Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry
Who: Orla Quirke and Harry Potter
When: Shorty after classes
Where: Somewhere on the grounds, likely by the lake
Rating: PG
Summary: TBD.

While she knew she probably should have been inside, finishing up a homework assignment or studying for any examinations that might come up, Orla couldn't resist going outside for an hour or two. The castle was bursting with excitement over the news of the Halloween Ball and she just wanted to get away from all the noise and excited chatter that surrounded her. Inside, she could barely hear herself think and highly doubt she or anyone else would be doing their best work until after Halloween.

Legs splayed out in front of her and a small pile of rocks next to her, she idly went between writing a few lines here and there in an owl to her father and tossing a few pebbles in the lake. She had already told him about the upcoming Ball and wanted to know his opinion on whether or not she should attend and she already included in the letter the conversation she had had with Harry Potter the day the announcement had been made. What she hadn't put in yet was her questions about her mum - had she been outgoing or had she been as quiet and as introspective as her husband and daughter were? Mainly what Orla wanted to know was whether or not there was some truth in Katherine's words - was she unapproachable because she was so quiet?

Harry rubbed at his eyes, a hand drifting up to gently brush over his scar, just checking to see if the ache that seemed all over his head was at all there.

It wasn't.

It didn't make him feel better, though, as he walked from the owlery, having sent back replies to a handful of people. And now there was a long letter to read from Lupin and all of the eyes in the world seemed to be trained on him today.

Harry noticed Dumbledore's tomb across the lake and stared at it. It held him in suspension, and he almost felt relaxed. Maybe - a little sit here will help. He began to walk towards the water's edge, noticing Orla a moment too late to edge away. "Oh, sorry," Harry said quickly. "I'm sorry to interrupt."

Having been in her quiet seclusion for awhile, she hadn't anticipated or really expected anyone to come her way. Why would they when she apparently wasn't very approachable. Not that she minded. Being so allowed her to not have to think of anything to say or do in case a conversation became awkward and marred by silence.

So caught up in what she was doing and watching the Giant Squid, she didn't hear anyone approach and gave a bit of a start when they began to apologise. She turned her head, shielding her eyes from the sun as she looked up at him. It was Harry Potter. "Oh - uhm, no, you're not interrupting," she said, babbling a bit as her cheeks turned red. "I was just writing my dad a letter and seeing if I could get the Giant Squid's attention."

Harry laughed despite himself, looking out at the lake and forcing himself to not let his eyes rest on the tomb. He watched the squid and then looked back at her. "Are you and he mates? I didn't think he had much of a sense of friendship, to be honest," he said.

"Oh yes, he and I go back all the way to first year," she said lightly, but gave herself away by smiling. "He's actually incredibly antisocial and only comes out where many people aren't around - or so I've observed." Peering against the sun, Orla looked at Harry again to gauge his reaction. She was trying desperately to make conversation, something she supposedly needed to work on, but it wasn't easy to do and she wondered if she was miserably failing at it.

Harry grinned at her, laughing lightly. "See I try to best avoid him - him? It?" he asked, wincing a bit. "I've had my share of lake creatures I think I'm a bit done." He looked thoughtfully from it to her. "Maybe you have a career as a squid whisperer?"

"Him, I think, though I don't think anyone's ever gotten close enough to figure that specific detail out," she supplied when he stumbled over determining the sex of the Giant Squid. When he said she had a potential career as a squid whisperer, she raised her eyebrows and gave him an odd look. "Are you teasing me?" she asked.

"And I wouldn't want to be the volunteer," Harry shuddered, thinking about what gender detection would entail.

He grinned a bit sheepishly at her, adjusting his glasses. "Maybe just a touch of cheek yeah," he admitted. I don't know you, I should be more respectful - but all I am is serious and respectful to everyone who is not a close friend.

Orla laughed quietly at his reaction and shook her head. "Me neither," she said, crinkling up her nose as she thought about what that'd mean too.

"Oh, apparently I'm not very good at catching that sort of thing. Or so everyone in Ravenclaw says when they make jokes and I'm just standing there ten minutes later still trying to figure out the punchline." This time, she gave her own sheepish look and shrugged her shoulders. "Not everyone can be good at everything, I suppose."

"My girlfriend is the queen of cheek," Harry laughed, "I have to be pretty quick to catch up with her." He shrugged, giving her a crooked smile. "If we were all good at everything, then everyone would be quite boring." He began laughing again. "If you're in Ravenclaw, then you are able to get past that bloody knocker of yours. I'm so thick about things like that, I'd stand in front of it for hours until I finally buggered off and slept in a classroom."
