The Decisions We Make

Some decisions were just too hard to make.  Zachary stood in front of the man who committed the crime.  "They were just little kids!" he shouted at the man who cowered int he wake of the .357 Desert Eagle held at his forehead.  Zak was the one holding the gun.

"I-I'm sorry!"

"Sorry?!  Sorry doesn't bring them back, you son of a bitch!"

He pistol whipped the man to the ground, and then continued to point the gun at the man's face.  The bodies of the kids littered the ground, and blood make the concrete impossible to see.  All that Zak could see was red, death, and the man on the opposite end of his gun.

Lucas steps into the scene. The assessment is quick - its a simple scene, and sadly, not an uncommon one among those who are trained to fight.

"Zak... will more deaths bring the children back?"

"It could stop the deaths of more children."

"Are you sure? Or will their family be honor bound by traditions to swear revenge? Will their deaths anger someone else and feed into the cycle and create more violence?"

"If I kill this man, I can make him an example. People would be too scared to do the things he has done."

He steadied his hand, and began to take better aim.

"Because that approach has worked so well for the last few thousand years? If you kill that man, you will take away every chance he has at redemption. You will convince the other children who see this that guns solve problems instead of creating new ones. Can you be sure that where he committed the sin of killing children, you won't commit the sin of creating killers?"

"They won't be killers if they understand the right reasons to end a life. One man as low as this is nothing compared to the lives of innocent people."

"Are you going to explain that to each and every one of them? Every person who might see what you're about to do? Or are you going to assume they will somehow understand better than the millions who witness gang violence, and still want to be like their heroes? The ones who should understand that glorifying violence on television does not make it right? Or are you going to make one moment's decision, take away everything yet another person has... and hope that somehow because its you, people will understand? You have one chance, right now, to break the cycle of violence... to hope that he might truly be sorry, whether out of repentance or fear, or find sincerity. But you also have a chance to be the better person. But the decision rests with you."

"And what if I let him live, and he does it again? What if he gets out of jail, and kills more innocent lives. It would be my fault, because I let him live. It would be like every time he kills another person, their blood is on my hands."

He only began to raise the gun, but slowly. He wasn't entirely convinced, but it seemed like he was heading in the right direction.

"What if he doesn't? What if he repents and finds religion, tries to become something better? Those happen too, and somehow no one ever takes credit for giving them a second chance. If he does it again, it will be his hand on the gun, not yours. But either way, are you also going to take the credit for every kid who guns someone down who might have seen what you did here? Are you going to take credit for it if you kill him, and his family or his gang comes after someone you care about?"

He was silent for a moment, trying to think of a response to justify his intentions. But he couldn't think of anything. So he fired off all eight rounds in the magazine of his gun, missing the cowering man below him with each shot.

"I can't find an answer to those questions."

He puts a hand on Zak's shoulder.
"Because there is no good answer. If it was that easy, the world wouldn't face such hard choices. The best thing you can do, at the end of the day, is be the best person you can and be someone you can live with. However, for the moment, I believe the words you're looking for for your terrified man there is, 'this is a citizen's arrest.' You can still see it through to the end for the moment and get some resolution, you know."

"You're right," he replied to Lucas. And Zak stepped forward and picked the guy up off the ground by his collar. "This is a citizen's arrest, you lucky son of a bitch."

Lucas steps back, beginning to fade from the dream. Zak still gets to be the hero, still gets some resolution - the energy drain is fading from the dream.
Its not over - this is always a hard question, but at least now there's another option. Hopefully it'll make it easier next time.
