Who: Dimitri Thomas and Gabrielle Thomas
What: ~Revelations~ aka Dimitri tells the truth
Where: Their house
When: The...other...day >>; Apparently the Thomases like to take their time with things :D
He sucked, he was horrible, he was the biggest asshole in the entire world. No! No, no he wasn't. He was doing all of this to protect his family, he was doing this to protect his friends, he was doing this to stay alive and---Dimitri stopped pacing outside the front door of the house and he sigh deeply moving to go sit on the swinging bench he'd put up (yes, and made, he was quite crafty). No one got it. It was nearly a year since his abduction, and the nightmares hadn't stopped, the paranoia hadn't disappeared, and every once in a while, just when he was feeling like things were looking up, he'd get a letter.
Never really said much, not really. Morbid one liners, mostly. Some asked about his partner Jack, or how is family was dealing with their loss. Sometimes they asked if he'd punished himself thoroughly enough.
Dimitri slumped against the back of the bench, looking incredibly sullen. Yes. The strain all of this secrecy had put on him was definitely the punishment he deserved, and he pushed his elbows into his thighs, face in his hands. Gabby was going to leave him, he was sure. He'd never meet his son or daughter, and his life would basically be over. Sam was pissed at him, so he didn't even have his best mate to run to and...it was all his bloody fault.
If he hadn't been so slow---
His head shot up at the sound of the front door opening, and Dimitri smiled gently at Gabrielle. It was true what they said about pregnant women; she'd been glowing since they'd found out. He shifted over on the bench to give her room, smiling sadly. He was going to miss her so bloody much when she left him.
Gabrielle had been trying to focus her attention on the papers in front of her, but her mind kept on drifting off to a million different places. Mostly she kept thinking about baby stuff. Yeah, it was really really early to start thinking about cribs, and paint colors, and what kind of big stuffed animals she was going to buy him or her, but she couldn’t help it! She wanted everything to be perfect, and Gabrielle was very very organized. She liked to plan ahead, she liked to make lists. It was hard for her to not drag her husband into all of her planning, since she knew he probably had other things on his mind, but…they were having a baby!
Biting at the end of her pen, she bounced her foot up and down, glancing out the window. It was so beautiful outside, but it was breezy, so if she tried to grade out there everything would just blow away. But, she could always just…get up and take a break, right? Right. So, that’s what she was going to do.
Putting down her pen, she rose up to her feet and raised her arms above her head, stretching with a quiet groan before grabbing her mug of tea that she had been sipping at. It was cold by now, but that didn’t matter. Moving towards the front door, she opened it and stepped outside, giving Dimitri a grin as she shut the door behind her, taking her spot beside him at the bench. “I was bored.” She pouted slightly, leaning over to give him a kiss, pulling back with furrowed brows when she realized that he looked a bit off. “What’s wrong? Something happen at work?” Her body turned towards him, her mug held in both hands as she rested her elbow on the back of the bench, taking a small sip of her lukewarm tea as she waited for him to respond.
Dimitri puffed his cheeks; this couldn't wait any longer. He'd already taken it too far, he already had Sam mad at him (do you know what that was? Having Sam Davies of all people, angry at you? It just didn't settle in his head), and if he wanted any chance of Gabrielle not running away from him like he was some insane person, he...
"Babe," he started, twisting toward her. "Do you believe in...like, do you believe that there's things out there like...like aliens, and angels, and---wizards, and witches?"
He had no idea if this approach was going to get him anywhere, but he had to try. What would he do if she went on a rant about hating all of these paranormal ideas? Not that Dimitri thought she would, but who knew; maybe God was annoyed with him and would suddenly make Gabrielle completely irrational and crazy (oh, fuck, hormones--) and forbid any kind of talk of those subject in the house.
Which would help his case, seeing as she simply didn't allow him to discuss magic. No! No, Dimitri, you have to tell her.
She gave her husband an odd look, her eyebrows rising with surprise. It wasn’t until a few moments later that she realized she was looking at him like this, and when she finally did, she blinked and raised a hand up to tuck some hair behind her ear. “Uh…I guess so, I mean…anything is possible, right?” Her shoulders were brought up into a shrug, turning around to place her mug down on the small table that was beside the bench, clearing both of her hands.
“That’s what you’ve been out here thinking about? Witches and wizards?” She couldn’t help but smirk at this, finding it kind of adorable that he was so deep in thought about something so silly. It seemed like a question that one of her students would ask her, or something. “Why, did you see a U.F.O. or something? I’m not making fun or anything, I just don’t get what made you ask.”
It was a better answer than he'd been expecting. Of course, he'd been expecting her head to pop off and start shrieking about demon creatures and all that but---no, it was just his paranoia getting to him. Gabrielle was a loving, understanding person. If anyone could deal with this, then she could. He just had to tell her.
"I---I haven't been completely honest with you," he started, pushing up gently from the bench and avoiding looking at her. Dimitri felt like such a coward, but it was the only way he was going to get through this. "And---it's not, it's not a bad thing, I don't--I don't think, but...you...might not be...happy."
He winced and turned back to her. What could he do to prove that he really was a wizard and wasn't crazy? The thought of apparating to the end of the driveway passed his mind, but Dimitri reckoned that the shock wouldn't be good for the baby. The baby. The thought of his child gave him the courage, and Dimitri stepped forward, taking the mug off the table.
"I'm a wizard. Not the---the bullshit kind that draw circles in the dirt," Dimitri laughed lightly, remembering a magic show he'd taken her to when they first started dating. "I mean in the---casting spells, riding broomsticks, and...yeah okay, we wear pointy hats sometimes, but--" he put a finger out, unsure why his confidence was building, "but it's the style, it's not---supposed to be scary."
He stared and before he could start rambling on about quidditch, he pulled his wand out of the disillusioned holster on his side, "Just---watch."
Dimitri tapped his wand to the rim of the mug, and the tea swirled up and out, levitating its way into a liquid ball hovering over the mug. He moved and sat back down beside Gabrielle and left the ball of tea floating above their heads.
"I'm a wizard, Gabby, I can do magic."
Gab could feel something inside of her shift when he first spoke. I haven't been completely honest with you. That was something she didn’t want to hear, because immediately her mind went to something horrible. Of course, the scenario that had immediately played out in her head of what he hadn’t been honest about was so far fetched, because he wouldn’t ever be unfaithful or anything. She knew Dimitri better than that, and he would never hurt his family. Besides, unless he cheated on her with an alien or a witch, than that couldn’t possibly be what he wanted to tell her. Was he one of those crazy people who thought that they had been taken into an alien spacecraft and had been probed and prodded?
No. That was just…that was so ridiculous, she’d laugh about that thought later on.
But he was being antsy and fidgety, and he thought she wouldn’t be happy about what he had to say even though it ‘wasn’t bad’. She wanted to speak up and tell him to just tell her already, because all the possibilities of what he could say were driving her crazy. But she didn’t have to.
“A w-…” she couldn’t even finish the word, because she was just staring at him like he had 5 heads. What was he talking about? Spells, and broomsticks, and pointy hats? She was tempted to stand up and place a hand on his forehead to see if he had a fever, or check if there was a big bump there, because he wouldn’t be saying any of this unless he was sick or hit his head very, very hard. And then he had a big stick that he seemed to have pulled out of no where, causing Gabrielle to cross her arms over her chest and sigh, raising her brows as she watched, waiting for something to happen.
And then it did. Holy crap it did. Her eyes got wide as her mouth opened, craning her neck to look at the ball of tea that was hovering above her. She could hear what he was saying, but because there was a big floating tea ball just inches from her head, she couldn’t find the words to respond. Her hand twitched at her side before it raised to cautiously prod at it, just to make sure it was real. And sure enough, her finger slid into the cool liquid sphere. It didn’t fall, and it retained it’s shape.
“Oh my God...!” Quickly pulling back her hand, she rose to her feet and backed away from the floating sphere. “You-…how did-…I need-…” she gestured wildly to the door before she pulled it open and stepped inside, moving into the kitchen to pour herself a glass of water.
She had to be dreaming. Things like floating tea balls don’t really happen…
"Gabby!"
Dimitri followed her into the house immediately, though when she entered the kitchen he stayed at the threshold. He didn't know how she was really reacting, besides shock, but he didn't exactly want to get stabbed or something with one of her large cooking knives. Fuck, fuck, there had to be some better way to have explained all of this, but--but it was how Dumbledore had introduced magic to him, when he'd first gotten his Hogwarts letter. Hell, hell.
"Gabrielle---" he started, taking a step toward her, but then faltering. What could he say? "I'm sorry! I would have told you, I wanted to tell you so bad, but--" Dimitri felt his chest give an uncomfortable throb, and he looked down at the tiles of the kitchen, "But there's a war going on, Gabrielle, there are good wizards and bad wizards fighting for control, trying---I'm a---good, wizard," he was reminded of the Wizard of Oz, and it gave him the odd image of floating around in a bubble, "They're trying to get rid of wizards like me and---I wanted to protect you, I wanted to protect you and our family and--"
He put his face in his hand, letting out a short, frustrated sound. Dimitri dropped his hands to look at his wife again, "I promise, there's nothing else to it, it's just---okay it's a big deal but---it's---I'm still." A weak smile formed, "I'm still your husband. I can just turn a porcupine into a pincushion."
Her back was to him as she grabbed a cup from the cabinet, her other hand reaching down to turn on the faucet. She quickly filled up the glass and turned off the water, taking a very large sip of water as he spoke, only to gulp down the rest of it when he continued on. She was completely finished with her drink when he got to how he just wanted to ‘protect his family’, but yet her mouth was still dry. Placing the cup down into the sink, her now free hands went to push back her hair, her palms pressing into her temples as she shook her head, closing her eyes.
“This can not be happening…” her words were quiet, and hardly audible. When he spoke again, her hands dropped down and she turned around to face him. “How can you say that like it’s not a big deal, Dimitri? You’re telling me that people are supposedly trying to kill you, because you’re a “good wizard”,” she used air quotes to emphasize how ridiculous it sounded, “and you’re at war with the “bad wizards”, and you can turn animals into furniture and I’m supposed to say what? What am I supposed to say to that, Dimitri, what am I supposed to do? Should I thank you for telling me, should I be happy that you finally came clean? I--…” she sighed heavily, raising her hands in a helpless manner before they dropped back down.
“I don’t know what to do, I really don’t. You told me you were a security guard. What else do I not know about you? What else have you been keeping from me to protect me? And why did you wait until now to tell me? Why did you wait until now?” Her hands went to her stomach to make her point. When she spoke, she was more upset than anything.
"I'm not saying it like---" He stopped, pressing his lips together. He had no right to try and defend himself, and even though he was rarely one to back down from proving that he was right, Dimitri knew that it wasn't going to help his situation at all. Taking a deep breath, he rubbed his eye as he tried to think of what to say.
"You don't have to think anything right now," he said after a minute or two of silence, dropping his hand to look straight at Gabrielle. She didn't. She deserved time to think, he would want time to think. No one could process that there was an entire world living right under their noses and they'd had no idea. "I hate having sprung this on you, I should never have not told you, but I am telling the God's honest truth when I say that I believed keeping you out of this war was the best thing for you and our family."
Dimitri looked down at his feet, "I'm a wizarding version of a police officer, and last year I was held hostage by the evil---the death eaters, they call themselves death eaters." His jaw tightened at the memories, and the fact that outside of the precinct and telling the aurors what had happened, Dimitri had never verbally told his story. "My partner was a veteran, his name was--Jack, Jack was a vet and he got us out, but I got hit was a hex that--it paralyzed my legs, and I couldn't move, but Jack healed me right away and held back the death eaters as I escaped. Jack---didn't, he didn't---and they--they death eaters, they---"
He crossed his arms over his chest, trying to calm his shaking breaths, but this was a lot harder than he'd ever imagined. Which was a lie, again, fucking hell it was as if he couldn't do anything but lie. Dimitri hadn't talked about his abduction because he was terrified, he hadn't told Gabrielle about magic because he was scared of her getting hurt, it was all one big fucking sign that pointed to him being a God damn coward.
"They've been sending me threats, telling me that I'm next, that I'm---that I should join them, because I'd be better off---it's fucking ridiculous, and you can---you can do what you want with that, Gabrielle, I wouldn't think any less of you for walking out the door right now but I will--" Dimitri sucked in a deep breath, "But I will--I am standing by what I believed, that this was to protect us, I still think it would've been for the best, but I couldn't live another day without you knowing, God forbid if---anything happened."
It was a very frustrating situation for both of them. While she was trying to be accepting of all of this, it was a lot to process in one sitting. Then again, she wasn’t really sure how he could have subtly broken it down for her. The only way to tell her that he was a wizard was to be pretty blunt about it, since she probably would have thought that he was being an idiot, making up such a silly story. So, she stood where she was, sucking in her bottom lip to chew at it gently, her hands fidgeting before she used them to reach behind her, to hold onto the counter. It was a good thing that she did, since her knees almost gave out as he told her even more about himself.
Her eyes were wide as he explained what had happened with his partner, her heart racing in her chest. God damn it, she probably would have just cried when she wasn’t pregnant, but before she could stop herself, after he finished talking, she burst into a set of sobs, her hand coming up to cover her mouth, her eyes shutting as she hung her head. Her hormones were already out of whack, and she was feeling everything 2 or 3 times stronger than she normally would have, so learning that her husband was almost murdered, and the only reason he was alive was because his partner basically sacrificed himself so he could escape, and then on top of that, the people who were trying to kill him were sending him death threats, was enough to make her burst into tears.
She was still able to hear him speak, even as she tried to catch her breath, the back of her hand moving to wipe at cheeks, hopelessly trying to dry them, even though fresh tears kept falling immediately afterwards. Bloodshot eyes rose up to look at Dimitri, sniffling a little bit before pushing away from the counter towards him, taking slow steps towards him at first, her pace getting quicker the closer she got, until she was close enough to fling her arms around his middle, her fingers gripping at his shirt as she pressed her face into his chest, shaking her head back and forth. “I don’t want to lose you…I can’t lose you, I-…” another sob came up from her throat and she just pulled herself closer, needing to be near him. Her head was so clouded, and there was just so much information to process, but right now she just needed him to hold her.
