One Night In The City
Dallas Brand stands on the street corner of Park Avenue in Gotham, now known as Crime Alley to world at large, and watches as a homeless man sits sleeping against the wall of a notary building. He wishes he could give the man a bit of money to get out of the street this evening, even if it's just to buy a sandwich, but some things just can't happen when one is dead. He knows that this man doesn't have much longer to go, which is why Dallas is here.

He looks at this man who seems downtrodden by life and wonders what his story is. What led him to this place? He sees a wedding ring on the man's left finger. Is someone waiting for him somewhere, or are they long gone? The longer Dallas watches this man sleep, the more he wonders who else would care about where this man had come from, which brings a song to mind.

"I found God on the corner of 1st and Amistad
Where the West was all but won
All alone, smoking his last cigarette
I said, "Where you been?" He said, "Ask anything"

Where were you when everything was falling apart?
All my days were spent by the telephone that never rang
And all I needed was a call that never came
To the corner of 1st and Amistad

Lost and insecure, you found me, you found me
Lying on the floor surrounded, surrounded
Why'd you have to wait? Where were you? Where were you?
Just a little late, you found me, you found me

But in the end everyone ends up alone
Losing her, the only one who's ever known
Who I am, who I'm not and who I wanna be
No way to know how long she will be next to me

Lost and insecure, you found me, you found me
Lying on the floor surrounded, surrounded
Why'd you have to wait? Where were you? Where were you?
Just a little late, you found me, you found me!

The early morning, the city breaks
And I've been calling for years and years and years and years
And you never left me no messages
You never sent me no letters
You got some kind of nerve taking all I want!

Lost and insecure, you found me, you found me
Lying on the floor, where were you? Where were you?

Lost and insecure, you found me, you found me
Lying on the floor surrounded, surrounded
Why'd you have to wait? Where were you? Where were you?
Just a little late, you found me, you found me!

Why'd you have to wait to find me, to find me?
"

Dallas sings his heart out, imagining the crowd around him, even though he's certain no one can hear him. No one's been able to hear him for over two months, so why would they now.

Still, it's the closest he gets to a live performance anymore.

Sindella was on one of her rare patrols of Gotham City. She did them from time to time. She wasn't as active as the Batfamily, but she tried to help out where she could.

As she made her way through Crime Alley, she stopped when she heard someone singing. In her head. She could sense the presence of someone...new. Newly dead, at least. Someone she hadn't talked to before. And she had talked to a lot of people over the years.

"That was lovely," she said when the song was over.

"Thank you. I appreciate it." Dallas says, opening his eyes to look around. The man near the building had been joined by a woman. He hadn't stirred, but she'd like the performance. Dallas was content to--

Wait a minute.

"Wait...you can hear me?" he asks, bewildered. "Can you hear me?" he asks.

Sindella nodded. "I can."

Dallas just stares at the woman for a moment. In three months, he's only met people that get a chill when he's around, but show no other visible response. Now, here's someone who can hear him, out loud.

"You're the first person I've met who's spoken back. My name is Dallas. You don't seem surprised to hear me. How long were you standing there?" he asks.

Then another, more urgent, question comes to mind.

"Can you see me?"

"I'm Sindella Zatara," she said. "I haven't been standing here for very long, just long enough to hear you singing. You're very talented."

Sindella shook her head. "I can't see dead people. I can only hear and talk to them."

"Nice to meet you, Miss Zatara. My name is Dallas Brand." he says by way of introduction. He's glad she can't see him right now, because the fact she can hear the dead drives home what's happened to him.

"This is a pretty bad part of town for you to be walking through alone, Miss Zatara. Are you all right?" he asks.

"Call me Sindella, Dallas," she said, giving him a small smile.

"And I'm fine," she said. "I go...exploring sometimes."

"Sindella is a unique name. I like it." Dallas smiles.

"Do you live nearby?"

"It was my grandmother's name," Sindella said, smiling back at him.

"I am a little distance away from home, but I will have no trouble getting back."

"That's good to know. Wouldn't want you to get into any trouble." Dallas says.

"When you get there...would you mind calling an ambulance for this man?" Dallas asks.

"I can do that now," Sindella said.

"Enohpllec," her cellphone appeared in her hand, and Sindella dialed nine-one-one.

Dallas isn't certain why he didn't ask her to do that instead of waiting until she got home, but the thought bothers him. Had he really considered that it didn't matter where this man died, only that he was going to?

"Thank you. Better that he passes on somewhere warm than out here." Dallas says.

"Thank you, Sindella." he says.

Sindella smiled. "You're welcome."

She looked down at the man. "Actually...on second thought... tup mih no eht ecnalubma." The man vanished, and would reappear on a stretcher in the ambulance that she had called.

"There," she said. "Now they can him some help more quickly."

He could tell her the truth, that the man would die on his way to the hospital, but Dallas didn't want to injure her feelings. She did what she could to make his passing more comfortable.

"That was kind of you. I've never seen power like that before. Is it...real magic?" Dallas asks.
