[WHO?] Madeline Chamberlain and Matthew Brocklehurst
[WHERE?] The Brocklehurst/Chamberlain home in Southampton
[WHEN?] Shortly after Matt gets his tattoo and goes to Mungo's. [slightly backdated]
[RATING?] R. For fighting, swearing and almost sex and breast exposure.
[WHY?] Matt lost his job.

Matthew had walked for a few miles before he had decided to apparate home. His journal was tucked in his satchel. He flexed his hand subconsciously. This hurt like a bitch. He sighed deeply. He had to get home Maddie was probably worrying about him. He stepped into a dark alley. After closely looking around the alley to make sure no one was there a loud crack was made and he was in Southampton.

He waled up to his house, not wanting to go in just in case Maddie hadn't finished. He unlocked the front door and walked in, "Maddie? Are they gone?" Please let those goddamn dolls be turned. He hated the way they looked at him. Murder was in their eyes. He knew it was a weird phobia and knew they meant a lot to Maddie but god damnit, they were creepy. "Do you have the lotion?" He sounded slightly whiny and walked into their bedroom.

Rush wasn't the word. Her stomach was so upset, she walked quickly and ended up throwing up in the sink. Ugh, what a horrible feeling and taste! Dinner was good, but not that good that she had any inclinations on tasting it again. The last thing on her mind was pregnancy, mainly because she didn't want to believe it was true. Their home wasn't right for a damn baby right now. After washing her face and brushing her teeth, she looked in the mirror and sighed heavily. Please, just let it be the stomach flu, she prayed softly.

Going back into the bedroom, she looked at him. "Where did you go?" Then her eyes met the bag, and she got mad all over again. "Oh, god. No. Don't tell me you fucking bought a damn test." Years of being with him and living with him had taught her one thing -- never be sick in front of him. The damn healer in him always had him worrying.

"Yes, Maddie. It's a test. I'll do it magically too. Just to be sure. Please do this for me? We need to know. The throwing up like that for you isn't normal. I know you throw up occasionally but this isn't ordinary. There was nothing odd in dinner tonight. It was just leftover fish chowder." He tried to use his green eyes on her. "Please?"

The healer in him was ready to go professional on her if he had to but he wanted this to be Matthew Brocklehurst not Healer Brocklehurst. Though he was no longer a healer and he shook his head clearing his thoughts and going back to Madeline. "It won't hurt you and it'll shut me up."

Letting out a frustrated growl, she turned away from him. He was right, dammit, but she didn't want to admit it. Her pride and ego wouldn't let her. Instead she stood there, robe half open and arms over her chest, pouting like a five year old. At least if she was pregnant, she could get along just fine with her child. "Maybe it's all this damn fighting we're doing lately. Ever think of that? Fighting doesn't go well with damn fish chowder." But of course that wasn't it. She'd been suspecting for a few weeks now that she was pregnant, but wasn't ready to admit it.

With one more growl, she turned and grabbed the bag. "Gimme the damn test. I'll piss on the stick myself." Going into the bathroom, she slammed the door and stood there for a moment, thinking and gathering herself before she actually pissed on the test. Great, now she had to wait for an actual result which wouldn't be a result because they were never accurate.

Matt began to pace around the bedroom. He had completely forgotten his shirt was open and went to rub his collar and got bare neck. Screw it, he thought. He wasn't going anywhere else tonight. Butterflies formed in his stomach as he tore off his work shirt. He sat down on the bed and got up again. He did this two more times before he took his shoes. This was going to be the longest three minutes of his life.

If she was he wasn't going to cry, he wasn't going to yell, he wasn't going to scream. He was going to let her sleep in the bed alone for the night and sleep in the spare room and probably owl Mark almost immediately. Oh Jesus Christ. He felt like throwing up.

In those three minutes of sitting on the bathroom floor, she thought a lot about life and where it was going. Well, she knew where it was going now, there was no stopping it. The test was in her left hand and her right against her cheek. This couldn't happen; they didn't want kids, they had already talked about this before. That was why they had none already. It wasn't that she'd make a horrible mother, it was just she didn't want to be one. She grew up with boys for christ's sake. She didn't know the first thing about motherhood, other than 'don't let your kids eat mud'.

She sighed, looking down at the test. Oh.. great. Positive. Fucking positive. God, she wanted it to be a damn false positive. Pushing herself up from the floor, she opened the door and flung the stick at him. "I hope you're happy," she said, her voice breaking as she started to cry. "Now I'm fucking pregnant and most miserable about it." Most women were happy, not Maddie. She stood at the door, her hand in her hair. "This household is already fucked up. How in the hell can we bring a child into this mess?"

"I don't know. I didn't fucking want one either Maddie. I don't want our child growing up in a house where I'm thrown out every other day because I run my mouth." He sighed, "Let me do this test magically alright? Make sure it's not a false positive." Oh God, he prayed, let it be a false positive. He looked up at the ceiling for a moment and refused to look at her as he cast the spell. Blue would mean positive. The light began to shine a bright blue and he peeked. "Sonofabitch. What are we going to do?" He tugged at his own hair.

Once more that night she wanted to scream, throw things and just all out cry like a little girl. Her hand went to her mouth to cover up any sounds she was emitting that weren't swears. "Oh, god, Matt. What are we going to do?" They were having a baby, there was no denying that any longer. Walking over to the bed, she sat down on the edge, crying softly. "I don't know how to be a mother. Hell, I don't even know how to be a goddamn lady." This was wrong, this was bad and this... was a horrible mistake. Now he was surely going to make her marry him. Well, at least they'd have to learn to stop fighting and just have sex the good ol' fashioned way.

"I don't know. At least I have the savings. I guess it'll be going to the baby and the mortgage. I just hope we pay it off soon." He just wanted to curl up into a ball and just not think about it. Instead he walked over to her and gathered her up into his arms. "I'm not even going to ask right now," he said softly. "Maybe later but not right now. Think about it seriously. This will be the only time I'll ask you during the pregnancy." He stroked her hair softly. "We'll figure it out. I promise. We always do."

She shook her head. "You know my answer," she said, though it was muffled into his shirt as she cried some more. The tears just wouldn't stop. Her arms went around him as she sighed softly. "Oh, Matt. This isn't like you losing your job or the stupid Ministry. This is an actual baby. A real baby. Someone else we're going to have to look after like responsible adults. How can we figure this out? There's nothing to figure out!" This wasn't like any problem they've had before, where they could ignore it, hoping it wasn't real. It wouldn't work anymore. Someone else was going to be in their family, someone that would rely on them for everything.

"Just trust me alright? Please?" He held her to him and sighed and held her a little more tightly. "I'm not sleeping in here tonight. I just can't do it." He looked at the broken doll and the floor and it pained him to do so but he murmured "Reparo. Accio Doll." A completely fixed doll and he handed it to her. "I'm sorry I flipped out about the dolls. I just think it'll be better for us to sleep in separate beds tonight." He sighed and tried not to think about what would happen in nine months.

Like sleeping apart would make any difference, she thought to herself. He probably wanted to sleep in another bed because she was already get fat and ugly. More than likely he was regretting everything. What was the point? Pulling away from him completely, she wiped her face and sniffled, taking the doll from him. "Oh, get the fuck out of here, then. Go sleep somewhere else because you can't be man enough to sleep with me tonight." If anything, she wasn't going to let him back in anytime soon. He brought this onto himself, and even though it pained her to say so, it was true. The doll was more trustworthy than he was. No wonder she didn't want to marry him.

He walked out and did the walk of shame. He'd talk her out of the ban another night. Tonight he felt he deserved it. He just completely let the comments about his manhood roll off of him. She probably wanted another fight but she wasn't going to get it. He walked into the guest bedroom and grabbed his journal out of his satchel and thought about what to write.

The last thing she wanted was another fight. If anything, she wanted him, the big asshole that he was. Forcing herself not to cry anymore, she undressed completely and got into the bed, finding that cuddling the doll was just as good as him. Except it didn't help. It was no use. Shit was falling apart. Soon, he'd leave and she'd be left all alone to raise a stupid baby. Left with that thought, she found it very difficult to fall asleep that night. Most of it was spent crying softly to herself, the other part of it was spent dozing or sitting by the window.
