Slug Club Party! Open to Everyone
Rebecca smiled tightly as Professor Slughorn finally left her grasp, and she wiped at her eyes. Oh, this was terrible! Professor Slughorn had been her absolute favorite, and as a head of house, you couldn't ask for more! Rebecca had constantly gone to him for career advice, life advice, and just to talk, and yes--he was a bit stuck in his ways, but it wasn't a bad thing to want to make good connections. He knew how to truly be a Slytherin, and she was sad that he was leaving his post.

She should be happy that he was leaving the same year she finished her education at Hogwarts, but knowing that the Potions Master was not going to be in the dungeons come September constantly reminded Rebecca that she would not be in the school after June. It was a terrifying thought, being a Hogwarts graduate. Rebecca was sure she was ready for her internship, but for the rest of the real world? She wasn't so sure.

There had been whisperings at the last family dinner, about proper suitors and all that..

She sighed greatly and lingered by the drinks, her eyes casting over the various punch bowls. Everyone looked lovely, and she would normally be in a twitter about the celebrities that roamed the Great Hall, but at the moment she could only be melancholy.

Bess felt a bit like a fraud, being here. She'd received the invitation because she'd been a valued member of the Slug Club during school, having always been told she would amount to great things. So when she opened the invitation and realized she had nothing to be proud of, she nearly threw it into the rubbish bin. It would be easy to ignore! All she'd done was waitress, and now secretarial duty for a tiny office in the Ministry. That wasn't impressive, that wasn't Slughorn worthy.

She shouldn't even care what the old man thought, but a fault of hers had always been--well, she was a bit vain, even Bess couldn't deny that, and she had somehow managed to convince herself that she would somehow come off as successful to the crowd at the party.

This was a terrible idea!

Bess nervously gulped down her drink, eyes watching the party over the rim of the glass. Why oh why had she been so stupid? She'd managed to avoid conversation so far, but that could only last so long. How long before someone realized she was a phony with lackluster achievements?

Augh. At least she looked pretty.

Drystan tried to remember the last time he'd had an enjoyable time at a party. "Never" seemed to be as close to a correct approximation as he could come. But, he theorized, Professor Slughorn deserved a proper send-off, and it was partially thanks to the retiring man that Drystan was where he was today. Ever the polite wizard, he thought it best to pay his respects to the unique force of personality that Horace Slughorn was.

Coolly under-dressed with his dragon-hide jacket still on, he surveyed the room to see what the turn-out was like. But the man did know people from all over the span of the United Kingdom--and Drystan would bet his best broom a few outside of it, too. Many famous names aside from himself were present, as well as a few others less notable than their front-page counterparts. Including one blonde with whom Drystan was getting to become intimately familiar with. Intimately familiar in every other sense of the word, of course.

Drystan had never meant to steal that flat away from her--his sister could easily find somewhere else to live. But he was so curious about this enigmatic blonde, that he found himself half-heartedly engaging in a bidding war, just to find out more about her. Seeing her with Sadie had only cinched the deal, and he'd made another trip on his own to find out what her financial situation was. Unscrupulous, perhaps, but curiosity was a powerful motivator in cases such as these. Not that Miss Zeller knew any of that, of course. To her, he was probably just the Quidditch-playing jerk that went around knocking up women and denying it and stealing nice homes away from deserving single mothers.

But did that stop him from approaching her at the party with a gentle tap on the shoulder and whispered "hallo"?

No, it really did not.

Oh, for fuck's sake, did it look like she wanted to talk to anyone? It was bad enough she had to borrow one of her sister's old dresses and adjust it because she had more of a figure than Veronica (well it was true), but now she had to deal with someone who would most likely notice the alterations and---ha.

"Hello," she said primly, straightening out at the sight of Drystan. Ha, ha! He mustered up some dignity to go and speak to her after she'd managed to swipe away the absolute most perfect flat in the world? She had to give him credit; she would not have been able to look the victor in the eye after such a bidding war (in which she was quite sure her good looks played a key role). Bess rarely won things these days, so she'd been very loud about the victory to her friends and family.

Well---not Fabian, really, because the fact was that she was refusing to live with him again until the war calmed down (if they were even together by then). They were in a precarious position right now, but he'd been the best (and worst) thing to happen to her in a long time, so Bess wasn't going to easily give him up.

She sipped her drink with a slight, smug shrug of her shoulders, "How are you, Mister Fawcett?"

His eyes cast downwards, the corners of his lip tugged upwards in what he hoped she perceived as a polite loser's accommodating smile. Really, thought, it was just because seeing her that smug felt oddly like a victory for him. Inclining his head slightly, Drystan clasped his hands behind his back.

"I'm doing well, Miss Zeller. And yourself?" Drystan resisted asking how she was enjoying life in her new place of residence. In fact, he should probably seem slightly sour about the whole deal. He had, after all, appeared to lose a substantial amount. "I had no idea you were a member of the Slug Club back in the day."

Indeed, he said to himself as his eyes wandered the room once more, he had no idea any of these people had once been members of the private club.

Bess tried to keep her blush down, but she nodded comfortably enough and took a drink. Yes, the Slug Club. She remembered the first time Slughorn had approached her about coming to one of their teas, and how she'd declined in order to run a N.E.W.T.s level charms workshop in her sixth year. Of course that had made him pester her again, and Bess had sighed and accepted.

She'd always known how to make people work for her attention.

But what about right now? Bess knew that Drystan was a quidditch player, a good one at that, and he was here for obvious reasons. And she knew that he knew that she was just a secretary in the ministry. If he wanted, he could completely point that out to knock the smugness right out of her. Bess suddenly regretted the smirk she'd sent him not moments ago and silently prayed that Slughorn stayed far, far away from Drystan Fawcett and herself.

"I am doing quite well," she said, adjusted the strap of her dress slightly. Bess' eyes darted away for a moment to try and find the Professor, but thankfully he was caught up in a conversation with one of the Hobgoblins---oh, wow. Bess' lips twitched into a smile for a moment and then she turned back to Drystan, where her smile dropped immediately.

"Ah, yes---it seems like so long ago, really." Her eyebrows rose, "And were you? When you were in school?"

"For a while," Drystan flashed her a brief smile, but didn't expand further on the subject. He didn't often share anything about himself, if he could help it, barring people he was close to, such as Odette. But his public self was quite reserved—stand-offish, even. He was always polite, always inclined to continue a conversation, but there was very little warmth about him. Drystan's relationship with Miss Zeller was peculiar—he certainly knew intimate details about her that he would not ordinarily know if, say, he had met her here. And there was no question that she was quite aware of some of his own peculiar situations. What category, then, did Bess Zeller fall into? Benefactee was hardly the term, not even Drystan felt that applied (considering she wasn't even aware that she was such), but there was a certain amount of—cautious tension between the two, in his opinion. Or perhaps that was because he found her utterly fascinating, and that was positively unheard of.

He thought far too much. So much so, perhaps, that he was considering indulging in Professor Slughorn's oak-aged mead.

"You look very beautiful tonight," he said, nodding his head towards her golden garb slightly. His thoughts turned ruefully amused as he compared the casual purple robe he was sporting to the dress ones of those around him. He should probably stop being petty about dress codes and adhere to them every once in a while, he thought.

Bess felt flattered immediately, but didn't show it as she finished her drink. She timed the last bit perfectly with the course of a passing waiter, and put the glass on his tray in one fluid motion, "You're not the first to say that tonight."

Except he was, but she couldn't let him know that. Bess may have literally been out of practice with social interactions and events, but she knew how to work them and play them like the expert she always had been. She had managed to get him to compliment her without looking as if she wanted to be complimented, and she let it slide off her shoulders as if it didn't mean a thing. Which of course it did; even though she did have her own quidditch hunk to attach herself too, she and Fabian rarely made it out to anything like this because of his family or the Order. Not that she would rather he place parties and socializing over those two things, it was just merely a fact.

And sometimes it was just nice.

Her coy smile stayed on her lips, and Bess noticed for the first time that Drystan did not have some hapless groupie clinging to his arm. Surely he had a girlfriend, or at least a flavor of the week?

"Are you here alone? That seems slightly ridiculous, if I want to be honest." Bess' brows furrowed; it wasn't as if she were one to say anything, she had decided to leave Sadie with her brother, and Fabian unaware of her location.

Sebastian!

Mackenzie, in a rare show of emotion, fiddled with her hands nervously in her seat. How could she not? For some reason beyond her, she had let Sebastian convince her that coming to Slughorn's goodbye party would be a good idea. That it would be fun to see old professors and classmates, not to mention the countless end of famous people that would be attending.

Except her problem with that was all of her friends from school were either dead, in prison, barely speaking to her, or not speaking to her at all, and she had no desire to see any famous people tonight. Sebastian had no idea about the issues with her friends she had been having, or at least she was trying her best to hide those facts from him (she hadn't spoken a word about any of it). So no, as much as she desired to scream and assert how fearsome she could be to them, tonight was not the night to start.

And that was just the tip of the iceberg! The simple thought alone that she had left her baby--- not that Sebastian's brother wasn't capable of taking care of his nephew for a night, but--- well. Their situation was different. She was allowed to feel paranoid, with everything that had happened. It was completely normal: she would know, she had just spend the last year working as a pediatrics Healer.

A forced smile appeared on Mackenzie's lips as Sebastian returned, and as much as she wanted to, she couldn't stop her leg from it's quick bouncing. It had been going strong for the past twenty minutes, and obviously didn't feel the need to stop as her husband sat down.

She would wait a bit longer to avoid talking with Slughorn. As much as Mackenzie had enjoyed him as her head, and a mentor, she didn't think she was quiet ready for him yet.

There were a few reasons why Sebastian had insisted on accepting the invitation. One, yes, they did have a newborn, and as hard as it was to leave Anthony with his Dod Eric, they needed a night for themselves. It was just necessary! And it didn't help that Mackenzie was back at work, and with Sebastian's easy hours he was home more often. He was getting a bit of cabin fever, that was for sure.

He also had the constant reminder of the Order on his mind, and he hoped to put it away for a night. Sebastian hadn't dared uttered a word of it to Mackenzie, and he felt guilty about it. But he couldn't! He didn't know if he actually wanted to help, and if he did, she still spoke to, and was close to people that he himself thought to be quite untrustworthy. Who knew what kind of information the Order had on some of the people Mackenzie associated with.

"Cheer up, Loftus," Sebastian said with a grin, dropping down beside Mackenzie with their drinks. "We're supposed to be celebrating."

She tried another pitiful attempt at a believable smile, but Mackenzie didn't dare to think it accomplished anything she hoped. Unfortunately, ninety percent of the time Sebastian could see right through her--- so she hoped that tonight would be apart of his off ten percent.

"I am," she nodded as she reached for her cup. Never had the concept of liquor strengthening her current state ever been so appealing. Mackenzie raised her cup up in the air toward Slughorn's general area, and as she had seen her friends do many times, slung back over half her drink in one swing.

What? That was acceptable. She had just been pregnant for nine months, and that's what people did at parties, didn't they? Plus she was apart of the older crowd here so--- fear of growing old could be responsible as well.

She honestly was doing the worst job at appearing calm, wasn't she?

"Yuh huh."

Sebastian smirked greatly at his wife; who was she trying to fool? They were certainly able to keep secrets from each other (or at least they were sympathetic enough not to pester the other), but this was just blatantly obvious on Mackenzie's part. Sebastian didn't know if it was only the fact that Anthony wasn't within their sight, he was feeling the slight twitch of separation too, but he knew that Mackenzie would've admitted she missed their son if it was only that.

He leaned back and took a drink, eyes wandering over the party. He himself had never been part of the Slug Club, though he'd never felt any jealousy about it. Sebastian didn't need an invitation to an exclusive club to be recognized for his skills (and look at that, he'd gotten one from the Order of the Phoenix, which many here could not say). He wondered briefly how many people actually did find Professor Slughorn as a comrade and friend, and he supposed that the chances of that were rather good; people rarely did nice things these days, if they didn't think they'd get something from it. Being on friendly terms with Slughorn could definitely open up doors.

But, Sebastian didn't need any doors opened at the moment. He sat up, slapping his thighs in a motion full of finality. They were not going to spend another event sitting around awkwardly. The Jugson wedding had been enough, and they needed practice for the Dorny's.

"C'mon, I know something that'll make you feel better," he said, standing, taking Mackenzie's wrist in a sweeping motion. Sebastian intended to push through the crowd and out the door into the corridors of Hogwarts; it had been a ridiculously long time since he'd wandered around the school.

She was miserable at this. Honestly, for a Slytherin, Mackenzie had found she could rarely been cunning and deceptive when she wanted to be; only a certain times did she seem able to deceive anyone, and even then it would come and go. She supposed she could blame the lack of practice on that fact, but. It wasn't exactly that she strived to be a good liar, in the past or now.

Well, now a silver tongue would have been much appreciated.

Mackenzie let out a quiet sigh, distracted slightly for a moment as she eased her own thoughts. So, it came as a surprise to her when Sebastian stood up quickly and swept her out of her chair as well. "I don't---" she started as he headed toward the center of the room, where most people were standing. Talking to people really wasn't on her list of things to do that very moment. While she usually did enjoy it, yes, but not right now. This was a bit too much for her.

But much to her surprise, Sebastian pushed past the people, heading in a direct line toward the door. Once she finally caught on to what he was intending to do, a small smile appeared on Mackenzie's face, and she moved closer to him as they walked. Yes, of course he knew that walking around their old school would make her feel better: she had always felt most at home here, a place where she could just be herself.

"Are we going to do our old rounds?" she asked in a quiet tone once they were finally alone. Mackenzie shook her wrist out of Sebastian's grasp only to latch her arm around his.

Honestly, Odette just came to this thing to wear the most indecent dress she could find in her closet. And that was hard to accomplish these days, since her stylist had recently deemed it appropriate to make Odette look more like--- well, not an adulterous home wrecker. Which Odette more than willingly obliged to keep up, but sometimes you just wanted to wear a hot dress when it came to large gathers like this. Fortunately, she had been able to find one dress that had slipped her stylist's eye, so here she was, wearing it to her liking.

Of course, she had already spoken with Slughorn, for a surprisingly long time at that. Actually, Odette was still trying to figure out how he had managed to get her to promise to send next season tickets to him as soon as she could. That man had such a way with words that would always confuse her... in school, she had loved the whole concept of the slug club, only because she had been apart of it, of course. Though now, six years later, here it was still going strong? Not into it so much. But--- once a member, always a member. Which meant as much as she didn't want to, she really did have to show up to his last hurrah.

Sipping her drink, Odette suddenly became very interested in students present. Which made her feel extremely old, because holy shit, did they look young. There was something wrong with that. She was still young! Right? Yes, since when was twenty three old?

Seth really didn't know why he showed up to this stupid party, except for the fact that there was free drinks and free food, which often tempted him out of his house. That and Savannah had seemed very excited when he asked if she had wanted to go. Somewhere in the night Seth had lost his wife in the crowd, leaving him alone to mingle and be assaulted by the quidditch fans in the crowd, most of them still in school. School was such a long time ago and it felt weird to be back. He sighed looking around the room. His eyes narrowed when they landed on his teammate. He downed his drink before going to look for another and Savannah. After there last conversation, he really didn't feel like dealing with her and her new behavior. She hadn't noticed him yet but he definitely noticed her... and her dress, that could definitely double as a shirt. And since when did she have legs like that. Seth shook the thought out of his head before attempting to slink away before noticed. Had she no decency? Really, there were school children here. She was probably trying to get back at him. We he wasn't going to let it work.

Odette had gotten use to the feeling of being watched by people a long time ago, so it was by chance that she glanced over to see Seth Wadcock staring a bit away from her. Well that was... strange. Maybe she still had time--- no, nope, they had just made eye contact, it was impossible to ignore him now. Odette felt an internal groan fill through her as the deep desire to suddenly leave filled her to her inner core. But, she couldn't, because she had to keep up this... ridiculous routine that was apparently the only way to keep him away from her, and leave her alone. But of course, how appropriate it was that she had to make him think that she liked him to get him to finally leave her alone.

It was sick, and wrong (technically he was married), but the last two weeks had been her most peaceful without him bothering her through gossip or any other way so... the prices she paid for peace was steep. Luckily Drystan and Noah were still on probation with her and therefore she was still not talking to either of them, so she wouldn't have to worry about either of them getting the wrong idea about this.

Well. She handed her empty drink to a passing waiter, only to swipe another full one as she walked. It was unfortunate that there would be no level of drunkenness that would make this easy for her. But support through liquor did help greatly.

"Hello Seth," Odette said once she finally reached him, an light smile on her face despite how forced it truly was. Saying his first name felt so wrong.

Seth cringed slightly when Odette came up behind him, but was quick to hide it. Since when did she seek him out? It was fun when a mere hello to her got under her skin and made her bristle. Ever since he arrived to Montrose, she had an aversion to him. He didn't do anything but become her captain, so yea he took advantage of the fact that he could piss her off. It was amusing.

Its not like he didn't want to be not friendly with her but she just made it so easy. And he did try to be nice at first, but quickly gave up when it wasn't working. Now she had this complete mental mood swing and Seth had no idea what to think of it. Other than she was up to something.

"MacFarlan." He said barely acknowledging her, and definitely not looking her way.

Well then. If he wasn't even going to look at her, then she at least could more downing her entire drink in one gulp without breaking the show. Odette pulled her lips back for a second, running her tongue between them inside her mouth.

Maybe enough damage had been done. Maybe it was possible that everything previous had been enough to get him to stop bothering her once and for all, maybe--- no, who was she kidding? For all she knew, he could be playing the exact same act she was, but simply from a different angle, which meant he wanted her to stop so then the process of them would start all over again, but worse!

She could not let that happen.

Odette again placed her empty drink on a passing waiter's plate. Flipping her hair behind her shoulder, she took a deep breath and moved to stand in front of him, forcing him to look at her. The least he could do was look at her. She was putting in too much effort into this whole thing for him to just--- ignore her. No one ignored her.

"How are you?" she asked intently, placing a hand on her hip. Good thing she had decided to wear the most inappropriate dress she owned tonight: that would help her to her advantage.

Seriously. This whole situation was just to weird for Seth. Yes there was some phrase along the lines of 'don't give it out if you can't take it' or some shit, but he really couldn't give a fuck. What did he want from him really? She had been begging him to leave her alone for months and finally he was, partly due to her weird mood swing and a little more to due with the fact that Savannah was looking into the press a little to much, and now here she was forcing herself into his sight line and making small talk.

He looked down at her only to be captivated yet again by the fact that she was wearing hardly anything. Face. Look at her face. He quickly reminded himself. You have a wife, and her cleavage is much nicer. Not to mention MacFarlan is a complete bitch on her normal days.

"Faring pretty well, I suppose. Not much to do in the off-season, so here I am at an old teacher's retirement party." Seth took another long sip of his drink, congratulating himself at keeping his answer short and mundane. "Although the teenage girls ogling me is quite tiring. I'm thinking I might bail once I find Savannah."

He wasn't going to make this easy, was he? Not that she expected him to, but it would have been welcomed.

She supposed that since he was barely talking to her, that meant he was trying to resist her, which meant that this whole absurd matter was working. Odette couldn't help but smile at that--- and at how uncomfortable he was acting. Where was the childish Wadcock Odette had gotten to know so well over the last year, hm? Preparing to take a permanent vacation? Well how terrible that was to hear. The thought alone that she would forever overpower him completely willed her to continue.

"Imagine how hard it is when grown men openly ogle at you," Odette responded in a coy manner, her head turning to the side innocently as she spoke. Of course she noticed his little slip--- but that wasn't her fault.

For a second, she felt a twinge of guilt at what she was doing--- no doubt his wife would be enjoying any of this, but-- don't handle what you can't dish out! She had more than once warned, implied, demanded, and screamed for him to leave her alone, so--- this was really all his fault, and he had no one to blame but himself.

"I would love to meet her, by the way," Odette stated, taking her hand off her hip as she spoke. "Savannah." Just to clarify. She wondered how long it would take him to simply sprint away. Odette would embrace that.

"Oh and here I thought you were welcoming it, seeing as you forgot the rest of your outfit at home" He let out scathingly. Really, just what was she trying to do. Nothing ever made her happy, did it? He finished off his drink and put it down rather roughly on a passing waiter's tray earning him a pointed glare.

Messing with him was one thing, but having her bring Savannah into things really pissed him off. Seth never openly flirted with Odette, well only after those rumors starting, but that was in more of a 'this is so fucking ridiculous' teasing sort of thing that worked to piss her off even more than usual.

But now everything was just getting out of hand.

"As lovely as that idea is, I don't think it will be happening anytime soon. I wouldn't want to subject my wife to the same torment I'm force into."

Odette couldn't stop herself; her jaw dropped in shock at Seth's bitting comment. Since when--- why did he care how she dressed? And who was he to even say anything about it at all? Granted-- not--- but--- that wasn't fair! Odette stood stock still in front of him, her thoughts going back to how she had decided a few weeks ago that he was secretly in love with her.

Maybe this wasn't such a good idea. While treating her teammate this way had been working to her advantage for the past few weeks, she didn't want him to--- do anything stupid. Or get the wrong idea. She really didn't want him thinking about her at all, aside from ways of how to stay away from her.

With an uncomfortable feeling beginning to settle in her stomach, she suddenly realized that she should have brought Noah tonight.

Eventually, Odette managed to clip her jaw shut tightly, but words were still beyond her. Drystan had to be here by now, and never had she felt the deepest urge to suddenly go and hide behind the huge person that he was more than now.

But-- this wasn't fair! He was allowed to say whatever he wanted to her without any problem, but the second that she throws it back at her, it completely blows up in her face because--- ohh, she hated him. Hated him.

"----" Her arms moved in front of her body as she attempted to speak. Words, words, she really needed words at this point.

"How nice of you to care," Odette finally deadpanned. She really should have brought Noah.

"Oh I really don't, actually" Seth said matter-of-factually. In the span of the past fifteen minutes he had grown extremely tired of all the games they were playing. Maybe from now on he'd just ignore her, except in practice and in games, when it was completely necessary to talk to her. "I'm just annoyed you had the nerve to complain about it."

He looked down at her again, his face fixed with a frown. It was almost hard to not smirk at the fact that he had gotten under her skin within mere seconds of trying. It was far to easy. It was getting boring. He was definitely going to find something else to amuse himself with.

"Anyways, I do believe I see my wife, so I must be off. Have a good summer, I don't expect I shall be seeing you until practice starts up again."

And that was why she hated Seth Wadcock.

Odette felt a deep rage replace all emotions she had previously been feeling, though surprisingly, she was able to keep a calm demeanor while she stood in front of him. Well wasn't he just the nicest bastard she had ever met. A scowl appeared on her face, and Odette had no problem showing her distaste for him entirely now. Screw--- whatever plan she had before, it was back to square one with them as far as she was concerned.

As he shifted to move away, she reached out to stop him, her hand latching onto his shoulder. She would leave first, thank you very much, since he was so inclined to fuck with her in any way possible.

"Please, let me," Odette hissed, her nails digging into him as she spoke. She severely doubted he would keep to his word (as if he even had legitimacy), but that certainly wasn't stopping her from continuing to stay away from him as much as possible. With a little bit of force, she pushed him away from her as she walked away, purposely not looking at him as she walked away.
