Wakanda

This nation is not what it once was.

The final test of wills between the monarchs of Latveria and Wakanda was won, but at a terrible price.  There has always been The Great Mound.  The massive unnatural deposit of vibranium that was the source of Wakandan technology, Wakandan progress, Wakandan strength and Wakandan culture.  But to stop Doom from taking over the world, T'Challa had to sacrifice the processed vibranium that had been stolen to power his armor and his army, through the use of "shadow physics," a mystical study he'd undertaken to combine alchemy with quantum science.  Becoming more like Doom in the process than he'd ever wanted to be... and yet, entirely willing to sacrifice the power he held for the greater good - something Doom would never do.

The ordeal has left his beloved country bereft of economic health.  He may still be Chieftain of the Black Panther clan, but his sister Shuri is now the princess regent and in charge of the actual running of Wakanda - as was made necessary by the intensity of his mystic studies and convalescence from an earlier attack from Doom that nearly killed him.

The rebuilding process will take time, and if there is any boon to be found here, it's that Wakanda no longer holds any interest for the international community, now that the precious resource that every other nation wanted to find ways to steal is no longer present in enough abundance to matter to them.  Wakanda will now fall into that category of African nations where the Western nations will only glance at their problems and muse quietly to themselves that someone should do something to help, and then do nothing, for there is nothing for them to gain.

Wakanda has traditionally been a relative island of stability in the midst of regional ethnic wars in neighboring nations such as Ghudaza.  There has certainly been conflict within its borders between the city dwellers and the marsh tribesmen, between progress and tradition, but there was always an overriding belief that the king always had the best interests of Wakanda at heart, despite his world travels and insistence on ending their safe isolation.

Now, the Wakandan people are not so sure.  The unthinkable has happened.  Everything they always warned about ending their isolation has occurred, and the majority city dwellers shift between rage and despondency as their advanced world crumbles around them, and the tribesmen are often far too quick to take pleasure in the pain of their anguish.

And all of them blame T'Challa.  They wonder why he cannot just bring the vibranium back with the same alchemy that took it away, now that the threat of Doom has ended.  As if that threat could ever end.

The Panther had seen that the strength of Wakanda had also become its weakness - its crutch.  It's dependency, and there was always a finite supply, no matter how great that supply seemed to be.  If Wakanda was to thrive, it would need to diversify.  He would much rather have done so while still retaining the vibranium strength, for that diversification would be a much easier process, but it can still be done.  It must be done, and T'Challa will make every effort to aid in achieving this goal.

Perhaps then, and only then, will he bring back the vibranium.

The trouble now is that the trust in him has faded.  Words of support from Shuri have been less than effective, as she is still proving herself as worthy to hold the throne.  There have been reports of Black Panther Clan idols being torn down, or defaced, which can only serve as fuel to the fire of M'Baku and his outlawed White Gorilla clan... not to mention the delight it must be causing for N'Jadaka, the man known as Killmonger.

These are difficult times for Wakanda.  The burden lies heavily on the shoulders of the former king.

"You are beginning to remind me greatly of another man on whose shoulders is great weight. Brooding is not attractive on him, either."

She'd let her husband soak in his thoughts long enough so when she spoke and broke to his presence, there was something of a smile on her lips. She hoped she may find one on his as well.

To her credit, after a heavy sigh, she will find exactly that as he turns in his chair to face her.

"Forgive me, beloved. It is far too easy a habit to fall into."

"And that's why I say something. I don't want to have to buy you red glasses." She smiles. "I would ask you want troubles you but I know what your troubles are."

"Indeed. The whole of the nation knows my troubles."

His smile fades fairly quickly into something else as he stands and steps towards her.

"I only hope you do not suffer the consequences of my actions."

She sighs and brings him into her arms.

"I will not pretend that that is not a possibility, T'Challa. But I've been through worse and I haven't forgotten the skills that carried me through those times."

They have had to support each other through difficult times before now, but in this embrace, she may feel that weight on his soul more heavily than any other time before.

"If only I had found my way to you sooner..." he muses in a near-whisper as his head rests on her shoulder and a hand strokes through her stunning hair.

"You have been wonderful to me. Despite this life I've drawn you into."

"We found each other at exactly the right time. You had a lot of things to learn, you being all skinny and in need of direction. Why, it's a surprise you ever did without me."

She's smiling as she presses a kiss to his temple. They had needed each other and they both knew that.

"You turned a thief into a queen. It's not such a bad life, not even now. Even with the great challenges that lay ahead."

As she rubbed his back, Ororo felt that weight. It troubled her.

"You are still king in your heart and it's from there that you will change things."

His eyes close at that small kiss. Trying to draw comfort from her strength. Her presence.

"I fear I have changed too much already. Wakanda has interests diverse enough to keep herself afloat, but this..."

She knows. She knows all too well.

"My people may no longer allow me to change things. I pray they do not hold their animosity towards me against Shuri as well."

"Sometimes, you have to do the right thing even without the permission of others. Do what must be done. The people may not see it now, but later. And Shuri will be fine."

She keeps him close.

"This is a challenge. Challenges are not inherently bad."

"That is true," he breathes, his thumb stroking her cheek as he pulls back to look into her eyes. Those powerful, unique eyes.

"You have always been quite the challenge."

"I've been the challenge?" Ororo mock-scoffed. "You're the one who has so often tested my patience, T'Challa."

That smile of his widens - the effect she has on him.

"Which is why it was such a challenge to convince you it was a good idea to become my wife."

"A king making a queen out of a thief. I'm still not entirely convinced it was a 'good' idea, T'Challa, though I do believe it was a very pleasurable one."

She flashed him a smile that could only be described as wicked before kissing him softly.

"You were right; there is an unbreakable bond between us."

"You have always been so much more than a mere thief, beloved," he says, finding her presence to be supremely soothing... and finding that smile to be supremely thrilling.

"This former king has made a former queen out of a goddess. Some would say that was an unfortunate trade for you."

That soft kiss is returned, with a bit more urgency as a hand slides down to the small of her back.

"I'm still a goddess," she murmurs and kisses him back, biting a bit at his lower lip. "You tell me so regularly."

"You do make a habit of proving it to me," he breathes, his lips dotting along her jawline, down her throat.

"Over and over again..."

"Mm. You could stand to have it proven to you again." She kisses him again and then pulls away from him, taking a few steps then extending her hand to him.

"Come. I will prove to you I am a goddess and that you are still my king."

She smiled.

"I miss you, T'Challa."

That smile is returned, and he takes her hand to follow her lead anywhere.

"I have been too long absent from my own life," he admits. "I have missed you as well."

The warm grin gets a little more sultry.

"Will you show me what else I have been missing?"

"I will show you everything, my love."
