DIAGON ALLEY, EARTHQUAKE
"And you know what? There is not a sale worth going out in this heat, I'm serious!"

Javier grinned, putting up his hands in a defensive manner, "I'm sorry, but I don't need a pair of robes that badly, have you seen those temperatures? I'm surprised Fortescue's is still standing, would've thought they'd have melted awaaaaaay----whoa, what is---"

He gripped onto the desk, eyes widening as he rumbled and rolled away because the fucking building was shaking! Javier let out numerous words that were not politically correct to say on the wireless, and toppled out of his chair, busting his head on the floor. Strings of angry Spanish soared out of his mouth as he crawled up to his knees, and Javier grabbed the microphone.

Through the glass he saw that the other members of his staff were looking like they'd just been shot, and it took Javier a few good seconds to realize what the fuck happened, as another rumbling, rolling coursed through the studio. Javier dropped to the ground, covering his head with his hand as he shouted angrily into the microphone:

"ARE WE EXPERIENCING A FUCKING EARTHQUAKE IN DIAGON ALLEY?"

Berk went up when everyone else went down. It was his nature, auror training or not. He'd already been lost on the conversation Amelia and Marnie were having, not because he didn't find it interesting (though, now that he thought about it, he couldn't remember what it was, so it was probably a girl thing? Maybe?), but because his eyes had been watching his glass of water with great intensity. None of them were touching the tables, it was a quiet cafe, so the vibrations through the liquid like he was skipping tiny stones across its surface, were very, very confusing to him.

So he went up, when they went down. It sometimes amazed him at how his head clicked on and off into auror mode, but the surprise only lasted half a second, because that's how aurors survived. Berk's arm shot out tensely as he shouted a rapid fire of spells that would slow down the fall of the roof, levitate some pieces into the air, and straighten up things that had fallen. "Erecto!" he shouted, holding his wand out for the spell as he forced the wall back into place. He gritted his teeth, taking a few steps forward to help the spell, and let out a grunt went it finally went back up. Berk panted, dropping down to the ground the moment before Amelia grabbed onto his arm.

Shit. Berk pulled out of her grip and put his wand to her arm, muttering off some healing spells before he looked at Marnie, "Are you all right?" he asked over the noise, not stopping with his quick wand work on Amelia. He had to get them out of there, out of Diagon Alley. Who knew if there would be aftershocks, or even worse, the reactions of the people in the street.

If only Amelia had grabbed her other hand - it was currently beneath a small pile of rubble and she winced the moment that she tried to move it, frowning to herself. She couldn't remember now what they'd been talking about and it certainly didn't matter. Right now she was focused on staying close to Amelia and not freaking out too badly. Unfortunately, she wasn't very good at the latter part. Marnie felt her breathing come in harsh bursts and spots danced in front of her eyes for a moment.

Remember the baby, Marnie. She put her injured hand instinctively against her stomach and let out a soft sigh - Merlin, this was stressful.

"Yeah," she said a little too loudly even over the noise of the rubble, "You?" He looked all right, at least.

Amelia wouldn't have noticed Berk healing her arm if he hadn't pulled away from her to do it. Why was he pulling away at a time like this? For a moment she reached out for him again like a child reaching for their mother, until she felt a cool sensation wash the pain away and realized that there were far more important things right now than being reassured that he was there. Like figuring out how in the world they were going to get out of there as quickly as possible. More importantly, how they were going to get the very pregnant Marnie out of there.

The awning that had fallen on top of the table had made something of a tent-like structure for them to sit under for the time being and come up with a plan. At least until an aftershock came along and sent more things coming down and burying them alive.

Merlin, it was hot. Was it just her, or was it really warm in that tiny space?

"Berk, help me levitate this thing," she said loudly, inclining her head towards the overhang covering them. "I think we can handle it together, at least long enough to get out." Or at least long enough for Marnie to get out. That thing had come down pretty heavily, who knew how much it weighed?

Berkeley nodded, puffing his cheeks as he and Amelia sent the spells toward the overhang. The rest of the restaurant was basically cleared out, but from the shouting in the streets, he knew that Diagon Alley and whatever else was affected by the quake was not going to be as easy to fix. And then there were the aftershocks. They shouldn't be running around like maniacs; being in a crowded street like Diagon was the last thing you wanted when you were nearly certain that the earth was going to start shaking again.

Within a few minutes they were freed, and Berk began to assess the situation. He knew that he had to go back to the Ministry, or at least trying to keep the alley as organized and safe as possible. Amelia and Marnie, on the other hand, needed to get out of there as quickly as possible. Berk frowned at the sight of Marnie's hand, and he ducked to put a quick spell on it, reassuring her that she, and the baby, were going to be fine. Mycroft would kill him if they weren't.

Berk straightened and took a breath before he began unbuttoning his robes. "I want you and Marnie to get as close to the Leaky Cauldron's apparation point as possible and get out of her---she should be okay with a side-along. Get to Hogwarts, there's no way Mungo's is not a madhouse right now."

He pulled the robes off his shoulders, glad he'd worn his jogging shorts underneath them today; he was still trying to beat Booth in a race around the training course. Almost there. Berkeley handed Amelia the robes, moving to help Marnie stand up, "Put it over your shoulders, there's some protecting spells that'll help."

Amelia opened her mouth to ask the question that was flashing a warning in her brain, but closed it quickly. She knew what Berk was going to do while they were escaping--he was an Auror, after all, and since this chaos had begun he hadn't stopped acting like one. He was all business right now, like they were another couple of civilians on the street. And they were, but---

Fuck that. She had a right to be worried about him and show it, she was his wife.

"So what are you going to do, huh?" Amelia challenged, stepping forward and tossing the robes towards Marnie. "Aftershocks are going to come, and you're not going to be able to do anything but get yourself hurt if you stick around here." She didn't know why she was suddenly so desperate to stop him; the worry had never gotten her to try to get him to not do his job before. Amelia couldn't quite understand why suddenly the anxiety was so overwhelming, but she knew that she needed to get him to come with her.

Reaching out with the hand that had just discarded his robes, she wrapped her fingers around his wand hand and squeezed insistently. "Stop acting gallant and come with us, at least until it's less likely that the earth will start shifting beneath you again."

"If I don't go now and get people out, it's going to be even more devastating when the aftershocks hit," Berk responded immediately. He felt a strange kind of cold in his chest, realizing he had never had to deal with his wife in this situation. Most days on the field you went out, and pushed forth through everything, blocking out any emotion that might stop you from reaching your goal. People had this idea that aurors were as cold as stone because of how serious they behaved, but if they let themselves think about the wives and children they had back home when they were fighting death eaters?

Well--they didn't get back home.

Berkeley had always been very good at turning on his tunnel vision, but looking at Amelia now made it difficult to fully lose himself in that. He had to take a breath and step out of his auror mode before he was going to be able to get her out of there and do his job.

Smiling, Berk put his hands on Amelia's shoulders, then quickly moving them to cup her face in a way he often did when she got too stressed out about work or legal issues. Berk pushed forward and kissed her quickly, and still holding her face he said, "I love you, Amelia, but I have to go," his entire face frowned into an almost pleading state, "You've got to trust me."

Trust him for what, exactly, he wasn't sure, but Berk felt his mind and body settling back into his defensive mode as he held onto her face. She needed to know, without him saying more or staying much longer, that he was going to do all he could to save as many people as he could, and come back home. But if he couldn't---Amelia had to know he tried.

There was a tiny amount of warmth that permeated the cold feeling in her chest when Berkeley smiled. When Amelia felt his lips, her eyes closed instinctively, expecting something longer than the tiny, quick kiss that he gave.

The second she opened her eyes and saw his face, opposite of the expression he'd given before, it was like swallowing ice.

She couldn't explain it, this--terrified feeling she had of letting him go. She trusted him, but it wasn't Berk that she needed to be able to trust. It was all of the unknown that was out there, all of the danger that no one could predict, including him. It wasn't like he was going to fight Death Eaters. An earthquake wasn't a human being, who you could to some point or another predict what it was going to do, who had weaknesses that you could exploit. He wasn't trained to know how to deal with this, and they both knew it.

But he had to go.

"Go," Amelia told him. Her voice didn't shake because she wasn't going to let it. If she was going to let him walk away like this, she had to force some kind of certainty into herself, even if she had to trick herself into thinking for five seconds that it was all okay. For five seconds, she needed to tell herself that what she felt was stupid and suck it up. She had a job to do other than being his wife, just like he had a job other than to stand here with her and console her. She still had to help Marnie get out before it was too late. What would she do if she knew that Marnie had gotten hurt because she'd stood around being a baby for a minute too long?

Amelia brought her hands up over his and squeezed them tightly before moving them away from her face. "I love you. Go."

Everything would be fine.
