Savannah didn’t know how that first ring had momentarily slipped her mind, seeing how it was that edible piece of jewelry that had changed her life forever. The ring she had been thinking about was embedded with beautiful sapphires, and had been left on a table in the foyer of their home, back when she was gathering the rest of her things to leave for good. Again, she tried to put all that behind her, still finding it hard to believe that he was able to make her feel her best and her worst. He really was her biggest weakness, though he knew that since she had told him as much.
Following him to the gazebo, she appreciated the sight opposed to the rather garish decorations that had been surrounding them as they passed by the shops. Following him inside, she tilted her head back as she gazed at the lights before he had her full attention, looking down at her hand as he slid the ring onto her finger. She swallowed thickly, memories flooding back to the last time she had worn any jewelry on that particular finger. She blinked, and then looked up at him as he repeated the same lines he had used to propose all those years ago. She couldn’t help but laugh, her other hand coming up to tuck some of her hair behind her ear.
“Yes, you were quite the wordsmith,” she said with a grin, though honestly at the time it was the most romantic thing she had ever heard. That was the first time he told her he loved her, and the first time she had said it back. She didn’t care that he had proposed with a candy ring, or that he had used a terrible line to ask her to marry him. She loved him more than she had ever loved anyone before.
As he stalled, Savannah’s expression mirrored her curiosity. He looked…nervous, and as he continued to talk, she felt her own heart pick up speed in her chest. She blinked as he strung together all the right words, saying all the things that she had waited so long to hear. And then he lowered himself down onto one knee, allowing her to see the new ring she was wearing. She gasped, her other hand lifting up to cover her mouth, a knot in her throat as her eyes began to bead up with moisture. He had completely caught her off guard, and she was feeling so many emotions at once. She swallowed thickly around the knot in her throat, dropping her hand away from her mouth, her head nodding.
“I will…” she answered, a tear streaming down her cheek before she let out a short laugh at herself, her other hand coming up to wipe it away. “Just…promise me we’ll do it right this time? Please promise me that?” She was practically pleading with him; she couldn’t just dive into things like last time. She wanted a ceremony, and she wanted to be surrounded by family and friends; whether or not they would show up to support their marriage after how their last one had ended, she wasn’t sure, but there was no denying that this man who was kneeling before her was the love of her life. She had known it for a long time, and that was what made everything else hurt as badly as it had.
