Hate Crime
They'd only recently gotten back to New York. So much work to do. And now Gio was running a few errands while Andrew was engrossed in work and Angelo was tidying the suite.

She was carrying her canvass bag of acquisitions back towards their place when she heard the scream. It was agirl's scream. It was not a scream at a spider or a mouse or a pillow fight. Giovanna herself had screamed the way she was hearing once.

She ran toward the ally where she heard it. There were four men in Kevlaresque jackets and one very frightened young woman with platinum curls -- from which emerged long, long pointed ears.

"Well, don't you feel like big men," Giovanna says, eyes flickering.

"Listen, lady, this ain't your business. Walk away and forget about this little mutie bitch and we'll forget we saw you." the leader of the group says, pulling his gun.

The hatred is obvious in her eyes, but she closes them for just a moment as she lets the energy well up before appearing alongside the leader, and doing her well-trained best to dislocate the shoulder of the arm holding the gun, in a flurry of enraged archaic French at these flatscan bullies, additionally for insulting her with their assumption that she'd keep walking like one of their own cowardly lot.

The leader screams, dropping his gun as his Giovanna dislocates his shoulder with a wet pop. His knees buckle and he begins to collapse as two of the remaining men start to advance upon her.

The fourth man pulls his gun and puts it to the young woman's head.

"Let him go, bitch! Or I'll splatter her skull all over the pavement!" he yells, as a red dot appears on the side of his head.

Which is an ironic thing to be said, as fourth man's own skull is emptied of its contents the moment he finishes his sentence. His gun drops to the ground and his body goes slack.

The girl screams in horror.

The Punisher doesn't consider the screaming. He simply aims and fires at one of the two men advancing on the woman who attacked the leader. The second man's head snaps to the side and he also falls over, dead.

The third man has just enough time to look startled before a bullet hits him between the eyes and ends his life.

Then he steps into the alley and looks at both women, dressed in all black, with a white skull symbol on his chest. He looks at the girl and nods toward the head of the alley, telling her to go.

Then he looks at Giovanna and the leader.

"What are you going to do with him?" he asks, lowering his gun forty-five degrees so that it's not pointed /at/ the woman.

One can't entirely prevent a visceral reaction at a men's brains being splattered and necks being snapped, but Gio mostly does.

She stands a little protectively of the girl at first. That shirt is associated with the Punisher. The Punisher is known to be a baseline human. His sticking his neck out for a mutant girl or two is confusing and therefore uncertain. And she'll watch him very closely, with obvious concern, as the bloodsoaked girl passes him, crying. But when she does so safely, Gio will focus on the man wracked with pain beside her. Her eyes flicker with hatred.

"Plenty of things I'd like to do, but it's probably simpler in this case if I can say I let some human vigilante do things beyond my control."

"It probably is, Miss. This guy is a piece of garbage, but he's going to lead me to the dump, so to speak." Burke says.

"I'll take him off your hands if you want to go home. This guy and his boys have been snatching anyone they think are mutants off the streets for the last three nights. They're a member of some new hate group that wants to think it's the Purifiers." Burke says.

Sirens can be heard in the distance.

"They call themselves Humans Against Mutants. I can take him and leave, but that leaves the question of what you saw here tonight. Will you go to the cops?" he asks.

And Gio looks very French for a moment. "Hardly. Actually, if you don't have a more efficient way to beat the sirens, I can give you a ride, so to speak." She lets the charge build up again.

"I'm not goin' anywhere with you, you mutie bitch!" the man screams between bouts of whimpering.

He spits on Giovanna's shoes.

"My van is a block down the street. The faster we--excuse me." the Punisher says, suddenly interrupted by the man's racial epithet.

He takes two strides for a little momentum, then drives the point of his steel-toed boot straight into the man's groin as though he were kicking a field goal.

There's another scream and the man tries to curl into the fetal position, but can't while Gio is still holding his arm.

"The next time you talk without being asked a direct question, I'm going to cut your tongue out of your mouth and make you wear it. We clear?" he asks.

He looks back up at Gio.

"Let's use you method for the moment." Punisher says, as if the man between them hadn't spoken at all.

...It's a clear sign of the fact that she's a Bennet that kicking a man in the groin and threatening him seems a reasonably gentlemanly thing to do, in the circumstances.

She'll enjoy the fact that teleporting is clearly scary to This Scum.

After a quick ascertaining of which direction, she reaches the hand that's not holding the scum for the Punisher, and the three of them materialize at the van, Gio near-collapsing from the strain of taking two other people even so short a distance. She'll get in if and when at all possible. "I just.... need a chance ...to get my breath. And... do you have any water or cloth to clean off ...my bag?" It had gotten blood on it. "And...my shoes."

He finds the teleportation a little disconcerting, but he's fine. When he sees the young woman start to have issues staying upright, he leans her against the van and opens the door for her to climb in.

He slaps a pair of handcuffs on their prisoner and marches him toward the back of the van, opening that door and tossing him in none too gently. Then he goes back to check on the woman and make sure she didn't just fall over dead. Satisfied that she's in the car, he gets in.

At her request, he reaches down into a cooler between their seats and passes her a bottle of Arrowhead water.

"That's the best I've got until we get to my place." he says.

"What should I call you?" he asks.

"Thanks."

She keeps the blood from drying into the cloth of her bag completely. That should make it easier to clean.

"Gio." She watches the stress just a little, so that it sounds like it could be short for Josephine instead of Giovanna. The Punisher might have noticed the slew of foreign-language cursing, but there's no need to connect the dots to a local diplomat, especially with scum in the back who might get lucky and somehow survive all this. And here she always told Angelo they'd never need a nom d'affairs.

"You're the Punisher." Somehow she figured he'd be older. "You're human." Part of her can't believe it was her idea to get in a vehicle with a strange heavily armed human.

"Right on both counts, Jo." Burke says, pulling the vehicle onto the street and away from the scene. He drives at a normal rate, obeying all traffic signs and laws. No one has cause to look at the unremarkable gray van with the ladder racks twice.

"Something about my being bothers you. While I'm not normally in the business of making people feel better, I'll tell you that I dislike racism, be it by skin color or quirk of birth." he tells her.

"This piece of trash, however, has information on more people like him; I intend to put those people out of business." Punisher tells her.

"Just not used to meeting humans willing to stick their necks out for any of ours," she freely admits. Maybe because she's met very few besides the politicians. "It's...good to know." A little disconcerting, but good.

"I definitely wish you the best with it. I'm tempted between want to stick around to hear what kind of threat these unoriginally named Purifier-posers are posing, and knowing I should just clean up and head home before I do something that'd really upset my boyfriend."

"Humans, like mutants, come in lots of flavors, Jo. You've got scumbags like this guy and you've got politicians that stand up and fight for them. I also don't see too many mutants really willing to stick their necks out for each other. Everyone seems focused on keeping their own asses intact." he says simply.

"My views on mutants and humans run the same; don't hurt any innocent people and I don't have a problem with you." he says.

"If there's somewhere you'd like me to drop you off, I'll take you. It's probably better that you don't know what's happens after you get out of the car." Punisher says.

"Definitely an efficient approach when they do." Human or not, she had to admit he made more sense to her than her Andrew sometimes did.

Gio thinks for a minute, then names a street corner just far enough from their building to keep him from any possible attention, for from being entirely obvious about where she lived.

He'll drive her to the street corner in question, scouting the area to get an idea of what part of the city she's from. He doesn't know what she was doing tonight, but she didn't have a connection to the girl or they'd have left together. Is she another one of the heroic set? He doesn't know, but he does know what she looks like, so he'll know her if he sees her again.

Burke will stop the car and get out to open the door for her. Last he saw, she was drained after moving all three of them. The last thing he needs is to have her get out of his car and then drop dead.

"You did a brave thing tonight, Jo. I hope you don't have to put yourself in that position again, but thanks." he says.

"Can you make home all right from here?" he asks.

Gio manages to get out, still tired but able to walk.

"Thanks for the assist. I'll be okay. I can walk now, and I think I got the bloodstain out enough no one'll ask questions. Don't worry about what somebody might ask the victim, either; I saw her eyes, and they were definitely not on your face.

Punisher nods.

"Don't worry about this guy, either, Jo." he says, nodding at their guy in the back.

"He won't bother any other young woman or mutant after tonight ever again."

At that, the man in the of the van begins to panic.

"Hey, get me out of here! You can't leave me with this guy! You mutants say you want to live in peace with humans, prove it!" he yells.

Burke sighs.

"I thought I said something about you and your tongue if you spoke again without being spoken to." he says, looking to the road.

"Good night, Jo."

The windows on the van roll up and Punisher drives off with his prisoner.

Gio just coldly raises an eyebrow at the van, nods politely to the Punisher, and heads towards her building.
