Who: Corner and Iris Conway
What: :[/:]
Where: The Conway household
When: Late Friday night

To say that Iris Conway was exhausted was an understatement. The past week had been stressful and terrifying, but she was glad to be safe. Unfortunately, she couldn't sleep and was sitting in the living room at home, bundled up on the couch in the comforter from her room. Her fingers idly played with the locket that once belonged to her mother, eyes staring off into space as a reporter droned on about something trivial on the WWN. Amazingly, she'd done well this far to hold back her tears. She wanted to be strong, as if her lack of emotion would prove that she could handle the tough job of being an auror in the future.

Corner had never been particularly good with 'feelings'. He'd always been able to keep himself in check when it came to rescues, but it had never been a rescue of someone he'd known, not really. Perhaps he'd overreacted, but he didn't much care about that at the moment.

Having finally finished his paperwork, he slipped into the living room with a plate of sandwiches.

"Are you ... hungry?" It was a little awkward.

She snapped out of her trance when he spoke, the disturbance making her jump a little. She let out a soft breath of relief, obviously glad that it was just her dad. She appreciated the plate of sandwiches, but didn't really feel up for anything at the moment. She shrugged, trying very hard to keep eye contact with him. She wanted to talk to let everything out, but she didn't know how to say it, how to describe her feelings or even what to say in the first place.

He hesitated before he slipped down onto the couch next to her, setting the plate of sandwiches on the table in front of them.

...it really didn't help that his girlfriend was a woman of very few words either. Corner reached over to slowly stroke his hand over the back of her neck.

"You're safe," He reminded her quietly.

She tensed up a bit when he touched her, but relaxed immediately. She looked down at her hands. "I know," she replied. And she did, she just didn't know how to convince her body of it. She felt the urge to apologize to him, but she knew that was ridiculous. It wasn't her fault that she was kidnapped, after all. She leaned over, gently placing her head on his shoulder.

No, it wasn't her fault -- if anything it was his fault. He hooked his arm around her gently and held her as best he could without becoming exceedingly awkward. Maybe they could just sit like this for a little while without having to talk.

That would be nice, but he didn't think that would happen. He knew Iris would need to talk to someone, but perhaps he could find someone ... trained to do so.

Of course they couldn't just sit like that. Iris felt her tears finally spill over as she pulled her legs in tightly. So much for the moment. "I'm sorry," she said softly, her hand raising to wipe stubbornly at her eyes. She didn't want him to see her break down, even if it was completely expected.

He'd been expecting something like this to happen. Corner frowned a little more and brushed his fingers through her hair as best he could manage to.

"It certainly isn't your fault, Iris," he murmured with a small shake of his head. "Do you want to take a few days off of classes?"

"I don't know," she replied. Oi, the thought of all the school work she'd missed was not a good one; but the thought of going back so quickly was even worse. She needed time to know that everything was going to be alright, that something like this wouldn't happen again.

"You'll be staying here for at least a few more days," he decided, since she was obviously just saying that she didn't know -- he could at least pick up on that much.

Corner glanced her over again, worried. "You're feeling all right, though, aren't you?" Hopefully the healers had done their jobs.

No. "I think so..." There was only so much healers could do, after all. And most of the damage that was done was psychological.

She paused, thinking back to earlier when he'd finally shown up. "Is it always like that?" she asked. "The rescue part, I mean." It was such an eye opener for her, watching how quickly things progressed and happened.

"Most often," he admitted readily, keeping her close and picking up a sandwich to offer to her.

It wasn't often that he was so off-the-handle, but the other Aurors, he supposed, could at least understand why he had been like that. He would be suggesting therapy to her, but not today. Perhaps in a few weeks.

She pulled her head from his shoulder and grabbed the sandwich, even if she wasn't hungry; it was better to go along with it so he wouldn't worry about her. At least he'd made her favorite kind.

There was a small part of her that wasn't sure about being an auror anymore. But then she thought about everything; no one deserved to go through what she had. She wanted to make sure that others didn't have to go through what she had. "Do you think I could get my school work owled to me? So I can get a start on it." Maybe she could get some Transfiguration help, since she no longer had a tutor in the subject.

Corner nodded firmly. "I am sure that I can have it owled for you." He hesitated, "Perhaps I could help you. It never hurts for me to brush up, after all." He smoothed his hand through his hair and smiled just a little. At least she was eating.

She smiled. "I'd like that. A lot." She let out a soft sigh, trying very hard not to yawn. She wasn't ready to sleep. She still felt too wound up. "Especially with transfiguration," she finally admitted, sneaking a look over at him.

He arched his brow at her and blinked. "Transfiguration? Well, I think that I should certainly be able to help with that." Corner had done well in most of his studies, honestly.

Iris nodded. "I...haven't been doing so well with it." Hey, she'd been putting off telling him for a while now; at least she was picking a decent time to break it? "Not that I haven't been trying." But maybe the help from him would make things easier in the long run.

"Well," he rubbed his hand over the back of his neck. "We'll have to see what we can do." He wasn't the sort to yell over this type of thing, but he would have liked her to be honest with him from the beginning.

"I've had a tutor for the past few months." She'd wanted to tell him, but didn't want him to think she couldn't handle being an auror. She wanted to be the good daughter, always able to handle things. She yawned, no longer able to hold it back. "I don't think he was very helpful, though." Just thinking about Barty's lack of compassion while they worked infuriated her.

"Well, that's a young man for you." He hesitantly eased her down onto the couch, settling the blankets around the girl and continuing to stay next to her for the moment, at least.

"I love you, Da," she said softly as she pulled the blanket closer to her body, eyes already shut. She was home, she was safe; she didn't have to be afraid to sleep.

"I love you too, Iris. You know that." He smoothed her hair down again and shifted, hoping she'd be able to sleep for a while at least.
