Previous Entry  Add to memories!  Tell a Friend!  Next Entry

She had to sit down upon Holly Troy's unveiling of Thomas' last twelve hours, and Rose found that she was too far stunned to do much else than continue to sit after the story was over.

Thomas had been...

But then last night when...

And now he was...

Rose looked up at Holly with desperate eyes, wishing very much that there was more for her to tell, a better ending to leave off at for this almost unbelievable tale. It felt like fiction in her ears, the entire thing, and if this morning hadn't turned so strangely so fast, Rose wouldn't have believed it. All of it, from the idea of Thomas having a secret pregnant girlfriend to being frozen in Nott Manor as an almost stranger informed her and Kendall that their best friend was now a single father to a premature child felt... it felt...

It felt like she and Kendall were on the outside looking in to this whole other world Thomas had created for himself, and it was only through a tragic string of events that they were included now.

And then, immediately, Rose felt guilty for her thoughts, for now, out of all times, was not about that. It was about helping navigate her friend, her very best friend, through something that she could quite certainly say the three of them never thought they would have to face in their lifetimes. It was about ensuring Thomas would come back from this, helping him return to as much as his former self as possible. Was that possible? She didn't... she wasn't sure about much of anything at the moment.

Holly had escorted them to Thomas' room, and it was with a wary glance at Kendall that Rose raised her hand to knock on the door.

"Thomas?"

She spoke softly, pressing closer to the door only when there was no response. Her free arm clutched her opposite elbow, her back curled in a wounded manner. "It's us," Rose continued, her brow permanently furrowed. "May we come in?" It was entirely formal, of course, because all three of them knew she and Kendall were going to barge on in regardless of Thomas' wishes, but they always played this game.

The interruption of his silence broke open his barricaded emotions. Thomas dropped his head, knowing that Rose and Kendall were outside the door and ready to come. He could already see their faces, hear their tones of concern, the questions, all the questions. He knew he'd fucked up. He did, and he'd been planning on making it right. Thomas sat on the edge of the bed, still in his dress pants from last night, contemplating how he could explain this new disaster he'd found himself in.

It had started simply enough. Boy meets girl and all the fun stuff that comes with that. She had intrigued him and had been there when he needed someone who didn't know a thing about him, who couldn't judge him for the poor decisions he'd made. Thomas was glad for the escape. And he'd liked her. So when it got--serious, it was easy. And it was easy to hide because he didn't know what she wanted, he never really knew, and it was easy to focus on quidditch, and it was easy to wait until everyone was relaxed and calm, and it was just easier.

A wave of misery washed over him. Thomas had been okay with taking the easy route, and Julia had been fine with it because she knew there was a chance this might happen, that the pregnancy would fail, or worse, that she wouldn't make it through. It was easier for her to deal with than to tell him the truth, just like it had been for him to keep the details of his magical life separate. Had they both thought it would be better for the other? There was some shining light in that thought. She'd cared enough about him to keep her distance.

That seemed to be the case. Anything he got close to turned to dust, either by fate or his own hands. The only thing that had lasted for any decent length of time was his friendship with Rose and Kendall, and he'd basically betrayed them by keeping this whole ordeal a secret.

He'd been so excited to tell them. He felt so miserable about it now.

Thomas lifted his wand from the night stand and flicked it at the door, the sound of the lock turning making him to wince. He couldn't look at them as he entered, ashamed by his secrets, hurt by the truth, and angry himself for the resistance needed to keep his tears at bay. There was no use crying again, it wasn't going to fix anything, it wasn't going to make thing right.

After everything that happened in the past, after already having to deal with Thomas being kidnapped and stabbed, Kendall could barely deal with the vague 'you just need to come here' response he got from Holly. What could have happened now that would cause Thomas to miss lunch and not be able to contact them himself.

He barely heard Holly's story, trusting that Rose was most likely soaking in every word. She was much better at details than he was. What he did gather is that though Thomas was fine (in some definitions at least) yet another tragedy had struck his friend and there wasn't a thing to do about it.

He didn't even know. Which, as much as the three of them nosed in each others lives, who could really blame him. Hearing the lock click, Kendall gave Rose a little nod to open the door, then made his way quietly across the room.

He sat down on the bed next to Thomas, leaning back on his elbows to stare at the ceiling. He didn't know what to say. Kendall was at a complete loss for words because what exactly did you say in a situation like this. He sighed looking over to Rose, then back to Thomas. "Do you need anything?"

It was an innocent enough question, but it was like a dam had burst in his head. What did he need? Thomas needed a time turner, he needed an obliviator, he needed to dig himself a hole and hide away like Uric the Oddball. He needed Julia to not be dead and he needed that baby to still be alive even though he had no bloody idea what to do next. Thomas pressed the heel of his hand into his eye as he tried to physically force back his tears, and shrugged his shoulders.

"I need to go back to the hospital," he said, nearly choking on the words. They'd sent him home to sleep, though it was more like Holly dragging him away before he could completely lose his mind. He hadn't been able to give them a telephone number to contact him, so who knew what had happened over these past few hours. Maybe the baby was gone too. "She's in the intensive care unit. They don't know if she's going to---"

He sucked in a breath, teeth chattering as he struggled against losing all composure. The pain and the guilt was overwhelming, and as his mind ran in circles he realized that even if he had shared the news earlier, he'd still be here, with Julia dead and the baby clinging onto life. The only difference would be that his friends and family would have had months to get attached and that excitement would've been doused with this miserable act of fate.

Thomas twisted his neck, still having been unable to look either of them in the eye.

"I was going to tell you today," he said, wondering why he was even bothering to struggle against this tidal wave of emotions. It was pointless, like most things felt right now. "I planned lunch, I had---a story. It was stupid." He let out a breath and looked up at the ceiling. "Oh, fuck, I can't---I have to make you her godparents before she dies because a kid needs--"

Tears finally fell and Thomas dropped his head again, covering his face with his hands, "I'm sorry." He let out the muffled cry and he wasn't sure to who.

She? The baby was a girl?

Rose's heart, which was already in the process of breaking in half, burst open upon this small slip of Thomas', the most insignificant of news when all things considered. Thomas with a girl-- he had a little baby girl? Her eyes immediately began to water, and Rose struggled to keep her composure.

She had seated herself across from Kendall, sitting opposite of Thomas' side. But now that was not enough, and Rose quickly moved to sit before Thomas, facing him despite his deep determination to look everywhere but at them. She couldn't blame him. But it was important that he knew they were here to help.

Her hand crept to Thomas' shoulder, and even though she wanted to grip it tightly, use it to pull him close, Rose kept her distance. "We will come with you," she spoke gently, dipping her chin as well in an attempt to crane her neck and get Thomas to look at her. When it was no use, her hand inched up toward Thomas' face, her fingers prickling the parts of his cheek that was uncovered by his own hands.

"Kendall and I will come with you. And then, if you want, we can owl Danielle about moving the baby to Mungo's. You can tell us the--" her voice hitched for a moment, briefly feeling caught before continuing "-- story that I'm sure is not stupid."

How else could she say how desperate this made her feel? For Thomas to let them in, for her to allow them to help, to... to help fix this situation. There was magic, there was always magic something could be done.

Rose extended her other arm out across the bed, turning her open palm out for Kendall to grasp. She looked at him sadly. "Right, Kendall?"

Kendall sat up at the mention of being a god parent. Godfather to a baby girl, he could barely wrap his head around it. Around any of this. If you had asked him just last week, he would have been positive none of them were ready to marry, let alone raise a child.

Now, within the span of five minutes Kendall had learned that his best friend had a girl, lost his girl and now was going to be a single father all in one fell swoop. "Don't apologize," Kendall said blanching slightly at his words. That Thomas thought it was necessary to even do so in such a situation. "If anything is stupid, its you thinking you have to apologize to us for anything."

He placed his hand on Thomas' shoulder as he finally pulled his attention off the floor and onto his best friend. "Whatever you need, we're here for you, but first we should--- have you eaten anything since last night? We'll get something on the way."

"Then you can take us and introduce us to--" Kendall paused realizing that he didn't know the little girl's name. He wasn't even sure if Thomas had the chance to name her. "Introduce us to your little girl, if you want to." The baby had to be fine, he decided while trying to convince Thomas that moving might be a good idea. Any child related to Thomas had to be a fighter. McCormacks were stubborn and there was no way Kendall was going to accept Thomas taking another major loss in such little time.
