End of Season party! For the 3rd

Drystan did not usually consider himself a sore loser. He had experienced enough defeats in his career to understand that winning was sometimes as much luck as it was skill—the latter of which he had plenty, the former he was starting to doubt he had any. He would even go so far as to say this was one of the top seasons he'd ever played. Losing the Cup might not be such a hardship, in that light. But to lose to the team he considered the most unsportsmanlike in the League was just an insult to injury. To have lost to them for the third time in the season was, in his perfectly reasonable and justified opinion, grounds for murder.

But a lifetime sentence in Azkaban would leave behind a wife and three children who would likely be just fine without him, but he'd miss them. So mass murder was off the table for tonight, at the very least.

Press snapped pictures outside the admittedly-abandoned looking building of 23 High Street, and Drystan knew there were more inside. Entering the rundown lobby, by-passing the elevator with the out-of-order sign, they made their way up the long flight of stairs to the grand doors of the first floor landing and into the—holy Mer—

Of course, the invitation specified formal wear, but Drystan hadn't honestly been expecting a high-brow formal occasion from the Kestrels. It was a ballroom. There was emerald green positively everywhere. There was something that looked suspiciously like a string ensemble. A bar, where he fancied he would spend as much time as possible, was in the corner. Platters with hors d'oeuvres and glass flutes zoomed by. Having stopped moving, wearing a stupefied expression, Bess had to tug his arm to get him to continue his stride.

"Hell," he muttered, pulling a grim face at the ostentatious yet somehow tasteful décor. Lifting their linked hands, he kissed the back of hers while surveying the spectacle before him.

"Five minutes? Five minutes isn't too soon."

ooc: Quidditch players/personnel + their guests! BLACK TIE! Party is on the first floor in this cool but creepy rundown building. Have fun! :D

Mira craned her neck to get a better view, definitely needing visual conformation for this apparent "win" of his. Unfortunately, Derek's pick was indisputable; dates definitely trumped single persons and the fact that he knew them really just sealed the deal. Letting out a dramatic sigh, which was the most admitting of defeat he was going to get, Mira tipped her head slightly toward him.

"I suppose," she drawled, a creeping smile returning to her lips. That was rather better than her disorderly manager still attempting to fish in one of the many large drink bowls. There was always the next round... Mira leaned into Derek's side as she searched the crowd. What could possibly beat a quidditch player and a WWN star?

There! "Oh Merlin, him," Mira laughed, giving a small pointing motion to an old man sitting on top of one of a nearby tables, swinging his legs back and forth as he shook every passerby's hand with what could only be... animal calls? Those certainly could not be words of the English language, by the looks of his victim's faces. She smiled sweetly, pressing her lips together in an amused manner. Wanting to see Derek's face for this one, she took her eyes away for a couple of seconds, meanwhile leaving her finger pointing. When she looked back--- oh Merlin.

A jolt ran through her as she quickly dropped her hand, hoping he hadn't seen, or thought it was meant to be at him. Seth had appeared near that man, behind him, or next to him, what if he--- thinking it was for the best measure, Mira quickly turned in her spot, exposing her back to where she had been previously standing. Oh-- Derek's--- body was--- there. She shook her head and spun back, trying her best to appear calm.

"We should--- move," she said to him, already beginning to gently push Derek away from where they were.

It really just took a second to spot the person Mira had found—he was actually a bit hard to miss, despite being perhaps all of four feet. Full-on gawking at the tiny old wizard, his head fell back in a bout of fairly raucous laughter he was trying to contain. All right, he'd have to concede, drunk or not, this man won the prize—which had heretofore been undecided, but Derek was sure he could think of something good. Wanting to glance back, he was going to turn in that direction when he felt a tug from Mira to go the opposite direction.

Still not fully recovered from the sight, he laughed a little and noted a slightly pinched look to her face, knowing for a fact that had not been there a moment ago. "Wait, Mira," his amusement faded and he paused a little to gain full control of his voice, clearing his throat. "Are you—is everything all right?"

He didn't protest being nudged in a different direction, but looked over his shoulder confusedly, his concern growing. What happened?

Seth originally wasn't even going to come to this stupid party. He was just going to sit at home and eat cake and ice cream with Leanne while playing tea party, but Henry, his stupid agent that claimed to be his brother, ruin those plans. Said that he couldn't be hermit and miss such a major end of season Q.U.A.B.B.L.E event if he wanted W.Q.W. to keep its upward momentum.

So he begrudgingly put on his fancy dress robes and made his way to the stupid party like he was told. He was hoping that he could at least have Michal to hang out with for the night, but he brought a date leaving Seth to stand alone at the bar. This was, of course, after taking a few shots with him for moral support and sending him off to 'score his own bird to snog'.

Eventually Seth grew tired of the bar and after asking for another drink (this time a double so he wouldn't have to return anytime soon) and started making his way through the crowd. Perhaps he could find Odette to bother for old times sake. Which probably would have done if he hadn't been stopped in his tracks by the sight of Mira pointing at him.

She was the last person he expected to run into here. She didn't even like Quidditch. And weren't these events such a burden for her. Oh so terrible and awful. And with that stupid hitwizard of all people. Wasn't this a Quidditch event. He downed his drink as he planed his course of action. There was no way he was turning back now, after she had spotted him. He didn't have anything to hide. So what if he was alone.

Except halfway towards couple he realized he couldn't be seen alone. Not if she had a date. It was a stupid stupid plan, right until an old wizard just past Mira moved to reveal Arista Sykes. Perfect. He managed to pick up a flute of champagne from a passing waiter and catch the tail end of what ever his name was asking Mira if everything was alright as she tried to rush them away.

"Oh, she's just worried that I'm coming over here to ruin what I'm sure is a lovely date. But don't you worry," he said condescendingly, patting his hand on Derek's shoulder. "I'm not. Just on my way to find my own date."

His gaze flitted between the two of them before settling on Mira. "Not everything is all about you." he said snidely before taking the few more strides that separated them from Arista.

"Here's your drink, love." he said looping his free hand into the crook of her arm, pulling her from whatever conversation she was having with someone he didn't recognize. Hopefully, she would play along. They were getting along somewhat well after all, but just for good measure, he leaned forward to 'kiss' her cheek and whisper a quick 'I'll make it worth it to play along', because he really couldn't risk having champagne thrown in his face at that very moment.

He-- she-- should-- how--- what?

Such a mix of emotion simmered within her in from these last few moments, Mira wasn't even sure where to begin. She hadn't meant-- an honest mistake--- Seth would never acknowledge that. And he--- she couldn't help herself, as her mouth stayed slightly ajar, her head followed Seth to-- this girl, his date. Date? She bit her tongue, finding that Seth's parting words were settling much deeper now than they had initially stuck.

How--- rude! But... she stood hesitantly, caught between wanting to defend herself and the equal desire to not put her chaotic ex of a skeleton on display for Derek, and everyone else present. She chatted her teeth for a few moments as she thought, then shook her head. No, it was not worth it. This was possibly one of the last times she would spend with Derek, and she did not want to remember it something undesirable.

"He's drunk," she muttered, perhaps a bit too loudly, and turned away despite giving a lasting glance over her shoulder to study his 'date.' Mira did not recognize her--- maybe that was a good thing. "Sorry," she added in hastily, hoping Seth hadn't offended Derek too much.

Arista had been having a rather lovely time. Excepting that this entire affair was rubbing salt in a gaping and festering wound that stemmed from the Pride having had an overall abysmal season, and that she was here with her captain who was conducting an affair with a married team alumna and was essentially non-verbally asking Arista to be a beard of sorts, this was possibly the most fun she'd had at a party the whole playing year. She even felt a modicum of good will toward their hosts of the evening, being that the Kestrels had decimated the United, so her offense was much less than it could have been.

"Oh yes, I find being the Comet Trading Company girl to be a very rewarding experience," Arista was saying, smilingly charmingly at one of the junior heads of Q.U.A.B.B.L.E. and tossing her hair. "Not many people realize that—"

Something grabbed her arm, hard. Letting out what she was sure was an undainty squeak, she stumbled in the direction she was being yanked, looking up at Seth Wadcock and feeling her brow pull into the V-shape his mere presence generally presented her. Every time she thought he wasn't an insufferable ass, he did something to prove her very wrong.

"What–" she began to hiss, whe his head swooped in next to hers and he was hissing right back in her ear. Glancing confusedly down at the glass, then him (she assumed he had had several glasses before presenting her with one—love?"). It wasn't until she saw the direction he was glancing in that she took in the couple standing across from them, the girl with her back to them, the man half-facing her, half them, a look of concern on his face.

Comprehension dawned on her face and she smoothed the crease in her brow, giving Seth a look of such saccharine sweetness, she hoped it gave him tooth decay. It seemed, she thought dully, that the only reason anybody should want to date her was because they couldn't be with the person they really wanted at the time. "Just what I wanted. How sweet." She batted her eyelashes at him and added, "If belatedly so."

Derek's eyes darted between Wadcock and Mira, recalling both her and Vinny mentioning something about her mad former boyfriend. Dismissing Seth and his date entirely after winging a brow at them, he turned more fully toward Mira. His hand slid to the small of her back in a show of concern, not possession, and he leaned his head down toward her. "Hey, it's all right. Is it—do you want to go?"

Seth grinned brightly as Arista's face relaxed and she took the glass from him. "Well, I got held up for a moment." he said his grin settling down in a smirk. His gaze flicked over his shoulder for a moment, trying to figure out if Mira was just going to move along with her date or decide it was worth making a scene.

Which it wasn't, at all. Seth was slowing moving on from that whole disaster of a break up with the help of Michal and his brother. Who both have taken to glaring at him any time he bothered to mention the name.

"Dance with me?" he ask charmingly, boldly (with the help of the amount of alcohol he had consumed) letting his hand slipping down to rest on Arista's hip.

What was wrong with her? She knew that Seth wanted her to be watching, she knew he wanted her to upset, and there yet here she was, letting him-- control her like some--- puppet! What had happened to-- who in their right might--- insufferable-- jealous--- drunken-- prat! If gazes could kill.... even if she wanted to, Mira wouldn't have been able to subdue her seething look directed toward Seth and his date.

Of course she had turned back--- she didn't want to care, she really just-- wanted to be done with it, but it was so frustrating! He was frustrating! Why was Seth so set on torturing her? He had broken up with her! Her thoughts continued to sour until Derek pulled her back.

Mira blinked, shifting to look up at him. She pressed her lips together in an annoyed, albeit guilty manner. That... would be best, to leave. She could swallow--- her anger. For the time being. But if he did anything else---! Yes, that resolution would sustain her. Beginning to nod, she pressed one of her hands to her forehead.

"Just from here," she muttered miserably, dropping her head as she leaned toward him instinctively for support. Vengeful exs sucked.

Derek frowned as he looked over his shoulder at Wadcock, who now had a showy grip on his date. He didn't really feel the urge to call him out or make a scene—it didn't seem worth it, and he had a feeling it would embarrass Mira more than it would earn her favour. Not to mention the fact that he was supposed to uphold keeping the peace, not intentionally disturb it, even if he was off the clock.

Even if he really, really hated being slapped on the shoulder.

"Sounds good," he said easily, trying to diffuse the situation. That had never been his forte. He considered himself an affable, easy-going sort in school, but if someone deliberately flouted his principles or continued to bait him, he was more than happy to end the fight. Sometimes start one, when it meant helping the people he cared about. After training as a Hit-wizard, he tried to model himself after Dimitri, who was just as hot-headed as he was, but had the advantage of age and experience to temper him. He might even have gotten there, but after everything went all to hell, he itched for the fight. Not even to make a point, not for any sense of misconstrued justice, but just to be destructive.

Perhaps he was finding his stride again.

"The—erm, pink and fizzy drinks seem to be the real star of the evening?" he offered, his arm tightening slightly around her as he scanning the room for a tray or what corner the bar was in.

Arista stared at the girl's rather imposing date, wondering at the dynamics of this old relationship. From Seth's rather drunken and belligerent attitude, she thought the woman he was trying to show Arista off to must have broken up with him in a bitter, callous way. But from this other witch's reaction, she was suddenly unsure.

And suddenly very aware of Seth's hand on her hip.

Still smiling brightly, she pushed the hand holding her glass to his chest to stay him and matter-of-factly said, "I can't stand dancing." Her gaze darted back to the couple whose backs were now turned on them, and allowed her face to relax for a minute as she drilled a finger into his chest and hissed, "And by being within a foot of you, I don't think I'm all right to Apparate!"

"That is quite a shame, as I am a fabulous dancer." Seth said pleasantly. "And your concern is touching, is that your way of offering to take me home, just to make sure I get there safely." he said suggestively, taking the hand that she was using to poke him in the chest and pulling it up to kiss it.

And when he glanced over to Mira, he caught he eye one more time as she was walking away saying something to Darius or what ever his name was. Seth smirked in satisfaction catching the tail end of the furious look she was sending his way. Even though it probably shouldn't at all, the fact that he could still get under her skin made him feel a bit better and worth ruining what ever good standing he had built with Arista. Well it seem that way at the moment, he would probably feel differently once sober.

He waved his fingers at her before calling out "Have a wonderful evening." in a tone that clearly suggested that he would be having a grand evening of his own. He turned his attention back to Arista with a smile, and because it seemed like a perfectly reasonable idea at the time, he leaned over and gave her a quick kiss just at the corner of her mouth in a fashion that oozed of lovey-dovey and not of a quick hook up.

A strangled screech fought to release itself from her throat, but Arista was honestly too paralyzed to do even that. "You—" she gestured violently with the hand that was unfortunately holding the glass Seth had pressed into her hand moments before this unfortunate encounter began, upending its contents on Seth and herself (mostly on Seth).

"You—they—they weren't even looking!" she hissed, punching him in the arm with more vigor than was strictly ladylike for a woman to reprimand a man with. Perhaps she'd gone along with the ruse, WHICH by the way, he had not even bothered to explain to her, but simply pulled her along and assumed she'd go along with it (which she had, for the most part), but she that did not mean she was party to any kissing or any such nonsense happening!

Arista threw her hands up disgustedly, "I—you—I cannot deal with you!" and all but wrenched herself away from Seth's vicinity. Fine. Her other fake date had been scores better, at any rate. Miles was too busy mooning after a married piranha of a witch to try and grope her.

"I hope you splinch yourself or—get stuck in the Floo!" she tossed hotly over her shoulder, sparing just one vain moment to wish her hair was down and glorious curled so she could really disdainfully toss that over her shoulder. Fake-smiling brightly, she shoved a Cannon out of the way and snarled beatifically at the stuttered reproach, wondering how long it would take her to talk Miles into leaving now.
