Godric's Hollow, Halloween
WHO: Lord Voldemort, James, Lily, and Harry Potter
WHAT: Peter has betrayed the Potters, and Voldemort has broken the Fidelius Charm.
WHERE: Godric's Hollow
WHEN: Halloween Night, 1981
STATUS: In Progress
NOTES: All the Voldemort part is straight from DH, and the rest of the dialogue is from the books too.

The night wet and windy, two children dressed as pumpkins waddling across the square, and the shop windows covered in paper spiders, all the tawdry Muggle trappings of a world in which they did not believe...And he was gliding along, that sense of purpose and power and rightness in him that he always knew on these occasions...Not anger...that was for weaker souls than he...but triumph, yes...He had waited for this, he had hoped for it...

“Nice costume, mister!”

He saw the small boy’s falter as he ran near enough to see beneath the hood of the cloak, saw the fear cloud his painted face: Then the child turned and ran away...Beneath the robe he fingered the handle of his wand...One simple movement and the child would never reach his mother...bunt unnecessary, quite unnecessary...

And along a new and darker street he moved, and now his destination was in sight at last, the Fidelius Charm broke, though they did not know it yet...And he made less noise than the dead leaves slithering along the pavement as he drew level with the dark hedge, and stared over it...

They had not drawn the curtains; he saw them quite clearly in their little sitting room, the tall black-haird man in his glasses, making puffs of colored smoke erupt from his wand for the amusement of the small black-haired boy in his blue pajamas. The child was laughing and trying to catch the smoke, to grab it in his small fist..

A door opened and the mother entered, saying words he could not hear, her long dark-red hair falling over her face. Now the father scooped up the son and handed him to the mother. He threw his wand down upon the sofa and stretched, yawning...

The gate creaked a little as he pushed it open, but James Potter did not hear. His white hand pulled out the wand beneath his cloak and pointed it at the door, which burst open.

"He went down quiet for once."

Lily returned to the sitting room, and with a pleased grin circled the couch towards where James stood. Harry, while never a particularly fussy baby, was not usually the biggest fan of being told that it was time to calm down and go to sleep. Tonight, however, the one-year-and-three-month-old was calm as could be. The moment his head hit the pillow, Harry James Potter was far off in dreamland. "Must like Halloween."

Or maybe he was just in the mood of the evening. For a night that consisted of large numbers of children set free to run around the neighborhood and bang down doors to procure pounds upon pounds of sugar, everything seemed strangely peaceful. Relaxed. It all made Lily want to do nothing more with tonight than cuddle up under a blanket, read a book, and fall into bed early.

But not before she took advantage of this rare, quiet moment alone with her husband. With a newly walking baby toddling around the house and getting into everything, it was hard to find time to just be alone with James without interruption. So, slinking both arms around his neck, she raised up to demand a kiss and gently nudge him backwards towards the couch. It was a good night to be peaceful--or a good night to have fun.

Unfortunately, someone else apparently thought so too.

Lily had just fallen into James' lap on the couch when she glanced up to witness their front door smash into the wall before it. Looking akin to a deer in the headlights, heart suddenly racing a million miles a minute, she jolted up immediately and her hand groped her backside for the wand she kept in her pocket.

... and then realized she had left it upstairs. Upstairs, on top of the dresser--she could picture it in her mind, and yet it did nothing to bring it to her now, when she needed it the most. Tangible fear pumped through her veins as she turned to stare wild-eyed and terrified at James, as if asking how. They couldn't have found them here... not under the Fidelius Charm... they couldn't have found them here, unless--

"Lily, take Harry and go! It's him! Go! Run! I'll hold him off!"

James was shouting over his shoulder as he forced Lily off and away from him. He managed to catch her eye for a second, and he hoped--James felt such pain as he looked in Lily's eyes for what he knew to be the last time. He'd loved her for as long as he could remember and for a fleeting second the thought of his life with Lily brought a quick, half smile to his face before he completely sprinted down the hallway to face Voldemort. He skidded to a halt when his hand reached into his back pocket and his wand was nowhere to be found. James' mind flew back to the couch, and he looked up to stare straight into Lord Voldemort's eyes. He hated this man, this creature, he hated him more than anything, and now he was going to take everything from him. James knew he was going to die, and he started to turn as Voldemort's wand whipped up.

It was amazing how time seemed to slow in life or death (or in certain death) situations. James had experienced it a few times before, but right now it was almost as if every last breath lasted a week, a blink took a month----James' mind went to Lily and Harry, hoping that they made it out of the house, that Lily's wand was nearby----Sirius, Sirius---James wished he'd had time to tell Dumbledore about the switch, Sirius was going to take the blame for--for Peter's betrayal. They were so stupid, so stupid---how could they think for a second that Remus had---Remus would help Sirius, they were the Marauders, they'd-----

James saw the green flash of light before he heard the spell, "Avada Kedavra!!"

His thoughts flew to his father, his mother, how the Potters had lived and died in Godric's Hollow for generations. They'd be buried in the same cemetery he morbidly (ha!) mused. Lily and Harry would escape and go deep undercover, and James would have given them an extra second for their flight. He was glad for that. They could go to---Frank's, they'd head to the Longbottoms', and they'd be fine. James took the last second of his life to square his shoulders to face Voldemort's spell, and he hoped everything he'd done for the war would be for something. He hoped that his life hadn't been a waste, he hoped that Lily knew how much he'd always love her. There was a gasp as his soul rushed out of him and James' body fell to the ground of the cramped hallway like a marionette whose strings were cut...

Without thinking, Lily's wandless hands reached out instinctively to grab onto James' shirt to keep him close, but he had moved so quickly in reaction to the presence of danger that her fingertips barely grazed the fabric before it rushed away. She felt herself choke on her own despair, because she knew--she knew it like it was the only thing she knew at all--that that tiny bit of fabric was the last bit of James she would ever touch. His frantic yells, which rang through her head, were the last words she'd hear him speak. Her husband, her best friend, the love of her life, her James was rushing to his death and she was useless to do anything to stop it.

Not if she cared at all about her son, upstairs and oblivious to the way his world was changing forever just down the steps. Their beautiful, innocent baby boy who looked so much like his father, who would soon be the only thing of him left in the world--and not for long, if she didn't go now. Voldemort was after Harry... Harry was the Chosen One who had to grow up and destroy him. If he was not protected, there was no hope for anyone. And James was giving it all for that cause.

She was the only one left. She was the only one left who could make sure Harry lived tonight.

With one last tear-blurred glance at the horror taking place in the entry way, Lily forced herself to sprint, as fast as she could, up to the second story of Godric's Hollow. A heavy thump rang out just as her fingers curled around the doorknob to the nursery, and Lily closed her eyes and let out a choked scream. Shuddering legs collapsed beneath her and her weight pushed forward, opening the door into Harry's room, where the baby now stood wide-eyed and alarmed in his crib, gaze locked on his grieving mother. One hand pushed the door closed, as she half-crawled, half-stumbled pathetically across the room to where he was, whispering "Harry---Harry---come here, Harry we--we have to---"

Just as she had grabbed onto the railing of the crib to pull herself up and reached over to grab the baby boy, another set of thuds... then a quiet creak... Lily Potter's blood ran cold.

"Lily, Lily, Lily..."

Time was up. She didn't have her wand, there was no way to get out--even if she tried to Apparate now, she could not do it faster than he could send off a curse. This was it. Too impaired by grief to act in time, she had failed James, and now Harry too. Lily stared down into the identical emerald eyes below her, trying to apologize somehow for what was about to happen to them--to him.

"You know, Lily, this isn't really necessary..." The voice was so sickeningly casual it sent chills up her spine. "If you would just step aside, hand over the boy... Well, I don't see why you can't still live."

No, no, he--- "Not Harry, not Harry, please not Harry!" Lily spun around instantly, ripping her eyes away from her son's, to face this monster for what she knew was the last time. And he didn't even want her now... but he couldn't, he---she was frantic as she shook her head, as if in denial.

Voldemort's brow creased and he scoffed. "Stand aside you silly girl... stand aside now." His final words were injected with a sudden anger at her defiance--and a final warning. He would not tell her again.

"Not Harry, please no, take me, kill me instead---!" She didn't even know what she was saying anymore, she just knew that if there was any way that she could convince him that her life was worth more--there was no question, Harry would not die before her--if she could die in his place, she could think of nothing better that could come of this. "Not Harry! Please... have mercy... have mercy..."

So this was how she was choosing to go. It was almost regrettable, such a waste of life. To think, if only she had chosen differently.. he could have used her talent. Then again, if she was throwing her life away for the sake of another, maybe Lily Potter was not as intelligent as she was thought to be...

"AVADA KEDAVRA!"

Lily's vision flooded with green and somehow she knew her mouth had opened in a scream. But all she could hear as feeling drifted out of her body were the terrified sobs of a baby who in a matter of seconds had become completely and utterly alone in the world.
