Hope For the Best, Prepare For The Worst (open to family)
Natasha sat down on the couch and opened the sealed manila envelope the courier had just delivered. She knew what it was, it was an updated copy of her will, but she wanted to check it over for errors. Jen had been great about doing this on such short notice, but Natasha didn't have too much longer before the baby would come.

It wasn't that Natasha thought that something would happen to her during childbirth, but she was going to be prepared. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst. She lived her life by that thought. It had helped keep her alive this long.

Natasha read the document, noting all the assets that were listed and who they were slated to go to just in case something did happen to her. Sure she was married to one of the richest men on the planet, but Natasha had a considerate amount of wealth in her own right. There was money in numerous bank accounts across the world in her different aliases. Collecting all of that information and remembering what was where and under what name had been a chore and a half, but it had given her something to keep her occupied while Tony worked. In the end she got it all organized and had drafted up a new will.

The kids of course would get the lion's share of her estate. It would be divided evenly between Misha, Anya, Eliza, James and the baby. There was even a small part set aside for Stevie, her step-daughter, if the girl remained in this dimension. Tony of course would get her physical assets to do with what he saw fit. She still had a few safe houses in the US and a few in other countries. She hadn't sold all of them when she sold the majority of them last year for Tony's birthday present. There were also a few cars and her personal items.

She continued to look for any errors as she read the document.

While Tony Stark was not a ninja master, as many of his other friends could claim to be, he enjoyed the belief that he'd picked up the ways of a art called "hover-less hovering". In this discipline, one always managed to be in the vicinity of a one's pregnant wife without actually being on top of her and asking her if she needed anything every two minutes.

Tony usually asked every three, or sent a text to ask if she was feeling all right. After the time spent in Natasha's body, he was acutely aware of how much she put up with daily without complaining or making a case out of it. So, Tony went the extra mile to make sure that she was comfortable.

He walks in with a cup of Tasha's favorite tea for her and one for him and sits across the table as she reads. He does not immediately ask /what/ she is reading; she will tell him, or not. Besides, it's a pet peeve of his to be interrupted while he's reading, so he tries not to do it to anyone else.

"How are we feeling, honey? You and Eddie okay in here?" he asks.

She looked up and smiled at him. "Thank you for the tea," she said. She wondered if her husband was developing psychic powers because she was just going to get up and get a cup for herself. "Tired, but otherwise good."

She put the papers down on the table and picked up the cup of tea. "How's work going? Pepper giving you enough to keep you occupied?"

"I thought you might like some to go with your heavy reading." Tony says.

"Work is good. I have some other concerns on my mind, namely you and the baby, but things are good at work." he smiles.

"I've also talked a little to Stephanie as well and that bridge is being built slowly but surely. It is odd that I'm hoping she stays, Tasha? Even with how...awkward it will make things?" he asks.

"You don't need to worry about us as much as you do," she told him. "We're fine and you're right here."

"It's not odd, Tony. I was the same when James and Eliza showed up and I didn't know them then." She smiled. "It just means you're a great dad and care about your kids, even if they are from another dimension."

"After the childhood I had with Howard and the stuff I went through, it still hard for me to believe that I'm as good a dad as Anya says." Tony smiles.

"Still it's nice to hear. How's it going in there, Buddy? How are you?" he asks Tasha's belly.

"You're a great father, Tony. Don't ever doubt that," she told him. "You did a great job with Anya and even James and you'll do fine with this baby and with Stevie."

Natasha put her hand on her stomach. "He's fine. Kind of quiet right now though. I think he's resting up for another big bout of kicking."

She slid the papers over to him. "If you want to look it over. Make sure everything is covered."

Tony sets his tea down and accepts the papers, nodding solemnly when he sees that it's her will. In his mind, he knew that she'd be doing this eventually, so he should have expected it. He simply hadn't wanted to think about it, because it meant that he also needed to update his own will.

He goes over the documents line by line, nodding here and there. The idea of him having control of her physical assets was little sobering. He wasn't quite sure what he'd do with them, but he'd find a use for them.

"I need to get mine squared away, too, before Eddie arrives." Tony says.

"Wow, he'll be here next month, won't he? It still feels like you only just told me yesterday." Tony says.

She lifted a brow. "Afraid I'm going to shoot you between now and when Nick is born?"

"Yes. A month left to go. Also a month until your next birthday, Mr. Stark. Is there anything specific you want to do or should I let our daughter plan it?"

"Hey, it's possible. I mean, you won't say 'Moose and Squirrel' and I keep trying to get you to say it." Tony smirks.

"Actually, I was hoping that maybe you could convince our daughter to /not/ make a big deal out of it this year? I don't need a party or any big production about things. Having my family around me is all the gift I really need." Tony says.

"Oh, and you saying 'Moose and Squirrel' for me on tape. I'd really like that." Tony chuckles.

"Oh you don't want much at all, do you?" Natasha said with a grin. "I will mention it to her, but she's a lot like you. She gets an idea in her head and she doesn't let up."

Natasha shifted to a relatively more comfortable position.

"We could do the same as last year. You can have lunch with the kids and then you and I can have dinner."

"Lunch with the kids," she said. "You know some of the kids don't get up before noon if they can help it." That would be James. She wasn't sure about Stevie, but from the way it sounded at the family dinner she was another one who liked to sleep. "I hope Nick would be joining us since your birthday is after my due date."

"Lunch with the kids, dinner with Eddie." Tony smiles. "Yes, we have great kids, but they all need lots of sleep, except for Anya. I almost afraid of Eddie getting that whole Stark inability-to-rest-thing-going." he says.

"I'm with you there," Natasha said. "I don't feel like going another three years without sleep." Natasha would swear that Anya only took cat naps during her first three years. Natasha had gotten more sleep on missions.

"Do we want to think about getting some extra help for after Nick is born?" And if something should happen to her. She knew Tony could raise a child, but he couldn't do it on his own and it would be unfair to stick Pepper or Rhodey with the job.

"Maybe we should think about a nanny. I don't like the idea of having one too often, but neither of us are spring chickens anymore, despite the fact that you still look as hot as the day we met." Tony grins.

A little over a year ago, he'd nearly been killed by a car bomb and been out of commission for a month. Unlike Tasha, Tony had no super-serum keeping him young. He was an old man and getting older each day.

On the off chance something happened, he didn't want to burden Tasha with raising the baby alone.

"Something tells me that Eddie will like his sleep a lot for the first three or four years...because he'll be saving up energy to make our hearts stop at random for the next fifteen." Tony laughs.

"I was thinking about a private chef, not a nanny. I can handle an infant, I can't handle cooking. But you know, maybe we should interview for a nanny just in case something happens to me."

"I really hope you're right."

"Nothing is going to happen to you, Tasha. You're in great health. The doctor said so...unless there's something you neglected to tell me?" Tony queries, looking at his wife for a moment.

"We have to be prepared for the worst case scenario, Anthony. What if something does happen? You need to be prepared for that. Women die in childbirth all of the time."

"The doctor says I'm fine and I'm healthy. The baby's healthy. The odds are good that nothing will happen, but you know as well as I do that something could happen. You need to be prepared for that."

"/You/ will not die in childbirth, Tasha. You're going to be fine, Eddie's going to be fine and we're going to be two creaky old people chasing around a little boy who loves to get into trouble." he says, now getting up to go sit beside her.

He kissed her on the forehead and drew her close to him.

"This family is going to have lots more family dinners where Misha and Anya reenact their childhood, and you're going to be there to explain it all to Eddie." Tony smiles.

She leaned against his chest. "I don't plan on dying, but it doesn't hurt to be prepared."

She knew he didn't want to face the possibility that something may happen to her, she didn't blame him, but it never hurt to be prepared for any possibility.

"The nursery is done and we're fully stocked on baby items. All we need is for Nick to arrive."

"Smart woman." Tony chuckles, kissing her, then kissing her belly.

"Not like you're going to let Mommy relax much for the next month, are you, Buddy? I can't wait see if you kick as much outside the womb as you do inside." Tony smiles.

"I am totally okay with him kicking outside as long as he is kicking you," Tasha said sagely. "And just remember that if you're going to pee when you're being changed, do make sure you do it to Dad here. While he's talking about 'zero point energy' with Reed."
