Penelope lurched back when Charlie smashed into the unseen force separating them, bewildered by the newest trick the maze had shown them. She then listened with dismay as the dreamy voice floated out across the room, bearing the instructions needed for their quickest escape.
Did the spell's edict work both ways, Penelope wondered. Did she have to tell a secret as well in order to lift the veil of the spell? Despite all the spooky horrors she had just faced, with and without someone by her side, Penelope felt real panic for the first time that night.
There was still so much unsaid. There were still… secrets, yes, being kept, but she had thought, she had hoped and prayed and convinced herself and those that knew them, that her remaining secrets would lay buried. That Penelope would be able to move on without involving more people in her life in the sadness and drama, and she had. She simply did not know now how revealing those secrets would fare, and did not know if she was ready to face those demons. Life had just begun to turn itself around for her.
Not to mention that she was very willing to offer Charles the same courtesy she hoped extended to herself—she had no desire in the slightest to learn of secrets being kept from her. Penelope's wings began to beat rapidly, in tune to her galloping heartbeat.
"I'm sure it's just trying to trick you," she said in a voice that might have been unnaturally high herself. Backing away, she was quick to add, "If you just want to stay where you are, I'll go around it. The maze can't change that quickly, I'll be back to find you."
