Allison was in the kitchen keeping herself busy with preparing things for dinner.  Of course she could be using magic to peel the potatoes and be doing more than just one thing at a time.  But it took longer this way and kept her mind from wandering to topics she  was trying to avoid thinking about.  Not that she was trying to avoid her husband, because she wasn't.  It was just she didn't get it.  Yes the laws were stupid and wrong, but was that really a reason to just stop living the life you had been living for years.  It made her feel like a bad wife that she wasn't being more supportive to him, more understanding but it hurt when he said he wished he'd just stayed muggle.  Ally couldn't help but take it personally, it was who she was.

"Shit!" she cursed as she cut her finger with the potato cutter, throwing it into the sink.  "And this is why I don't like doing things the muggle way" she muttered under her breath as she set the peeler to peel the potatoes itself and rinsed off her wound.

Well, didn't he just have perfect timing.

Sam was about 99% sure that he hadn't been intended to hear his wife's words, but there he was, having just walked into the kitchen unnoticed and straight into a wall of guilt. His mouth, which had been open to greet Ally, moved into a thin line, and even the normally talkative Roger fell silent in his father's arms.

The frustrating thing was, Sam knew he shouldn't be guilty at all about this. He shouldn't feel guilty about getting out of a world that thought he was a second class citizen because his parents hadn't been a part of it before him. He shouldn't feel guilty about doing something to make himself happy--but he did. Every time he looked at Ally and saw all of the words that she was very barely holding back around him, he felt fucking terrible. He knew that his wife associated his blowing off the magical world with blowing off her, and even though that was the furthest thing from the truth---even though it frustrated him so bloody much that she thought that--it made him feel like he was in the wrong.

Bloody hell, this shouldn't be such a difficult thing.

Sam watched Ally's back as she nursed her cut, then cleared his throat and finally spoke up. "You have a wand, you know," he offered quietly.

Ally startled slightly when she heard Sam behind her. "Oh I've always have been horrible at healing spells." she said waving him off hoping that he was referring to her healing her wound and not the comment she had just made. It really wasn't something he needed right now. Ally herself didn't need it either. She was doing very well at keeping her frustrations at bay.

"Hello Roger, did you have fun with daddy today?" She said kissing his forehead. Ally had the feeling that Sam was going to corner her soon enough, she never lasted very long at hiding how she was really from him. But hopefully the fact that Roger was around would hold that off a little longer.

Sam knew what his wife was doing, and he was inclined to just let her keep doing it. He was an extremely non-confrontational person by nature, and of all the people in the world that he could get into an argument with, Ally was on the very bottom of that list. But Sam steeled himself--he wasn't going to let her avoid this. They needed to talk about this, no matter how explosive he feared it could get.

Roger wiggled around in his arms and he let the boy down to explore the kitchen on his own. The one-year-old toddled off shakily to open his favorite cabinet and began to pull out the silverware they kept there for him. Sam watched his son bang the metal pieces on the floor for a long moment before turning his gaze back to Ally. "You can use your wand to peel potatos, Ally," he said. His voice was serious, free of the lighthearted tone it usually held. "You're a witch, no one's forcing you to be anything different."

"I know that." Ally said still watching her son bang the silverware around. "See potatoes are peeling themselves. I just didn't feel like doing that way earlier. I mean, with you being all anti wizard now it makes things awkward." she said sounding a bit more harsh than she meant to.

Ally sighed, "Sam, this is so pointless. I'm a witch and you are a wizard. And we shouldn't be letting this stupid stupid law get in the way of our happiness."

She was like a bloody venus flytrap, his wife was. She drew him into a false sense of security with a calm excuse and then suddenly moved in for the kill. Sam couldn't help but let his surprise show, but it quickly faded back into his previous serious expression--listening to her words over again in his head, it wasn't hard. This was going to be a hell of a night, he could tell right now.

"I'm not being anti-wizard," he replied in a tightly controlled tone. "Don't try to blow this out of proportion like that, that's not fair. I'm being anti-pureblood supremacists who have apparently taken over the Ministry and want to make life harder for Muggleborns that it already was."

Sam's arms came up to cross in front of his chest. "The next time you're told you're not allowed to hold a job because of your blood status and have to get a mark on your hand to show the world know that you're different from everyone else, you can come back and tell me that a stupid law shouldn't get in the way of your happiness." He scoffed, although not at her. He couldn't help it. "But that won't happen to you. You won't ever know what that feels like."

Ally's mouth dropped open at the last part of his statement. It was like a slap in the face. It took her a second before she could compose herself enough to speak. "You're absolutely right. I'll just never be able to understand." She copied his stance and fixed her gaze on the floor. She couldn't think of anything else to say because he was right. She couldn't understand.

Uh.. okay.

Once again, Ally surprised him, but this time by not getting angry. He had felt bad about his words even before they had finished coming out of his mouth, and he had been sure that she would get defensive. Hell, he would have. But no, she just--she conceded and stood there, as upset as she had been since he had started with this whole new job business.

Ugh, and there was no better way to make him feel like shit than that.

With a sigh, Sam pushed himself forward and gathered his wife into a hug, resting his chin on crown of her head. "I'm sorry," he muttered. "I---I'm not doing this to upset you or because I resent you, even the wizarding world itself, in general. But I can't live like a second class citizen and just bend to their will, and if that means I have to give up magic and stop venturing into that world---well, then that's what I'm going to do."

He took a step back and his hands went to her shoulders, squeezing lightly. "I am a wizard. I'll always be a wizard, no matter what they say or do to try and take that away. But I was a Muggle first, and right now I need to be a Muggle again. That doesn't make me any less the man you married. And just because you choose to stay a witch doesn't make me love you any less, either."
