happened that makes me love you any less. If you say we're not over, then you're my girl, and I'm yours as long as you can put up with me, flaws and all."

He returns the kiss. Somehow he doesn't feel like he deserves this. He screwed up, she had to rescue him, and he didn't make any guarantees... but he's not going to complain. Just wonder at how lucky he is to have Ruth.

And it'll be a long, thorough kiss before she mutters, "Came this close to kicking your ass, you know.." The language, while not one of her absolutely avoided terms, is Highly Unusual.
