Alice had a huge, gigantic, headache.

When they'd received James' patronus, Alice had happened to be looking out of the window of Neville's nursery (Neville, Neville, this Nigel thing needed to stop right now). Her eyes had locked onto the dark clouds, and she thought, 'Oh, how peculiar.'

Because honestly, when did a bright and sunny day turn into one terrorized by a tornado? Frank came loudly bursting into the room a moment later and Neville was swept up before they quickly apparated to the Order house. Alice wasn't sure if Frank had even said anything, but she'd known, and they landed in the Order house. She was glad to see that they weren't the first; Molly Weasley and her brood were in the living room. Alice nodded at her, rolling up her sleeves and motioning for Frank to give Neville to Molly (who had automatically rushed over to take the baby from her husband).

"Ready?" she asked, flipping out her wand. Merlin, it had been a long time since she'd seen any action.

What the fuck, it was a fucking friday! Even death eaters enjoyed the spoils of fridays. He would know, Jugson would just never shut up on fridays about how it was, in fact, friday. So at least Frank would have assumed they would take the common courtesy to leave alone the holiest day of the week.

Obviously not.

Just as Alice was motioning him to hand Neville over to Molly, Frank was preparing to hand his son back over to his wife. "No," he sounded firm, shaking his head slightly. "You're staying here--- with Neville." It wasn't a completely ridiculous notion. Their son was barely a week old, Alice couldn't leave him here while she went out and faced who the hell knew what was going on in the center of London. If something happened to her.... no, it would be much smarter to send him out, and have Alice stay here for one more time. If the worst was to happen.

Frank had never held Alice back once when she was pregnant from whatever Auror duties she had wanted to do, he had made sure of that (unless it was completely ridiculous). Because he knew, when it came to situations like this, it would be important to actually speak up. So--- no, he was making an executive decision, Alice had to stay here, and he would go. It just wasn't--- she would understand that, wouldn't she?

"Please," Frank added in a slightly edgy tone, inching his arms out slightly toward Alice. Bringing the baby closer to her would definitely help, no matter how much Frank desired to have all three of them stay here.

Alice naturally reached for her son, but she stared, flabbergasted at Frank. No? No? How many times had she hidden a smirk away from Lily when James had kept her from frays? Alice understood, but never had she thought that she would be forbidden from helping the Order. Neville immediately started to squirm from his slumber and Alice looked down at the baby. This wasn't fair.

She was just as trained as Frank, why should he be the one to risk his life for all of them? Alice had accepted a long time ago that Frank could die at any moment on the job, that she could to, but how could she live with herself if she sat back and let him take all the risks? They'd been a team, and now, suddenly, this bundle in her arms had---

Alice knew she had to learn how to separate being an auror and a mother, but it was---all these different feelings still soaring through her were not helping the matter, and she bristled, clutching Neville tightly to her. Fine. Fine. She would stay, but she couldn't handle letting Frank go out alone, not---oy, Alice cursed the healers for telling her about the influx of emotion she would have the few weeks after giving birth, she was sure she would have been fine if she hadn't known that.

"Fine," she said curtly, but softly, barely managing to keep her lips from quivering. Alice leaned toward Frank, her face a centimeter from his. Neville was pressed in between them, and Alice had never felt such a feeling before, "But if you don't come back, I'm going to be very mad at you."

Had he just--- had that please just worked? Frank only allowed himself a few openly baffled seconds in front of Alice, genuinely surprised that she had given into his wishes so easily. Obviously, they had never been Lily and James when it came to things like this but... he had been expecting more of a fight from her. It had been months since she'd gone on the field, it was only natural for her to want to go back now that she wasn't carrying around a baby... but if anything happened to her! At this point, Frank was extremely aware that Neville would need her much more than he needed him, making it all more important for Alice to stay where she was.

It was morbid, and he tried not to focus on the fact, but it was the truth. As much as he loved Neville, it was obvious that their previous lifestyle would have to change drastically to keep the family, well--- alive.

"Thank you," Frank stated in a much muter tone, glancing briefly at Neville before looking to Alice. He felt the deepest feeling as they drew close to just screw everything and stay there with them, but--- he couldn't. People needed help and--- he couldn't, it wouldn't be right, but-- oh, what he wouldn't give to suddenly stay here.

"I'm coming back," he responded after letting a slight frown break through on his face. Before he left, Frank gently patted Neville on the top of the head, and leaned into Alice for a brief kiss. Wand ready, he stepped away from them to join whatever chaos had broken lose at Diagon, despite how he felt anything but a focused Auror.
