[Derek]
It was very inconvenient trying to meet up with a hitwizard, did you know? If she didn't know any better, Meredith would have thought that Derek had been trying to avoid their meeting--which, honestly, was just fine with her. If he kept moving it back, even after they had already moved it back, then no one could say that she hadn't tried, and eventually she could just stop rescheduling and forget about it, guilt-free. So, he had saved her life twice in one day. So what? She was trying to show him some appreciation, but if he didn't show up, then what could she really do?

Okay, so he said he was busy with work, and work was saving the lives of other people, but still. She didn't really owe him anything, did she? He had said it himself, it was his job, anyone would have done it, so.

So this was the last time she would wait for him, only to get an apology owl an hour later about how he'd gotten tied up at the Ministry. Meredith flicked her wrist around to check the time as she tapped a rhythm of impatience with a set of newly manicured nails against the tabletop of the Leaky Cauldron. Ten more minutes she'd wait for him, and then she was done trying this. Ten more minutes and he threw her conscience out the window for her.

Derek was avoiding Meredith Fielding.

It seemed ridiculous when he thought about it point-blank like that, but it was the sorry truth. How a petite blonde younger than him could frighten anyone was beyond him, but her presence set him on edge. Not necessarily in a bad way (he didn't think), but no one liked feeling uneasy.

And yet, Derek was thrown into her path time and time again, as if he subconsciously had this sick fascination with creating awkward situation out of awkward situation between the two of them. This was why he cancelled on her any previous times, though he honestly felt guilty for it. Not that he thought she cared that much about it, of course, but—well, you see what happens to him?

It was because of this that he arrived one half hour earlier than they had agreed to meet, in the hopes that he would sit, paralyzed, waiting for her to arrive. This plan backfired slightly, as he had talked himself into and out of following through with the meeting four times, and he was currently in the middle of a fifth such battle, pacing in the back of the Leaky whilst trying to avoid looking out of place. Sadly, his gargantuan presence prevented him from being as unobtrusive as he wanted to be, but no one seemed to mind too, too much.

Just when Derek was contemplating ducking out through the kitchens and standing her up (not a thought he was proud of, he promises), he caught that tell-tale flash of blonde hair and froze. Looking quite determined, not to mention perturbed, he watched her scan the room, presumably for him, a look of annoyance flash on her face, and her sitting down, to wait. Still frozen, he found himself continuing to watch her, skulking in the back of the Leaky as the sketchiest wizard to ever enter the place, including the three hags that caught his eye in the corner table. It was ridiculous. No, it was! There was no reason why this girl had to cause him any sort of discomfort at all. He was a man, wasn't he? So it was time he acted like such.

Ducking through the crowds, towards her table, he slid neatly into the seat and nodded at her, tugging at his collar with a small smile.

"Sorry I'm late," he said, tone very pleasant. "Work. I'm sure that comes as no surprise to you, though."

Meredith had been so set in the belief that Derek wasn't coming, that she actually jumped in shock when he slid coolly into the chair across from her.

Well, that wasn't nice. He couldn't just.. show up like that, could he? After bailing on her several times in a row, he couldn't just suddenly--poof!--appear in front of her, smiling and excusing himself, could he?

Merlin's beard, she really hadn't wanted him to come, had she? She felt her ears heat up a little at the realization, and how rude it was of her to actually wish that he would turn out to be rude and ditch her for good so she wouldn't have to keep trying. This wasn't like her, really it wasn't. Meredith wasn't a mean-spirited, devious-thinking person--well, she was a Hufflepuff, for God's sake! But then again, if she thought about it, she had always seemed to have an odd relationship (if you could call it that) with Derek Dobbs, one that made her think and act rather differently than she ever had with--well, anyone, truthfully.

Because, actually, what had he done to deserve her constant criticism? Apart from the little annoying things, of course, and that whole embarrassing affair on the beach, but overall, Meredith couldn't remember that he'd done anything before like... kill kittens in front of her, or hex her parents. And yet she wanted to scrutinize his every move, and even the very thought of him, to this day, riled her up. Even as she regained her poise from the surprise of seeing him, by default she had a slightly annoyed image to her person with which to regard him.

"It's about time you decided to show up. I was about to leave."
