Happy Birthday!
Natasha opened her eyes. It was morning and she was actually waking up on her own instead of to the cries of her son. It was a very rare occasion. Maybe sleeping a little extra longer was Nick's birthday preset to Tony. She turned over and was not too surprised to find her husband still in bed. So far he had been up with her each time that Nick woke her up.

"Happy birthday, my love," she said as she leaned up on an elbow and kissed his cheek. "Moose and squirrel." There. She said it. For him. For his birthday.

Tony smiles the moment the words come out of her mouth.

"Now," he yawns, opening his eyes to look at her, "was that so bad? Don't you just want to say it again and again?" Tony asks.

Of course, it's his birthday, and while the idea of getting older isn't appealing, he's got a new baby boy to spend it with. Eddie was the best gift he could have received, along with a "Moose & Squirrel" from Tasha.

Well, there are /other/ things, but Tasha's in no shape for that right now.

"So, what's the plan, Super-Spy? Do we have breakfast with our son or stay in bed? I'm all for staying in bed, myself." he says, hoping Eddie is asleep for just a little longer.

"I was thinking a few more quiet moments in bed while we have them. Then breakfast with our son." Natasha shuffled over to be next to him and put her head on his chest. The slow steady rhythm of his heart could be heard and the world seemed to slow down. "The kids are taking you to lunch today and then they are going to babysit tonight while we go out to dinner."

"This plan, as the kids would say, is made of pure win." Tony says, cuddling with his wife.

"Where are we having dinner, tonight? I can call Del Frisco's and get us a private room tonight, unless you've got some other plans?" he inquires.

"Wherever you want to go. You're the birthday boy so you get to pick."

Her fingertips traced lightly over his chest. Moments like this were so rare for the two of them and Natasha was going to enjoy every second of it. Nick was bound to wake up and start crying any moment.

"Del Frisco's it is. I want steak so badly I can taste it." Tony says, relaxing under his wife's fingertips.

"Did I mention you were amazing the other day at the hospital?" he asks.

"Steak would be nice," she said. "Though I really want coffee." Now that she was no longer pregnant she was allowed two cups a day. She'd be back to the normal amount when she was done nursing Nick. Still, two was better than one.

"You did, but I can always stand to hear it. You were pretty amazing too."

"Coffee would be excellent right now, my love. If you run, I'll chase you to the kitchen." Tony grins.

"You were amazing the other day. I think Eddie showed up in record time. I bet the next one will be even faster." Tony says, kissing Tasha on the forehead.

He waits to see if she has any reaction to that.

Anya walked around the penthouse with a fussing baby in her arms. Of course Nick would be an absolute angel until Mom and Dad walked out the door and then it was non-stop fussing. She took babysitting duties so Mom and Dad could go out to dinner for Dad’s birthday. The kids, minus Nick, had lunch with him and gave him his presents then. Tonight was Mom’s turn with him and the kids had all volunteered to babysit. The old folks needed a night out without any of the kids, including the one who was only five days old.

“I know Mom and Dad aren’t here, but you’ll just have to deal with me and your other siblings,” she said softly to the fussing baby. “How about some music while we walk? Music may help soothe and calm you. Mom said it used to work for us.” Anya made her way over to grab the remote. She turned on some Sinatra at a low volume and resumed walking. “Hopefully you’re a Sinatra fan,” she said to the infant. “If not, we’ll find something you do like as long as it isn’t Justin Bieber.”

Anya kept moving and the fussing slowly abated and she sighed with relief. “Seems like you are a Sinatra fan,” she said and looked down at the infant. He was adorable, but of course he would be. He had good genes. They all did. “You’ll fit right in with this family,” she told him. “Mom said she used to play Sinatra to calm me and Misha down when we were fussing. Looks like Ol’ Blue Eyes has the voice Romanov babies like.”

Anya slowly made her way through the living room and was heading toward the kitchen. “If you haven’t realized it, you’ve been born into a pretty crazy family. Some may say we’re all stark raving mad, pun intended.” She chuckled. “We /are/ crazy, but we all love each other and we’ll always be there for each other. That is the most important thing to remember. Sure there will be times when we don’t particularly like each other, but in the end we’re still family and family /always/ sticks together.”

She dropped a kiss on the tiny little forehead.

“You’re a lucky kid. Do you know why?” she asked as they moved through the kitchen. “Because this is one pretty amazing family. We’re not a conventional family, but it works for us. Mom and Dad are both pretty darn amazing and you’ll be the first legitimate kid. Of course you are a Stark, so you’ll still be a bastard. All Starks are bastards and we like it that way.”

“Your siblings are pretty amazing too,” she continued. “Misha and James are dorks, but they’re really great brothers. Just don’t tell them I said that. It will go to their heads and they won’t ever let me live it down. You can always count on them being there for you when you need them. Eliza is a great sister and like the brothers dork, she’ll be there for you too. I don’t know Stevie that well, but that’s because I have my own /issues/.”

“A best friend is vital and you need to get one as soon as possible. Next week would be good,” she joked. “Toni is my best friend and has been since I was three weeks old. It’s a Stark and Rhodes thing, which unfortunately you won’t have a Rhodes around your age. I don’t think Uncle Rhodey and Aunt Monica are going to have any more kids, but that’s okay. You will find a best friend and you’ll always have someone watching your back. I don’t what to think what life would be like without Toni and I don’t want to.”

“If you decide to kick bad guy ass like others in this family, you’ll get some enemies. It’s part of the whole suit thing. It sucks, but it’s life.”

“You’re a Stark, so you’re going to do stupid things. It’s a universal law or something. So if you’re going to do something that you know you shouldn’t be doing, don’t get caught. You should be smart enough not to get caught, but if you do be prepared to pay the consequences. Oh and always learn the rules so you can break them properly. That’s important. And if you lose, don’t lose the lesson.”

“I’ve made some great Stark screw-ups already, but I paid the price for them,” she said. “I learned some valuable lessons from them. Which is the whole point. Learning from your mistakes. You can also learn from Mom and Dad’s mistakes. They’ve made some doozies, but they’ve learned from them and so can you.”

“The media will always be a part of your life because of who you are. You’re a Stark, but you’re also Russian Royalty. Expect to have cameras and photographers around at all times. That being said, reputation is what other people know about you. Honor is what you know about yourself. Guard your honor. Let your reputation fall where it will. And outlive the bastards.” Anya smiled. “Dad gave me that advice when I was very young so now I’m giving it to you. Don’t worry, I give it to you again when you get older.”

“When you start dating come and see me. Or Mom. We can tell you what girls really want and what you need to do. I know Misha and maybe even James will want to give you advice, but guys will never fully understand girls. Mom and I will give you tips on how to shop for girls too. Chocolate is always good, but it’s not the only thing. And don’t worry; I’ll give you lots of practice carrying bags for a girl. It’s an important boyfriend role.”

“You will find The One one day and when you do, well never forget how special they are and never let them forget how special they are. Even when you think you have things all planned out, they’ll come along and shake things up. It’s not a bad thing. Your life will be better for it.”

“Just remember that even the greatest hero can be a consummate idiot when it comes to affairs of the heart.”

“If you do decide to go into the family business of being a hero, there are two important things to remember. If you can’t do something smart, do something right. A great team is important and treat them like they were your family, because they will be. The Avengers are awesome and so are the Thunderbolts. I’m lucky that I have three great families.”

“I think it’s time we see if I can stop walking and put you down in your bed. You’re already tiring me out and you’re less than a week old.”

Anya walked over the bassinet which had been moved out into the living room for this evening. She kissed his forehead again. “I love you, Nick. I promise you that I’ll always be here for you and will always have your back. No matter what.”

She carefully placed him in the bassinet, making sure to lay him on his side. “Sweet dreams, Little Man.”

Words of Wisdom(?)

She'd bowed out of attending the birth, feeling too much of an outsider for that, but the kid was, in some weird way, kind of her brother, so Stevie did eventually stop by to see him.

"So you're the new one, huh? Well, I'm hoping you don't even have time to remember me, kid. Soon as MC fixes her doodad, I'm gonna be out of here and back home where I belong. Your dad, not-the-mama, he's nice enough, but it just isn't home. And see if you can get him to shave off the porn 'stache, okay?"

She let out a little breath.

"So here's the deal, little guy. You're gonna be a Stark. And a lot of people are gonna tell you that means a whole hell of a lot and that you've got a lot of responsibilities to live up to. But it doesn't. Don't ever let anybody tell you who you're supposed to be or what you're supposed to be or what you want to do with your life. You want to give it all up and go fix motorcyles somewhere in Jersey? You want to open some bakery in Idaho? Whatever.

You follow your dreams, not anybody else's. Don't ever get tied up in what people tell you you have to do. Only thing that matters is that you do what makes you happy."

Words of Wisdom- Justin

Justin stops by to visit Eddie/Nick and catch up with Misha and Anya as well. When the midget is alone, Justin stops into see him and finds the little boy lying in his crib, looking about at his surroundings.

"Hey, kiddo. Well, I'm Justin Rhodes. Yeah, you'll probably see a lot of me, seeing as how your family and my family are joined at the hip. Your dad and my dad have been friends for years, and my mom basically keeps your dad from being completely uninvolved in his company." Justin chuckles, reaching into slip his finger into Eddie's hand.

The baby grips the finger with surprising strength and Justin smiles at him.

"I wish I had something really awesome to tell you about how life is going to work out, but I'm pretty new around here, too, so I can only tell you the things that I know from my own life. Where I'm from, I knew your dad, but he didn't have kids and he wasn't married. Life didn't go so well for him, though he did whatever he could to make my days better than the last. I come from a world that isn't a lot of fun and is really scary, Eddie. I hope you never know a place like that." Justin says quietly.

"The most important thing I can tell you is this: honor your mother and father. There are going to be a lot of times, as you grow up, that you don't agree with the things they say to you or tell you to do. You'll think they're being unfair or just making you do something because they can and you don't have a choice. Nothing is further from the truth. Every parent does what they have to do to keep their children safe.

You may not like it or understand it, but trust your mom and dad, because they've seen a lot more than you know and all they want to do is help you. So do your brothers and sisters. They all love you and they all want you to have the best and happiest life you can, pal." Justin says, taking a deep breath and thinking over all the times he and his father had argued about some point of tactics or how best to employ the suits' designs.

Justin had been so full of youthful arrogance, convinced he knew the suits better because he'd helped Uncle Tony design something here or there, rather than trusting his father, who'd flown side by side with him for years. Sometimes, Justin woke up late at night in Tina's apartment or his own, not remembering where he was for a moment and would stumble down to his workshop, expecting to see Uncle Tony or Dad hard at work.

When he finally remembered where he was, he would go back to bed to find Tina worried about him or he'd simply be unable to sleep any further, saddened at how much he really missed his dad.

"And every day, you should tell your parents how much you love them. Both of them. Tell your brothers and sisters that you respect and appreciate them, because you never know when one of them will save your live by risking theirs and you'll be left with a thousand things you always wanted to say that you never did, or a things that you /did/ say that you wish you hadn't. Never say something you can't take back, Eddie, because your parents are getting older. All of us are.

Someday, you'll have to have this talk with you own children and I hope you'll be a better son to your father than I was to mine." Justin finishes, dabbing at his eyes a little.

"Just be a good son, little man. And on the off chance that there isn't a Rhodes coming in the near future, it's you and me, kid. Got it?" he asks.

Eddie coos a little bit, seemingly drifting off to sleep again.

"I like that plan, too, pal. See you soon." Justin says, turning to go.

Wisdom from the Other sister (Eliza)
[info]ladydevil
2010-11-22 04:45 am UTC (link)
She was checking on Nick when she found herself hovering. She couldn't help it. He was awake and acting like he might like to be held. Or that is at least what she is telling herself and she is sticking to that story.

"Hey there Nick. I'm your sister Eliza," she coos. He looks at her pretty blankly because he is still very much an infant. She can't help the smile.

"I gotta say first? Welcome to the mad house." There is silence because what can Nick say? She laughs softly as to not scare him. "We're not that bad. Life can be scary but listen to Mom and your Dad. They want the best for all of us, sweet pea. And we'll take on the world to look after our own. That's what family is all about."

She wonders if Nick will get just how hard they'll fight to protect him. He can't. Not yet. He's just a baby right now.

"But here's the thin, Nick. We'll also support you. Anything you want to do we'll back you up. We'll let you mess up so you can learn from your mistakes. We'll love you no matter what you do, kid. That's what this family is about. Just be your personal best, Nick."

She laughs when she notices he's asleep and puts him back in his crib. "Sleep well sweet heart. We'll keep an eye on you."

Misha put a small, stuffed bear cub in the corner of Nick's crib and patted the sleeping baby's back.

"Well kid, I'm supposed to say something wise but there's no point because you won't get it now, and they're probably recording everything that goes on in here. Where I'm from it's telepaths."

He leaned against the crib rail. "There's not a whole lot I can tell you but the best advice I ever got was from my dad. 1 - You can never go wrong if you take care of your best girl first. 2 - Mom will always be your best girl. 3 - If you have to lie about something then you know it's wrong and you have no business doing it anyway. 4 - Your family is the one behind you when you need them, and when you don't. 5 - There is no excuse great enough to get you out of the monthly dinners. I can't even use an injury to my favor since I'm the mutant. 6 - Disagree all you want, but don't you dare disrespect your parents. 7 - Pay attention because everyone around you can teach you something important.

"There are a few things I figured out on my own. Anya really does make appliances commit suicide, so stay out of the kitchen when she's in there. Double check anything she says with me or James. You'll probably see him most because he lives here, but you'll have me on speed dial and I'll see you at the monthly dinners for sure. When it comes time to date, I'm your first call. Your dad is old and James is...well, James. Guard your electronics because you might get an AI who'll make you buy her things. That's under the Anya List, by the way. You'll get to have your very own Anya List when you're older."

He waited politely through a baby yawn. "The family is pretty weird, but we do okay. You'll see when you get older." He patted the baby again and left the nursery.

James stood near the bassinet and looked down at the infant inside. Babies were...strange. He had never really seen one up close like this. Though he was happy to have a new brother.

"I'm James," he said in a low voice. "I'm your other brother...in a way. I'm not from this world, but Tasha took me in and considered me family. The others did too. I hope you will too."

"I don't really have much advice except for always love your family, no matter what shape it comes in. They're a great family and you're lucky to have them. We both are I guess. We'll always have your back no matter what happens cause that's what family does. Sure, we're all crazy in our own way, but that's what makes it fun."

"Oh I guess one more thing would be to pick on Anya as much as possible. She's a brat and she gets away with it. Misha and I can give you some tips on what you can do to her. We'll be more than happy to help."

"Anyway, I'll let you sleep or do whatever it is babies do. We got your back kid and welcome to the world."
