CHRISTMAS PARTY [BACKDATED TO 23RD]

After making a quick stop to check on the children upstairs (Anthony and Elijah looked so precious), Mackenzie continued on her normal perimeter around the party. Ensuring there was enough food and drink for everyone was extremely important, as well as making sure that no-one was left standing by themselves too long. That would hardly promote good review upon later reminiscing among their guests. But luckily, neither of these issues had seem to come up yet, leaving her with little host responsibilities.

So that left Mackenzie practically purring, as she had been for most of the night. The party could not be going better. The house looked beautiful thanks to her near-obsessive decorating, Christmas spirit was in full swing, and everyone looked like they were truly enjoying themselves. Nothing could go wrong, absolutely nothing, making Mackenzie feel her happiest in what seemed like a very long time. This had been a very good idea! Maybe if things continued like this, she could convince Sebastian to make this their annual holiday tradition...

Couldn't be too careful, though. Just for good measure, Mackenzie picked a few of her husband's favorite hors d'oeuvres as they passed by above, placing them on a plate. Finding him was easy; ever since she had gotten back, Sebastian had replaced her shadow. Not in a bad or stifling way, but in more of a supporting kind of way. She knew he was worried.

"I have a present for you," she smiled, producing the plate with one hand as the other wrapped around his open arm.

Her new year's resolution, Graciela had decided, was to ask Edward out for some tea. Except it would be more than just the tea they'd shared before, when discussing her books and future plans for the tour or whatever Calliope was interested in doing, it was going to be a tea that took place at night, at a restaurant.

Where she probably wasn't going to order any tea at all.

She should probably specify this resolution, seeing as just asking to meet for tea could lead her back to where she started; Edward seeing her as a friend and herself having this non-reciprocated crush on this very clueless man. Things had gotten better, of course---with the end of the war, with the holidays, it was easier for Graciela to ignore the nagging feelings she had for Edward because she was so distracted with everything. Alex was home for the holidays to be with Zacharias, so that nagged at her---actually, he was here, at the party, and it was the first time they'd been in the same room together outside of their--her house.

It was why Graciela was making a beeline toward the kitchen, or at least the back of the house. Alex was catching up with his old schoolmates toward the entrance, and she had no desire to hear him laugh; it was around the holidays last year that their fighting and distance had truly began. Graciela let out a breath and picked at the plates of wonderfully prepared food that were refilling themselves with every pluck of her fingers. Maybe she could just hide out here all night, until the secret Santa gifts were presented.

There might have been a bit too many drinks accessible to Edward during the night, and because of that, he definitely felt much lighter than usual. It was such a relaxing feeling! Suddenly, everything was worth a big smile and, not to mention, much more amusing.

Of course, Edward had been drunk before, it was just too far and in between for him to realize it in that second. That was probably for the better though-- or else he would have been horrified with his rather... lax self.

Taking a deep breath, Edward swung backward to pick up a lost pig-in-a-blanket on the ground. While coming back up to regular stature, he spotted a familiar face. Putting the plate in his hands on a nearby table, he quickly made his way over to her.

"Graciela!" he smiled, tapping her on the shoulder as he approached her from behind. "I didn't know you were here, I hadn't seen you!"

She jumped, having thought she had found a place of solitude away from the party and---of course it was Edward. Graciela's face flushed deeply; he looked very handsome and he was smiling so brightly that it excited her. Could he be that excited to see her, or was he in good spirits because of the party? Maybe both? Maybe he had too much to drink? The thoughts raced through her head quickly and Graciela forced herself not to play with her hair, like she normally did when nervous. Lately, Edward made her quite nervous.

---ay, especially now. Her ex-husband was just beyond the door of the kitchen, and the man she was currently secretly pining for was smiling stupidly at her within a very close proximity. What if Alex came in here and saw the two of them, alone in the kitchen? They were not doing anything, even though the thought of doing something made her face flush even deeper and---

"Here I am!" she let out weakly, putting her hands up with a shaky smile. Graciela let her shoulders relax and managed a more natural smile toward Edward. If anything, he was a very good friend, and she should be happy to see him so close to the holidays. "You are having fun, yes?"

Ralph!

Miranda was sure she'd never get tired of showing off her engagement ring. Sure, she'd had it for months now, and sure, she and Ralph had already been married---it'll be two months on the first day of the next year. But, really. Whenever someone she hadn't seen in a while popped up in the crowd of party goers, there was a loud shriek of joy, hugs, and then a quick, 'Let me see the ring!'

And of course she did, because she loved her engagement ring just as much as she loved Ralph, her husband.

The excitement of it still had not worn off, not in the slightest. It helped that only Greta knew about their eloping (they had to tell her, if Miranda was to convince her to let Ralph move in with them until they could afford a flat on their own). Her mother was ridiculously excited to have a wedding to plan, and her brothers were all up in arms about everything---it was just amazing, fantastic really, and it was so easy to forget how terrible of a year it had been right up until October 31st.

...it was also very easy to remember how terrible of a year it had been, and Miranda excused herself from a conversation consisting of the now common phrase, 'the last time I saw the Potters---' She moved through the crowd and easily found Ralph, who seemed to be enjoying all of his time out in public. Miranda slid her arms around him from behind,

"Can I steal him away?" she asked, craning her neck around his side to wink at the person Ralph had been talking to.

Being out in public was so great. Ralph had forgotten how awesome it was just to be able to... go to a party and not have to worry about someone stabbing him in the back. Literally. Actually, he was surprised Walden hadn't attempted that, now that he thought about it. Well, that chance was lost, so luckily neither of them would be able to find out the outcome of.

Anyway, Ralph couldn't be happier. He was a sociable person at heart, making this party more than worthwhile; half the people here were still under the impression that he had died two years ago in a house fire, so that left a lot of room for catching up. Well, at least with the non-Order members in attendance. Ralph had just been in the middle of talking about his studies at University with Sebastian when he felt some wrap their hands around him behind his back.

Ralph knew who he hoped that would be.

A laugh escaped him as he shook his head, sending an apologetic look to Sebastian (who in turn waved Ralph off while walking away) before carefully turning his full attention to Miranda.

He took her hands in his, pulling them close to his face. "You better make this quick, I'm in high demand tonight," Ralph spoke in a joking manner, his lips pulling to create a wide smile.

Miranda let out a string of giggles, feeling like a school girl and a grown woman all at once. Ralph's teasing reminded her of their flirty corridor time at Hogwarts, and as he kissed her hands she caught sight of her engagement woman and everything seemed to fall in place. They were married, getting married is what everyone else thought---it was as if they'd finally finished the race. They'd reached the goal of the long, twisting and ridiculously hard journey their relationship had been taken on. And they'd won! They were together and stupidly happy about it.

She hoped this feeling never faded. Greta called it the honeymoon phase of the marriage, but Miranda decided that since they technically never went on a honeymoon, they would be allowed to live in his mindset for as long as they could and desired. Miranda stepped closer to Ralph and grinned up at him. So handsome, her husband was.

"Don't they know that I've staked my claim in Frobisher stock?" she said in an amused tone, eyebrows going high. Miranda would like to see someone try to take Ralph out of her grasp once she had a hold of him. Her face softened, "Are you having a good time?"

NOAH

2010-12-29 05:00 am UTC (link)
Odette fiddled with the top of her drink, running her finger along its edge as she barely hung onto the words from the person speaking in front of her. For the past two weeks she had been distracted, her thoughts always preoccupied with something else--- but it wasn't her fault she was worried! Worried about Noah.

Shaking her head, Odette excused herself from the conversation on the premise of needing another drink. She just--- could never image Noah seriously depressed, let alone---- hurting himself because of it. What Noël had told her hit Odette hard, with her trying to understand why he would do it, and why he never told her or--- anything. It just--- she had no idea.

And that bothered her. It bothered her greatly. She felt like--- like that was a big part of him she had no idea about, not one clue. Realizing this, Odette decided now would be the time to address this. It was hardly appropriate for where they were, but since Noël had told her, Odette knew she wouldn't be able to shake her thoughts from it until it was addressed. She just couldn't--- wait for him to tell her anymore.

Taking a long finishing drink from her her champagne as she walked, Odette mentally prepared herself. Poking a nest of hornets was no easy task; liquid strength was essential. Approaching Noah from his front, she sent a small smile before speaking.

"I need to talk to you about something," Odette spoke, managing to corner him at the edge of the room as near one of the food.

Noah could never really get into the swing of the holidays. When he was younger, he'd always had Martin or Noël to fight for attention with, and then when it was time to unwrap the toys, his siblings' presents whizzed or glittered while his were clunky and mechanical. It was what he wanted, but they never seemed to impress anyone but himself. Well, no. His mother had always been very interested in his trinkets, asking him how the muggle things she spent days searching for worked. Noah took great care to explain each instrument and would only let his mum use them, besides himself.

He rubbed his head, having been staring out the window of the house for who knew how long. The holidays should really be taking on a new meaning now, shouldn't they? He was a married man, he had children, things should be happy. They would be, he'd play happy for the kids on Christmas, and Odette---Merlin, he really hoped he impressed her with her present, it was their first Christmas as husband and wife and---

Her near sudden appearance slightly startled him and Noah shook away his thoughts, smiling back at her. His grin faded however at her words and Noah's face took on a bit of concern.

"What's the matter?" he asked, drawing near and touching her elbow gently.

Now that she had his attention, Odette felt herself falter. Balancing one foot on the heel of her shoe and rubbing the other into the ground, she toyed with the idea of simply making out with Noah now to postpone this whole plan until later. Maybe--- maybe she should wait until after the holidays were over to address this. It was so close to Christmas, and she didn't want to trigger anything... this was their first Christmas together together, after all, and Anna's very first! Would she be ruining it by doing this?

But there was potential of ruining Christmas Day if she let this fester more than it already had. Odette just--- had to know why. And that--- she wanted him to know that she supported him, and that he could talk to her about anything. It was-- it made her feel guilty, and sad, that he thought he couldn't, or didn't even want to. Did that mean she was a bad wife? A bad person? She didn't know what to do.

Taking a deep breath, Odette closed her eyes for a brief moment. Why did finding the right words always seem so hard? Before, she would just say the first thing that popped to mind. But she couldn't do that now, Noah meant much more to her than that.

"I just---" she started, then began to shake her head. No, no there were too many people here. Besides, Odette hardly doubted Noah's friend would enjoy them making a scene at their own party. Grabbing his hand, Odette pulled Noah across and out the room, eventually to a much more private area outside.

Before speaking again, Odette placed Noah carefully in front of her, watching his face as she took another deep breath of stale air. "I just want to talk about what--- happened to you around this time in school." If the situation hadn't been so severe, Odette would have been very proud of herself for such a gentle entry into the topic.

It wasn't the brisk air that made his blood run cold. Noah actually felt like he'd been struck with some sort of freezing curse because--how did she know about that? He couldn't even try to pull out of her grasp and just stared at Odette as if she had three heads. How did she know?

As quickly as the blood rushed from his face, he flushed once again, growing hot with confusion and guilt and embarrassment. Who could have told her? Noah's mind flitted to the few people who knew about his attempt to take his own life back at Hogwarts. His parents. Siblings. Drystan Fawcett--no, there would be no reason for Drystan to have spilled the information now. Drystan had been reminded of the event over a year ago and hadn't said a word, so---Noah blinked rapidly, figuring it out.

"Noël told you?" He didn't know how he knew it was his sister, but after eliminating Drystan, it had to go back to his sister. He knew her concern for his well-being completely overwhelmed her at points, and Noah had noticed that she hadn't approached him about it like she usually does around this time. He had dismissed it as his twin being busy with her newborn, but---she had her ways.

Noah let out a quick breath from his nose, suddenly unable to look Odette in the eye. How could it be so hot in the middle of December?

"What do you want to know?" he muttered.

She suddenly felt very awkward, very intrusive the moment Noah understood what she was talking about. After all, Hogwarts had been so long ago-- an almost completely different life for her, so was it right to drag him back to a place that was different to now? Was she just being selfish? She couldn't deny she hadn't felt hurt when Noël told her; Odette felt like she had painstakingly divulged every skeleton in her closet to him, so why wouldn't he tell her this?

Bitting her lip, Odette fidgeting uncomfortably in his gaze. Or lack there of. This had been a bad idea, a very bad idea. Not right. She didn't want to make him feel this way, but--- it worried her. She didn't know Noah back then. Was it different? Was there a difference? Or was it like the way he was now, and then just one seemingly random day...

Odette shook her head, blinking quickly as her fingers itched to reach for him. "I don't--" she started, then cut herself off. It was very important he understood where this was coming from. "Why didn't you tell me?" Odette spoke again, her voice much softer with her gaze on their feet.

He hadn't felt like this in quite some time. He felt like---everyone in the room was staring at him, wondering why he was so weird and strange, what was he doing with that gorgeous woman because a bloke like him could never win her over and---Noah kept his eyes ducked, chin low as everything began to feel hot again. He was almost glad that Odette had simply asked why he hadn't told her, because that was an easy question to answer.

Noah choked out a cough, shrugging. He wasn't going to defend himself, he knew it was something he should have told Odette, but had there ever been a moment appropriate enough for him to slip in, 'Hey, I tried to kill myself when I was fifteen,'? Noah hadn't prodded for Odette to let the skeletons out of her closet, they'd all just come rampaging to the forefront of their relationship. He wasn't one for feelings and emotions and sharing like his twin sister was, so---this was far more overwhelming than he could possibly handle.

"What could I have said?" he let out, feeling his eyes prick with tears of shame and discomfort. Noah looked up at her, shaking his head and unable to keep his gaze on her. His eyes shot up to the ceiling, feeling hot all over but unable to pull away from her. He had to do this, didn't he? "It was the most--embarrassing, shameful---it's not something I'm proud of--"

Her face produced an uncontrollable frown as Noah began to struggle in front of her. She knew, Odette knew this would be difficult, and half of her expected Noah to become angry with her for bringing up such a painful experience, but--- this was important. They had never been good at sharing their feelings, being overly emotional or even understanding each other sometimes, but she had always thought that deep down, the things that mattered were clear between them. So this-- it made her feel sad and scared, and ignorant.

So ignorant.

"I'm sorry," Odette blurted as her thoughts turned more and more to Noah. She bit her lip again, unsure of how to tactfully put to rest the only burning question left in her mind. He could become offended, and upset. He would think she knew nothing about him or didn't care to. But she had to ask, had to know. She took his discomfort as a sign, and figured quickly she would need to latch onto him for either of them to continue.

Unable to keep herself from his touch anymore, Odette swiftly nestled herself into his chest, wrapping her arms around Noah for a tight hug. Burying her face into the side of his neck, she took a few moments before speaking again.

"I love you," she prefaced, only turning her head slightly so he could hear. Odette took another breath, breathing heavily before continuing. "I just--- need to know that you don't--- still feel like that now" Odette spoke in such a small voice, it was almost unrecognizable. She just felt so tiny, so stupid for having no idea about this, it was like her body was shrinking where she stood. Noah had become so important to her that experiencing another episode like the one in August was simply something she knew she could endure. And she just---- he needed to know that.

Julie stood off in the corner trying her best not to scowl at everyone passing by. She could not believe she let Brand talk her into coming to the party. She wanted to be at home, with her kids.

So she stood in the corner eating. That was another thing, she was pregnant again. Yes, she loved her husband a whole lot. And yes, she lots and lots of babies, but she just had a baby. A baby whose announcement hadn't even gone out yet because it had been lost in the post. Was it to much to ask for at least six months of none pregnancy. Even three.

When Brand finally came back around from mingling she would tell him. He'd be ecstatic, and really, she would be too. Once she made herself look at it as another kid to spoil instead of another nine months pregnant. Next time there was going to be at least a year.

Sarah

Brier wasn't a fan of huge parties with people he didn't know. In his experience they lead to a lot of drinking, not a lot of remembering and a loss of virginity in a manner of different ways. Given all the people and children that were here, Brier didn't actually think that something like that would happen, but it still made him feel a little uneasy. There were quite a lot of people and maybe he was just paranoid, a feeling that was difficult to shake. Though he had his wife (something that still shocked him a little) and his three-and-a-half year-old son so everything shouldn't have been that bad.

Rory was tucked in on his shoulder, being shy with all of the people and Brier had to adjust to hold him on his hip a little and gave Sarah a knowing look as the boy glanced up and then hid his face again. "He'll get better soon, there's just a lot of people and noise. Maybe if we find someone he goes to daycare with, he might recognize them?"

"S'alright!" Sarah said happily, just glad to be out and about with her husband and son. She didn't care if Berkeley made it a point to call Rory her step-son, because to her, it was as if the boy had come from her own womb! Which was really funny, because he wasn't even Brier's, biologically!

What a right trio, they were!

Sarah bent, her heels making her a bit taller so that checking out Rory's mood was a little difficult. Her eyes caught the boy's, and she grinned immediately, "Hey you! Do you want to see some magic?"

She took Rory's hand, leaving him in Brier's grasp, and pulled them toward the Christmas tree which was spectacularly decorated. The tree Sarah and Rory had set up one afternoon while Brier was at work (eh! She took random days off now, to pick up Rory early and have some fun---) looked ready to keel over and die with all the ornaments and decorations. This tree was meticulous in its design, and Sarah wasted no time in pointing out the floating orbs and the tiny sparkles that were drifting about its branches.

"Isn't it beautiful?" she asked Rory, her eyes flitting over his head to glance at Brier. While ninety-six percent of her was completely and perfectly content with spending the night with Rory, that other four percent (okay, maybe it was a bit bigger than four percent, but---) wished for an evening just for her and her husband. They'd been married for nearly two months now and while she was quite easy to entertain (just ask the amount of finger painting that had been done in Rory's room since their eloping) it would be really nice to have a grown up night with Brier.

"Things are always better when they sparkle," Sarah said sagely to Rory, whose eyes are as wide as saucers, trying to capture all of the magic on the tree.

Rory had turned to see the tree, sitting in Brier's arms and leaning against him as he spied the tree. Brier wished he'd had a camera to catch the little boy's face, "Isn't mum good like that? Finds you something so pretty to look at, but watch this," Brier said, slipping his wand out of his sleeve and tapping it on one of the ornaments. They had some ornaments at home, but nothing this fancy and although everything was set up he picked out one of the drummer boy and set it in motion as it was hanging from the branch. Even though Rory had grown up with magic all around so far, it was easy to entertain little boys with it.

Leaning forward, Rory pointed it out to Sarah with a grin and his quiet chatter. Although shy, Brier and Sarah had done a good job not baby talking the boy, so he was quiet but rather intelligent and observant. Brier gave his wife a grin over Rory's head but in his moment of inattention, Rory nearly took a headdive into the tree. "Woah there, look with your eyes not your hands," Brier laughed moving to set the boy down but keeping a hold on his hand. "Maybe something to play with?" Brier glanced at Sarah's purse, knowing she had to have something in there, she always had something. "I don't really see any other kids around, maybe we weren't supposed to bring him?" he asked with a shy look around the room. Maybe the invitation had been just a nice gesture or something. He couldn't really remember any parties his parents had taken him to, most of them were spent with house-elves back home with his brother and sister.

Automatically, Sarah's hand dug into her purse and she pulled out the Unstoppable Top, which spun on the floor for an infinite amount of time until it was touched by the one who started it up. Rory could watch it spin for hours, or at least have it within his line of vision while he played with other toys. Sometimes Sarah started the top before the boy went down for a nap, and she would spot him waking up for just a second or to, locate the top, and then fall back asleep. She liked to think of it as a comforting sort of toy, letting Rory know that she hadn't left or taken it away.

It was really great, being part of a kid's life that way. It had taken Sarah no time to get used to being called mum, because she already loved Rory enough for like---twelve mums.

She was about to start it up when it seemed like a little parade of children came marching down the stairs, led by Sebastian and his two boys. They had little sparklers and noise makers, laughing and shrieking with delight. Rory and Sarah both turned their heads toward Brier with nearly identical, 'please please please?' expressions at the sight of the parade.

Bertram!

It was disappointing, when the cold air refused to hit her face when Bianca slipped out the back door of the Goldstein's home. There must be some sort of warming spell, so the guests could mingle outside.

She'd needed an escape from the party the moment she spotted Bertram mingling with the crowd. They had been...distant. Bianca wouldn't say things had been terrible, but she hadn't put forth much effort of anything concerning Bertram. Which was bad, which went against everything that she'd told him during their big fight, but Bianca had decided something and wasn't going to turn her back on things.

She was going to be a mother, so no matter what happened, or went on with Bertram, her baby boy was first, and that was that. She'd picked out a flat near by her current one with Mira and had signed the lease for it two weeks ago. The move had been slow, but Bianca finally felt like she was making some progress on this big life-altering journey she was on. No help from Bertram, of course, but she didn't need him.

Bianca had decided she didn't need anyone years ago, and dropped to a bench near a small pond in front of the house with a long exhale. Seeing the cloud of cold air form eased her thoughts and she pulled the shawl tighter around her shoulders.

It just figured that even though he was sure - he had needed to be sure -- that Bianca was going to be different, things seemed to be going toward the inevitable spiral of horror that they always did. She had told him that she'd be there for him when he was ready to talk, but apparently that had been something of an exaggeration. Maybe he deserved to be ignored when he was struggling with something big, and if she had just told him that she was going to be just like every other girl that he'd dated and really mean 'I'm going to be there for you after you finally tell me what's wrong', he might have been over her by now.

That was a lie, but nobody else needed to know it. He frowned when he saw Bianca step outside and quickly moved to follow her, sliding out the back door and crossing his arms over his chest. He hovered near the bench and jerked his robes a little tighter around him.

"So the plan is to just avoid me now, then? You could at least have informed me of that. I wouldn't have bothered to show up here and inconvenience you if that was the case."

"You've been doing a fine job of that yourself," Bianca immediately shot back, not losing her composure. After the surge of hormones the first few months of pregnancy had brought her, Bianca was now at a very stable state when it came to her emotions. She was back to being the sensible, no-nonsense hitwizard she'd become after Hogwarts, and Bertram Aubrey was not going to make her act like some fool any longer.

Except there was that nagging feeling called love that reminded her to give the bloke a chance. He had issues, he was trying to sort them out, but that didn't mean he was allowed to behave like a chicken and not do anything about---anything! How long was she supposed to wait? How long could she just sit idly by as he figured out if he was capable of being in this relationship with her and the baby? Or---whatever it was that was bothering him!

Because of course, he hadn't told her what it was. There was only so much a girl could take before she finally stopped being patient and supportive. How was Bianca supposed to be supportive when she didn't know what she was supposed to support? Maybe she was being too hard on him, but hell! He was twenty years old, in the wizarding world that was nearly ancient when it came to marriage and children so---

Bianca ruffled and crossed her arms and legs even tighter, looking toward the pond, "I just needed some air."

Like every other girl eventually did, he thought. Sure, many times he was the one driving them away, but this time -- this time he was trying, or at least he thought he was -- and things were turning out just the same.

"Do you actually think I'm that stupid? I mean, I know I can act like a bloody idiot sometimes, but I can tell when a girl's avoiding me." Because it wasn't an uncommon thing to have happen to him. "Having you more or less not deem it necessary to say more than a few words to me doesn't make me feel like 'opening up', shockingly enough." Bertram frowned. Emmeline thought he should just tell Bianca about things, but he couldn't very well do it in front of anyone else and he hadn't been in a sharing mood since Christmas.

Bianca's cold expression dropped into a glare as she turned back to look at Bertram, "Excuse me? You said you wanted time, so I've been giving you time! I haven't---split."

The word hit her hard but Bianca forced herself to seemingly remain unaffected by it. She hadn't split. She had just---been going on with her life while he figured out his. Was that the wrong thing to do? She should have been more forceful with helping Bertram out even though he'd asked her for time? Did time equal space? Why was this turning into some crazy confusing formula?

Bianca uncrossed her legs and planted her shoes into the ground. Her feet were killing her, but Mira and her mother had insisted that she needed to wear heels and not completely succumb to being comfortable in her present state. Such lovely family, she had.

"You didn't want to talk to me, so I didn't make you talk," Bianca snapped, shaking her head, "You didn't want my help so I figured you were trying to get your act together by yourself."

"And if I had done the same to you, I'm pretty sure you'd claim I was ignoring you. There's a difference between not wanting to talk to you about something that's hard to talk about and not wanting to talk to you at all." Hormones or not, that was a bit how he felt right now.

This party and the rest of the holidays had just served to remind him that yes -- maybe he wasn't ready to up and move out with Bianca just because she was pregnant, he wanted to make sure it was because he was in love with her. "It's hard to believe someone's going to support you when you tell them something important if they can't even stand to talk to you when you're not ready yet." And part of that might've been his trying to give himself some space, but that wasn't all of it, right?

Bianca had been angry at Bertram, but this was---angry. This was ready to pull out her wand and threaten him kind of angry. She stood up, pointing a stiff finger at him, "If you think I'd push you away if you came to me Bertram, you are sorely mistaken!"

Maybe she should have been more comforting but---no! She was the one in the fragile state, she was the one that had confessed her love to him, she was the one that had called him back when he'd been at the door, ready to leave, so why should she be the one that has to fix things? She'd already shown him that she was willing to make sacrifices in this relationship, he was the one that---

"Don't you dare question me about---support!" Bianca said tersely, trying to keep her voice down but it was hard. Did he not realize how much she was giving up, and would have to give up, for this baby? For him? Why do you think there were so few female hitwizards? "You're the one that was ready to leave, you're the one that can't trust the bloody mother of your child! What the hell do you want from me? I can't do everything in this relationship, Bertram!"

Well, was it his fault that he didn't know how to go about this sort of thing with girls? He'd been planning to strike up the nerves to tell her what was going on with him, what the problem was with him supporting his mother the way he had quietly been doing -- but he was quickly losing steam. He frowned again.

"You don't trust me either, Bianca. Or at least, you don't trust me to be ready for anything before what you deem is 'too late'. I'd love to write you out a schedule for how the rest of our lives are going to go, but I can't do that." Even if sometimes he wanted to. She was doing a pretty good job of pushing him away right now, though, and he didn't have the energy to stop it right now.

"Right, sorry. I'm going to go back to the party now, and I'll make sure and inform you of when I'm ready to talk so that you can stop pushing me away. Sound good?"

"I didn't---" She started to apologize, or at least retract some words, but he was already turning away from her and back to the party. Bianca felt the slight pang of guilt slip from her pores and her shoulders tightened immediately.

She now turned completely away from him and toward the pond, crossing her arms and shaking her head. This was great, brilliant, even. He was just going to walk away because he couldn't handle an argument, a fight. How had he made it through Slytherin with that sort of attitude? Bianca knew his sexual triumphs were just talk and gossip for the most part, so how the hell had Bertram Aubrey not been eaten alive?

"Right, leave." Bianca shook her head in disgust. He was really pathetic, right now. "Just like you wanted to before."

Frank!

Emmeline couldn't stand it, she was nearly bursting at the seams. Today had been one of the best days she'd ever had, it was just---amazing. Everything was perfect. Everyone looked perfect! Everyone was smiling and having fun, Mackenzie made sure to give her some duties, which meant she was part of a special unit of party planners and---Caradoc had not so subtly suggested that they find a place to live. Together, away from England so that he wouldn't have to be stuck in a house all day.

He wanted to move away with her, and the excitement that sentiment brought was the reason why she was a bit late at arriving to the party, and why her hair would just not stay in place after being so amazingly disheveled. They had to celebrate this momentous decision in an appropriate fashion, of course.

In all honesty, Emmeline was keen to move tomorrow. She could do it tomorrow if Caradoc wanted, if they could plan, but she was quickly reminded that while most of her ties to England had been severed, one very strong bond still remained. Emmeline would never be able to up and leave Frank behind without any notice. Firstly because he'd probably track her down and kill her for it, but mostly because he was the brother she never had, and she wouldn't dare hurt him that way.

So, while telling him that she was quite sure she was moving across the Atlantic Ocean was something that would not settle nicely with Frank, bringing up the secret that Caradoc was alive and well and had been living in her childhood home for the past few months might actually make the move seem like no big deal at all.

But how to tell him and not have him flip out completely, or even better, actually believe her? Emmeline realized that there was no sure fire way to go about this, so when Frank had detached himself from Alice's side, she swung her arm under his and began to drag him up the stairs, where the coats of the guests were floating up in an orderly manner to be magically hung in an ever-expansive closet Mackenzie had arranged. She really had thought of everything.

"So---you know how much I love you, right?" Emmeline said cheekily, turning to Frank and crossing her arms over her chest, making sure that they were out of ear shot. The party was roaring downstairs, however, so Emmeline knew they were safe.

Despite only being the true parent of a one-year old, Frank felt like he and Alice had a lot of experience dealing familial bonds and mock children. They basically had unofficially adopted Ralph for the past three years, and through him Miranda, taking the count up to three. And of course, there had always been Emmeline. She would always be the little sister he never had, making it easy to be the authoritative figure in her life.

So when he heard Emmeline say 'you know how much I love you, right?', Frank couldn't help but let out a disgruntled sigh. What was she up to now? He almost didn't want to know. Almost. But after looking out for his four collectively children for so long now, it really wasn't an option; he was far too invested in their lives to turn down anything.

"I'm not going to like what you're going to say, am I?" he responded with a dubious look. This was probably about this new boyfriend of hers, wasn't it? While Frank did enjoy hearing that Emmeline's life was taking a turn for the better, he was quiet sure he would never be pleased with anyone that she dated. Let alone someone that she brought to an important family function like Christmas.

Dexter did not want to be at a party. She did not want to be anywhere outside of her apartment, she did not even want to be researching outside. Dexter was hurt and sad and being at a Christmas party with everyone being happy and shiny and friendly was not helping her being sad. Bess, the happy bride, happy pregnant wife, had dragged her out, put her in a dress and sat her here. Here was not where she wanted to be, at least Bess had let her pick a comfortable dress, even if she really didn't want to be wearing it and sitting here.

She could not understand how everyone was so, so, so, so, happy, even if it was Christmas. It wasn't like everyone was here, they were missing people. Lots of people, and it didn't seem fair to try and be happy when they were not here. Dexter set down the fork she had been using to nudge some of the food around on her plate, and dropped her chin to rest on her arms staring at the centerpiece of the table wondering if the hosts realized they were also hosting an infestation of voice-zapping rankets, maybe that's why she wasn't feeling up to speaking to anyone. She hardly glanced up when someone sat next to her, instead blowing her bangs out of her face - or trying to anyway, they just fell back into her face.

This party would be fun if Berkeley knew anyone who was here. Sarah had dragged him out and not even ten minutes after being here ran off to her husband, leaving him to his own devices.

He tried meeting new people but gave up on that shortly after the third person who asked what he did and then just didn't get it. He was a wizard, he flew a fighter jet in the US Air Force. Not that complicated.

When Berk noticed the girl he sat down next too, he figured he could give it one more go. She looked miserable and well he could at least try. "Fantastic Party, no?" he said sarcastically. At the very least they could have no fun at this party together.

At her table mate speaking, Dexter looked up and glanced at him before sliding back into her chair, slouching a little bit. He sounded like he was having the best time as well. At least not everyone was happy, that made Dexter feel a little better. "It's too shiny, and too happy," Dexter said with a little sulk in her voice. "The best part of this is the drinks," she said tapping the half-filled glass in front of her with her finger, "You don't have a drink, you should ask for one, they're just giving them out. I'm Dexter and my friend forced me to come here."

Daniel loved parties. Christmas wasn't really his favorite holiday, weddings of course were, but it gave him a chance to see everyone dressed up. It also gave him a chance to schmooze and get some new clients. Everyone was happy and there were definitely new couples that he could discuss the options of a high-class wedding dress. But for right now, he was okay with just meeting some new people and although his name carried it's own weight but he had been making his own way to get out there because he was excited to do his own designs.

With his empty glass, Daniel headed to the spirits table and got some wine and turned to survey the room. Feeling a presence at his elbow, Daniel gave a polite smile, "Would you like something to drink, I'm really appreciating this dessert wine, it's quite tasty."

Elphias felt just a little silly -- okay, he felt a lot silly -- as he stood there holding not one, but two plates of food, neither for himself. He would have offered to balance a third on his head, but he was certain that would get him hexed by his wife. Oh, his wife... Phoebe was so far along now in her pregnancy that he was certain a baby was going to appear at any given second. It terrified him a little. He'd read books. He knew what was supposed to happen. That didn't make it any less scary.

Elphias Doge was going to be a father! Honestly, that was just mad to even think about. So, he didn't, or at least, tried not to, which was hard to do when your wife was as...sizable as Phoebe.

"Would you like something to drink, as well?" Elphias asked before wondering where exactly he would put said drink. Maybe he'd end up balancing a plate on his head after all. Ha.

Phoebe had decided that she was never going to get pregnant again. She would have their little boy, he would be amazing and beautiful and perfect, and he would be the only spoiled child of Elphias and Phoebe Doge. This was it, they'd rushed their marriage, they'd only been married a year before she got pregnant, and that meant they could spend the rest of their lives taking it slow.

Really. There was no reason to go through nine more months of torture when you were already sure to have the perfect child.

Phoebe knew that after she finally gave birth (a scary, terrifying ordeal that she refused to think about or acknowledge----Baby Doge could stay cooped up in her belly forever, if she could avoid the pains of labor) she would probably be cooing for a sister for the baby, but right now, she was just mourning her figure and realizing she wasn't going to be able to fit in a more flattering dress for at least another few months.

"Noo, that's fine!" she let out when Elphias brought over the plates of food. Phoebe liked to deny that she could really eat all of that, but she knew by the end of the night she'd be having hunger pains again. She attempted to move over on the love seat she'd dropped down onto, trying to give Elphias some room to sit because she most certainly could not get up. "You're going have some, aren't you?"
