Characters:Meka and Open! Setting:Saturday afternoon, the woods on the school grounds Rating:PG, it's Meka Summary: Meka sneaks out to the woods again for a smoke break and some art
Meka had brewed her coffee and started working on her latest art project for class but she had already hit a block. After throwing herself on her bed and rolling around for at least fifteen minutes she forfeited to the nicotine craving that was poking her in the side and pulled on her hoodie.
She made her way across the school grounds with all of her art supplies, her cup of black coffee and of course her cigarettes. She settled down at the base of her favorite tree and struck a match match. She closed her eyes, enjoying the first drag of her cigarette.
Unlike most of the other students at the institute, Ben was an early riser. (Much to his roommate Bobby's dismay.) He'd woken at around 8 am on a weekend day and thought he might make the most of his free time by searching the woods for new specimens.
It was something the other students generally thought of as creepy, so he liked to get to it earlier rather than later. That way, he'd get it all out of the way by the time most of his classmates were waking.
He was actually on his way out of the woods when he noticed a familiar figure seated a few yards away. Adjusting his bag, he wandered over.
"I didn't think you were the type to make yourself into a fire hazard."
Meka grinned lazily at the sound of a familiar voice. "Yeah, I tend to do that to myself every so often," she opened her eyes. "What are you up to today?"
"Collecting," Ben said simply, avoiding the question. Sure, Meka might have known a bit about his hobbies, but it still sounded nicer than 'I picked up some dead animals, and might have killed a rabbit.' He slid his bag behind him, a reflex.
"What about you? Going to set fire to the woods and try to draw it?" He asked, deadpan, with the barest hint of a smile.
She laughed gently. "I was trying to work on an art project," she looked at the blank page in front of her. "It's going really well," she grinned and took a rather long drag on her cigarette.
"Care to join me for a bit while I contemplate whether setting the woods on fire is a good idea or not?" she teased.
"It's always a bad idea," Ben shook his head, almost laughing. He glanced behind him and shrugged. It was hard to explain to your friends that you had to leave because there were dead things in your bag.
She grinned. "Yeah, figured," she took a sip of coffee. "You're pretty good at keeping me in line."
"Oh," she frowned a bit. "You got big plans for today?" she leaned a little, trying to get a glance at his bag for any sign of why he would be leaving.
"I guess?" Ben shrugged, not really knowing what to say. He mashed his lips together in a line, and that line crooked over to one side. If he spent time pondering it, they might be there for a while.
"Not big." He took a step back, already trying to make an exit. "Just. Time sensitive."
"Oh," she said, sitting back, feeling a little shut down. She tried to push the feeling out of her stomach but she couldn't help it. Why do I have to like him so much? He obviously wants nothing to do with you. She shook her head.
"Magical biology homework?" she asked, trying to get him to stay for another minute.
"Yeah, well. No. Something like that. Just. Yeah." Ben kicked some rocks around under his sneakers, feeling stuck. Not that he minded being stuck with Meka. Just. Dead animals. Bag. Dead animals in his bag.
"I mean, unless there was something..." He paused mid-sentence deciding it was stupid. A breath, and he tried again. "Was there something else?"
She looked at her shoes feeling stupid. "Oh... um... well... not really," she shrugged. "Just wanted to hang out I guess. No big, we can always uh hang out later?"
"It's not a big thing," she took another drag on her cigarette to shut herself up.
