Max felt himself pale, and he struggled to string together a believable reply. For himself, or concerning Oliver, he wasn't exactly sure for both felt equally difficult to cover up and avoid; Melania had never taken kindly to his ex-girlfriend, and she most definitely would not react well to the news he was currently harboring about her brother.
"I--" he began, but felt his voice fall short as a wisp of red flashed in the corner of his eye. No, he definitely did not have enough strength to go down that path now.
Grimacing, Max apologized idly to Melania's little brother. He tried as long and hard as he could to keep the secret, but it had become simply too much to withhold from his best friend.
"Melania, I think I might..." Max began, but was soon bristled by a random walker-by. Frowning further, he waited until she had passed to pull his chair forward, scraping it closer to Melania's for a more private exchange. This was sensitive information, news not meant for just any pair of ears. His lips pulled together into another frown, and he continued in a quieter tone.
"It's about Oliver." His hands resting on his thighs began to clam up. "I think I might know what's the matter with him."
His words were met with Melania's expectant eyes, pushing him to go on, so he did.
"Well, I..." he began, but soon thought that was a poor way to begin the story. So, he tried again. "When I was in..." Max tried again, but then felt it wrong to include other select persons in the story. All Melania needed to know was the part about her brother. Max let out a tired anxious sigh, one of his hands going to rest agains the side of his head.
Melania should know, people should know. It was still unclear to him if Oliver even knew, but out of everyone, his family most of all should... shouldn't they? Max sat up straighter in his seat, nodding his head slightly in preparation for the words about to spill out of his mouth. It was for the best, he was sure of that.
He opened his mouth, intent on telling Melania straight out, but his mouth produced and expelled information entirely different than planned.
"Your brother smokes."
