Bertram Aubrey was not in fact reading his book, but neither had he sat down with the intention to ogle Anneliese (although that was a nice plus, he decided rather quickly). He was thinking about why exactly it bothered him so much that Franzy was at St. Mungo's, which obviously meant that he was getting too attached and that he should immediately distract himself.
Enter Anneliese. "I know it's hard to believe there's anything in this devestatingly handsome body that needs improvement, let alone my mind -- but I do occasionally pick up a book or two." Hopefully she wouldn't die from shock. He laughed and shook his head, setting the book down and taking the opportunity to leisurely look down her blouse -- she was leaning forward, which meant she was totally waiting for him to do it, right? Right.
"Besides, books are good for lots of things. I'm trying to figure out if this one will prop up the uneven foot on my bed -- my suitemates have been losing a lot of sleep with my headboard rattling like it is, you know. I'm just trying to be considerate." He put his thumb and forefinger around the spine of the book. "But I think this one's a smidgen too thin."
