This cake was something Odette was very proud of, if she said so herself. She hadn't graduated to baking a cake yet, no no, but she had researched and found a very good bakery in Manchester that would make it look like the cake had been homemade. That was a lot of effort and time right there--- more of the amount that would be needed to bake it at home! Except it hadn't been a disaster, it looked nice and it tasted good on the inside (the store owner had let her sample), so--- Noah better like it.
"It's a surprise," she spoke in a satisfied tone while placing the desert on the table. She had even gone and bought those trick candles that made little fireworks while they never went out. Completely safe, of course, no need to burn the house down. But it was the thought that counted, wasn't it? Odette hadn't done anything particularly extravagant for Noah's birthday--- at least not until later when the children were asleep.
Standing close, she sent a quick wink to Terry across the table before pushing the cake close to Noah. "You have to blow the candles out before we can eat it..."
