Thomas
Billie twisted her fingers anxiously as she paced back and forth across the width of the stadium where she had shed both sweat and blood over the last year. Her eyes scanned her surroundings, taking it in like she had the first time she had stepped foot on the pitch, decked out in black and white. She hadn’t known a single person when she had first joined the league – she felt like something of an outcast, a feeling she had hoped would subside over time, but never did. She wasn’t necessarily an assertive person – she wasn’t the type to try and make a lot of friends, because she was just so awkward about just about everything. It was like she didn’t know how to just be normal around people. Every now and then she managed to fool people into believing she wasn’t as messed up as she actually was, and Thomas McCormack was one of the people she had managed to befriend.

True, their friendship had been based on a mutual physical need, but he was her teammate, and probably the only Magpie who she had made a true connection with. She had tried to talk to the others, but she just…she never knew what to say to them, or how to act.

She started gnawing on the corner of her thumbnail, now walking with one foot in front of the other as she balanced on the thin white line that surrounded the pitch, marking its parameters. She had arrived about 5 minutes after she had written to Thomas, knowing she would have to wait for him to arrive. She needed some time to clear her head. She wondered if he would even care, when she told him, but tried to push her pessimism to the side, and closed her eyes as she let the cool spring breeze brush across her face.

She breathed in, and then out, wondering if maybe she should have just let him find out when everyone else did instead of wasting his time….

Billie snorted at his words. “You have a point.” She looked away from him in order to rake her hair away from her eyes again, her weight shifting again from one foot to the other. She couldn’t just be standing there, she was too anxious to be still, and wanted to keep moving around. Her attention turned back to him when he spoke again. “Maybe there’s some sort of quota he needs to fill when it comes to being a pain in the ass.” Another small smile was offered, but it faded quickly enough in order for her to roll her lips under.

“Will you walk with me?”

She gestured towards the pitch, figuring that if they started walking along its borders, she could focus on her shoes as they walked instead of having to keep her eyes on him the whole time. There was definitely something about Thomas that made her feel…well, he made her feel something, but it was impossible to describe. There was definitely an attraction there, but she had never expected them to turn into anything more than what they were – friends, who in the past had a physical relationship that ended quite abruptly when he started hanging out with Samantha. Maybe he didn’t think of their friendship as being anything special, because they didn’t talk as much as friends probably should, but he was the only friend she had in the league. She didn’t want to lose that after she told him what she had to tell him, and that was why she was feeling so nervous as they started walking along the length of the pitch, her fingers twisting in the connecting pocket of her hooded sweatshirt.

“So um…I know I dragged you out here, so I’m sure you’re wondering why. I’d be wondering why, if I were you.” She turned to look at him, but then looked out ahead of her to pay attention to where she was going.

“I have something to tell you…something the rest of the team is going to find out about sooner or later, but I just…I don’t know, I wanted you to know first.” She took in a deep breath through her nose before releasing it as a sigh before she looked over at him again.

“Come next season, I um...I won't be playing for the Magpies anymore...”

Best to just rip off the bandaid, and deal with any questions that came after that.
