What do I do with this life left to me...?
Cerdian escorts his mother home to Poseidonis in silence, wanting to make sure that his father doesn't suffer in ignorance.

Upon their arrival, however, they are met by several soldiers who draw their weapons and do not look overjoyed to see them.

"What is the meaning of this? " Cerdian asks.

"Say nothing else, Cerdian. We are calling for Lord Garth right now."

Lord Garth? When did /that/ happen?

"Please tell my father that my mother and I are here. He will want to see us." Cerdian says, as something beyond the soldier catches his eye.

Poseidonis was in ruins.

"What happened to the city?" Cerdian asks, staring on in shock.

"You and Princess Caitria happened." the lead soldier says.

Cerdian's only expression is shock.

Dolphin squeezed her son's hand reassuringly. "We mean no harm," she said. "Please, let us speak to my husband."

She turned to Cerdian. "You didn't mean it," she said. "You had no control over what you were doing."

"Mother, did you...did you see what I did? Did I hurt anyone?" Cerdian asks as his expression changes from confusion to worry.

The tower where the Circle resides, where Cerdian learned to harness his power, has fallen. There is so much destruction that he can barely comprehend it all.

He and Cait did this? Why would they?

Cerdian barely has time to wonder before he feels a very subtle tug in the energy lines around him and a dome of bluish energy surrounds him and Dolphin, separating them from each other.

Only one person's energy domes are this color.

"Father? Father, where are you?" Cerdian asks, looking around for Garth.

Lord Garth of Atlantis is drawn, haggard and only on his feet by sheer force of will. The word that his wife and son had returned dragged him back to consciousness with a heavy heart.

He hadn't been able to find them over the last few weeks and now they were here to finish what they started. He couldn't let them, even if it meant dying.

"You took my wife and son, monster. I will see you release them, or I will die making you do so." Garth says, beginning to chant beneath his breath.

"Move aside!" he tells the soldiers, who hasten to get out of the way.

Dolphin placed a hand on her son's cheek. "You listen to me," she said in a firm tone. "It was not your fault. You and Cait were under the control of something far more powerful than you have ever faced. What you did was not of your own will."

"Garth, it's me, my love," she said. "Look at me. It's me, and your son. We are not what we once were."

"Father, if you won't listen to me, listen to Mother! She found me and brought me back here to safety. She would never lie to you." Cerdian says, trying to reason with his father.

Cerdian has never seen his father like this and wonders what he did that would drive his father to such actions. What did he see?

Garth /wants/ to believe that his wife and son have come back, but he watched Cerdian tell his mother how much he loved then tear her heart out of her chest while Garth watched.

He knows that if he guesses wrong on this, it could cost everyone here their lives.

"I...I cannot be sure that this is not a trick." Garth says, his voice faltering.

"Garth, you know I would never lie to you," Dolphin said, locking eyes with her husband.

"Look me in eyes if you think I'm lying. It's me, my love. I've come back to you. Just as I promised you I would. And so has our son."

A series of expressions war across Garth's face, fighting for dominance. Shock becomes hope which becomes disbelief before finally morphing into joy. His violet eyes glimmer with tears as he dismisses the prisons he's placed his wife and son in.

And then he gathers Dolphin in his ars and kisses her for all he's worth, his stubble tickling her face. Once their kiss breaks, Garth looks at his son. His beautiful little boy, who he feared he would never see again.

"Your mother never ceases to amaze me with the gifts she gives me, Cerdian. For the second time in my life, she gave me you." he smiles.

And then he catches his son up in a bone-crushing hug.

Cerdian smiles at his father and hugs him tightly, pulling his mother into the embrace as well. There is much to do and much to work on, but Cerdian needs this right now. He needs his mother and father to help him get used to being alive again.

Soon, he will have to face Lian and determine what his role in her life will be, if he ever has one. There's no guarantee of that anymore, no matter how many pinkie swears were made in their childhood.

Soon, but not today. Today, he just wants to be a son to his parents.

"I want to go home." Cerdian says, much as he used to when he was a boy.

Dolphin kissed Garth like she hadn't kissed him in the longest time. Which, she hadn't. "Later, I will show you how much I missed you, my love," she whispered in his ear.

She embraces her son and husband, not wanting to ever let them go.

"We will go home then, Cerdian," she said in a soothing voice, like she did when he was little.

Dolphin had noticed a change in her son in the past few days that he had been home. While yes, she loved getting the chance to mother him, he normally chose to be more independent...and she had never seen him so eager to help around the house, and when he wasn't in Poseidonis helping out, he was at home, helping either her or Garth as much as he could.

Something was wrong. She could feel it.

So, she decided to find out what it was. She went to his room and opened the door, peeking her head in.

"Cerdian? Can I come in, sweetheart?"

"Hi, Mother!" Cerdian says happily, looking over his photo album. He'd been removing several of the pictures from it, placing them in a stack nearby.

He pauses in his task and gets up to hug her, holding her very tight.

"So, I was thinking we could go exploring later and I could keep those no-good manta rays from bothering you. Oh, sharks, too." he smirks.

He always did that when he was younger.

Dolphin returned the hug. "That's sounds like a wonderful idea, Cerdian."

She peaked around him to see who was in the pictures with him that he was removing.

"Is there a reason you're taking out all of the pictures of you and Lian, Cerdian?"

"Oh, I'm, um, just starting a new album with those pictures." Cerdian lies.

He already had a shell nearby to put the pictures in. When he felt up to it, he was going to take those pictures to Lian and give them back as a sign of the end of their friendship.

She was a different person now, with different needs. There was no place for him in her life and the sooner he accepted that, the better off they would both be.

Cerdian sighs. He has no idea how she can still do that after all these years.

"It's nothing, Mother." he says quietly.

"Perhaps I just realized that you were right about some things, after all."

"That Lian and I were not meant to be. That she thrives on danger and risk-taking, like her father.

That she and I are of two different worlds, and those worlds will always keep us apart, in spite of what would bring us together." Cerdian says, listing off all the things his mother had ever said about Lian at one time or another.

"I should find a proper Atlantean woman and court her. I want what you and Father have, Mother, someday. But...I will not find what I seek on the surface." he says.

"I think it is time to devote myself to my people and my power." Cerdian says.

There was a long pause.

"Is that really what you want, Cerdian? An Atlantean woman, one who is quiet and does not care to go exploring, even if it means going into shark caves? Someone who prefers the 'safe' option over taking a path more adventurous?"

Dolphin placed a hand on his cheek. "Yes, I may have said those things about her at one point or another. But it was not because I didn't like her. It was because, in my own selfish heart, I wished that you would stay my little boy forever. But all mothers wish that. We are not always so good at letting go."

"Let me ask you something, Cerdian...do you love her as much as you always have?"

"The safe path has never hurt anyone, Mother. I could learn to love someone who did not enjoy the things I do, I am sure." Cerdian says, though his tone doesn't match his words.

He looked down at the floor, because his mother's questions were insightful, as always. She knew how to get right to the point with him.

"What I feel doesn't /matter/, Mother. She fell in love with another man and she is having his children. There is nothing I can do about that." Cerdian says.

"I love her, Mother, but her heart belongs to someone else. I bet you and Father never had this problem. You two were made for each other." Cerdian says.

"Everyone couple has their problems," Dolphin said. "Your father and I have our flaws, but we have learned to work together to overcome them. And that is what truly matters. It's being there to love a person for both their strengths and weaknesses that makes love worthwhile in the end."

She paused.

"What about this other man? Does he love her?"

"The other man is a monster, Mother. He kills people." Cerdian says.

Cerdian pauses, because this next part may upset his mother, but she has to know.

"Mother, the father of Lian's children is the one responsible for...what happened to me." he says.

"I don't know how to feel about that." he says.

Dolphin was silent for a long moment.

"Do you..do you think he might have killed you to keep Lian from you?"

She was fighting the urge to demand his name, and where she could find him so she could kill him.

"I'm certain of it, Mother. He brought his entire clan of killers to Star City to kidnap Lian and kill anyone who kept him from her. I fought them all, Mother.

It was just me against so many of them and...I was winning. Father would have been proud. But the Outsiders were too far away, being distracted by Damien's people. He came after Lian, and...I couldn't stop him. I volunteered to watch her myself, because I knew she would try to help and get herself hurt if no one else did." Cerdian tells her.

"And in the end, I failed anyway. She still loves him and she's having his children. There is no place for me on the surface, so I should accept this and move on with my life." he says.

He just doesn't know how.

"Lian never even knew I loved her, Mother. Not in all the years we've known each other. What good is it when the person you love doesn't even know you're alive when you're alive?" Cerdian asks.

He takes a deep breath and steels himself.

"I will end my friendship with Lian and cut my ties to the surface, Mother. It's the only way I'll be able to get on with my life." he says, resignation coloring his tone.

"Perhaps it is time to tell her, Cerdian," Dolphin said.

"After you died...your father talked to Roy. Apparently, Lian took your death very hard. She wouldn't even leave her room for over a week after you died.

Her feelings for this man might have changed, after watching you die in front of her at his hand."
