Mary
Unfortunately for Gabriel, he missed the visiting hours by a minute. Even with his rather loud tones and frustrated gestures, he wasn't allowed to see Mary until the following day, which was why he found himself standing at the nurses' desk, a minute before the visiting hours were to begin. He didn't hide his disdain toward the woman as she watched him with amusement, and the second the clock struck the appropriate time he was down the corridor, making sure to send a glare over his shoulder at the nurse he was sure whispering about him.

He didn't know what to think as he nearly sprinted toward Mary's room. Gabriel had been so angry at her the night before, ready to tear into her for hanging around with such foolish people like Sirius Black. Of course he would be the proprietor of a pub that would be attacked, of course he would. He was the disowned son of one of the most ancient pureblood families; if there weren't death eaters furious with Sirius Black, Gabriel would proclaim himself a proud Gryffindor. But that wasn't the issue now, really. He had no say in who she spent her time with, and he had absolutely no right to tell her what was best for her and her life.

Though, Gabriel was quick to recall that he had very much say in the security of their child, and the balance of the two feelings helped him keep calm. He liked to find both sides of any situation he was in, it created a level playing field to start off on.

This was it--Gabriel knocked softly before pushing the door open and peering over at Mary. He smiled softly and pulled the small bouquet of flowers from behind his back to offer to her, "How are you feeling?"

Gabriel's eyes widened in confusion, watching Mary shift and make odd sounds and curse and, "Are you okay!" he blurted, putting his hands out. She looked so strange right now, but it could be that his mind was making him think the worse, that she shouldn't---make noises after telling him that the baby was acting strangely and this was utterly ridiculous!

He stood back shoulders straight and completely unsure what was going on anymore. She didn't look nearly as hysterical as she had a few moments ago, which Gabriel could only take as a good thing. He hated this. He hated not knowing everything that was going on with their child, he hated--he hated that he hadn't been able to protect them, and it was just---beyond frustrating and irritating and---

"I'm calling the healer," he said sharply, turning toward the door. No, Gabriel was not going to just stand around and watch anymore.

"Gabriel Lawrence Corner, if you--you are not calling the healer," she said in a calm yet firm tone of voice. "Our son decided to shift his weight onto my bladder and I am trying to manage enough strength to make it to the loo. So rather than going and--just--come over here and help me, please?" she said, her voice now pleading as she worked on swinging her legs over the side of the bed.

She let out a soft sigh as she pushed herself up off of the bed. The affects of the attack the previous day were felt as she did so, a twinge of pain slowly trickling from her lower back down her legs. "Sorry, I should have said that it wasn't--but he kicked me and then right afterward he decided to--oh for the love of Merlin, I know child! Stop--augh!" The baby was pressing even more into her bladder and--she was about to burst, it was the most unpleasant feeling in the world, Mary was quite positive of that. "You are lucky that you're not the one with a baby in your--every bloody night, Gabriel, like clockwork. It's like he thinks my internal organs are pillows or something."

Gabriel really didn't take kindly to being scolded, or told---what to do. He was good at following directions, that was more than obvious, but when he was simply reading symptoms and situations and--fine. Just--fine. Gabriel helped Mary up and off the bed so that she could get to the loo, keeping his mouth in a pencil thin line as he crossed the room to wait for her to be done.

He almost wanted to tell her that no, he wasn't lucky that she was the one carrying the child. Not that Gabriel had any desire to be in Mary's literal position, but no matter where she went, what she did, the baby was with her. And him? No, he joined her for healer appointments, he made it when they needed to figure out things for the nursery (because he refused to let Sirius Black near anything his son was going to be sleeping in).

Every time he thought about the baby, it opened up the millions of worries he had. His sister hadn't spoken to him since that Hogsmeade weekend, his parents hadn't contacted him since before his birthday in January, and it was simply becoming...life, it was becoming his every day life, not speaking to his family and just going to work.

Going home, going to work. Sometimes a baby meeting. Going home again.

Gabriel sat on the window sill, arms crossed as Mary finished in the loo. It didn't seem like a good time to discuss details, but he was not feeling like ignoring things for the good of the situation. Crossing the room again to help Mary back to the bed, he began to wonder aloud,

"I think this--whole ordeal, I think this means we should discuss custody issues, Mary. I know you've had a rough few days, but it just proves that we need to know how we're going to raise our son and--the poor boy also needs a name," Gabriel rambled the last bit almost shyly, ducking his eyes away for a moment, "I want to make sure that you know and that--he knows when I'll be there for him. I always will be but---I mean. You...know."

Custody...oh Merlin, she could already feel tears welling up at the thought of losing her son and--no that was not what he was suggesting! Perhaps it would be easier to discuss names for their son first. Having a name to blame all of her aches and pains on and a name to dote on and just--it would be exciting, finally having something to call the active baby in her womb by.

She was worried about how all of this would pan out. It seemed like she was so alone in the pregnancy. If she had a craving late at night, she had to find a way of filling it. If she needed to get a quick answer from a healer, it meant her going and figuring it out. She had friends who were more than willing to be chatty and friendly and just generally there for her, but at the end of the day her only companion was one that liked to kick at her and couldn't even talk back if she truly wanted to. But of course, she pushed through all of it. Being able to feel the baby kicking at her after a long day at work had a strong tendency to make things better.

"I'm not going to--Gabriel, I couldn't keep you from him that would be--and, I mean, after everything--I would be a horrible person to even think about keeping him away from you." If anything, the baby probably needed to stay away from her. She was, after all, the one getting caught in the cross fire with her dangerous friends and creating a very life threatening situation for herself and for their son. She let out a soft sigh as she sat gingerly back down on the bed. "But...names first? Did you have anything in particular in mind or are we just winging this?" They had discussed the matter previously, but nothing had resulted of it thus far. Maybe today would be the day.
