Playing hookey.
Katima elected to stay home from school after the incident with the football team and the cheerleaders. It wasn't that she was afraid of them anymore; Alerron had shown them pain and fear without even doing anything. It was more that she felt terrible for what had happened and more than that for just how disconnected she had been. School had taken a lot out of Katima, perhaps more than anyone realized. She wasn't exactly socialized as a child.

Which is why she decided that with the house to herself, cartoons and Lucky Charms were in order. The funny cereal was remarkably like something she barely remembered having as a child on Korugar before everything changed for her. Tucked up on the couch, she took a deep breath. She hadn't realized how very stressed she was feeling. And how awkward.

Always up early in the morning, Avalon was already up and about by the time Katima came down the stairs and decided to stay home. In fact, he was in the kitchen making hot cocoa for himself when he got the impression of.. confusion.. from the girl.

For whatever reason, he hadn't really gotten a lot of time with her. Between Lantern duties and school, it seemed that they only really saw one another in passing. Without even really thinking twice, Avalon decided to stick around after the other guys went off to school, and instead of making one hot cocoa, he made two.

Walking in from the kitchen, he gave Katima a shy little smile and said softly "You okay?"

	Smiling a little, Katima offered Avalon a spot beside her on the couch, blanket and all. "Yes." She frowned. "No. I'm not in a bad way. I'm just worn, Avalon. Is...that hot cocoa?" (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

"Yea it is, do ya want some? I made it before I asked.." he then said in reply before he sat down next to her and offered one of the mugs. "Henry showed me how to heat milk up in the nuker-thingy and it really makes it a lot better." he then offered. Quite comfortable with Katima there, he turned towards her on the couch so that he was looking straight at her, and wrapped his wings around himself in his own version of a blanket.

"You're confused." he then said softly as ocean colored eyes searched her face.

	"I would, thank you." She took the mug and held it in her hands for a moment, enjoying how warm it was on her skin. "I am, I guess. I'm not fitting in well here, Avalon." "They are predators, Katima. They smell blood and come running." replied Avalon gently, though his expression is sympathetic. "I'm sorry it keeps happening.. At least we only have a few more weeks of school and you'll be done.. and then you won't have to worry about those creeps anymore."

He cradled his mug too, though he sipped at it lightly after speaking.

"They keep calling me derogatory things.. I just ignore them." he then said, with a shrug. "But.. I think that I am more used to blocking out people than you are." he smiled softly, looking to her face, "You never shield yourself from others emotions do you?"

	Katima shakes her dark head and sets her cup down on the coffee table. "I don't really know how to, Avalon. I've never really been around other people. I was small when my family died. All I know is my Tribe and my training with the Warlords. There was no place to learn shielding. I was taught to observe, feel, use. "I hurt a lot," she admits. (Reply to this)(Parent)(Thread)

The news of Alerron doesn't even phase him. "I figured you had." was all he said, before Avalon brushed that off and focused on how she's feeling.

"Katima.. you're feeling confused because there are more than just your emotions inside of you.. And what I'm talking about doesn't make you not feel. But it lets you take a break and only have to keep company with yourself for a while." he says.

"Just imagine yourself standing on one side of a wall, with all the other people and emotions standing on the other side of the wall. Close your eyes and try to see that." he offered to her. 	"Sometimes you can hear the others through the wall, but it is faint." he said softly. "And sometimes, they will beat on the wall and try to make you hear them.. but your wall is thick and strong." 	Katima curled herself tighter to Avalon as she focused on this wall of hers, taking long deep breaths as slowly but steadily the various feelings she was reading began to vanish one by one. "Congratulations. You blocked me out." replied Ava in that same soft tone, though this time it was marked with amusement. Reaching out, he gently gave her shoulder a squeeze, and then raised his cocoa to his lips again, and took a healthy drink.

"Try this at school.. it'll help." he promised. "A lot of those kids don't even know what they are feeling.. you certainly don't need to if they have no idea.."

"They are predators, Katima. They smell blood and come." replies Avalon, honestly. He doesn't know much else how to say it, though he searches for the words. "Human young must figure out their social standing through this barbaric method that we have witnessed at school." he then says. "They don't have a cast system or royalty or anything like that, so they must figure it out all on their own. "Henry went through this all on his own long before we came along and ended up popular among the other kids because of it. We do not have standing, so much like the omega in a pack of drinadon.. They will pick on the least among them."

He then smiles a bit, his wings opening as he looks to her. "We are lucky that you only have a few more weeks. Two I think. Then you will be graduated and you will not have to deal with them. I am lucky because I have Henry to stand beside me after you are gone.. It is Josh who I worry about - he is a year behind Henry and I, and he will have to face the predators by himself."

"I don't know what I will do with myself once I am graduated and you will still have to go to classes in the fall. It will be very lonely in the house during the days. Many speak of college, but I do not think it's for me."

Katima smiled softly. Everything was still and quiet. It was nice and she snuggled a bit just to enjoy it for herself.

"I think Josh will be okay. People seem to like him. They find him precious. Which, of course, he is."

"Josh faces another challenge unique to himself.. although I share it a bit too." replied Avalon with an unhappy growl to his voice. "Humans are so funny about sexuality, and they seem to look down upon those who choose to love others of their own sex. I don't understand it, and he fears that hate."

It was nice to be getting happy vibes off Katima for once. The winged teen allowed her to snuggle however she might wish, simply leaning back more into the couch and shifting himself around the two of them so they are not sitting on feathers.

Katima played with the feathers a bit, gently running her fingertips through them, petting them a bit as she curled up a bit closer still.

"This is true, though I think somehow Josh is special. Many of the girls who are around him...I think they understand and as time passes, I think Josh's strength will surprise us. He did the heavy lifting of taking down that Red Lantern, after all."

Not really knowing what else to do (especially with her playing with feathers like that) he simply closed his arms around her loosely, letting her dictate what she might want or need from him. 	"Your feather's are soft," she whispered, closing her eyes a bit. She was comfortable, relaxed. It was so unusual a feeling that the girl felt very nearly drunk with it and her eyelids half-closed. Avalon just flushed a bit, glad that Katima's eyes were closed. He wasn't used to compliments - sure he got them plenty enough from Josh and Henry but.. those weren't quite the same. The feathers under her fingers gave a bit of a shudder, the silvery things shifting under her touch.

"All will be well." he then said softly, "This I know.. I just still worry for Josh a lot.." he then cleared his throat and said shyly "They've always been soft but.. they're just feathers.. nothing even all that special about them. My wings aren't even shaped like a particular bird's either.. Although I do wish they had been. It would make finding a place among my father's people... easier."

"Tell me about your father's people."

With her blue eyes closed and external feelings blocked away, Katima felt a bit as though she were floating in cool water. Her entire body relaxed even further as she listened to the gentle sounds of Avalon's breathing as well as his voice. She could hear the shiver in his voice after she touched his feathers as well as she could hear the hesitation in his voice. It was a revelation: to hear instead of feel.

"Is is from Starhaven.." replies Avalon, his tone soft. "They are able to fly in space with their wings; they can survive the vaccume of space without a Ring.. But I can not. I can thank him for my wings, however.. But sometimes I think that had I not become a Lantern, then I would not be much of a son to be proud of."

Idly, he toys with a bit of her shirt, rolling the fabric between his fingers as he says even more softly "I... was not raised on Starhaven, so I do not know their customs well. I am a warrior of my people, but not of theirs.. Father wants me to take the Great Hunt and pass that rite of passage."

Katima frowned a bit and opened her eyes before sitting up. What Avalon had said didn't make much sense to her.

"What did he mean by rite of passage? We don't really do anything. I spent time on Okara, but that was training, not a rite."

This wasn't the first time she had heard a rite of passage mentioned outside the Tribe, but she had no recollection of such a thing actually happening.

"You passed your training, right? You earned your ring and your staff... that was your rite." said Avalon with a gentle smile. He then tilted his head to the side, looking down at her as he opened a wing up some to make more room. he didn't want Katima to feel smothered.

"Every people is different. Earth does not have a standard rite, there seem to be many.." he offers as a way of explanation.

That news caused Avalon to all but gasp, and he looked at Katima with wide eyes. "Every Lantern must have their initiation." he then stated, before his expression clouded. Suddenly fearful but unable to name why, Avalon gathered Katima closer to his chest, his arms and wings closing around her protectively. "This.. is kinda a big deal." he said softly. "We need to figure out why you weren't allowed to transcend."

"I.. don't know." replied Avalon. "But I will have to speak with Henry and see what he suggests. It may account for your feeling so lost.."

He tried to find the words, then pressed a hand to his chest as he said "When I was chosen, I was taken to Odym for two days, and after those two days I decided to accept my ring... And then there was training. But.. it's all very sacred, at least for the Blues.. and while it's not exactly presented as sacred, it has much the same significance for the Greens when they get their ring.. It can't be just.. given to you. Not if you are Blue or Green anyway.." he drops his tone, "I could be wrong about Indigo.."
