New Year's Eve Masquerade! For Tuesday

Octavius believed hiring someone to organise an event for him meant they would actually organise an event for him. Unfortunately, that notion proved to be a false one when the organiser left him high and dry in the middle of the month, but Octavius persevered. With the help of himself, Mira, occasionally Lottie Sweeting, and an army of lackeys, the night of the masquerade had come together as beautifully as possible.

Lottie had, for once, actually done her job, and at either entrance of the grand foyer were attendants handing out beautifully crafted half-masks to party-goers, and collecting them as people left. The ballroom was majestic and shimmering, the music was softly thrumming, the drinks were pouring, and the mood was infectious. All in all, Octavius thought, it was a satisfactory night to end a rather satisfactory year. After the chaos and excitement that had chased him all throughout 1983, he was rather happy to have had a (comparably) quiet year.

"Can you make sure Miss Warbeck is ready to begin?" he murmured to an attendant nearby who then scurried off. The Wizarding Wireless Network had, after all, promised a wonderful surprise at midnight! Octavius needed to ensure everything went perfectly.

The flash of a nearby photographer made Octavius scowl, annoyed was he at even the few press witches and wizards who had paid handsomely to be at the charity event tonight. The publicity was good, no one could deny that, and the masks concealed everyone's identity at least marginally so there was no grievous intrusion on privacy, but that didn't mean Octavius enjoyed their presence.

He rolled up the sleeve of his dress robe to check his watch, then his eyes darted back to the stage. It was five minutes to midnight! What, for heaven's sake, was Celestina Warbeck taking so long to appear onto an already dressed stage? Shaking his head agitatedly, Octavius cut through a path through the brightly coloured bodies in the mingling crowd to check on his star performer.

OOC Read this for questions, or ask me! Fluid time, so feel free to thread before/after kisses. Again, the "compulsion" to find your kissing partner kicks in 5-10 minutes before midnight and could be anything from thinking you should walk and get some punch to being mystifyingly sexually attracted to the masked stranger at your side. HAVE FUN! GO WILD ♥ AND HAPPY NEW YEAR'S MY GORGEOUS GALS.

Charlotte really had no idea what Octavius was fretting over. The night was going perfectly smoothly, and, no she hadn't forgotten about the masks that needed to be handed out at the door to every guest. Well, she did but that was a problem easily fixed and no one would ever know. Especially Mr. Pepper, who was on a right hot streak of being annoyingly on top of whatever Lottie was doing. Do your job, Ms. Sweeting. Why aren't you working Ms. Sweeting. I'm not paying you to do your nails Ms. Sweeting. Honestly, it was like he never took a break in his life.

Finally free of her duties for work (it was New Year's Eve, she was certainly not working til midnight) Lottie set out to find her date. She honestly expected to be bored of Adian at this point, as he could barely string a sentence together the first time they went out, but since then he had definitely been opening up a bit more. And she quite liked him when once he started opening up just a bit.

She had made sure to take note of which mask he was wearing to make it easier to track him down later, but it was definitely proving to be more difficult than she had expected now that she was surrounded by a sea of masked faces. She had just caught sight of what she was sure was Adian's dress robe when she got distracted by a maskless face. She did not spend 5 hours tracking down all these masks for them to be perched on top of ones head.

"Excuse me!" She started though her sharp words died on her lips when the wizard turned to face her. Oh. She had not seen that face in years. Not since he graduated and they had decided long distance just wasn't going to work with a Hogwarts student and an auror. After a moment she composed herself, propping a hand on her hip she tsked disappointedly. "Now now, Mr. Bexley. A lot of effort went into providing these masks for everyone and you are ruining the fun."

He frowned down at the woman behind the mask, "How do you know my name?"

Jake wasn't entirely sure why he was here. Well, no. Ollie was attending, and after their month long venture in search of his friend's abandoned child, it seemed like they both needed an evening that didn't involve intensive questioning of people who didn't speak English. He felt guilty for having come up empty, and...his empathy for Ollie had impressed his healer greatly. It was apparently a good thing that Jake had found himself caring about someone other than himself.

The woman behind the mask had flaming red hair, and his mind raced to recall a redhead that he knew. His memory had been jilted, but---Jake stepped closer, eyes narrowing as he tried to see beyond her mask.

"Charlotte?" he said, and to his own surprise he found the corners of his lips turning up. Charlotte Sweeting. They had dated in Hogwarts, ending their relationship because he was leaving and entering the auror program. Jake remembered feeling noble about the act, even though it pained him to think about. The older aurors had made it a point that relationships rarely lasted through training, and with how the war was raging...Jake recalled thinking that he was going to save Charlotte a lot of heartache.

"Charlotte Sweeting," Jake said, standing straighter. His mask remained on his forehead, as the constriction he felt with it on making him more uncomfortable than he'd like to be. The crowds and the loud noises were already giving him a migraine. "How are you?"

It had been her goal, since leaving the house for the party, to drive her husband absolutely out of his mind.

Maggie rolled her shoulders, sure that her low cut, shimmering dress and spaghetti thin straps were keeping Adrian's eyes right where she wanted them. It was rare of her to dress this way, to behave like this in public, but she'd worked hard over this past year to get her pre-pregnancy body back and while she would never look like she did before she became a mother, Maggie looked very, very good.

With quick moves and the slightest of teasing touches, she knew that Adrian was ready to drag her to the nearest corner (it wouldn't even need to be a dark one, at this point) and have his way with her. Maggie had whispered in quite the sultry tone that he would have to wait until midnight before he could put his hands on her. And to drive him even madder, she'd even taken to talking to all of her male friends in a loud, flirty manner, only to make her way back to Adrian and assuring him she was all his. Maggie hadn't had to play these sort of games in a while, but she most definitely had not forgotten how to win them.

She felt giddy as she flounced around the crowd, keeping just out of her husband's grasp. Maggie had been annoyed with the mask she had to wear while on the ballroom floor, but realized quickly that it added an element of surprise to their evening. Adrian was dressed just like most of the men in the room, so to find him and pounce was a game she had been playing all night. Maggie locked her eyes on her husband, who stood only a few feet away and made her way toward him. It was close to midnight, said the announcer, so it was now finally time to make her way back to Adrian. She closed the space between them, but then...but then...Maggie stopped, blinking behind her mask as she realized she did not want to kiss her husband at all.

Maggie made sharp turn, finding her true target standing idly a few feet away. Now that was who she wanted all over her.

Drystan didn't normally care for parties.

His friends and family could heartily attest to that fact. Under the best of circumstances, socialising bored and exhausted him. With the state of their house, the last thing he and his wife needed to be doing was attending a party, but, strangely, he could think of nothing else he would rather do.

Something, anything, to ensure that 1983 went away forever most likely had something to do with this change of heart.

He couldn't say he had been enjoying himself, necessarily, but there were worst things Drystan could have been doing. Such as taxes, or trying to explain to the crup why he couldn't come into Drystan's study and chew up his slippers after having rolled around in mud.

The sense that he was missing something, or had forgotten something, plagued him suddenly, and he was about to ask the person he was conversing with (who was it? He couldn't remember—surely his short-term memory was not so poor—) when he realised the person had left. Confused, he turned about to see if he had missed something.

And as he turned, he saw a witch in a red and gold mask sizing him up, and, naturally, appearing to like what she saw. His ego had never needed stroking, but open admiration didn't exactly put off a wizard like Drystan Fawcett. He had the brief impulse that she wasn't something that should interest him, but then he scoffed at himself. Why wouldn't he lay his sights on someone who found him attractive that he did as well?

After all, everyone knew he preferred blondes.

"Is staring all you're going to do?" he asked, smirking beneath his mask.

Estella felt pretty, she felt drunk, and she felt like next year was going to be their best year yet! Caden's parents had happily taken the children for the night, promising lots of snacks, sugar, and midnight madness. Estella wasn't sure if her in-laws' house would be standing by the next morning, but at this moment she could not care less about it! She was pretty and drunk! It was a great evening!

She giggled into her hand, unsure of the last time she had been this tipsy. She really could not remember, as she usually avoided alcohol because one drink made her wobbly. As a health nut and someone who needed to keep a certain figure, Estella had a strict, strict diet which did not include alcohol. But it was New Years! New Years! It was New Years and she was wearing a pretty dress and she was drunk!

A warm feeling came over her as she adjusted the mask on her face, like a silk curtain dropping over her shoulders. She turned toward the man standing beside her, the one she'd just been having a lovely conversation about her dance studio with---apparently he had a young daughter too? Estella grinned, her hand running up his chest.

"You are not my husband," she purred, pushing up on her tiptoes.

West too could not recall the last time he'd had this much to drink -- in public, at least. He and Griff had their share of beers when the children were in bed, of course, but that was an entirely different matter than this New Year's Eve ball. It had been more of an insistence from his agent than anything that had brought him out to this thing -- you haven't been feeding your image, they'd tried to tell him.

As if he cared anything about his image any more. If they weren't going to fire him over being a bloody pouf, he was quite certain he'd have to lose an arm or a leg permanently to be kicked off his team now. He placed a hand on the back of Estella's neck to toy with her hair, his lips twitching into a charming smirk.

"And you're not mine, kitten." And yet he was still feeling very much drawn to her, to the rhinestones on her mask. He brought a fingertip up to trace the curve where the mask met her cheek. "But that ... doesn't seem like such a problem."

Bertram had been certain that his party-going days had been over when he'd had another child come into his life -- and perhaps that hadn't been so bad, because now that he actually had the time to be at the New Year's party, he was yawning so badly that he was certain he was going to fall asleep before the ball dropped. Bianca hadn't been on board with the outfit that he'd chosen, but he insisted -- it was his favorite outfit, all right, and he rarely got to wear it now that they were 'stay at home stick-in-the-muds'. She'd relented, he was sure, only because he had been on the verge of making them late.

He touched Bianca's arm lightly and murmured into her ear that he needed a pick-me-up if he was going to survive the rest of the evening, walking over to the drink trolley and asking them to make him a double espresso. He glanced up at the clock, then back in the direction that Bianca had gone -- only to be distracted by a woman between his lovely woman and himself. She was someone, he was sure, that he knew -- but something about her drew him to her side. He downed the espresso quickly and walked over to the woman, placing his hand on the curve of her hip as if he were certain that it belonged there.

"I don't know how I missed you on the way in, beautiful."

This year was ending quite splendidly! She and Ralph had both settled into their respective careers and were the most loving, doting parents on the planet! Little baby princess Victoria was the prettiest, smartest, most wonderful child on the planet, and now she was going to have a little brother or sister to join her ranks! Miranda couldn't be happier about being pregnant again. She'd always talked about having a million little Ralph-babies, and here she was, well on her way!

It was just as exciting to be one of the WWN's stars helping with hosting duty. Miranda was interviewing guests and taking questions herself, it was really a lot of fun to be a name that people recognized! A voice, even! Some of the guests knew who she was right away even with her mask on, because they recognized her character's voice! It was so exciting! JUST SO EXCITING!

Her arm had been resting on Ralph's, listening in on a conversation he was having with a fellow masked party-goer, when she began to drift away. Her fingers slid down and grazed his hand before completely leaving his side, and she moved through the crowd, stopping to think...where was he? It felt like he'd been missing for ages. Miranda had been looking toward the stage when she felt the hand on her waist and she turned, a smile slowly spreading across her face.

"You've got me now," she said lowly, pushing forward to drape her arms around his neck, this masked stranger's neck...He was everything she'd ever wanted, who was that Ralph guy, anyway?

Miranda couldn't press her lips to his fast enough.

She...didn't know why she was here. The flyer had slipped out of the Prophet one morning and the blazing WWN symbol had caught her eye. Mattie had kept her distance from the wizarding world these past few years, but the invitation felt like some sort of sign. She'd finally put together some music that she thought could actually make it to the wireless, so maybe...maybe she'd be able to talk to someone here. Of course, her nerves got the best of her and she'd ended up standing awkwardly behind those she knew were part of the WWN team. At least it had let her catch wind that the Celestina Warbeck was going to perform at midnight, and at the moment it was really all that was keeping her there.

Mattie nursed her drink slowly, having held onto the same glass since she'd arrived. The masks were keeping her from recognizing any familiar faces, but it also helped her keep off to herself. Everyone seemed to be enjoying herself, and she smiled at a rather lively couple on the dance floor. Okay, okay, it was a nice evening. Her smile widened, a lovely feeling coming over her, and she turned around to find...to find...

She didn't have the chance to figure out what she'd gone looking for. A pair of strong arms wrapped around her waist and kissed her so hard that her knees buckled; thank Merlin she'd thrown her arms around his neck to pull him even tighter.

Flynn couldn't think of anything more depressing than going stag to a New Year's Eve party, but as per usual his friends had talked him into it. They told him he needed to mingle and that interacting with his cat didn't count as socializing. This helped put things into perspective, and he threw on a pair of dressrobes and went to try and interact with actual people.

He thought he had been doing a pretty good job, for the most part. Flynn was outgoing and didn't have trouble talking to people, he wasn't very good at making conversation. He just didn't know what to say, seeing how there weren't many people who, well...got him. He had been called 'weird' on a few occasions, but he always let it roll off his back. He was who he was.

Thinking that he would have just one more drink, and maybe manage to slip out just before midnight - you know, to avoid that embarrassing moment of being one of very few people in the crowd who didn't have anyone to kiss - Flynn made his way towards the bar. He placed his order, though suddenly his brows furrowed behind his mask and he turned to look over his shoulder, catching a glimpse of pink out the corner of his eye. Whoever was wearing the dress captured his attention, so much so that he walked away without his drink. He moved through the crowd, feeling this desperate need to get to her. He wasn't sure how many minutes were left until midnight, but the sight of this woman made him feel as though midnight were hours away. He couldn't wait, he needed to kiss her right then and there, and without thinking twice about it, he pulled her towards him, pressing a firm kiss to her lips. The scent of her perfume made his head spin in the best kind of way, and as he pulled away from her he blinked his eyes, trying to focus on the eyes that were peering back at him from behind her mask. His smile was crooked, but his arms hadn't left her waist.

"Is it bad luck to kiss before midnight?"

1983 had possibly been the best year for Drea Johnson. She'd turned herself around, been part of the Euro cup championship team, and worked her arse off through practice and training day in and day out. Her team had one the league, she was named named best seeker in the league, and her relationship with Tony was official and public.

On the cusp of a new year, Drea could feel nothing but excitement and joy; she couldn't wait to see what 1984 had in store! The evening had included loads of dancing (and a fair amount of sneaking away for a kiss or two), but when the time came close to midnight she departed from Tony for a quick glass of punch.

No one knew that Ethan had returned from his adventure in Norway. No one knew that he and Samantha had found what could be the discovery of the century. No one knew that the trolls of the Norwegian mountains had some ancient magic that worked in such mysterious ways that even dark magic was weakened against it. No one knew because---because they weren't exactly sure how to prove any of it.

The ancient method of transportation, a sort of rainbow-like floo network that worked through the caverns of Trolltindene, could be---revolutionary! But they'd barely escaped their captures and had no evidence but their stories. He had to remain under the radar of Gringotts because if they found out he was back with absolutely no treasure, not only would the Norway project be shut down, but Ethan would most likely be sacked as well. There were other things, but...but...he wasn't ready to reveal those, and he'd come for supplies, not to think about the exciting developments that...oh, hello---

Ethan had come to this party to find Larkin and try to enlist her in this adventure, but he caught sight of the most dazzling witch in the room. In all of England. He strode toward her, focused, completely losing any thoughts of Norway, of trolls and the like. She had her back to him (but what a backside!), and Ethan reached out both hands to place them firmly on her waist. Merlin, that felt good.

"Almost midnight," he whispered into her ear, leaning into her. Ethan grinned under his mask, hands gripping at the fabric of her dress.

Tonight, Penelope had vowed to put on a good face for her friends. Her brother swore she need not worry about Chester anymore, but the idea that he had been close to her for years without her knowing his true identity made her feel foolish and unsafe. In the last month, she'd been quiet and withdrawn, so much like her seventh year self, but New Year's Eve had always proven to be a time of change for her and there was no reason for this year to be different.

Only, she could find no friends to put on a good face for, and midnight was drawing steadily closer. There was no sign of Charlie anywhere, with whom she was supposed to ring in the new year, and the masks made it difficult to recognise her friends. Twice Penelope had stopped the wrong person hoping it had been Saoirse or Nona.

Then, there was someone right—there! Penelope had glimpsed him only for a moment, but she knew it was someone she was looking for. Was it Ollie? Her brows drew together beneath her mask as people kept darting in front of her and blocking him from view. No, Ollie was too tall. Perhaps it was the latest suitor on Arista's arm, what had his name been? But hadn't he been blonde? Yes, Penelope was certain he had been. Howell, perhaps? The shock of dark hair suggested it might be, but as she stepped closer to the man and he turned to face her, she knew it wasn't. How silly of her, not to realise it was who she had been seeking out this whole time.

"I've been looking everywhere for you," she said reverently, and reached up to pull his face down to hers.

What reason could anyone have for coming to a party with a date? Louis' luck had been tremendous, lately, as this was now the second time this year that he had been kissed by a woman behind a mask. Without saying much of anything this time, and under his own mask as well. Bloody hell, he was good. A low, satisfied hum escaped his throat; he hadn't known he'd wanted to kiss her so much until her lips pressed against his, and Louis' hand went into her hair to keep her firmly in place. It was the most satisfying kiss he'd had in a long time, and his arm wrapped around her waist.

It took a long of strength to pull away from such a perfect pair of lips, but he managed, only to remain hovering over her lips. The sounds of shrieks and hollers around the ballroom seemed to be far, far away, because all Louis could do was stare at the woman in his arms.

"I am glad you found me," he breathed, completely entranced. Louis found himself pushing forward to kiss her again, seemingly unable to keep his lips off of hers. Who was she? How could she have possibly have this sort of control over his every sense?

He pulled his hand from her hair, fingers playing with the wing of her butterfly-esque mask as he looked her over. Her eyes were such a lovely shade.

"Who are you?" he murmured before leaning forward to kiss her.

Rachel was not necessarily throwing the next best thing to a tantrum.

But she was not prepared to say she was not throwing the next best thing to a tantrum.

Her reasons why were murky even to herself. For the last two months, Rachel had been restless with no explanation, and no end in sight. She had a nagging feeling that she was forgetting something, as if it wasn't enough that she had already forgotten her entire life (twice) and then had to remember it in bits and pieces. Perhaps the stress of losing those three years was grated particularly heavily during the winter, as it had last year too. Something about the holidays made it so hard for her to settle.

So she had insisted on attending the WWN party before they left for their anniversary, and she insisted on wearing to it the latest from her favourite Parisian designer, which was to say very little at all. Rachel ignored her husband's protests, entrusted the children to their wildly capable house-elf, and set out to have—a night, the type of which she had yet to determine.

She held up the line of entry for three minutes as she forced the attendant handing out masks to go through 36 before choosing one she deemed acceptable, announced the champagne to be entirely too flat, and lectured the musicians on how not to butcher her favorite classical piece before feeling satisfied enough to enjoy the party, having been abandoned ages ago by her long-suffering husband.

When she tried to sit or stand in plain view of the stage to enjoy the almost-passable orchestra, Rachel kept finding herself behind a man with sandy hair and impossibly broad shoulders which impeded her view. Didn't people with sizeable features realise they had a responsibility to keep from infringing upon those who took up less space? Honestly, the nerve with which this man moved about inconsiderately.

"Excuse me."

She tapped him impatiently on the shoulder, ready to give him a piece of her mind.

"Excuse me!" she said insistently, and kissed him full on the lips.

This year was going to end, and it was going to end with a kiss, and it was going to fix everything that had gone wrong. Charlie was, at heart, an optimist, so while he was still struggling to deal with his injury and rehabilitation, it was nice to be out with his friends. Penny looked beautiful and he planned to enjoy the night as it was a rather important occasion for them, and he'd got to spend time with his teammates, who had had a bit of a rough year in their own rights.

He stood, nursing his drink as he watched the orchestra. It wasn't that Charlie really enjoyed this sort of music, but his slightly drunken and tired state had him entranced with how quickly the fingers of the musicians moved. Octavius really knew what he was doing, because if he could get Charlie of all people to sit through this classical performance, then he could get anyone to do anything. The thought of his friend captured Charlie's attention and he began to look around for Octavius, so it took a couple of pokes and prods to break his concentration.

"What," he said, the ringing of the bells in his ears causing his short-lived irritation to disappear. Charlie felt like he was seeing stars, and before he could see the culprit who had tapped him on the shoulder (rather hard, thanks), he was being kissed. Kissed. He knew he'd get a kiss or two tonight.

Her dress was a bit fluffier than he'd remembered it being, but maybe he hadn't gotten a good look at with his mask on. Her lips tasted different too, but amazing nonetheless. Charlie wrapped his arms around his snogging partner, wondering how he could've wasted any time watching the orchestra or tossing exploding gobstones into the drinks of the Falcons players when he could've been snogging her. Her, the most irresistible woman on the planet, the woman he'd never get enough of, the woman whose name escaped him.

He was certain this was not his girlfriend, Penelope. The certainty did not force the kiss to cease, however, and Charlie kept a strong hold on the woman, unwilling to part from her.

It was a good feeling, being so wrapped up in a person that you didn't know where you ended and they began. Iwan kissed her feverishly, as if this was the only thing he'd ever wanted in life. His hand went into her luscious hair and held her close, not wanting to part. Her hair was his favorite part, the fiery red locks of--of---

Iwan's eyes opened behind the mask, a jolt of a thought recalling that the woman he was currently snogging did not have red hair. This woman had dark brown hair, meaning that she was in fact not his girlfriend Marissa. Oy, Marissa would not like this one bit. He continued to kiss her, as his mind couldn't focus on doing much else for more than milliseconds at time, but the nagging voice in the back of his head caused him to loosen his grip.

"What's---your---name?" he said between kisses, his hands resting on her narrow waist. Maybe if she told him her name, he'd have a better sense as to why this felt so good and so wrong at the same time. "I'm---Iwan."

Right, right. Pleasantries should've been exchanged before the snogging began, how rude of him.

Names? He wanted names? How could this masked man mustachioed man be asking her something so trivial as her name In fact, how could be doing something as trivial as talking, when they were in the middle of doing something so much more delicious?

Her disbelief might also have stemmed from the fact that she couldn't really remember her name at the moment. But it would come to her. It was something that started with a capital letter, of course. And she was certain it had an 'A' in it. It might even have had two.

"Mmm, who knows," she said between kisses. Melania grabbed him by the collar and yanked him even closer, if such a thing was possible. "Who cares?"

As nice as kissing this—Iwan, had he said?—was, she could not deny that further ministrations of her were being impeded by the object concealing his face (just his, of course). "This is getting in the way—" she managed between peppering his neck with kisses, sliding her hand up from their low perch on his waist (and maybe taking a grab or stroke or pinch where it suited her) and up the nape of his neck to untie the strings of his mask.

BIANCA!!

2013-12-29 12:45 am UTC (link)
Screw work obligations, there were very important things going on in the loo, and if Octavius had a problem with her absence then Mira would all-too-happily shove her almost-prepared pregnancy potion in his face for a proper explanation as to why she had forgone all her party obligations to hide away in the girl's bathroom. At least Bianca was here, and had all too willingly hexed the door shut to ensure privacy during this tumultuous time. They had set up a work station of sorts at the sink, or at least, Bianca had while Mira miserably perched herself atop the head of the toilet and watched from afar.

Could she really be pregnant? Bianca seemed to believe so, or at least had very feverishly believed the possibility about an hour ago when Mira had told her that this stomach bug of hers was still persisting. A quick pop home for a potion, and back here they were, locked in one of the party's bathroom waiting for the potion to decide its answer. We just need to rule it out, Bianca had said, then it would be one less option!

She felt like she was going to be sick. Mira tipped her mask up so it covered her forehead instead of her eyes, and let out a chattery sigh. And what, exactly, was she going to tell Miles when she mysteriously reappeared after Merlin knew how long she had been gone? Her eyes widened at the next crawling thoughts of her concerning him, and Mira promptly buried her face into her hands.

It was not a few moments later that she heard what could only be described as sparks forming from thin air, and her head shot out of her hands to watch a beautiful display of gold flares jet out of the tip of the potion vial.

"Merlin's saggy left---" Mira immediately responded, covering her mouth with her own hands before she could finish her thought aloud. She was pregnant.

Bianca paced back and forth, eyes watching the vial behind the mask with sharp intent. Her best friend was pregnant, and while Bianca had been waiting for this moment ever since she became a mother (because obviously Aaron was going to grow up to be a prince and marry the princess that Mira was sure to give birth to), it was not supposed to happen in a public loo at a New Year's Eve party. The doors had indeed been shut, but knowing there were hundreds of people on the premise and that some would soon be banging on the door took away any intimacy they may have had.

It also didn't help that Bianca had no idea who the father of this child was, not---she assumed that Miles Lufkin was the culprit, but she had never imagined the flaky quidditch player would become such an important and permanent part of Mira's life. Did Bianca even want him to be? Of course---that was Mira's decision, but her best friend did not need a bloke who tended to disappear into the wind once the scent of another pretty girl wafted under his nose.

"I could punch him in the throat," Bianca seethed, just knowing that Lufkin was going to panic, that there was a good chance he'd flee---She stopped, crossing her arms over his chest. "Do you want me to preemptively beat some sense into him? Lufkin?"

She would. Part of her wished that there would be no father in the picture as thinking of Mira dealing with that sort of crap made Bianca's skin crawl with anger. She was sure---"What do you want to do?

Liz let out a breath, glad to be away from the crowd and the loud music as they ducked into an empty room. What kind of room had a wall of books? At least Remus would like that. Her obsession about coming to the party had caused her to forget how claustrophobic crowds made her these days, but she put on a brave face for her date, as she had literally dragged him through every step of the way to this night. Forcing Remus to RSVP, making him try on dress robes, buying him said dress robes, showering, shaving, combing his hair, dressing him, and then not letting go of his hand the entire night.

"I'm taking this dumb mask off," she said, sputtering as the feathers got caught on her lips. Liz tossed it away onto a side table, and dropped down to the couch, pulling Remus down with her.

She'd decided, these past few months, that she was going to keep Remus Lupin in her life. Liz had at first only attempted contact through owls and journal entries, but when it became evident that her former housemate was an expert at avoiding written means of communication, Liz had taken to banging on his door at random times of the day, as to not create a routine. He'd spent long enough hiding away from society, he didn't deserve to not have any sort of life. So she'd help, even if it was just lunch, or doing laundry together, or even just sitting around and reading. Liz didn't mind it, not in the slightest.

In all actuality, seeking out Remus had been just as much for her as it was for him. Maybe even more. Liz didn't even have the memories of the war to be depressed over, her life had been completely erased. Remus was...he was one of the only things she had left of the life she'd once known. Graeme was there, of course, but Liz's feelings for her friend had always been so complicated...and his wife didn't like her in the slightest, so it was hard to maintain a decent relationship. Remus had lost just as much as she had, and it felt like he was the only person in the world that could understand her need to escape. Maybe it was cruel of her to force herself into his life when she knew how needed the solace was, but maybe she was just a little selfish, too.

Liz sighed and kicked off her shoes, leaning back into the cushions of the couch. Her hand twisted Remus' around and she lifted it to knock his own mask up his forehead. "It hasn't been terrible, right?"

Being at this party, watching witches and wizards from his past interact and laugh without a care in the world, experiencing just how socially out of touch he had become over the years, it made Remus miss his friends. It made him feel sad that they were no longer here, and it made him feel even more pathetic that he, out of everyone, had been the one to survive the madness that was the war. How had that even been possible? It didn't make sense, when he, so easily, had much less to give back to the world than the likes of the Potters and the Longbottoms.

James would have loved an event like this. Masked personas in a glittering backdrop-- what a better setting for a bit of innocent mischief? Peter, true to form, would have scurried along nervously with them, feeling undoubtably a bit of instilled bravery within thanks to his masked face. And Sirius-- Remus' thoughts faltered. For a very long time, Remus had presumed to know Sirius Black very well, but when the dust of the war had settled... Remus shook that lingering thought, vehemently warding it away. There was nothing he could do for an Azkaban-tied traitor.

Liz Fortescue grabbed Remus from his nostalgic thoughts, her words pulling him back into visceral reality. They were no longer squished within the throngs of people, but quietly slipped away in what he could only assume was a library. A small hint of light filled Remus' eyes as they took in the shelves of books, but it was fleeting. There wouldn't be any kind of time for that. At the very least, this change in setting had knocked a bit of consciousness in his gaze, and Remus looked at Liz with unusual awareness.

He pressed on a pale smile for Liz. It was no secret how much she had wanted to be here tonight. In the end, he knew he could've have been able to say no, if anything owed to their friendship over the years. One of the few friendships he had left. "No," Remus lied, "not entirely terrible."

Remus also allowed Liz to pull his mask off, if only as a potential means to finally slip her hand from his. It had not gone unnoticed of Liz's absolute refusal to release him from her grasp tonight, and even despite his best efforts. Surely, he knew, she would not be clutching to him so keenly if she knew what he really was, and it was because of that that Remus continued in his attempts to relieve her hand of his. But Liz was determined, and he too unmotivated for whatever reasons, for there to be any real progress to be made concerning that issue. Out of muscle memory, he tugged at Liz's clutch with no success, hoping to feign a simple drop of the hand to his side this time.

"Is tonight turning out the way you hoped?" Not that he was at all helping. Remus immediately felt guilty at the prospect of Liz producing a response of 'No' in any form, because a bit of that would fall on him, wouldn't it? He, once again tonight, resolved to be a bit more responsive with her.

It was starting to get close to midnight, and Adian felt himself becoming concerned (yes, that was the word) about how exactly he was supposed to execute the most epic of New Year's Eve snogs if the intended recipient was nowhere to be found. Lottie had been running here and there all night, as was right, and for the most part swung around every once in a while to check in, but now... Adian fidgeted with his mask. Nowhere to be seen. He had even taken to standing awkwardly off toward the side of the dance floor, as if waiting for a bright neon sign from above to direct him toward his date, in hopes of catching a wave of Lottie's auburn hair, but no luck.

He flirted with the idea of taking his mask off and roaming for a bit, but after experiencing Lottie's deep displeasure over catching a couple with no masks on at all, Adian knew it would not be within his best interest for him to find her without it. That made things much more difficult, and so it was with a heavy sigh that he mustered his legs forward into the crowd. He would find her, he was sure of it--- it was meant to be! He had a plan, things were going to happen, build off of tonight, and...

As he thought to himself, Adian felt his heart begin to pump and his limbs jump to life. Yes! This was exactly what he should be doing, finding the right witch to kiss at midnight, and he would know her when he saw her because---

Adian looked up toward the ceiling as the first loud chime counting down to the new year rang through the room. It was happening already, and he hadn't found her! A sort of frenzied energy filled him, and with every gong Adian felt his heart and brain race faster and faster. He wasn't even sure what he was looking for anymore, just that he'd know what it was when he found it.

And what was--- whoa. Adian stopped dead in his tracks, gaze landing upon undoubtable who he had been looking for. A holy pure being had stepped before him, practically engulfed in unadulterated light, and all he could think about was that this had been what he'd been looking for--- her in white. It was as if singing had filled his ears and the crowd had parted just so he could gaze upon her.

Because she had obviously been searching for him too, it was without hesitation that Adian reached forward to hold the side of her face, and kiss her with a bit more vigor than he had any witch in a while.

Winnifred Llewellyn was no fan of New Year's Eve, a holiday she was certain was invented for the purpose of debauchery and nothing more. She was here only because it was someone's horrible idea of a date in her quickly diminishing revolving door of Pure-blooded escorts. The last year, she had been possessed by some malevolent force, no doubt an infectious product of the crass delinquency happening around her, into kissing someone in the Hit-wizarding department, and the stir that coupling had caused! The lovelorn glances and mooning by her desk rather than report on assignments grew so problematic that Winnie was forced to quit lest her sanity be at stake! Some men simply did not understand the right of a lady to say no.

In the end, leaving had been for the best. After she was nearly killed from the influenza, she was awoken with purpose and put her impeccable breeding to good use at an art gallery. Though she told all who inquired that she was much happier in a role that befit her station in life, Winnie would admit to no one that she quite often missed the unconventional role she had taken on in a fit of rebellion to spite her brother.

As she was currently tangled up in the arms of a strong, dashing wizard, having the daylights kissed out of her, Winnie thought she might, one day, perhaps, grow to like the banal idea of New Year's Eve after all. Winnie wasn't entirely sure how their lips had come to be pressed so divinely against one another's, but all she knew was that she had been looking for someone, whose name she couldn't recall at this moment, and had found them. Him. Someone. Someone perfect. Had Winnie ever been kissed like this in her life?

"We can get married in the winter," she mumbled against those perfectly formed lips, curling her fingers into the locks of the shockingly luscious hair at the nape of her future husband's neck. "I can wear something from the Spring collection."

Finally, Axe felt his thirst for fun, for adventure, beginning to pique again. He had had a difficult time last year, he knew this, and yet how withdrawn he had become surprised him. After he was ousted from being captain of the Magpies, he never cared for social gatherings or extended socialising, and probably never would, but there was something to be said for being right in the middle of people drinking too much and doing stupid things whilst he soberly egged them on from the side.

That, he was fully prepared to admit, he missed.

Some of the Kestrels and he had arrived together and had been stirring up trouble in their tried-and-true fashion from the moment they stepped through the fancy doors and descended the staircase, and getting progressively more bourré comme un coing as the night went on.

A year had seemed fair, he thought, a year to live his relatively quiet life, to not care about anything, but now felt like the natural passing of his perpetual ennui.

There was but one bâton dans les roues, and that was a certain blonde whom was unmistakable even masked and across the room.

They had traded glances of varying lengths throughout the night, when Axe suddenly decided he had had enough of debauchery, yet his thirst was somehow unquenched.

Rather than exit as he had come, where a horde of reporters and their infernal photographers waited, Axe crept out the back. He pried his mask off and leaned against the wall, surveying the well-manicured grounds of the castle… palace? Manor? Who knew what it was, or what to call it.

When he heard footsteps, however, he straightened up.

"Ma fleur," he drawled, pulling away from the wall. "Ma belle fleur." He knocked his fingers against the wall as he drew closer to her, "You have been most distracting tonight."

A smug smile appeared on her lips, and innocently Rose pulled her hands behind her back. Who, her? Why, that had been purely accidental. She had been having a perfectly enjoyable forced-fun night out with Thomas, and, if during it she had just so happened to sensualize whatever fleeting glances she shared with Axe, then... Rose pulled her mouth back, and ran her tongue along the bottom part of her lips.

Alright, she would admit it, but only because it seemed that she was having increasing difficulty control her thoughts and actions tonight; his attention pleased her. Just like his golden nest hair, and especially when he spoke french... there were a lot of surprising things that eternally pleased her about Axe Brookstanton. Not that she could tell him. He knew, already, she was sure, and there was no need to bolster his already plumbed feathers.

Rose's carefully crafted face and posture broke at this amusing thought, and all of the sudden she emitted the most amused of snorts at the mental image of Axe Brookstanton dressed-up like a plumb feathery bird. That was funny, she wished she could share that image with him---

It was fortunate that he had already pressed close to her, for Rose was unsure how trustworthy her legs had become. They felt a bit wobbly, at random times, so just to be safe (safety first!), she unceremoniously dropped her arms atop his shoulders and bumped her knees into each other for support. Her head docked back to look up at him (where was his mask?), and sucking in a deep breath of air, it was like she was preparing for the most momentous of responses.

It was, really.

"You have the most best-looking genes," Rose declared, head bobbling as she spoke. Rose watched Axe with heavy-lidded eyes through her mask, having, over time, completely forgotten it was even there. It wasn't as if she was exactly aware of her surroundings either, so being expected to remember something she couldn't see was ridiculous.

"Did you know that? You're distracting." She poked his chest pointedly.

Elphias had never been fond of dress robes or social affairs. In fact, he'd tried to sneak a small book into the party with him so he might find a corner to read by wand light, but Phoebe knew him too well. She'd taken away the book smuggled in amongst his robes' inner-pockets and threatened to banish him to the couch for the next month if he should try to summon one while at the party. After all, they were there to "relax" and what not. Elphias felt exact opposite of relaxed, though. He felt stuffy and misplaced, and--

"Are you hungry?" Elphias blurted as a sudden cramp gurgled in his stomach. He heard Phoebe say something, but he was already walking, feet carrying him toward a table of pastries. Apparently, he was much hungrier than he'd realized. Once he arrived, though, he just stared dumbly at the table, not quite sure which treat he wanted -- or if he really wanted them, after all.

Actually, Elphias was suddenly compelled to walk around the table to see someone speaking with a tall wizard with dark curly hair, whom he thought he remembered from school -- name escaping him, though he was sure he was supposed to know the wizard. The witch the wizard was talking, too, though, looked much more familiar.

"Anneliese?" he realized just before the clock began to strike midnight. Then things went a bit confusing because Elphias was tapping her on the shoulder and she was turning, and then there was kissing -- snogging, actually -- and though he knew this was not what he wanted, he couldn't make himself stop?

Though he felt stunned beyond belief when they pulled apart. Elphias blinked rapidly before stammering, "W-would you like to give that another go, then?"

Anneliese blinked hazily, her eyes heavy like they were full of dust. Have another...? Her head cocked slightly, as her mind tried to wrap around the scene in front of her. It was midnight, she understood, on New Year's Eve. And, she and her husband had decided to pop over to England to celebrate, for they hadn't been in a while. Except... Anneliese raised her hand to her mouth, fingers pressing against her lips. This wizard wasn't her husband, she hadn't been just been kissing her husband, so why... hadn't she been kissing her husband?

She lingered steady for a moment, very seriously thinking about this new offer. Would she like to give it another go, then? That was a very good question. That snog had been quite good, and Anneliese found herself feeling torn between wanting to very much and feeling relatively indifferent. Was that possible? Just when she had decided that yes, she would quite like to, out of the corner of her eye a flying fist zoomed past her ear and planted itself right beneath her intended kisser's eye near his nose.

Anneliese shrieked, and stumbled back, accidentally skewing her own mask in the process. What had--- who was--- Will? Was that Elphias? HAD SHE JUST SNOGGED ELPHIAS?!

"WILL!" Anneliese screeched, watching in horror as Elphias fell to the ground. She jumped forward with her hands out in hopes of grabbing whatever excess fabric of her husband's robes that she could. "WILL! WILL! WILL!" she continued to scream, legs and arms moving quickly to divert his attention from her former housemate.

After a rather dismal year on the romantic side of things, Cassandra easily fell into the role of the third-wheel with some of her friends. She'd still moved around the party, of course, but she always seemed to be pulled back to Estella's side after each dance Estella managed to twist out of Caden, which was certainly a feat, honestly.

"Almost midnight," Cassandra noted with a sigh Caden approached, seemingly out of thin air. Honestly, she ought to know better, if she really wanted a kiss, all she had to do was find a single bloke, but those seemed hard to come by these days.

Which was why she should kiss Caden, obviously. It made complete sense and Estella would surely be willing to share him. They were friends, after all.

"Happy New Year, you gorgeous thing," Cassandra purred as the clock chimed midnight and she moved to kiss Caden firm and deep, until her toes curled and her shoe lifted in delight.

It may have seemed as though Caden had appeared out of thin air, but he couldn't even remember where it was he had been coming from, or where he had been heading. He knew he had a purpose - likely to find his wife before the clock struck twelve, welcoming in the new year. Instead, he found himself face to face with Cassandra; mask to mask, to be more specific. The thought of finding Estella was quickly forgotten, and all he could think about was how nicely she filled out the gown she was wearing. Without thinking about what he was doing, he acted on instinct, one of his hands reaching out to rest against the flare of her hip.

Her New Years sentiments were not returned, seeing how he had grown impatient and had always been under the impression that actions spoke louder than words. His hand slid around to the small of her back, the other lifting to be placed at the side of her neck, his thumb brushing back just below her earlobe. He let out a low hum of satisfaction before pulling away from her.

"Not a bad way to start the new year..."

How Jeremiah got to this moment was still a mystery. Though is was not at all complaining about the fact that it was midnight, he had a beautiful witch in his arms and she just so happened to be a brilliant snog. This was how you started a new year out right. It was just what he needed to get him out of the ridiculous funk he had been in.

Just two hours ago he'd been considering leaving, Miles was preoccupied with his date. He had never manned up enough to ask Billie to come after their chat at the Arrows party. He thought he was doomed to spend the New Year on his own until he spotted the amazing brunette from across the room just before midnight. She called to him, and all he knew was that if he didn't go over and do something immediately, he might just implode.

Miles would have been impressed had he seen how direct he was. Walking straight over to the witch and telling her quite plainly that he planned to make this be best New Year's to date. For both of them.

"See? Happy New Year." He said pulling back from her lips just enough to speak.

Happy New Year indeed. Odette opened her eyes slightly, watching this masked master snogger through her lashes. How had she known this tall, dark, and handsome wizard in her arms would be an excellent midnight snog? Well, that was a foggy mystery, one that simply could not be solved at this current time, but nonetheless she was thoroughly pleased with herself that she'd had the foresight to flag him down.

Had she been looking for him all night? Perhaps... earlier, there had been a time in which Odette distinctly remembered laughing a lot with her teammates. But then, suddenly Axe had departed and Charlie wandered off, so she had... thought it was time to... what had she thought it was time to do?

She couldn't remember. It wasn't important. What was important was how quickly she could get his hands back to her skin.

Without as much as responding to him (there really was no need for words), Odette threw more of her weight into him. She clutched the sides of his face below his ears, her mask bumping with his as she pressed her mouth back to his lips. How long had it been since she experienced a unfamiliar kiss like this? One of her hands released his face to travel down underneath the inside of his collar.

Vinny checked his watch. The ten minute countdown had begun and while he had the utmost faith in Gleny to be done with her WWN duties in time for their midnight kiss, she was cutting in close. 11:54 was a dangerous time to be on the opposite side of the ballroom from your date, especially when she looked as marvelous as she did.

The past year had started off roughly, but it had completely turned around once he and Gleny had opened their eyes to what had been in front of them for so long. Vinny was so thankful to have her in his life, he always had been, but to be her boyfriend, to want her to be so much more...it was a feeling he thought he'd never experience again.

A feeling that...that he suddenly couldn't recall. Vinny turned his head to face the woman he had been conversing with for the past half hour as both of their dates had disappeared into the crowd for drinks and other business. Vinny smiled, tilting his head slightly.

"I think we should kiss now," he said, lips pressing together as yes, that sounded like a grand idea. His eyes crinkled behind his mask, and he took the woman's chin in his hand before he kissed her firmly.

It felt like she had not spoken with Vinny in years, and it was because of that that Mackenzie all too happily chatted away with him, almost completely losing track of time until midnight was suddenly upon them. Were they to ring in the New Year already? She turned, assuming Sebastian would be standing right beside her but... her brow furrowed. Where was he? She rose up onto her toes thinking that, perhaps, he too had wandered into an old friend and had simply gotten carried away in conversation, but he was no where to be found.

That was strange.

Another strange occurrence: her sudden and unyielding desire to snog Vinny Gudgeon into the new year.

Mackenzie blinked behind her mask, finding that it almost felt like an internal struggle was brewing within her. Concerning what, exactly, she was not sure, but in the end she supposed it would not be the absolute worst thing in the world to share an amicable kiss with Vinny. They had been friends, peers, for such a long time, so it would not be utterly absurd, yes?

"Happy New Year Vinny," she said, smiling after pulling back from him. Perhaps the kiss had been a bit more than friendly, but, for whatever reason that did not seem to bother her. It had felt sweet, and not at all intrusive, much like how she had viewed Galvin Gudgeon over the years. For a moment, she even felt inclined to request for another. But, that would definitely be utterly absurd, so instead she laid a delicate hand on his forearm.

"If you help me find Sebastian, I will help you locate your radio star girlfriend," she nodded, being sure to keep her lips pressed together primly.

She had wanted to kiss Gabriel Corner since 1974.

Bess sighed in content as his lips trailed up her jawline. Gabriel Corner. Gabriel Corner! He was the dreamboat that every girl in her year had fawned over at one point in their life. His hair curled in the most perfect of ways, his jaw was made of steel. He was simply...he was simply the epitome of a man. He was a man, and he’d pulled her to him with such ease that Bess felt like they’d been doing this her whole life.

Her eyes opened as she let out a happy sigh, and she noticed that the rest of the dance floor was literally wrapped up in each other. Huh. That was peculiar. She submitted to Gabriel’s requests for a few more kisses, but her eyes continued to move over the crowd. While her mind was fogged, it had not completely forgotten...she knew who some of these people were, like that one couple...and a tugging feeling in her chest told her that there was a reason she did.

To get a better look, Bess pushed up her mask and felt as if a bucket of ice water had been poured over her. She shrieked, startling Gabriel and causing him to back away. She felt--she felt filthy!

“What’s wrong, my love?” he said, stepping towards her again. Bess gasped and swiftly slapped him across the face, sending his mask flying into the crowd. Gabriel looked aghast and she watched as pure horror overcame him as he took in the sight of her.

“Oh my---I am so sorry--!”

Bess’ face screwed up and she didn’t wait for him to finish his apology. This couldn’t be happening, what had come over her? Not again, she couldn’t have had yet another man’s lips on hers, it---The ballroom was frantic with shouts of protest, intensive snogging, and...and none of it made any sense. Her mind whirled, and she made her way to the last place she could remember seeing Drystan. Bess pushed guests out of the way, not bothering to excuse herself and----she froze at the sight of her husband wrapped up with...she had seethed at that little wench earlier in the night, flouncing about the party as if she didn’t have a husband and children in that barely there red dress.

Her fists clenched, ready to tear every hair out of Maggie Brand’s head. She wanted to---Bess felt the hot tears sting her eyes. She knew that--that something had to have caused this, as she had just been snogging Gabriel Corner without any reason as to why, but the sight of Drystan and her, of all people! Of all people! Bess let out a breath and disapparated with a loud crack, unable to handle any of this ruined night.

Nora giggled sweetly, “How did we end up under the table?”

She covered her mouth to try to hold back her giggles, but the need to kiss Elliot again was too great. He laughed into her mouth, putting a hand back onto the floor as she nearly toppled him over. Oh, right! She had launched herself at him from her seat and they’d both slipped to the ground. It was all really rather funny, and she was sure that Elsie would find it hilarious too.

Hmm, she wondered, as she pressed more thoughtful kisses to Elliot’s lips. Elsie and Elliot Alderton were two of her oldest friends, she really did care about them dearly! Hell, she’d even set them up on the blind date that started their whirlwind marriage! She took credit for this match made in heaven, and Nora mused about that as Elliot’s tongue slipped into her mouth.

“Mm,” she hummed, pulling away from him to play with his hair, her eyes wide with excitement. “Do you think Elsie would want to join us under here?”

“Are you suggesting what I think you’re suggesting…” Elliot said, eyebrows waggling. Nora flushed a deep red, and she pulled off her mask to smack him with it.

“Elliot Alderton!” she scolded. Nora blinked, staring at the love-struck eyes of her friend...that she’d just been kissing. Her friend who had just insinuated that she wished to have threesome with his wife. “Elliot. ALDERTON!”

Nora shrieked, jumping up only to knock her head into the underside of the table. Oh, oh, oh! She had to get out from under there, she had to! She yanked her hand out of Elliot’s grasp as he had attempted to pull her back under the table, but Nora escaped. Oh, oh, oh! This couldn’t be happening! She put her hands on her face to try and calm herself down, but it was of no use. Her heart was beating madly, her head was swirling.

“Nora, relax!” Elliot’s voice rang through the crowd, and he put his hands out to her. “Just relax. C’mere.”

“No! You’ve got a wife!”

“So? We’re meant to be!”

“Elliot!”

“As if you didn’t fancy me in school!” Elliot roared with laughter. Nora’s face flushed a deep red. She had not fancied him for more than a few months, thank you very much! And in third year, it barely even counted! Elliot continued toward her and Nora picked up a fork from the table. He laughed again, pushing his mask up, “You’re being...you’re being…”

Nora watched as a look of realization washed over his face. Elliot paled and put a hand to his head.

“What the bleeding fuck was I kissing you for?”

Nora frowned, “Well, thanks for that.”

He laughed into her mouth, hands hovering by his side in an excited manner as their lips pressed together.

"I'm so---sure---we're not---supposed to---be doing---this!"

And it was hilarious! Sebastian had found himself drinking just wee bit too much as nearly all of his former Gryffindor housemates were in attendance of the party. What a reunion! There were those that were missing, and they toasted a drink to them, but to see Billie, Joy, Alex, Graeme all at once, in the same room, had Sebastian...feeling lively and happy! Not that he wasn't lively and happy on most days of his life, because he really did have a wonderful life, but he felt like a kid again. Hogwarts had been so long ago for them and so much had changed, but...but...

"I'm having a great night!" Sebastian exclaimed, pulling away from the woman he was kissing to throw his hands up into the air. He looked around, noticing that many couples had decided to kiss a wee bit earlier than tradition dictated. Where was his wife? He'd lost sight of her, whatever her name was. The fact that he had a wife trickled into his thoughts, and he looked down to the woman he'd just been kissing.

"I've got a wife!" he said, leaning forward to kiss this woman again. His mask knocked into hers. "And kids!" Another kiss. "I probably shouldn't be kissing you!" And another!

Billie was certain that 1985 was going to be amazing - she was a bloody champion, and that was something she was going to cherish forever. Normally she had to be prodded by either her publicist or Healer Diggle to attend social events, but she had actually gone to the New Years party on her own accord. She was glad she had, seeing how she had run into quite a few people she hadn't seen in some time. She was certain that Alex and Joy were the only two of her graduating class she had seen since they all parted ways; Joy because she was married to McLagen, and Alex because of that encounter at the bar. She was certainly in much better spirits than she had been at that point in time, and had been enjoying time with old friends up until the moment she decided that kissing Sebastian was what she wanted to do more than anything. It seemed like she wanted to kiss him more than she wanted to be champion, something she didn't think was possible.

She snickered at his random exclamations, the reminder at he had a wife not stopping her from running her hands through his hair as they kissed. "Than maybe she should have done a better job at keeping tabs on you," she replied with a grin, her cat-like eyes twinkling behind her mask before she lifted herself up to kiss him again before her hands moved to the sides of his neck, her fingers playing with the short hairs on his neck as she whispered into his ear.

"If I were your wife, I'd make sure to keep you all to myself."

It didn't take long for Seth to grow tired of his mask. When he first heard that the WWN New Year's party was a masquerade, he thought it was a fantastic idea. As him and Savannah were still keeping their relationship quiet, it meant they could still spend the night together and no one would be any the wiser.

Except as midnight grew closer, the more Seth realized he didn't want to hide what he had with Savannah anymore. So what what everyone else thought. It didn't matter, it wasn't going to change how he felt. His brother had certainly took it better than he had been expecting, perhaps the fall out wouldn't be as bad either.

Pulling off his mask, he smiled down at his date. He traced the edge of her mask as he wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her close to him. "Almost a new year." he said tilting her mask up ever so slightly. "How about we start it off with nothing hidden and no secrets?"

Savannah had always been the type who liked playing in the dirt and wrestling with the girls when other girls her age were going shopping or practicing with their makeup. She preferred a pair of jeans and a t-shirt over dresses and skirts, and practically lived in sneakers while other women killed themselves in heels. She liked to be comfortable, and usually didn't worry about her appearance, though when she looked in the mirror after getting ready for the night, she found herself smiling.

She had been doing that a lot lately, though usually her reflection had little to do with it. Her face usually lit up when she was in the company of Seth Wadcock, her ex-husband and current...boyfriend? She was unsure of how to appropriately title their relationship, but what she was sure of was that she enjoyed the time she had been spending with him. She just wished things were different, and that she could actually be honest about why she had been so happy lately. Lately she had been lying to everyone when they asked where she was heading at night, or why she looked like she was daydreaming during the day. It was getting rather exhausting, but it was nice to be able to spend the holidays with Seth and not have to worry about all the looks of disapproval she was sure to receive once they were public knowledge.

The one person whose opinion mattered most to her was sure to have a field day when he found out his twin sister had gotten back together with Seth.

Not wanting to think about the scowl Sam would be wearing every time he was in the same room as Seth, Savannah spent her night enjoying being out in public with Seth without the public even knowing. She was able to laugh with him, and more importantly be near him. She had definitely enjoyed them having something that was just theirs, but she also knew that people were going to find out eventually. Maybe it would be better if people found out on their terms. With that in mind, she placed a hand on his chest, blinking behind her mask as she considered his words.

She didn't give a verbal answer, but instead took a half step back from him as the crowd began to count down from 10. She lifted her hands in order to carefully remove her mask without messing up her hair, not wanting to elbow him in the jaw in the process.

5....4....3...2...

The mask finally came off as the clock struck 12, finally revealing herself. She closed the space between them, the hand that wasn't holding the mask lifting up to place her hand on the side of his face.

"Nothing hidden and no secrets..." She smiled at him. "Happy New Year, Seth." That was the last thing she would say to him before she lifted herself up just enough to capture his lips in a kiss, not caring that anyone could see them. The idea was actually a little exciting and her pulse quickened as she wrapped her arms around his neck.

Ethiopia wasn’t a completely successful venture, but categorizing it as fruitless would not be correct either. He had wished, with all his heart, to find what he had been looking for, to find the person he had been looking for, but with such little information to go on, there had never truly been much hope. Dead ends after dead end only led him and Jake so far, and after a month, Ollie quietly informed his friend that their search, for the time being, was over. What he had received in Africa, while it may not be total closure, was enough to steady his aching heart and return home for the holidays relatively stapled together, this much he had decided.

This had been a poor decision. He should have known that his loving sister would not allow a short home visit before retreating to Venice, and furthermore would jump at the chance of dragging Ollie to anything social she could squeeze into their schedules. Which was how he found himself here, reluctantly milling about at a party he had no desire in attending, his only resolve rooting in the fact that his mask allotted a hair’s worth of space from others. People were hesitant to approach others when they were unsure who was truly behind the mask. Not that it was much of a matter, only a handful of people here would even know who he was, and half of that handful he would bother with…

She was not here, he had come to observe. A fact, Ollie realized, was unsure if it lightened his shoulders or burdened his heart. His conflicted, confused, and torn thoughts about Nona still continued to simmer within him, even after having not spoken or seen her since Halloween. He had not told her about his trip to Ethiopia, something he was sure would displease her, and while there tried very hard to convince himself of her beguiling and deceptive nature. It had not worked much, though, for he still thought of her everyday, but he supposed sometimes those thoughts wandered toward brief animosity, so that counted.

Ollie was just about to slip away (it seemed he had finally succeeded in shaking his Melania-sized shadow), when a glimpse of dark hair caught his eye. It was getting close to midnight, a time he had hoped he would not see at this party, but now…

The familiar unyielding tug within him sprouted to life, and like so many times before Ollie felt his blind emotion for Nona take over. How many times had it felt like when they approached each other everything else parted out of their way like the moving sea? How many times had their exchanges been wordless, but conveyed more than words ever could? How could he have thought…. he stopped short, allowing her to take the final few steps toward him. Why wouldn’t she talk to him, why would she just talk to him---

Oliver was weak, for despite wanting something different, believing this fallback nature had to change, he still moved his hands to gently hold her face and bent down to catch her lips in a sweet kiss. Perhaps he was simply eternally doomed to be at her whim, perhaps that was his punishment of running away for four years and hiding in the waters of Venice…

The world around them, like it always did, ceased to have relevance, and it was not until a few moments later that Ollie finally pulled back from her. Her lips felt different than he remembered, she tasted more honeyed than he had previously thought. But, what did he know? With little to no appetite as of late, what he did eat tasted bland, and weak. He should not complain, he was being allowed to touch her, hold her again, even if for the briefest and sparing of moments. Hoping to look into her eyes, for out of everything of hers they were what he could stare at forever, Ollie wordlessly reached he removed Nona’s mask, gripping the edges of it with his fingertips.

"Ollie!" she let out, seemingly just as surprised as he was at realizing the witch he had just been kissing was not Nona Pepper. His clutch on her immediately loosened, his fingers extending out, but before his hands could drop away, her grip on him tightened. He felt compelled to keep his hold on her, and continued to watch her eyes.

"I don't mind," Nicola Scarpin murmured, and rose up onto her toes to kiss him again. She hesitated, only for a moment, lingering enough to imply ‘do you?’

Ollie thought for a moment, truly pondering what his former housemate was offering him. Would he? A sad thought filled his head, and to help ward it away, he quickly closed the gap between the two of them and kissed her again, this time with much more vigor and meaning.

He felt nervous. Or, more specifically, excited, but not in a way that Edward felt he had experienced before. Of course he'd been nervous in the past, there were many things in life, in his life specifically, that had made him nervous, but this was a different kind of feeling. It felt, and justifiably so, like the nervous kind of jolt one would get before knowingly embarking on a life changing adventure. Or, unknowingly stepping into a situation with a hint of destiny in the air. Or perhaps a little bit of both, because when it came to life, he had always felt small equal parts of a person knew and didn't know what exactly was going to happen to them next---

He was sputtering again. Blinking quickly, and shaking his head, Edward readjusted his mask so it sat properly atop his face. For not the first time tonight, he had caught himself thinking about fate, and destiny, especially concerning being on the cusp of it, but was that entirely his fault? He had been planning, for weeks now, for tonight and now that it was here, he found it hard to control his jumpy mind.

Fortunately it was almost midnight and he would not have to wait any longer.

"I would like to show you something," Edward said, shifting to face his beautiful date. Graciela, he hoped, had little idea as to how the last few minutes of this year, and the countless to come into the next, would be spent. He took one of her hands into his, and smiled faintly. Hopefully she had heard him over this crowd. "If you will let me."

Even though she could not recall how many of these lavish events she had been to over the past few years, Graciela always found herself in awe. The ballroom was spectacular, the decorations were unbelievably beautiful, and the music made the evening air feel it had blown straight from a fairytale. She was glad that she had not grown immune to the spectacle, that she was very much still humble...but was she humble if she was happy to know she was humble? Did it work like that? Graciela let out a happy breath, turning toward Edward. She gave his hand a squeeze, nodding at his request.

Being with Edward tonight completed the wonder of the evening. There was no place she would rather be than with him, and even Zacharias had shooed them off, explaining that he was going to stay up late with Lavender and set off noise makers. Graciela was thankful for Psyke to take her son for the evening (and for the dress, the woman always made sure she was taken care of). She and Edward did not need romantic evenings and grand affairs, but it was certainly nice seeing him so dressed up.

The view on the balcony he'd lead them out to was amazing and thankfully charmed to be warm, but to let the snow continue to fall around them. Ay, magic. She didn't let go of his hand while she moved to the railing, looking out at the city and the stars above them. The fireworks in the night sky would prove truly magical, and Graciela leaned over the edge slightly to see if there were any others preparing to watch the display from the roof of their homes.

"What is it that would wanted to show me?" she asked as she searched the skyline. She turned back to Edward with a smile, and she adjusted her mask with her free hand.

Nearing close to midnight, and Saoirse could contently say that this New Year's was turning out significantly better than her last. No major international tournament impeded her thoughts, no teammates overbore with wheeze-worthy intrusive questions about her boyfriend, and while said boyfriend still made her brain feel like it was simultaneously short circuiting and freezing at the time, she had become better at dealing with this sensation, and recovered from it nearly gracefully these days. It was all around a better start to the new year, even with her housemates and their rather miserable dispositions.

Penelope, Saoirse at least understood. After what had happened... it would leave her feeling shaken, reserved, and unwilling to reach out to others as well. But Nona-- seeing as her best friend absolutely refused to talk to Saoirse about what currently had her blowing up the house more than normal, Saoirse felt little guilt in dragging her out tonight, declaring that if she wanted to be any kind of friend to Penelope, then Nona would support this general outing and attempt in getting their final housemate to leave the house and trust the public again.

She would probably end up with a potion that turned her face orange during tomorrow morning's breakfast, but Saoirse decided she didn't particularly care about that. Later, perhaps, but at the very least definitely not now, for now she had a boy's hand in her own and was excitedly pulling him toward her for a proper New Year's celebration. Mask settled firmly atop her head, Saoirse leaned back against the wall as her arms swung around to rest on his shoulders. She had never truly enjoyed public displays of affection, or even snogging when other people were around, but for some reason, at the moment, it didn't bother her. The only thing that did bother her was what he exactly was waiting for. An invitation, perhaps?

Rising up onto her toes, the ends of her lips curled into a smile. Saoirse kissed the side of his face first, just above his jaw while murmuring, "Happy New Year," before shifting to his lips. What a wonderful kiss.

Howell did not consider himself a very festive person. He liked the idea of the holidays, and of winter, of the warm parlours with lit fires in which families gathered for the holidays, but it had been many years since he had had such a Christmas, though he did his best for his brother and sister.

With warmly melancholy thoughts causing a hard lump to rise in his throat, he wrapped his arms around Saoirse's waist and let the world around them drift into a haze as he fell deeper into the kiss. This night was a far cry from their last new year's eve, and Howell could not stop himself from making all sorts of parallels between then and now, and of the years preceded by both.

He could not say if this year had been more or less eventful, in a better or worse way, than the one before it, but Saoirse and he had been together for all of it, or nearly all of it, and that was what counted. Still, he believed that they could weather anything if they stood by each other's side.

These moments were still preciously few and far between to Howell, and he slid his arms around her waist so he could revel in just the simpleness of touching her, being touched by her.

"Happy New Year," he agreed, holding her close, kissing her to the cheers and shouts of the noisy hall they drifted endlessly in.

It was brought to his attention by select others that there was concern mounting about his supposed "drinking habits" in conjunction with his "destabilizing injury" to the point where it may "seriously jeopardize" his career, because why, for example, would Poland want an alcoholic Keeper with a broken head to represent it in the upcoming World Cup? Did he want to continue with quidditch? Did he want to continue down this path? Because undoubtably, if his goal was to be reinvented as a reboot of a certain teammate of his circa 1980, then by all means, he should continue on his merry way! But if Michal was near about ready to be taken seriously again, then he better blood clean up his act!

Well. Clearly Henry Wadcock had a way with words, because not twelve hours later was Michal all-too-smugly clutching his third glass of firewhisky and currently contemplating how Wadcock's speech had most certainly not mentioned anything about random sexual endeavors. Nope, it was just his burning desire to drink and incurable head wound that was the problem here, so one night quick fixes surely wouldn't be a problem. Except it seemed that every witch and her extended friend had come with a date, so Michal's seemingly brilliant plan of a new year hookup was failing.

Resting his elbow, he looked out onto the crowd begrudgingly. Despite it being almost nearly midnight, but not quite, couples had already begun to pair off. He would have rolled his eyes in disgust (must they?), except in a fleeting moment, Michal felt a calming effect take over him. What did he care of other people's public happiness, it was of no concern to him. No, there was something else more important, something he had to find...

Setting his drink down on the bar, Michal quickly glided through the crowd, not exactly sure what he was looking for but knew, from the very bottom of his gut, that he would know it when he saw it.

Was that it? He stopped, caught at the sight of what was undoubtable the most ravishing witch he had ever laid eyes on. Her, that was it, the person he had been looking for all night. With little acceptance of acknowledgment, Michal approached her, wrapping his hands around her almost instantly.

"Hello," he smiled, and without missing a beat feverishly pressed his mouth to hers.

Greta often felt she walked a fine line, being a reporter for The Daily Prophet and attending social events without her press pin. As she was an investigative reporter, and not one who covered society or gossip (at least, not since she had been assigned a feature some years ago), people ought to have felt more comforted when they learned a reporter was in their midst.

Unfortunately, particularly amongst crowds with Quidditch players and other rag-attractors, anyone who wrote about anyone else for a living was generally iced out, despite the fact that, meaning no offence, Greta would find a handful (and that was generously speaking) of people here relevant and interesting enough to garner headlines in her particular line of work.

But, strangely enough, telling people that offended them even more!

Having a date to attend functions with generally eased the awkwardness, but Greta had flown solo since the last New Year's Eve gala, come to think of it. She had accompanied Miranda and Ralph, but they were so excited about their newest member of the family (and who could blame them), that Greta quietly excused herself so they could celebrate in peace.

It was close to midnight, and she flitted aimlessly amongst gaggles of people, some she knew from work, from school, or some lingering acquaintanceships formed from when she dated Ludo Bagman. Greta felt lonely, thoughtful, and quite a bit tipsy, playing with the edges of her mask and not quite knowing what to do with herself.

When hands wrapped themselves around her, she felt fervor, rather than fear. When lips touched hers with boldness and ownership, she felt satisfaction rather than outrage. In fact, her hands wove themselves around him, and she pressed as close as was physically possible, still unhappy with the distance. How had he known just what she wanted, just when she most needed it?

She drew back with a wide, knowing smile. "I know those lips," she said tapping her masked man's cheek.
