PEOPLE IN THE TAG
Rose had both arms wrapped around one of Octavius', swinging her legs with pointed toes as they walked down the cobbled street. That had been a nice date, with nice weather, nice food--- nice everything! They should have more dates like that one! Just calm, relaxed and--- happy! She just felt so happy in this moment, and not because of the beverage they had been drinking, but because they were getting back to normal again, with genuine happy feelings, and--- it just made her so happy to be happy with her boyfriend!

"Ohh, ohh, we should go get-- get---" Rose patted Octavius every time the word at the tip of her tongue escaped her. Desserts! Make desserts? No no, it was like pie but not really at all-- "Tarts!" she exclaimed happily, jumping slightly as it finally came to her. Though, she was rather full, so maybe something less heavy? "Or maybe whipped cream." Her smile curled into a grin as she her thoughts wandered, despite looking up to Octavius playfully. Her eyes strayed, just for a second and---

"Look it's Kendall!" she pointed, interrupting herself as she spotted their friend through the bar window they were walking by. What was he doing all alone by himself? That was sad. He had friends! He wasn't a loner! He shouldn't be looking sad! Though, the Kestrels had just lost to Pride, so that was kind of sad because who wanted them still winning?

Getting a smart idea, Rose turned back to Octavius. "Let's go say hi!" she said quickly, letting go of him to skip to the pub. It felt like she and Kendall hadn't talked in ages--- well, not really, but... just not as much as usual? With their schedules, and Thomas, and everything else... she didn't know what was going on with him. That was not acceptable.

"HI!" Rose exclaimed, promptly resting her elbow on the bar and her chin in her hand as she plopped herself in the seat next to Kendall.

Kendall liked having his alone time. It wasn't sad, or depressing it just was. As crazy as his teammates and friends were, he felt it should be completely understandable that he'd go out for a drink on his own now and then.

That and now that Felicia was on a different team, their schedules were harder to match up. The same went for Thomas and Rose. Even with everything going on, Thomas was still busy with Arrows. Now if Golf Tuesday got canceled, then he would be sad.

Rose on the other hand. Rose he was still upset with. So it really didn't bother him all that much that he hadn't seen or spoken to her in weeks. He frowned at the chipper voice that filled the seat next to him. He wasn't quite ready to let go of the irrational grudge he was holding onto. So much for just not seeing her until he was over it. He nodded, acknowledging her greeting as he finished his drink off.

He waved the bartender over. "I'll have my check, please."

What was that?

Was that it?

Customarily when addressed by a friend, especially when said friendship was established for at least month and bonding experiences had been shared, something more than a head nod was expected in return. Rose would have accepted a range of returns, from hug to a high-five, even a wave would have sufficed. Head nods were not on that spectrum, therefore she did not accept it. A slight pout formed on her face. She had just left her date with Octavius to come in and say hello, the least Kendall could do was--- Octavius!

Rose jerkily swerved in her chair, proving that control over it was difficult. Where had he.... she looked around, but after a few seconds many of the patrons faces began to blur together and it overwhelmed her. He was here! Somewhere! Perhaps he was still outside.... the noise of heavily placed coins on the bar top table snapped Rose's attention back to Kendall. What was he doing?

"Are you leaving now?" she blurted, leaning forward slightly as she spoke to him. But she had just gotten here! Why was he leaving? It wasn't that late, was it? Rose's pout from before was still present; he wasn't leaving because of her, was he? She shook her head. No, that was silly; it was something else. And if it was something else, then---

"Nooo-- stay Kendall!" she pleaded, tipping slightly to rest her hand on his shoulder. "Octavius is here, we'll have some fun!" Rose nodded her head enthusiastically, and began to slip one of her legs down toward the ground to stand up again.

Kendall stopped and looked over at Rose. Was she drunk? Maybe not drunk, but definitely not sober. Even more reason to make his escape while he still could. He ignored her swiveling in her seat and searching the crowd. Merlin, if Thomas was here too, Kendall was probably going to go off. He had just told him that he was to busy with Arrows stuff to go out for a drink. Tossing his money on the counter he went to stand only to be stopped by Rose. Tipsy Rose.

Wait, Octavius was here? Was Rose on a date? Kendall rolled his eyes and searched the crowd hoping he wasn't in sight, that he could easily slip away without feeling guilty at all. Kendall genuinely like Octavius. He was a nice guy, and most likely some sort of Saint. Most days he felt a bit bad for him, that he should probably tell him to run while he could because didn't he see the crazy in denial love thing Rose and Thomas had going on? But that was none of his business, now was it.

And that was also the exact problem he was having with Rose. Had she been Thomas' girlfriend and told him that it was best he not come over, that would be completely understandable. In that case she would outrank him. Kendall could respect a dating relationship. But she wasn't Thomas' girlfriend. Samantha was. Had he been in Rose's shoes, he certainly wouldn't have stopped her from coming over. In fact he most likely would have owled her right away. Because that is what best friends did. They certainly don't keep you out of the loop.

Kendall pursed his lips, shrugging away from Rose's hand. He had a drink or two as well, and his tact wasn't at its best level. "Thanks, but I think I'm going to go. You have fun with Octavius. I'm sure he doesn't want me crashing your date."

Her brow furrowed at Kendall's reaction. Why was he acting strangely? Well, not strangely, because his general demeanor tended to sway toward the gruff side, but now it was... bristly? Dispassionate? Miffed? Cold? Rose couldn't quite put her finger on a word that was appropriately descriptive enough. That didn't matter though, because what did matter was that something was bothering him! Potentially. It was much harder to tell with a fuzzy, distracted inner sense.

"Oh," Rose responded. That was true; Kendall third-wheeling would hardly be romantic. Being the third person with a couple was never fun. But--- Rose's mind was still set on that something was bothering him, why else would Kendall come out to drink alone and then leave when someone he knew showed up? Because he wanted alone time, but from who? Her swirling mind took the next step that came to her.

"Is something the matter with you and Felicia?" Rose blabbed suddenly, taking a few long steps to catch back up with Kendall's departing figure. That must be it! Drinking always helped with relationship problems, and who wanted to be around couples when that was your problem! Rose could understand; she and Octavius could be sickeningly cute when they wanted to be.

"You can tell me!" Rose reached for Kendall's shoulder again, completely forgetting he had just shrugged it off minutes earlier. "Maybe I can help!"

"Everything is fine between Felicia and I." Kendall said briskly. Well he assumed everything was fine, they hadn't spoken in a while, but they have both been busy so it was understandable. Even if things weren't fine, he wasn't really in the mood to tell Rose about it. And she certainly couldn't help. She could barely keep her own relationships straight. No that was mean. He shouldn't think things like that.

"You can't help. Just let me be." he said ducking out of her grasp again turning to face her. Why was she so insistent on stopping him. "Rose, stop." he said cutting her off before she could try and stop him again. "I don't want to talk to you." There, plain and simple.

He didn't want to--- Rose struggled for a moment, her thoughts taking a bit longer to piece his words together. This was mean Kendall, why was she getting mean Kendall? She didn't like mean Kendall. She avoided mean Kendall, usually at all costs because mean Thomas was enough to deal with so--- she felt her face heat up; he didn't want to talk to her, like she had gone and done to deserve that! What had she done!

"But---" Rose faltered, closing her eyes and shaking her head. This wasn't fair, he wasn't being fair. Nothing--- what had happened within the immediate past? Nothing! There was just quidditch and sleep. What had happened to Thomas? There hadn't been enough time for practically anything else. They had barely even talked, so-- so...

Now it bothered her! It was bothering her, Kendall's apparent need to stay away from her, and--- she didn't like it when the boys were mean to her. A pout reappeared, but this one was much deeper and a bit more confused. Her hands rose to her face, and she cupped her cheeks for a moment before opening her mouth again. Obviously.

"Why! What have I done?" she asked innocently, head tilting slightly.

Kendall didn't want to talk about this now. Not now, here in the bar, not later at his flat, not ever. Kendall did not want to discuss this with anyone, let alone Rose. He wanted to stew over it a little longer and then just eventually just let it go. It was hardly the first time he had been cut out of something he felt was important. He had dealt with it just fine like this before, it would work just fine again. If Rose would just leave him alone.

Except she wouldn't. She was just going to keep pressing on and pouting until she go what she wanted. Well that was just fine, if she wanted to know so badly then Kendall would tell her.

"You cut me out, like you always do when it comes to Thomas. You constantly make me feel like I'm the third wheel to a relationship that doesn't exist, and its getting old. You aren't dating Thomas, Rose. If anyone is going to be telling me to butt out it should be Thomas himself, or perhaps his actual girlfriend, Samantha."

He stopped taking a breath after his rant, running his hand over his face. He was so tired. He didn't want to deal with this. "I would have owled you. I would have asked you to come over, and I certainly wouldn't have told you to stay away. And that is enough to show me exactly how differently we view our friendship. So no, I don't want to have a drink with you right now. No I don't want to discuss whatever nonexistent problems may be in my relationship with you. Just no. Go back to your date with your actual boyfriend."

Hot tears began to prickle in Rose's eyes at Kendall's words, and even in her state she could notice that the people within their close proximity had gone quiet. Why was he saying these things, she had never purposely done anything to hurt him, it wasn't like---

She clamped her hands over her mouth, too shocked by his harshness to do much else. But she didn't! She didn't--- act that way. It wasn't--- Kendall wasn't being fair, he knew she and Thomas--- it was different, it wasn't like that; he meant too much to her to ruin with a complicated relationship like the one they'd attempted in school. They were just-- close, she didn't think they were dating--- he asked her to stay, he asked to, he-- if Kendall had shown up---

--- but she loved Octavius, why would she--- Rose felt her mouth contort into an uncontrollable frown. Did he feel this way, too? Was he merely putting up with her until--- until he exploded like Kendall was, right now? While she felt awful about Kendall and his believe that she had been treating him poorly, the deep pain that filled her concerning Octavius had no limit. He was so wonderful to her, so sweet, patient, and understanding, just the thought of unknowingly doing something to hurt him was unbearable. Why-- why would he--- why---

As indiscernible whimpers escaped her, and Rose redirected her gaze to lock down at her feet. She didn't think of Kendall that way, she didn't, didn't he know that? He didn't even want to talk to her. Rose had always considered Kendall to be one of her most trusted friends, someone that would , but now it felt like he wanted to purposely hurt her because he could.

Rose's hands slid up to cover her face. She was too embarrassed, hurt, and disoriented to walk out, or away. Unable to control herself, she cried harder. Was this really what he thought of her all this time?

Kendall pursed his lips as Rose covered her face and started to cry. He could feel the gazes of the other people around them. This is why he didn't want to say anything. Exactly why he tried to leave. Because the second you said something upsetting to Rose she started crying and it left him feeling like a prick.

He was not going to feel guilty about how he felt. He probably could have told her in a kinder fashion, but that's what she got for pressing the issue. This was not his fault. She wasn't even saying anything! Just standing there crying. Kendall couldn't decide if she was crying because he was right and called her out on it, or if she was crying because she thought he was being mean. He couldn't deal with this.

"You wanted to talk." he said holding up his hands. After all these years she should have know better than to push him while he was upset. "You don't get to cry and make me feel guilty about how I feel. Not after you insisted on stopping me from leaving. Not when you can't prove me wrong. Rose, you are one of my best friends, but sometimes you make me feel like the only reason we're friends is because of Thomas and that's not okay."

He should just leave. Octavius was somewhere around here, he could cheer her up. Kendall did feel bad that he probably ruined their date but again, not his fault. Not entirely.

Prove him wrong? Only friends because of Thomas? All her fault? Why--- how she could have possibly upset him this much all this time to deserve these words was unbearable. She-- she did not think any of these things, none of them, and to hear them so candidly from him was difficult to swallow. How-- they weren't true, he misunderstood.

"Why are you saying these things!" Rose cried, releasing her hands down to her sides, feeling a deep burning sensation forming in her stomach. He-- didn't her understand how hurtful he was being? She would never do this to him. "Not-- not everything is my fault," she wailed, her legs, and therefore her feet, beginning to wobble. Her vision was hazy, but the need to at least, however pitifully, defend herself kept her stirred at attention.

"I don't--- I don't do that!" she sobbed loudly, flailing her arms as she spoke. "I don't--- I don't do those things!" What more could she say? What did he want from her? Was he mad? Was he jealous? It didn't--- Rose didn't understand where this was coming from. Why, why?

"It's--- it's not okay that you-- you--- treat me-- like--" Rose said randomly, swinging one arm to wrap around her own torso. Her tears continued to fall, and it proved difficult to say much else as her mind focused on that Kendall didn't see their friendship as they meaningful way she did. He was important to her. If he truly didn't, then... was she losing a friend tonight?

"You do, you just don't realize it." Kendall insisted, folding his arms across his chest. "And that's partly my fault because I've never said anything, but that doesn't change the fact that it happens."

He was about to demand to know what she meant by the way he treated her when the sinking feeling of regret was started to settle in his stomach. He was letting his anger get the better of him. He should have let things lie. He hardly had tact when sober, so confrontations after a few drinks was hardly a good idea. He never could control what he said when he was angry and had talent for using cutting words, such a lovely habit his father instilled in him.

He took a deep breath realizing what he really needed to do. Walk away, Broadmoor, just walk away. "I shouldn't have said anything tonight, this is hardly the place for this conversation. I'm going to go before this becomes something unsalvageable. You should go find Octavius, and I am going to go home to cool off. We can talk about this later, when we are both sober." Everything about walking away from Rose while she was crying felt wrong. Even if it was the right thing to do, so he waited until he spotted Octavius across the bar and made sure he was at least aware of where Rose was before turning to leave.
