Her excited laughter couldn't be stopped and she clung to Ralph as hard as she could. Miranda wanted to make sure that he was real, that this was real. For the first time in literally years there was no sense of foreboding, that if they were happy they'd have to watch out for whatever bad thing was undoubtedly going to come. They could be happy without consequence, and she had been waiting since Hogwarts to live like that with Ralph.
Miranda didn't want to let go of Ralph, but her instinctively feminine nature caused her heart to skip a beat (or two---or five-) when he began to rummage through his pockets for what had to be the engagement ring. It was a ring she'd worn before, it was a ring she'd given back but now it felt like it was the first time, that it was better than the first time. This time, they were getting engaged for the right reasons, there was nothing pressuring them, there was nothing to feel---not guilty, but---
This was for them and Miranda had never felt happier in her life.
Miranda stepped back, unwilling to pull herself completely away from Ralph's grasp. She watched him intently as he fumbled, her heart began to pound faster and faster. This was it. This was the beginning of the rest of their lives. They weren't going to be boyfriend and girlfriend anymore, like they had been for the past--more than four years. They weren't going to be in a confusing, scary place because they didn't know what an engagement meant, what a baby---Miranda's eyes instantly welled up at the thought of being back to this place, at being ready to---try again.
She was ready, she was so ready to marry Ralph and be his wife, and have their kids and just--"Yes, yes, yes," she blurted, before he'd even managed to pull out the ring.
