2AM this morning
It was a good thing he was in the hospital, because if Sebastian had another cup of coffee he was sure he was going to end up vibrating into bloody atoms and start walking through walls and just---dissolve into a different universe.

Okay, okay that was an exaggeration, but with every crash came insane ideas, and now that he was at the height of his fourth---fifth, fifth? Was it fifth? Okay, whatever number it was, Sebastian was attempting to control himself and his shaking limbs.

This was bloody ridiculous. He shouldn't have to wait until two in the morning to speak to his wife. Mackenzie wasn't the only one that had been doing the avoiding, Sebastian was quite sure they hadn't said more than ten words to each other since he got the ministry tattoo, but he'd made the attempt now, right? That had to mean something, right? No healer in their right mind would ever work such long hours unless they--they didn't need the money, Mackenzie was already a resident so it wasn't like she needed the experience, so it was obvious that she was avoiding him and he couldn't think and wow did they put a lot of cinnamon in this cup.

The clicking of heels made his head snap quickly, and Sebastian groaned, hand going up. You can't pull something just turning, right? He managed a grin at his wife and attempted to ignore the fact that they both looked like they didn't want to be there.

She felt wrong for thinking this, but Mackenzie had seriously been hoping Sebastian would be asleep, or not in the lounge at all once she had finished her shift. That was horrible, wasn't it? She didn't even want to talk to her husband, there was no doubt about that now and... she pulled her lips back painfully, refusing to finish the thought. She was tired, it was late. Her mind was in no state to make any brash decisions concerning the status of her and Sebastian's marriage yet. Doing that would include actual communication.

Which was going to happen, because as soon as Mackenzie turned the corner, she saw Sebastian sitting in the waiting room, smiling away. The sight almost made her want to vomit. Not in the way that he repulsed her, but simply because there was no more avoiding at this point, and that thought alone made her feel sick to her stomach. She had been feeling sick for a while now, no doubt because of all of this, which didn't surprise her. Dealing with stress had never been one of her strong suits.

"I'm sorry you had to wait this long," Mackenzie started softly, focusing down at the ground. While she did feel bad that he had been waiting here for a while, her sympathy only went so far. Apparently, he had been telling every healer that had walked by who he was, and what he was waiting for. It didn't take long for every single person she knew telling her where Sebastian was, and asking if she wanted them to take her shift.

He shook his head, face scrunching as he tried to focus his energy into the meeting he'd been waiting all day for. Waiting all day for. And--you know, at least she was busy having kids throw up on her and all that nonsense, because if Mackenzie had just been sitting around doing nothing and avoiding him, that would make this situation a whole lot more annoying. Of course, the fact that his wife was avoiding him was quite annoying on its own, but at least he knew she was actually being productive.

See----he could find a reason to forgive her for anything. That was the problem, and that was why they were in this mess. Sebastian had dealt with Mackenzie continue to mingle with the crowd that wanted him dead (literally, dead) and he'd just excused it with 'well, her family did disown her for you.' Which of course, he'd never be able to make up to her, but did that give her a reason to---he didn't even know anymore. He didn't know why he was mad, he didn't know why she needed to avoid him and that made him feel bad, and it was just---she was his wife. He needed her, and if he had to---ugh, bloody Gryffindor pride---

"I miss you," he finally let out, figuring that if there was going to be a chance to fix this, he couldn't deny that--through everything, even if he was annoyed to all hell with her neutral tactics, he still cared. Sebastian was looking up at her with a twist of his lips, letting out a breath through his nose.

Her face twisted for a few seconds, and Mackenzie's heart gave a familiar pang of desire. Her arms fell from the locked position across her chest, and her eyes widened. This was not what she had been expecting. Or at least--- yes, hoping for, but after all this time a conversation like this seemed to be less and less achievable. It wasn't necessarily like them to talk about something as important as this at such a strange time; in a hospital, at two o'clock in the morning, weeks afterward. But, they never had been that normal anyway.

He missed her. That was all she really needed to hear; the rest of it didn't matter. Because right now, she was very tired from avoiding Sebastian and wanted nothing more than just to get over this horrible bump in their relationship. No doubt it would come up again (oh, please not), but for now, Mackenzie was completely content with letting it go. She needed him, it was as simple as that.

Because she did miss him too. Too much, it was incredibly hard going through the day without her husband to begin with, and the past few weeks had been more miserable than in her entire life. Mackenzie wanted nothing more than to peacefully sigh, and be them again. The Goldsteins.

Finally, a small smile broke out onto her face, and her shoulders sagged. "I miss you too," Mackenzie stated quietly, taking a few steps closer to Sebastian. The thought of saying more came to her, but it suddenly seemed pointless.

"Oh, thank God," he let out without a second thought, pushing himself up and to his feet. Sebastian let out a shaky breath, hopefully from the caffeine. His cheeks hurt from smiling his first actual smile in literally weeks, and Sebastian ran a hand through his hair, causing it to stand up on end. He must look like an absolute nut job that escaped Ward 49, with his wide eyes and wrinkled clothes and...having sat around in a waiting room for hours upon hours.

At least he knew some of the people around here, and listening to the stories of what was going back and forth. Babies. Lots and lots of babies. Which made sense because he was in the pediatrics' waiting room, but still. Not just women having babies. Sick babies. Loud babies. Babies who didn't seem to know what personal space was and decided to sit under his chair.

It had been a very long day.

"So---" he jerked his thumb over his shoulder, even though technically it was pointing to the wall, "Would you be okay with finding like---a twenty-four hour grocery store or...or something so I get a brownie? We could get food?" Sebastian let out a loud laugh at himself, "Because---because I'm rather hyped up on coffee and need something solid in my stomach before I throw up, and you worked through lunch and I would've gotten you something but---I got caught up coloring."

Another laugh as he bent and picked up an ABC coloring book, flipping through the completely finished pages, A to Z.

He colored an entire coloring book, and had eaten nothing all day for her. From the realization of that, the cumulative day/night's mental exhaustion and the emotional release that everything was going to get back to normal, Mackenzie couldn't help but let her eyes water. Actually, she wasn't even able to stop herself from crying. Her mouth formed into a strange smile as the tears freely began to run down her face.

"Brownies sound wonderful," Mackenzie said as one hand reached for the book, and the other moved to cover her stomach. Now that she didn't feel completely miserable, her appetite raged back to life: she was fairly certain she could eat enough for two stomachs.

"Or anything," she sighed, dropping the coloring book into her purse. This was good, this was beyond good, it was how things were suppose to be, and now everything could go back to normal and they could deal with the crazy things that life threw at them together. Wiping her face quickly, Mackenzie sent Sebastian a small smile before wrapping her arm around his. "Let's go."
